Album Description
The sound of New York's Gogol Bordello is a combination of reckless fervor, foot-stomping rhythms, outlandish lyrics and a circus of surreal stimuli that leaves progressive minded music fans spinning in the their wake. Drawing upon Gypsy, Slavic and punk-rock traditions, Gogol Bordello is the genesis of a new aesthetic that bridges the gap between Eastern European and Gypsy influence with Western culture. This new direction in music is singer/lyricist/visionary Eugene Hutz's passion, who uses the term "Ukrainian Gypsy Punk Cabaret" to describe their singular sound. "The title of the new album sums of the spirit of the band and the people around it. Gogol Bordello is about creating new musical possibilities. We all come from a very distinct tradition of music that is largely driven by Eastern European sounds, visions and colors as well as punk rock and street culture. We're a multicultural unit with an underdog energy and a sense of humor, although a pretty twisted one," says Hutz.Customer Reviews:
Versus Irony.......2006-06-15
But like many bands who find success, Gogol Bordello actually have had a number of solid gypsy-punk albums before this. And "Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony" is right up there among their best -- sprightly, energetic and raw. It's completely insane and quite entertaining.
It starts off with a stop-start accordion melody that bobs in and out, until it's joined by a grinding guitar and frontman Eugene Hutz. "I walked into the bar/a man came up to me and said/you know the older you will get/the more PERVERTED you will get!" he sings in his heavy accent. Sounds like he's relishing every moment of this.
It sets the tone for the entire album -- gypsy music with a punk flair (or vice versa). "Ocurrence on the Border [Hopping on a Pogo-Gypsy Stick]" is a whirlwind of fast electric guitar and accordion, while "Let's Get Radical" is a grimy, slow-burning rock song, light on the gypsy and heavy on the punk.
But quite a few songs are heavy on the traditional elements: "Through the Roof 'n' Underground" is a slower number with a catchy tune, and "Hats Off to Kolpakoff" sounds like a rogue fiddler playing a little ditty on the streets. And the exhilarating "Baro Faro" is probably the best on this album: a nine minute stretch of wild fiddling and clashing rock rhythms.
You definitely have to admit that Gogol Bordello doesn't sound like any other rock band. They don't even sound like other Eastern-European-influenced bands like Balkan Beat Box or Beirut. They sound, in short, like your basic Balkan folk band that was forcibly conquered by a hyperactive clown punk.
So don't be surprised by what you hear -- a colourful clash of rock and folk, with electric guitar and smashing percussion duking it out with fiddles and accordion. It's that way from beginning to end (except for a few interludes of folkier music). The actual melodies are often traditional-sounding, but played with jagged punk fervour and twisted edges.
Eugene Hutz has a way of letting rip at machine-gun speed, or drawling the songs out at length. It's a bit hard to tell what he's singing though; his accent is as thick as a marble floor. But if you can decipher the lyrics, you'll find that they are A) funny, B) weird, C) profane and D) insane. Don't bother finding out the words -- just listen to that raw, howling voice.
If you can remember the difficult title ("Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony"), then check out one of Gogol Bordello's most cohesive, solid albums. Worth checking out for anyone who loves colourful, flavourful punk.

Album Description
The latest in total-explode intensity from New Jersey's blazing Dillinger Escape Plan. Four brand new tracks (2002) of metallic, new-school hardcore spew rocked with rage, intelligence, & guest vocals from Mike Patton of Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, & Faith Now More. Epitaph.Customer Reviews:
the peak of Dillingers carrer (so far)..........2007-03-02
There should have been a full length album instead of an EP at this point of Dillingers career. Dillinger Escape Plan is one of the few bands that totally match Mike Patton's eccentric style and bizzare insanity, (besides Mr. Bungle).. but nonetheless, this fleeting moment of brilliance is an amazing piece of pure insanity. Mike Patton solves the only problem that I have had with past DEP releases, and that is the repetitive and often annoying vocals. Mike Patton's voice does many things on this, but one thing he doesn't do is get repetitive. The music itself is even a different kind of machine than that of 'Calculating Infinity'. You can hear bits of electronica scattered here and there and that is no doubt Mike Patton in the workings.
