Simply astounding.......2006-11-06
The grace and elegance with which these endearing sonatas are played is simply astounding. Both Manze and Egarr ought to be given knighthoods for this CD. It just has no peers. I find this supremely enjoyable CD to be an absolutely essential part of any serious baroque music fan's collection. The liner notes provide great background information of each of the sonatas, even those of less than certain authenticity, with a meticulousness that could concieveably allow for acceptable academic referencing, which is saying something!
With a careful attention to detail, the performers have given us a brilliant interpretation (I am willing to say the BEST I have ever heard, as obsequious as that may sound), of these works, in what must be considered a benchmark of high standards. Five out of five, for the purchase of the decade.

Focus on the Recordings.......2007-07-23
The price is killer and you HAVE to buy it, but be warned: these are not the best recordings, you get what you pay for.
First of all, I'm not a Vivaldi expert, but I've heard his compositions throughout my life in so many different places and recordings and have a vague idea of how some have to be played. Secondly, I'm not a classical music connoisseur, but I love it and have over 300 discs of various composers and styles. Third, I know what a good audio recording should sound like and this will influence my critique of some discs in the collection. Finally, it's easy to get lost among all the tracks contained, so in some cases I will give you my favorite tracks in a disc.
I'm sorry, but I've only reached disc 20 of the box-set, as I listen to more this review will be expanded.
DISC 1:
Why would you use an AAD recording as a first impression for a 40 disc box-set and for the "Four Seasons", which is probably Vivaldi's best know work. The concertos are played enthusiastically, but lack any additional virtuosity to put it ahead of other much better recordings out there.
DISC 2:
Same as DISC 1, played and recorded by the same people.
DISC 3:
The pieces in this disc are VERY well played, nonetheless, you can hear heavy breathing from the soloist which can be a bit annoying.
DISC 4:
Very well performed as well, heavy breathing is less present.
DISC 5:
A very good recording, excellent execution by the hapsichord and good by the recorder.
Tracks 4, 6, 7 and the whole "La Notte" are extraordinary.
DISC 6:
Exquisitely recorded and performed by the Budapest Strings.
DISC 7:
Marvelous performance on the whole disc.
Tracks 22 & 24 are non-plus-ultra.
DISC 8:
Great performance too.
Suggested tracks: 7, 12, 15, 24
DISC 9:
To have an original baroque organ playing is a plus.
Solo strings are lacking in quality (for example: tracks 6 & 7).
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 8, 15
DISC 10:
Despite being and ADD recording, the quality is fairly good. The cello is very well played.
Suggested tracks: 3, 4, 12
Excellent track: 13
DISC 11:
Same musical group and soloist as DISC 10. The contrabass is extremely distorted sometimes, and if you take into consideration that this is an ADD recording, it can get pretty bad. Some background noise is perceived.
Suggested tracks: 3, 6, 9
DISC 12:
The compositions are somewhat boring, either way the performance is plain decent.
Suggested tracks: 10, 12
DISC 13:
Good performance and sound quality.
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 6, 7
Excellent track: 12
DISC 14:
Good performance and sound quality too.
Suggested tracks: 10, 14, 16
Excellent track: 5
DISC 15:
Badly mixed, the basoon is blocking the whole ensamble by being in the foreground.
The playing precision is lacking.
An AWEFUL thing about this recording is that you can hear the basson key-sticking with the instrument and the saliva. It's horrible.
Such a pity, the sound of the basson with other instruments can be pretty interesting.
DISC 16:
Violins sound a bit off tempo.
Suggested tracks: 4, 8
DISC 17:
Good sound quality and performance.
Suggested tracks: 1, 7, 9
DISC 18:
Despite being an old recording, it is a very welcome one.
The performance is very well above par. Tempo is fantastic.
The quality of the recording could have been better due to some string plucking that is heard and which can become bothersome.
These are some of Vivaldi's best know tunes.
Suggested tracks: 4, 6, 13
Excellent tracks: 1, 3
DISC 19:
Lively recording.
Track 6 is the same piece found in another disc in the collection, but with a better performance.
DISC 20:
By now you've heard all of this pieces before in the other discs. Nothing new here, nor better.
This is a fantastic deal!.......2007-02-25
With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. They are very much the foundation for modern western culture and music. His talent is woven through what we are
The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance
This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!
If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me
So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion
Excellent, Broad Selection.......2007-01-25
But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.
Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.
$70....when was this???.......2006-11-25
$70/40... you do the math........2006-04-07

