1 out of 5 stars Every song sounds the same.......2007-04-13

My husband and I buy many Italian CDs so we think we have good judgement after so many purchases. We were somewhat disappointed in this CD. Every song has the same instrumentation and basically sounds the same. We wonder even if the mandolins are "live" or just canned, they sound so tinny and the same each song. This CD could have used more feeling, romance, whatever...possible had there been some sensitive arrangements with solos, etc. Instead, it was the same bunch of mandolin sounds which made for a very boring CD, in our opinion. A few vocals would have helped the monotony, too. Would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Italian music.......2007-03-31

This is a great album of really very traditional Italian music. It is not anglicised but just like you hear when you go to Italian festas.

5 out of 5 stars Italian dinner music.......2007-03-08

Excellent....Perfect! We recently had an Italian themed dinner party and needed just the right instrumental background/mood music. Mandolins from Italy was perfect. We also needed it FAST. Althought shipping was not cheap, we received it on time and made our party a hit.

WELL DONE!

3 out of 5 stars Perfect for a themed party, or just background music!.......2007-02-03

Very cute! Romantic, uplifting, nostalgic background music for an Italian night with friends! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Just like my dad's music.......2007-01-09

I love this music. It takes me back to my childhood when my Dad played the mandolin and my uncle accompanied him on guitar. Some old Italian melodies and some new ones to sing along with. Very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01

This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."

Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.

Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).

A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.

1 out of 5 stars Don't...!!!.......2005-01-24

To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."

4 out of 5 stars Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11

I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.

I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.

The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.

Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.

On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.

3 out of 5 stars Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24

Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.

5 out of 5 stars Surely I am proud to be an Italian-American!!.......2004-06-26

With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!

Oops, I am sorry, Nana.

My Nana has shushed me to "pipe down, little bambino."

I must go down to the dark cellar to count our day's earnings, for it is almost night, and stern Papa will be back soon to close shop and make sure all is well.

5 out of 5 stars Tipo plays Scarlatti.......2007-05-12

Her touch is superb. Her interpretation moves. She plays all of the decorations perfectly without getting lost in them (like Pogo). I like her Scarlatti far more than Horowitz.

4 out of 5 stars A Slight Minority Report.......2007-02-28

I would love to give this CD my full recommendation, but I feel I must at least let others know that Tipo's playing here is just a bit overromantic in style. There is a lot of rubato and really rather extreme molding of dynamics. She is indeed a wonderful pianist and I've loved other recordings she has made, including her fine Goldberg Variations, but I found myself listening more to 'what is she going to do next' (meaning how is she going to haul around the musical pulse or dynamics) than listening to the music itself, at least some of the time.

Still, this is, as piano-playing, quite wonderful. If that sounds like a contradiction to what I'd just said, please understand that I just think her style of playing Scarlatti is not what some purists would expect or want.

One other thing: the sound is a bit reverberant. I don't find it off-putting but some might prefer a drier acoustic.

Scott Morrison

5 out of 5 stars Superb Scarlatti.......2005-10-09

Well, the earlier review has covered almost everything.

I would only add Zacharias's 49 Scarlatti Sonatas (EMI) to the list mentioned, and nonetheless I prefer Tipo in the whole list. And other than elegance and gracefulness, her playing also possesses a remarkable sense of proportion which is essential in both the Baroque and Classical repertoire.

To those who like Tipo's playing, they may find Michelangeli's (or even Lipatti's) Scarlatti delightful as well-- albeit the latters had recorded only a few of them. They shouldn't forget to check Tipo's Clementi out as well: she was the first to record Clementi's complete Sonatas after all: Tipo is a great interpreter of the Italian keyboard literature.

5 out of 5 stars First rate Scarlatti!.......2005-05-16

A fine collection of Scarlatti piano sonatas on several counts: quality of performance; generous number of Scarlatti sonatas, both early and late, on one CD; and price.

Maria Tipo, on the basis of this disc, is a wonderful pianist. A prizewinner in the Queen Elisabeth's International Competition (1952), she is relatively unknown yet seems an assured, highly skilled, elegant and graceful pianist. Her playing sparkles throughout, and grips the listener from the very beginning. Her program ranges from early to late sonatas and, despite the fact that only three of the Scarlatti piano sonatas played here are in minor keys, with seven of the sonatas in G major, her program offers real contrast and variety.