Overall this is an unhinged bit of brutality for any fan of heavy music, and an inspiration for the future success of 'Miss Machine'.. Do not pass this up.
PAPER...SCISSORS...ROCK...We will rock you!!!.......2007-02-08
I am one of those Mike Patton fans - Faith No More is still one of my favorite bands and 'Angel Dust' is still one of my favorite albums after all these years. The mixture of Dillinger Escape Plan's mental offbeat version of metal and Patton's insane vocal experimentations is brilliantly executed. If you were a FNM and Bungle fan this should in no way disappoint.
All four songs on this EP are great but 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things' for me is the gem of the album - combined with the chaotic sounds of DEP Patton moves from yelling "I'm the best you'll ever have" (which lyrically and vocally reminds me of the FNM song "The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies") into deep chanting, high-pitched screaming and yelling, softer enchanting harmonious whispers, deeper fluctuating Patton speaking/rapping, and the signature offbeat rap-singing Patton technique ("Mouth To Mouth"). DEP's performance is on par with Patton's vocals and the fusion of such talent results in this being probably the best EP you will ever hear. If they had made an LP it may have rivaled 'Angel Dust' as one of the most unique and experimental albums of all time.
RECOMMENDATION: Besides the obvious of purchasing more music by Patton and DEP -if you were blown away by the short brilliance of this EP then check out Saosin's EP 'Translating The Name'. Anthony Green is another very talented vocalist (not like Patton however - Green has his own unique high-pitched sound) who delivers an amazing performance alongside fast guitar shredding and pounding double bass drums - 15 minutes of bliss.
Four tracks of unleashed fury with Mike Patton leading the way!.......2007-01-08
Call it crazy, mathcore, or just plain intense music, the album starts off with the speeding monster called "Hollywood Squares". Mike's poetic, dark type vocal efforts that his fans are familiar with are greatly heard with pleasure on the masterful song "Pig Latin". Track 3 is called "When Good dogs do bad things" and is a rollicking, rocking tempo of a song that has all the guitar crunch and smashing drums one could ask for. The four track album rounds out with "Come To Daddy" and features some great lead guitar work at the beginning that quickly leads into an intense, off the wall banter of Patton singing "I---want your--soul". This song is one of my favorites as it evokes a lot of mood through the guitar parts as well as some eerie synth. The final twenty seconds of the song has a final crash of drums before spookily fading out with some mysterious tones.
It's almost sad to think that by the time we got this album, the band was already heading off into the sunset with Greg Puciato. I have nothing against him, or the singer they had before this "Patton project" (Dimitri Minakakis) but I kind of wonder what might have been if the collaboration between DEP and Mike Patton had surged forward for continual studio efforts.
It doesn't get any more brutal and nuts than this........2006-06-29
I cannot rave any higher about this CD. It rules. If you don't have it, you should. If you do, you know.
And you thought System Of A Down was cutting edge.......2006-04-17
If listening to this doesn?t destroy the room your in, I will personally come and mess it up for ya.
Imitated by System Of A Down and Dog Fashion Disco, amongst
others, its little surprise assaults like this
Irony Is A Dead Scene or Sepultura?s Procura O Cara
or his all-out screaming heart attack on Mit Gas that show Mike Patton is just that extra notch up in relentless energy, reach and creativity.

Oh Lordy!.......2006-05-02
Heartfelt sincerity! So great........2006-04-12
Flash forward 6 months to early 2006, when my bud Adam at Fearless Records mentions the new album was going to be produced by Matt Squire (who produced one of my favorite albums of 2005, The Receiving End Of Sirens' "Between The Heart And The Synapse"). My ears are perking up more and more; and when I finally received my copy of "Antidote For Irony" in the mail, I resented myself for ignoring this band in the first place.
With the impending loss of a loved one very close to the members of So They Say, "Antidote For Irony" was written to expose their inner-display. These days, words like "heartfelt" and "sincere" are tossed around like dust in the wind, but in this case it means so much more. Lyrics on this record like "I'll know all I need to know to bury you" ("In Essence, We Are Falling") or "I don't think you're ready to go" ("The Burden") only encapsulate some of the feelings the band feels to put on stage here.