Veracini, one of the most outstanding violinists of his time and a prolific, versatile composer, is best known for his violin sonatas. The four recorded here come from different collections; obviously written by - and for - a virtuoso, they vary greatly in style and form. Opus 1 No. 1 is somber and dramatic, but three of its five movements are graceful dances; in the final Gigue, the violin imitates a "Posthorn." Opus 2, written 20 years later and entitled "Sonate accademiche," is more subtle and complex. No. 6 begins with a Siciliana, followed by a "Capriccio," a form Veracini favored: free, charming, surprisingly dissonant and chromatic. The minor-mode slow movement, flanked by two light, fast ones, is mournful and intensely expressive. The remaining two Sonatas are more contrapuntal. No. 1 from Veracini's last collection, "Dissertazioni" on Corelli's Sonatas Opus 5, develops Corelli's multiple-voice counterpoint and retains his "Moto perpetuo" finale. The playing is splendid. Holloway tosses off the fast passages, stratospheric flights, double and triple stops with effortless virtuosity; his articulation is crisp, his rhythm supple. Using low tuning and sparing vibrato, he produces a beautiful, warm tone, which he can change instantly to fit mood and character. His embellishments are brilliant and imaginative; his crescendos and decrescendos usually follow the ascending and descending lines, and he rather overdoes the echo effects. Jaap ter Linden makes his prominent cello parts authoritative yet supportive. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Surprise gift .......2007-07-23
When I tried this CD, I don't know how to explain my feeling, it's very soft, smooth and beautiful. Sounds cheerfully to my heart, full of happiness.
Holloway, as other viewers described, I also had tried some, ex biber, schmelzer, they are all perfect, of course I should add Verachi in my satifying pool.
If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it (with apologies for the terrible pun :).......2007-06-07
The four sonatas on the disc are beautifully written and performed, and the clarity of the recording is top-notch. Holloway seems to channel the spirit of composer-violinist Veracini (think of Yo-Yo Ma performing Boccherini) in his mastery of extemporaneous melodic ornamentation (trills, turns, and mordents -- oh my!), which was usually not notated explicity in Baroque manuscripts but rather simply expected of a capable performer. Holloway is certainly that!
These aren't sonatas in the Classical (and later) sense of the term. Using later definitions, these might have been called trios. But the sonata form in the Baroque period was different. In the Vivaldian form, there were four movements, while in the form popularized by Corelli, there were five -- as opposed to the more common three-movement form in the Classical and Romantic periods. There are representatives of both Baroque forms here, one of which is an explicit homage to Corelli's Opus 5.
Those familiar with the later form of the sonata might also be surprised to see a harpsichord *and* cello here, but the two operate together as a continuo in most of the movements, which is typical of the period. There are occasions, however, where the cello and harpsichord get to "stretch their legs", so to speak, breaking out of the continuo model, as in the lovely opening movement of the Sonata No. 5 in C Major (track 6). Listen for the wonderful tinkling arpeggiation in the hapsichord part, making it sound more like a harp, while the cello part is beautifully spare, harmonically reinforcing the central violin solo.
Veracini also has the ability to surprise. In the liner notes, Holloway calls him "an innovative composer [with] an eccentric personality", and that comes through at many points. For example, in the downward chromatic progression in the Aria movement of the Sonata No. 1 in G Minor (track 2). But while he diverges from traditional harmonic and contrapuntal forms at times, Veracini also delivers passages that are wonderfully illustrative of Baroque character, as in the second movement of the Sonata No. 1 in D Major (track 11), which has the feel of a Bach canon. Think of the final Allegro of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, taken down in tempo, and you'll have a good sense of it. There are also remarkably lovely slower movements, as in the Largo of the Sonata No. 6 in A Major (track 18), which calls to mind echoes of Vivaldi and Albinoni.
So, if you like the Baroque -- and in particular, Vivaldi, Corelli, Scarlatti, and to a lesser extent Bach -- do yourself a favor and order a copy of the Veracini Sonatas.
PURITY + PRECISION = PURE BAROQUE MAGIC.......2006-04-25
This is the fourth recording on ECM by John Holloway and colleagues. The first three are:
Schmelzer -- Unarum Fidium (ASIN B00002R0ZJ)
Biber -- Unam Ceylum (ASIN B00006I61G)
Biber -- Der Turken Anmarsch (ASIN B0000XK7LE)
These three discs are among the finest of all Baroque chamber music recordings that I've heard. To my taste, the two Biber CDs eclipse Andrew Manze's earlier effort and flirt with the status of desert-island discs.
Holloway's tone is phenomenally pure and precise. His colleagues are with him every step of the way. The playing brings to mind that of the finest string quartets -- that is how closely the players listen to each other and respond and integrate their parts.
Everything about these ECM discs is a delight: the music itself, the performances, the engineering (demonstration-worthy), and even such trivial niceties as the artwork and booklet.
This Veracini CD was released in March 2005, but I wasn't familiar with Veracini and so didn't purchase the disc. It wasn't until this CD was selected as a Gramophone Editor's Choice in April 2006 (I guess there's not a statute of limitations for that distinction) that I took the plunge.
My only regret is that I waited so long. Holloway & Co. have produced a truly outstanding disc. What surprised me so much is how outright tuneful Veracini's music is. In every movement, the violin dances and sings and traces some remarkably beautiful melodic lines. Jaap ter Linden on cello and Lars Ulriks Mortenson on harpsichord could not be more sympathetic or responsive partners. If this team had an ensemble name, that name would rank right at the apex of Baroque chamber groups, along with Florilegium, The Rare Fruits Council (Manfredo Kraemer), and Romanesca (Andrew Manze).
I would not consider this music as "specialist-only" repertoire. Veracini's music is so instantly attractive that it should appeal to any Baroque enthusiast.
The first piece on this CD, Op. 1/1, was recently recorded by Biondi and Europa Galante as the first piece on a CD of Italian violin sonatas (ASIN B00008XRSR). Don't get me wrong, I am an enthusiastic fan of Biondi and his group, but in this piece Holloway & Co. play circles around the Italians. Don't believe me? Listen to the sounds clips and decide for yourself!
I only hope that Hollway and his colleagues go on to record many more chamber-music discs as fine as this. Don't change the recipe, just give us more please!
(A fifth CD by these performers is available only through Amazon.co.uk -- ASIN B00005UC9Z. It's called "A London Concert" and includes works by Handel, Geminiani, Veracini, and others. It's on the audiophile Naim label.)

