5 out of 5 stars Heavenly........2003-09-20

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

5 out of 5 stars A must have album!.......2001-09-17

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

5 out of 5 stars Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

5 out of 5 stars Some Fine Tartini.......2007-06-26

Giuseppi Tartini was born and worked in nothern Italy for a long period ending with his death in 1770. He was a virtuoso violinist and composer for his instrument, highly regarded in his time but almost forgotten until recent times. Before this revival almost the only Tartini one heard was "The Devil's Trill", one of his very many violin sonatas. He wrote some 135 violin concertos, L'Arte Del L'Arco have undertaken the mammoth task of recording all of them on period instruments.
This CD from Ariadne Daskalakis with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra is a modern instrument performance, I usually prefer a period instrument one, but that has not inhibited my enjoyment of this recording.
Two of the concertos here are recorded for the first time, but that is no surprise when there are 135 of them and only about fifty have been recorded. Tartini's violin concertos seemingly always follow the pattern of the outer movements being lively allegros with the second slow movement being lyrical, solemn, perhaps melancholy, and usualy aria like, often almost for solo violin.
I have to admit I had never heard Ms Daskalakis before now, but I find her a very accomplished performer ; the Cologne Chamber Orchestra has been Naxos's "house orchestra" for 18th century music for years, and they have many fine CDs to their credit. Together they perform with a certain grace and professionalism, the outer movements dance along nicely framing beautiful slow movements.
A year or so back Archiv released a wonderful CD with the title "Concerto Veneziano" with Giuliano Carmignola and Venice Baroque playing two late concertos by Vivaldi, and one each by Locatelli and Tartini, the Tartini was D96, the second concerto on the CD we are discussing here. Carmignola's is easily the best Tartini I have heard, Daskalakis is not too far behind.
If Carmignola is a five star performance, then this one should get less, 4.5, but one is not allowed half stars, 4 would be mean, so 5 it is.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Baroque Pieces.......2007-05-24

I had never heard of the composer Tartini before buying the cd. Tartini wrote violin concertos that are baroque in style. The music is low-key mellow stuff that is great background music for an office or a party. Tartini's style seems to be very different from the more up-tempo Vivaldi. The playing on the cd is excellent - particularly the violin soloists. This is a great cd for the price.

5 out of 5 stars a tartini revival ?.......2007-02-20

There seems to be a Tartini revival going on, without the notice of most of the critics. My interest was raised by the concerto included in Carmignola's "Concerto Veneziano". Since this CD was released there has been a series of 10 from L'Arte dell'Arco.
The first thing you notice with Tartini is that he doesn't sound much like Vivaldi even though he comes from northern Italy and was a regular visitor to Venice when Vivaldi was at his most famous.
The Tartini sound is intense and elegant, with emphasis on cantabile melody, rather than drama. There are hints of the coming classic period ? One of the slow movements on this CD sounds very much like Locatelli, or more likely Locatelli sounds like Tartini?
This interpretation from Elizabeth Wallfisch with the Raglan Baroque directed by Nicholas Kraemer at the keyboard is a splendid one; the keyboard is a chamber organ rather than harpsichord, whether this is Tartini's choice or Kraemer's we are not told. The addition of a Theorbo adds to the continuo.
I am happy to give this CD 5 and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Stupendous Schneiderhan.......2005-04-14

The most recent batch of DG's "Original Masters" box sets boasts several titles that will leave classical collectors rejoicing, "Wolfgang Schneiderhan: The 1950s Concerto Recordings" foremost among them. This 5CD set features the then Deutsche Grammophon "house fiddler" in brilliant performances of Vivaldi, Tartini, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Martin Violin Concertos. In some of my previous reviews of box sets in the OM series, I have been critical of what the powers that be at UNI have done in terms of their selection of material, but here they got it almost perfect. Instead of duplicating a title in DG's "Originals" series that couples Schneiderhan's stereo recordings of the Beethoven VC and Mozart No. 5, they reissue his earlier, and better, mono accounts here. By contrast, they reissue the violinist's stereo performance of Mozart's 4th Concerto (1960 with Schmidt-Isserstedt) on this set because his 1956 mono account had already been included in the Hans Rosbaud title in this series. (Thankfully, the duplication lesson seemingly has been learned after they put the very same Dvorak Cello Concerto recording on both the Josef Krips and Zara Nelsova OM boxes!) Also of note here are a magical Mendelssohn VC with Fricsay, brilliant Bach 1041-1043s and an invigorating Four Seasons, the set's only other stereo selection along with the Mozart VC4. This set alas has one minor problem in my opinion. Because DG and Decca are now all part of Universal, Schneiderhan's performance of the Martin Concerto with Ansermet, originally made for Decca and currently available on a "Double Decca" title devoted to the composer, is included here. It is unnecessary duplication for me but others may not care. Personally I would have nixed the Bach Partita included on CD2 (hello, the title is "Concerto Recordings") and the Martin to make this a tidier four disc set. But even as is, "Wolfgang Schneiderhan: The 1950s Concerto Recordings" is one of the true gems in the "Original Masters" series.

5 out of 5 stars The works of a master. Beyond the Superlative.......2003-05-11

Actually, there are two masters at work here: Giuseppe Tartini, the composer, and Giovanni Guglielmo, the director and principal violinist of the amazing L'Arte Dell'Arco, a Baroque group playing on original instruments. Volume 10 marks the recording of exactly 60 of Tartini's output of 135 violin concertos (there are eight concertos on this 2-CD set). All of the concertos in Volume 10, as is also the case with the previous nine volumes, are world premiere recordings of music by this Baroque master and contemporary of Corelli, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Torelli, Domenico and Alessandro Scarlatti, Benedetto and Alessandro Marcello, Geminiani, Locatelli, Veracini and Bonporti. Needless to say, these are essential recordings for any aficionado of Italian Baroque music -- and of all Baroque music for that matter. I eagerly anticipate each new volume in this amazing cycle, and immediately purchase each installation without hesitation. This project by Giovanni Guglielmo and L'Arte Dell'Arco (to record all of Tartini's 135 violin concertos) is one of the most significant musical ambitions of this century. I can only hope that Armonico Tributo Austria's goal (under the direction of Lorenz Duftschmid) to record the complete works of the great Austrian master Johann Joseph Fux (on the Arcana label) achieves the same stride and support; sadly, the Fux project seems to be stalled after the issue of Volume 1. Having written 135 concertos, the Tartini project could possibly span as many as 20 volumes. Nevertheless, the issuance of every volume promises new world premiere performances of musical gems that have been hidden away in libraries for centuries. To date, Giovanni Guglielmo and L'Arte Dell'Arco's quintessential performances make this cycle imperative listening both for performers and lovers of Italian Baroque music. Simply put, do not miss this historical event. Beyond superlative! In a word, stellar!