And how's the music? Sure, it's nothing truly unheard of before: poppy, hooky choruses and blasting guitars powerfully soar, sounding sensational thanks to another splendid production effort by Squire. But something about this disc is beyond infectious: maybe it's the sheer honesty, but despite the bitter taste the lyrics leave in your mouth, this album won't do anything but make you feel good. How's that for ironic?
If you're into aggressive, catchy, and super-infectious pop-punk with a slew of energy, So They Say's debut LP just might do it for you. As a newfound fan of the band, I can say that maybe it's the fact I wasn't expecting much that made this such an exciting, wonderful experience.
So They Say rising stars........2006-03-13

Tracy Nelson is the voice of experience, and quite a voice it is: her rich, throaty delivery rings the rafters without apparent effort, whether she's belting the gospel-flavored "You Will Find Me There" or growling the bitterly resigned Mose Allison tune "How Much Truth." Nelson's good in a way that's never ostentatious; she's capable of letting these songs speak for themselves, interpreting them in often surprising ways. This unassuming quality only contributes to Ebony & Irony's overall excellence, as Nelson plunges through the country-ish "Got a New Truck" (with a smashing piano part courtesy of Marcia Ball) and a stunning rendition of David Egan's "Even Now," before taking a sharp left turn into the rollicking "Quicksand." Nelson's detailed liner notes describe this, her 20th album, as the record she's been trying to make for the last 30 years. Though it's in the nature of the artist to never be satisfied, one could argue that she's succeeded with this release. Heartfelt, sincere, technically excellent, and brimming with honesty, Ebony & Irony is Nelson's finest effort yet. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
Still One of the Best Voices, but..........2006-06-07
"Temptation Took Control Of Me And I Fell."
Not since her golden days with Mother Earth, her solo "Country" album, and a few tracks soon thereafter has Ms. Nelson managed to come up with a set of tracks that, in their melodies, lyrics and especially arrangements, can hark back to the Tracy of that era.
In those earlier works, she could break my heart with a mournful wail or set it thumping out of control with a kickass gospel romp.
I listened to this new CD many, many times trying to find the qualities described in the earlier reviews, but alas, it didn't click for me. For those who don't apply the same standard of measurement to Ms. Nelson's work as I do, this is certainly a reasonably good CD and a fair representation of her performance skills.
If you're an old-timer like me and looking for the Tracy of "Down So Low" or "Mother Earth" or "Need Your Love So Bad," I don't think you'll find it here. But keep hoping. Tracy, I know it's out there somewhere, and I know you'll find it again.
Tracy Keeps on Truckin'.......2003-05-31
At Long Last!!.......2001-05-31
I received my autographed copy of E&I a week ago and have been playing it virtually non-stop since. As a fan, I love almost all of her recorded works, but I can readily understand why this recording is special to the artist herself. Tracy has never sounded better. She sounds truly energized and committed. From the first track ("You Will Find Me There") on, I could hear playful twists in the phrasing that I've never heard her do before. And some of the tracks, e.g. Mose Allison's jazz standard "How Much Truth," provide whole new ground for this brilliant vocalist to explore. She pulls it all off with aplomb. Some performers make a big deal about "reinventing" themselves by changing their image every now and then. Tracy Nelson reinvents herself with each new song. And ultimately, with her, it's all about the singing.
I understand why one of the previous reviewers and some other fans might be a little put off by the eclecticism displayed on this album. Nelson has never ever been a one-genre artist however. It is true that her last label seemed to want her to focus mainly on blues-based material, and it's understandable why. She sings the blues with astonishing power and conviction--but it is not all that she's about. As with Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur and the recently re-surfaced Judy Henske, Nelson is beyond any one musical genre. Her eclecticism is a deeply rooted and genuine one, however. It's clear that she's not just out to put on a variety show.
