Sublime!.......2007-07-19
So lovely I think we'll need to get a second copy because we might just wear out the one we have! The concertos are an especially nice added treat!
plays every day!.......2007-06-14
This tape is played every day in our house at nap time - it is beautiful and wonderful.
Fun.......2007-05-26
I'm not really much in the way of a music expert, but I really enjoyed this cd.
Wonderful recording!.......2007-05-20
I purchased this recording for my grandson, who is studying the Vivaldi Violin Concerto in A minor. This is a fortunate time for instrumental music students, as, through the medium of digital sound, they can purchase a CD and hear the music, as played by world-class players.
The CD technology eliminates the old game of "drop the needle!" Wonderful!
I recently purchased a boxed set of the recorded work of classical clarinetist Reginald Kell. It was wonderful to hear that music again! I lost my LPs in a fire, and never thought I could find them again!
I just love CDs! And thank you, Amazon, for giving us a pipeline to such wonderful music!
If all music were so beautiful.......2007-01-12
Four seasons is one of my favorite pieces. With Itzhak Perlman at the helm, this rendition is flawless as one would rightfully expect.

While it may not be the most rewarding way to approach this music in the long run, having four star violinists dish up a season apiece is a lot of fun, especially if you're interested in comparing styles and sounds. Mintz is bright and wiry; Perlman rich, brilliant and intense; Zukerman dark and suave; and Stern has that marvelous, warm, "old-school" sound with an almost vocal vibrato. And the violins of the Israel Philharmonic? They play as though every one of them could step up and take a solo, no doubt because having four luminaries on the stage made them want to give of their best. While the interpretations, individually and collectively, don't offer much that is new or remarkable, the sense of occasion is palpable. DG's live recording, made at the Huberman Festival in Israel in 1982, is nicely balanced and quite atmospheric. --Ted Libbey

Experience and energy.......2007-05-04
The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi is so familiar to listeners of orchestral music that mention of the work is likely to get a few eye rolls, or even yawns, and all this exposure to the Seasons means there are a lot of recordings in the musical domain. So, with all these recordings, which one best represents Vivaldi's intent? There are two reasons this performance is the best Le quattro stagioni. The first reason is the amount of experience and talent the solo violinists brought to the work. The culmination of decades-long familiarity is easy to hear with artists like Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman, and then add the gift of genius in Isaac Stern and Shlomo Mintz. Not often considered, also, this recording is of a live performance, the Huberman Festival in 1982, and the audience provides an infusion of energy to where every passage is crisp and clean and passionate. The final allegro in Autumn, for example, is so bright, so resplendently paced, that there has to be some unknown force of perfection at play. It was the audience, listening, interacting with their minds, helping the musicians to release the music to a sort of cumulative, artistic intuition.
An interesting "Four Seasons"..........2006-01-21
In this curious album, Maestro Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra invte a party of four of the most talented male violinists to perform Antonio Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and have each of them do one of the seasons. In this live recording (there is also an applause after the end of each music), Stern (one of my favorite violinists) starts off in the spotlight with "Spring", Zukerman awes us with "Summer", Mintz delights us with "Autumn", and Perlman (my other favorite) shines and round off the cycle with "Winter". While some listeners (including myself) may dislike the relatively slow and heavy tempo in contrast to other lighter recordings (including Shaham with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, in my opinion the best performance of the cycle), it's interesting to listen to and feel the four soloist's different insights. It's worth listening.
There are better 4 Seasons out there!.......2003-07-24
I really love Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman, but I think they were both having an "off" day here--this isn't a particularly good Four Seasons. Much better, and far more inspired recording of the Four Seasons is the Trevor Pinnock/Simon Standage recording on Archiv records. Get that one!
Definitive and Sublime.......2003-07-13
This one is for the ages. The four violinists bring out the best in one another without compromising their own timbre. The Israel Philharmonic, always one of the world's top five five orchestras, shines brilliantly proving again Toscanini's statement that the Israel Philharmonic and an orchestra of soloists. The applause is annoying but you forget it quickly.
You've Tried The Rest, Now Try The Best.......2003-01-07
The Four Seasons is a Baroque masterpiece, at paar with all the classic compositions from Bach and Handel. Antonio Vivaldi created, without knowing it, in theory, the first musical tone poem. He was describing through music (primarily a string orchestra) the four seasons-winter, spring, summer and fall, describing what could have been the lines of a poem, or four different scenes. On this recording, with the prestigious label and the virtuouso violinists Iztak Pearlman and Isaac Stern, the experience is the best. Baroque perfection. As is the case with all my reviews, I will discuss the structure of the piece and give my thoughts as to the quality of this particular recording. I have already judged it terrific, and truly the best recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Now it's up to you to hear the recording and get the desire to listen to the whole thing, not just for leisure, but for inspiration and for music appreciation.