She plays 18 Scarlatti sonatas on one CD. Listening time is about 74 minutes - quite generous. That is more than Horowitz or Pogorelich, which cost more. Tipo's CD is budget price.

In sum, one of the best all Scarlatti Piano Sonata CDs I know, including Horowitz (Sony), Pogorelich (DGG) Pletnev (Virgin) and Andjaparidze (Naxos). This is a disc I've been unable to resist listening to repeatedly, both because it is that good, but also because Maria Tipo plays so many less familiar, top drawer Scarlatti sonatas.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE THIS IN YOUR COLLECTION OF HOROWITZ.......2007-07-13

If you have any Horowitz music in your collection. THEN YOU MUST GET THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS ON DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON. Quality of recording is superb.

    5 out of 5 stars Horowitz: A Digital Legacy.......2004-11-15

This set includes all of the recordings Vladimir Horowitz did for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, including his historical concert in Moscow.

While the context of his return in Moscow is moving, the studio recordings are simply wonderful. The sound quality is impeccable. The Steinway piano sounds warm but yet crisp and sharp. Horowitz still has plenty of power, and if you don't have a good sound system, you will notice that your speakers will literally fail, due to the overwhelming wall of sound that Horowitz creates in the intense parts.

The tender moments are just as exciting, as they are enhanced by the very quiet and clear digital recording process. Liszt's Standchen and Mozart's Piano Concerto No 23 are only two of a myriad of highlights contained on this boxed set. Having these high quality digital recordings of this piano legend is a blessing that you can't afford to miss. And at this price, it's simply irresistible.

For those of you with a larger budget, don't forget the complete masterworks recordings (1962-73) of Vladimir Horowitz on Sony Classical.

5 out of 5 stars The tradition of the new!.......2006-05-08

Respect the egregious significance of Vladimir Horowitz for the great Western audiences, I really should notice that Europe had lived a Century and a half of reluctant Romanticism, while North America was in another historical process; the recent musical history began to write with two important composers: Edward Mac Dowell, a beloved and admired friend of Frau Carreno and Louis Moreau Gotschalk, who accustomed to make those Gargantuan recitals such as that famous Concert with more than one hundred pianists on stage. Indeed, this was an imported costume of those Ages, where the concept of listening music had lessened the value; the visible decay of the music in the second half of the XIX Century is more than obvious. The ominous presence of composers of the artistic height of Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner were concentrated in Germany and Austria; Frank in Belgium and Max Reger in Swiss, but if you take a look around the musical triviality lived in the rest of Europe (with counted and isolated exceptions)where the fireworks of Liszt, Thalberg, and Alkan filled the Concert Halls in Paris, with the elusive music of Lalo or Jules Massenet and the arriving of the new Midas King of the great Halls, Strauss dynasty, included Waldteufel captivated the audiences.

The emotion for watching a piano virtuosi simply had not prize. You should remind the famous tour undertaken by Anton Rubinstein in the last years of the XIX Century. Horowitz contributed conscious or unconsciously to perpetuate the legend. Effectively, he marked a`personal style at the piano; if not let me refresh you these names: William Kapell, John Browning, Gary Graffman. Lori Hollander, Byron Janis, Van Cliburn and Leon Fleisher, were notably influenced with this style. And please tell me who in a sensate state of mind, would be able to send to Europe his promising son or daughter where the flaming wrecks of the WW1 were in the air and the expected fears of a next confrontation was still to come.

Schnabel was a particular exception, since he was hired as Docent in USA, but its influence was relatively small. We should wait to the early Fifties to appreciate other styles and approaches; Gilels, Richter from USRR, Badura Skoda, Demus and Gulda from Austria, but still remained confined for dilettantes the renowned figures such as Edwin Fisher, Michelangeli, Myra Hess and Wilhelm Kempff.

His playing caused true furor during almost four decades. Horowitz now belongs to the legend.

5 out of 5 stars Mature Horowitz And The Best Liszt Sonetto 104.......2005-10-04

I have not much to add to the other reviews. Horowitz made some of his very best recordings when he was already more than 80 years old, and this 2CD (+DVD) set contains many of them, as well as the best recording of Liszt's Sonetto 104 that I know of, or am ever likely to hear.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Magical.......2005-04-17

This album showcases the mighty Vladimir Horowitz in his last years. His life of music is definitive in these masterful interpretations. In these pieces, Mr. Horowitz displays many new ideas on some pieces that have been played, assumed successfully, continually in the same manner.

