Paul Hindemith was a tremendous all-around musician. His special instrument was the viola, which he played like a virtuoso. His chamber music recordings--of his own and others' music--all deserve to be revived. The String Quartet was only six years old when this recording was made, the String Trio only one. The immediacy of these performances gives you an idea of how challenging this music was when it was new. Hindemith's 78s of Mathis der Maler are famous; the recording is surprisingly vivid for 1934. The 1927 String Quartet recording is a bit scratchy, but nothing serious; the others are nearly noise-free. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-05-03

The Amar quartet's performance of Hindemith's spectacular Op. 22 quartet is unbeatable as an agressive and fine-tuned performance. IF you can get a copy of this version I think it's the version you'd prefer. The sound quality of the ca 1927 recording is terrible compared to, say, the recordings Blind Willie Johnson did in the States at the same time, but if you're a Hindemith fan you'll overlook this. This CD has a great performance of the Mathis symphony though recording limitations mean you don't hear the brass or woodwinds as prominently. The Trio isn't as endearing to me as the other two works but it's got great engineering.

P.S. if you can get this along with B000006L7H (Composers in Person) 2-disc set of Hindemith performing or conducting his own works you'll have virtually every Hindemith-helmed performance that's out on CD. Vinyl is another matter.