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
In his liner notes, Andrew Manze writes that this collection, which includes two single movements--one slow, one fast--represents all of Handel's violin sonatas, but that no one is really sure how many of them he actually wrote. No matter; they all contain wonderful music and have been loved by players and listeners since they were written. Six are well known. Two are unfamiliar, and the second of these, in G major, is quite unlike all the others: two brilliant fast movements separated by a brief, highly dramatic slow recitative. The rest are cast in the customary four-movement form, but they still have extraordinary diversity; no two of them sound alike.Manze's program is arranged for utmost contrast, and his playing underlines the differences. He is a fabulous violinist with an effortless virtuoso technique and extraordinary bow control. He has at his disposal an incredible variety of articulation, dynamics, and nuance, which he uses to change mood, character, and expression with utmost subtlety and minimal means. He vibrates sparingly but to great tonal and emotional effect; his expressiveness ranges from driving vigor, exuberance, and headlong impetuosity to mournfulness, dramatic intensity, songful lyricism, and serenity. His rhythm is buoyant and flexible and he hesitates on certain significant upbeats in a way that is mischievous but not mannered; his tempi, fast and slow, are judicious and controlled. Both he and his pianist ornament lavishly and imaginatively in a wonderfully spontaneous, improvisatory fashion, especially in slow movements and repeats, often bursting into brilliant runs. This is "authentic" playing in every sense: faithful to the composer, the style, and the performers' passionate feeling for the music. --Edith Eisler

SCHOLARS NOT PEDANTS.......2005-04-28
The players' style is all-the-way authentic. Full details of the 18th century instruments, plus a fascinating picture of the violin-maker's workshop, are provided on pages 12-13 of the booklet, and Manze goes into the question of the proper constitution of the continuo or accompaniment. I found that I adapted to the sound of the violin within seconds. There's a fair amount of action-noise from the harpsichord, but authentic is authentic, so I adapted to that too. The playing seems to me beyond criticism, full of verve in the fast movements and soul in the slow, and the recorded sound is of the highest modern standard. The works themselves are beautiful and fascinating. I wonder in particular whether Handel wrote the first movement of the F major sonata, and if not who did. It is not only an exceptional piece but decades ahead of its time, as Manze rightly says.
The production is fairly de luxe, containing not only an expensively printed booklet but also a full colour catalogue of Harmonia Mundi's current offerings. The set has won critical acclaim, which I endorse wholeheartedly, and it can be recommended without qualification to all Handelians and indeed to the music-loving public generally.

pure, beautiful tone!.......2004-06-30
(just listen to the first four notes of the F Major!)
It takes my breath away. What a great example of what the violin CAN sound like. His ornamental/improvisational ideas are great to listen to - he certainly isn't just regurgitating the same old Handel sonatas! A refreshingly different take on the sonatas. (I for one am not interested in hearing the same old interpretation one more time!). This is unique and amazing. I'd like to hear more classical artists add their own personal touch in the way that Andrew Manze can.
A good disc, if not great.......2003-10-27

Classical guitar wonder David Russell follows up his strong disc featuring the music of Mauro Giuliani with this fresh set of Baroque transcriptions. Thanks to Russell's impeccable technique and lyrical playing, you might even forget that these are transcriptions at all. Russell's interpretation of Jean Baptiste Loeillet's Suite No. 1 in G minor is impressive for its depth--these six dances range from jaunty (Corente) to graceful (Sarabanda), but the guitarist never falters. On Vivaldi's cello sonata, Russell grippingly conveys the composer's dark, meditative side during the Largo movements. But performing nine of Scarlatti's numerous harpsichord sonatas, Russell really gets to shine; these pieces seem tailor-made for the guitarist's agile fingers and understated style. Russell isn't the flashiest classical guitarist you'll hear, but his thoughtful and solid performances on this disc speak for themselves. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