The winter movements are appropriately slow, bleak, chilly, you can almost feel the frost on the ground and the snow falling slowly over hazy skies. The faster movements denote a snowstorm, there is no one out in such invernal conditions. The adagio movement is a description of a house with a warm fire burning during the cold front. The soothing strings and the faint quality of the piece can be like a dream. It's truly Vivaldi's most romantic piece.
The spring movement is by far the most joyful. The trees are full of leaves again, the snow has melted and the flowers bloom in the fields. The country folk return to their activities and romance seems to be in the air. The allegro movement is the most famous of the movements, an elegant, virtuosic and brilliant piece for strings, with an accent on the continuo. The spring movement is best heard over a relaxing state- drinking tea, a bubble bath, a dinner, and the same thing can be said about the slower movements of all the Four Seasons. Finally, the summer and fall movements are chalk-full of rich melody, the summer "storm" movement dark and lush, its theme on the rapid violin scale has been featured in films and Deberrs Diamonds commercials. Full of counterpoint, flowing melodies, charming adagios, the Four Seasons makes up the best of Baroque. Vivaldi's creed was forever made upon this composition. I strongly suggest you get this recording. It is for music lovers, for classical music collectors and perfect to relaxe to after a long day at work. Take my word for it. I teach music and dance. Five stars well deserved and kudos to the great masters of the violin, Pearlman and Stern.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best renditions of Vivaldi's Four Seasons out there........2006-09-18
I have to completely disagree with the bad reviews given to this great cd. I absolutely love Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Ever since I listened to them for the first time when I was just a little kid i fell in love with this music. So much so, that I too have a collection of the four season's and honestly, this is my favorite so far. The third movement of Spring is unlike any that I have ever heard; and the first movement of Summer, well, I completely agree with what the previous reviewer said about it. Perlman is a brilliant violinst and this recording shows it. This is a great cd.
The resentment of Pearlman continues.......2004-07-30
This album should truly rank higher than what others have said about it. Pearlman's proficiency does wonders for "Four Seasons."
His attack on Summer, allegro non molto is brisk and almost breathless, transmitting an urgency, a coming rainstorm. And then he explodes with the other strings, dies out, the rain is over, the eaves are dripping in the sun. The movement continues, the urgency is never lost. I suppose it's conducted too fast? I suppose you are concerned that it's either too baroque or not baroque enough? Whatever, such modulations are almost a trifle anymore.
Winter comes with a chill. Now here's where Pearlman gets to shine, dueling with the strings, his single violin singing out against their droaning, like a blast of frigid wind in your face versus the dead cold of a snowstorm. Again, is it too fast? Do they rush the movement? No, it's brilliant. Obviously these are some of Pearlman's decisions, if not all. When you are a genius violinist then you get to make these calls.
So please, stop resenting these sort of decisions that might fall out of the radar of acceptable interpretations. There's a difference, children, between "acceptable" and "bad," and this album is NOT a "bad" interpretation.
This is a wonderful recording........2000-08-15
I was discouraged to read the first two reviews of this. I think this is a brilliant recording of "The Seasons". Perlman is a master of the violin and this recording proves that. My favorite is summer he plays it with such passion and artistry. This is one of the best recordings of this piece I've ever heard. I am happy with the recording and I listen to it as often I can. It is magnificent.
One of the Worst Recordings of the Four Seasons, Honest!.......2000-05-30
I LOVE Vivaldi's Four Seasons...so much so that I have a collection of Four Seasons recordings, and honestly this is the worst recording of it that I have ever purchased! Sure Perlman is a great violinist with peerless technique(I'm a big Perlman fan myself), but that alone won't make a good performance. He rushes through all the passages here, and the tone is so cold and detached. No exuberance or drama, just a bunch of notes played in a cool, detached manner on the violin and backed up with an equally lifeless orchestra. Even worse, in the slow movement of the Spring Concerto, Perlman's violin solos are so loud as to almost totally block out the orchestral accompaniment, which is pretty mediocre anyways. Moreover, the concertos lack character to the point that they all felt like one piece rather than four separate concertos with three movements each. No singing birds here. Somehow the sun doesn't shine in these seasons, the wind doesn't blow, and the autumn leaves are all dull colors. I was so disappointed that I sold this CD to a used CD store!
