Mozart Rarities From Los Angeles.......2005-04-20
This is what happens here on this recording made by conductor Lucinda Carver and the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra of three of the composer's somewhat lesser-known symphonies, namely nos. 34, 29, and 17. The 34th, written in 1780, can be seen as a prelude to the final masterpieces in the symphonic form that Mozart was to compose soon after; its fanfare-like use of trumpets and timpani, for example, presages his 36th and 41st symphonies, both of which are in this symphony's key of C Major.
The 29th, composed in 1774, is a light, slightly Haydnesque work in the now-standard four-movement Viennese symphonic form and in the key of A Major, with strings, woodwinds, and horns blending in very elegantly. The earlies of the three works here, No. 17, composed in 1772, is in G Major and reflects the influence of the three-part operatic sinfonia, which begat the symphonic genre as pioneered by both Mozart and Haydn.
All three works receive very spirited performances by maestra Carver and the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, giving their namesake something to be proud of. This is a Mozart orchestral recording well worth seeking out, even if you already have these recordings done by far better-known ensembles.