Every track on this CD presents us with a different side of this great singer. She teams up once again with old buddy and former label mate, Marcia Ball for the rollicking "Got A New Truck" and graciously acknowledges a new generation of emerging talent by recording the songs of young artists like Bekka Bramlett (Bonnie and Delaney's daughter) and her Tennessee neighbor Alice Newman, whom she's known since she (Alice) was a child. The latter song, the beautiful "Last Chance" is given an Irish folkie treatment and is just haunting.
It's important to stress that the end result is not a mere grab bag of styles: it is a reflection of a complex artist who has come into her own and who will hopefully finally get the audience she deserves.
Underrated Singer Belts Out a Winner.......2001-05-30
This latest album, Ebony and Irony, exceeded my expectations, which were already quite high. Nelson has a song as rich as a dark brewed cup of coffee and as smooth as silk.
Her choice of songs on this latest album are steller and ecclectic. From blues to show tunes to Irish ballads, Nelson wraps her voice effortlessly around the heartbreak and joy of each lyric and lifts it to new heights as no other vocalist can.
If you are already familiar with the history of Tracy Nelson's solo career, this album will not disappoint. If you have not given her a listen, do not hesitate to take this one home. You will become an instant fan.
NOTE: Thank goodness someone had the good sense to re-release Tracy Nelson's wonderful self titled CD last year with "Slow Fall" and "After the Fire is Gone" as well as numerous other gems. If only this artist would get the kudos and noteriety she so richly deserves. Perhaps this latest release will do just that.
--Carol Sveilich San Diego
A Promise Fulfilled.......2001-05-15
I say this because her voice compares favorably with just about any other pop, blues, country or R & B artist you can name, yet she has never been a household word (yes, she has recorded in all these genres, and more). She has promised since this album was canned two years ago that it would be the crowning achievement in her 30+ year career. She does not disappoint.
Any fan of any singer will make the same claim about their favorite artist, which is understandable. But if you take any one of Ms. Nelson's vocals and compare them to anybody else out there, I guarantee you will see what I mean. No one can match her for power, emotion or sheer artistry. The problem is that she has never been true to any one style (the true mark of a genius) and so is frquently ignored by those who don't know how to label her music. Her records all leave you with the feeling that she sings and records purely for the joy of singing; for this she is both refreshing and exciting. As others have remarked, in a world where fashion statements are commonly mistaken for musical artistry, she hold her head high above those whose sole consideration is their own desire to be rich and famous. As for the contents of this album, one listen to "EVEN NOW" "STRONGEST WEAKNESS" or any of the other tracks will tell you all you need to know. I own all of Ms. Nelson's other 20 releases, and this CD has quickly risen to the top of my favorite list.
If you have no other Tracy Nelson, get this album. If you think that taste, artistry or originality is dead you owe it to yourself to check it out. She will become one of your favorite singers, or I'll eat my hat.

Album Description
This is a live album of 17 original songs performed and written by Bill Hicks--the fiddler and co-founder of the Red Clay Ramblers, NOT the deceased comedian of the same name. The songs range from witty to wry--reflecting life on the road and life in general. Bill plays guitar only (as it's live and he's not fast enough any more to grab the fiddle when the breaks come around).Customer Reviews:

Absolutely Wonderfull!!!.......2002-06-29
"Kick Me, I'm a Tree".......2002-06-10
They met, paths converged. Marshall told Kerouac about the literary scene at Chapel Hill - how his fans would lay their drugs, booze and bodies at his feet, and the self-ravaged poet could not resist the flattery. So Jack Kerouac passed through a few of our lives shortly before he left the earth. Live in a bar/coffee house in Chapel Hill, about 35 years later, Bill Hicks recalls and invokes this visit in "Wet July" (track 6), in the same way that he ruminates over less significant events - some real, some not - all authentic, in which (if you are good at reading between the lines) you can find little pearls of wisdom. Usually unspoken. Kind of like meditating on that old Zen Koan: "What is the sound of a solid iron flute, played upside down?" Answer: "Beanpaste that smells like beanpaste is no good."
This collection of songs (perhaps poems set to music is more correct) is not a pretty, slick piece of Nashville packaging. It is neither for the faint of heart, nor the weak of will. You have to work hard to pry out those oysters. But each is guaranteed to have a pearl. Not that I've been clever enough to find them all...