There are plenty of better modern instruments recordings out there. Almost anything is better than this performance. But for the real Four Seasons, at least the best one that I have heard so far, my vote goes to Trevor Pinnock/English Concert with Simon Standage on the violin (this is a period instruments recording). It has so much more LIFE and BEAUTY with breathtaking, magnificent, gorgeous violin solos by Simon Standage.
Buy the Mutter CD instead.......2000-05-13
This is an amazing recording; "The Four Seasons" is an amazing piece: you can't go wrong. The problem is that Perlman rushes throught it all, rather than savoring it, making it harder to hear. The result is "sparkling" rather than "scintillating". Of course, if you just listen to it, you will hear both glory and beauty; how can the brilliant first movement of "Spring" be played in any way less than totally passionate? In the second movement of "Winter" you can nearly see the icicles melting outside the window or the blazing fire; that's how it was written. In some points it is even better than the Mutter disc, because she has so much dynamic control that it is almost impossible to find a volume level at which the soft parts are audible but the loud parts aren't deafening. I think Perlman intended you to just sit back and relax, and figure out all of the things by yourself.

An error in the product description........2006-09-30
In the "On this CD" description above, selection #6 [tracks 16 - 18] is mislabeled as Violin Concerto in A major, RV 348, and is actually Violin Concerto in A minor, RV 356. Amazon does not provide a means for me to tell them this, so I'm telling you instead!
Klezmer Vivaldi.......2005-10-11
Perlman is without question one of the greatest violin prodigies since Menuhin and Heifetz and is simply an example of perfection particularly with German, Polish, and Klezmer traditions of virtuoso violin. His work is therefore particularly impressive with composers such as Dvorack, Wienawski, or Fritz Kreisler who were strongly influenced by such traditions. If he would have a weak point it would be Italian Baroque pieces such as Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' that are in a very different method and, somewhat less so, Italian Romantic such as Paganini which is in the same musical epoch as his specialty with similar techniques. Despite these technical limitations, Perlman is such a master of his art and the instrument that it is almost really academic. His bow glides across the violin effortlessly bringing both incredible fluidity and clarity in his execution. Perlman is a virtuoso of the first class with his Vivaldi simply sounding more as the sweeter Fritz Kreisler fiddling his romantic pieces in the parlors of Vienna. One thing to remember is that, as with Karajan's or Solti's performances, this is a symphonic performance that is larger than a typical chamber piece and most instruments outside of Perlman's are modern. In terms of purchasing symphonic renditions of this chamber piece, this is one of the best performances particularly because Perlman was young and reaching his zenith which still remains high in place today. For Baroque interpretations, the best I have heard is Pina Carmirelli's 1982 performance with I Musici di Roma which combines an Italian Romantic style with primarily Baroque techniques. They also play almost exclusively on Stradivarius instruments giving the music an unprecedented resonance and quality of sound. Carmirelli has complete mastery over the instrument and actually surpasses Perlman in talent as far as the proper application of Italian Romantic and Baroque techniques. Acardo's performance with I Solisti delle Settimane Musicali di Napoli is also a very comparable one performed with Stradivarius strings. Acardo is actually equal to, if not surpasses, Perlman in his mastery of Paganini and is a foremost virtuoso in the Italian Baroque style of which Perlman is not.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of famous players in this one all vying for attention.......2001-04-12
It seems that there can sometimes be too many famous musicians in a recording and this CD is an example of that. It's as if they're all trying hard to distinguish themselves from each other since it could be the last Four Seasons recording that Isaac Stern will perform in. They seem to go too fast in some areas, too slow in some, and go full force only to back off quickly. They also did some improvisation with some of the pieces, which were okay, but again, too powerful. They really heightened the prescence of the harpsichord, which everyone knows isn't really Vivaldi's strong point in his works. Also, the orchestra does not harmonize well in many areas. I was disappointed by this. But these gripes are about the Four Seasons interpretation. The rest of the pieces on the 2-CD album are pretty solid. If you buy this hoping to hear a great last Four Season's album from Isaac Stern, you'll appreciate that he still has lots of energy, but on a musical level it just pushes too hard in some areas and too soft in others that it almost gets annoying to hear areas where you would expect fortissimo only to hear the orchestra back off oddly on the passage.
