Neglected Masterwork.......2003-11-04

Its really sad how small the classical canon has grown, and even more so how few people listen to classical music at all. The composer Jan Dismas Zelenka is one of the many neglected masters of the late Baroque, and these Lamentations are certainly among his chief works. Their style is difficult for modern listeners to place, lying somewhere between the Baroque and the Rococo but with a hint of Renaissance humanism just out of reach. In fact, I believe they were written just a year or so after Bach's Brandenburg Concertos (1721), but Bach himself was very old-fashioned. This recording is infused with a kind of scholarly pathos and is very likely the top contender for performances of this work.

If you like this kind of stuff I suggest you check out some of Zelenka's instrumental works (try ASIN: B0000034ZD Composizione per Orchestra performed by Collegium 1704), the St. Matthew Passion by Bach (1727, ASIN: B000002S0T under Klemperer with Schwarzkopf), and Pergolesi's gorgeous Stabat Mater (1736 ASIN: B000001G5Q). For a little more of a reach, try the Lamentations of Jeremiah by Thomas Tallis from the mid 17th century. Happy Listening!

A beautiful blend of sound and style........2002-06-13

I've seen Ms. Casei in concert,but never in an Opera. After hearing this CD and seeing the marvelous photos,I realize I've missed something major, something quite beautiful. She has a fire and vitality coupled with a quiet strength in both voice and embodiment of the characters she plays. All different, all compelling.One really gets a sense of the story, the situation from which her character and song spring. Too, the presentation of the CD seems to match the beauty and uniqueness of Ms. Caseis's voice and style. If there's more, I want to hear it!

Nedda Casei's style is as beautiful as her sound.......2002-06-11

I was rather swept away by the style of Ms. Casei: daring and bold and yet there is great tenderness in the quieter moments. She is as fine a singer as any who have sung from the stage at the Metropolitan Opera, and the photos of her in her many different roles, makes me sorry not to have seen one of her many performaces there. I am delighted someone has seen fit to bring this kaleidescope work of Nedda Casei's into one CD. It makes for a grand evening of listening pleasure.I hope this isn't the last.

What a beautiful voice, full of emotion and versitality. I enjoyed listening to every track on this cd. A great varitey of music to savor. Her voice makes you feel as if you are right on stage with her(or at least wish you were!). There is a little bit of something for everyone here. I highly recomend this cd.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-10

This was my first exposure to the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka and my first reaction was "Where has he been? Why haven't I heard this music before? It sounds somewhat like Bach, but it is different enough from Bach in structure and instrumentation that you would not mistake it for Bach. However, like Bach he values counterpoint, fugal technique and careful craftsmanship, besides it's sonorous color which is shown by the use of a variety of obligato wind instruments and in complex chromatic harmony. Having said all of this I need to mention the skill is takes to perform these Lamentations. For that we have 3 excellent soloists: Michael Chance-countertenor; Michael George - bass and John Mark Ainsley-tenor. They each have lengthy solo portions and perform them in a proper emotional framework. I love listening to this disc and have done so many many times. If you haven't heard Zelenka's music this is a good album to start with.