Two instances - Scriabin's Etude, Op. 8 No. 12 and Mozart's Rondo, K. 511. The maestro's entrance is softer and slower in the former, and in the latter, as stated in the studio chatter, he speeds up the tempo to make it less of a profound statement. It was Horowitz who chastised the new age of pianists on their attempts to play everything slow and prophetic. I believe it was Mr. Horowitz that told David Dubal "Only very few pieces are meant to be played slow" (after comparing performance times of major piano works from the early part of the 20th century to the later part, you will see the difference).

The DVD included in this package is wonderful, but for those who enjoy a more classic approach to the classical period - do not anticipate simple aural enjoyment. Do expect to see one of the greatest pianists ever work his magic at the piano. Do look forward to watching a master correct a mistake by another master. Do count on a memorable experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2004-08-01

Horowitz is simply stunning, and this compilation is an absolute jewel. The added bonus of the DVD performance of Mozart's 23rd is the icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars The piano as an extension of consciousness.......2004-07-25

Mr. Drake has written the definitive review of this recording, but I want to add a few things.
In these recordings, the piano seems merely an extension of Horowitz's consciousness. The translation from his head and his heart to the piano is effortless, and filled with emotion. While listening to this CD, I understood that Horowitz's flawless technique stems not just from a complete knowledge of the pieces, but from his love of the music. He makes the music his own like no other.
This is inspirational music, played by the greatest master of his craft at the height of his powers.
An added bonus is the DVD which accompanies the 2 CD's, a video of the studio recording of Mozart's 23rd piano concerto. Horowitz, in his 80's, has the innocence of a child, playfully joking with the producer, the conductor, the page turner. When he plays, it is with a sense of joy that seems to accompany all of the recordings in this set.
The productions values here are excellent, typical Deutsche Grammophon.
    I'd give this recording a 10 if I could.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great historical value.......2004-11-10

This is a very enjoyable and important collection of generally lesser known Puccini works. The conducting and performances are mostly excellent. For the historically curious, the liner notes provide chronological summaries of the the music, giving details of each piece. These notes would be much more useful if the recording actually followed the same sequence! For some strange reason, the compositions are programmed in random order, except for the first and the last. That puzzlement alone is my reason for four stars. Otherwise, wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Some inspiring moments........2004-05-10

To appreciate Puccini, the production notes tell us, you should know the full Puccini, and this compilation of never before heard and/or little known compositions cover the gamut, from orchestral works to choral pieces, to songs and band music, the latter of which I found least enjoyable, but still interesting. However, taken as a whole, this is a worthwhile addition to one's library. The orchestral pieces, perhaps, are the most enjoyable, reflecting my own bias for the rich sounds and emotional resonance that a full orchestra can emote. You will likely enjoy tracks 1-4. These can be enjoyed standing along as most orchestral works can. However, that is to take nothing away from the truly fine singing and orchestral work when combined in one package such as is done in track 4, where tenor Joseph Calleja, teams with the orchestra (Orchestra Sinfonica de Milano Giuseppe Verdi) ) and full chorus (the Coro de Milano Giuseppe Verdi) in "Cantata `Cessato il suon dell'armi". The result is a rousing blend of solo singing, clear performance and powerful interconnected accompaniment by chorus and orchestra. Some selections make you want to sit and listen and meditate as tracks 8 -12 with kudos to soprano Chiara Taiga in track 9, and the reverence displayed in the composition of track 10's "Adagetto", and very Verdi like Requiem connection in track 11's "Requiem"; other tracks make you feel like working around the house, or in my case, writing a review, with the cats outside and CD on full blast. The CD contains eight truly wonderful world premieres, including the Berio "Turandot" Finale (which I found annoying) and my favorite the moody, flowing "Adagetto". DECCA hit a home run with this one!

    4 out of 5 stars Very Pleasant.......2000-01-10

This is not great music, nor a great performance, but it is pleasant as well as being interesting to hear what successful 18th century comic opera was like. The performance is brisk and amusing, and the whole thing comes off very successfully. While not as striking as the Secret Marriage, it is in the same league, and I find it as enjoyable as most second-rank opera.