The upside to this is that you can listen to the songs over and over and over, as you slip into the warm nocturnal Southern breeze blowing through the Spanish Moss of Bill's brain. Or let your feet play in the sandy beaches at Okrakoke, where Bill and his musician-wife Libby spend a lot of time these days.
Bill holds steadfastly to many of the ideals we all held so true back when I knew him at Chapel Hill in the sixties, the essence of which, I believe, can be summarized thusly: the journey is what It is all about. The question is the answer. And there are moments of vision in the most unexpected situations, (like "The SOB in the Carvel Truck" that passes him on the right and makes him swerve into the twilight zone) that reveal a glimpse of the truth and beauty of our ephemeral lives, which is always right there under our noses, just out of reach, or maybe not.
There are a few tunes that are just pure fun like "Uncle Charlie's Revenge" and "Play 'Rocky Top'" and others, that you just have to listen to again and again before they make much sense. His "dissertation on bars" ends with "Last Call", which, in my humble opinion, buggers all description. Here is the third verse, without the snakelike guitar accompaniment:
"So anyhow one night a drifter came in
And swayed down the aisle in his long cowboy coat,
His spurs making tiny Oooommmm-ish like notes,
And the moon making sparkles on his buckles and irons,
And he sat down beside me and ordered a brew.
"How far is this engine takin' this rig?"
I asked him--a kind of a "howdy" I guess--
And he looked at me gently, like Clint Eastwood would,
And drew his revolver, gave the chambers a whack
And said with a smile, 'It's a circular track.'"
Though Bill is one of my favorite old time fiddlers, no, my favorite (but don't tell that to whomever I'm playing [banjo] with these days), he plays strictly guitar on this album. His rhythm guitar work is quite amazing. Not only does he find the soul of each poem/song, he can cook that stuff up like gumbo. I had to email him to ask him if it was only one guitar. It is.
As you approach this album keep in mind, this guy is a philosopher, a poet, and an artist. This is the real Bill Hicks. He has dared to bare his soul. And, I think, it is his honesty and integrity that does not want to make it too easy for the listener.
"Comparisons are odious", as a quote, is attributed in Bartlett's to Sir John Fortescue, who apparently said it first, back in the 15th century. The important thing is not who said it first, but what it means. In Bill's case it means it would be odious to compare his song/poems to anyone else's writing, Kerouac notwithstanding, because of the unique quality of his art.

Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07
With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.
Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.
Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.
Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).
As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.
Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19

RELEASE YOUR MIND FROM THE BONDAGE OF BONDAGES THAT HOLD YOUR MIND IN BONDAGE. LOOSEN THOSE BUCKLES ON YOUR JACKET OR POLITELY ASK THE NURSE TO DO IT FOR YOU.
HEY, TAKE A LITTLE TIME FOR YOURSELF AND ANSWER THOSE VOICES IN YOUR HEAD THAT WANT YOU TO... WHAT WAS THAT? HEY, HOW DID YOU PEOPLE GET IN MY HEAD?
MUST FIND THE TIN FOIL HAT!!!

Album Description
Pleasurecraft presents "Lost Patterns," the band's first since "Transmitter", the four-song EP, which laid the groundwork for their sound in 2002.After developing their live show in their hometown (Seattle) and the Northwest, Pleasurecraft set their sites on creating a full-length CD of new material. Hunkering down in keyboardist/producer Kirk Bentley's Hair Salon home studio, they have emerged with a dazzling full-length. Without a trace of irony, Pleasurecraft brings you songs laden with snippets of the past. Right from the start, the album delivers dreamy pop bliss and dark, atmospheric undertones. Guitarists Bryan Manzo and Patrick Partington layer it on thick with guitar sounds of every make and model--adding an indie-rock feel to the din of computers. My Young and Kirk Bentley twist and tweak away at the sounds coming from their machines, and somehow still manage to sing melodies that nest in your brain at an almost alarming rate.
This is music made by machines, but with humans planted firmly in the driver's seat. Ignoring the mechanical and cold which surrounds so much of the genre, Pleasurecraft create melodies that swirl within a backbeat of dark and danceable pop.
