David Russell's program ranges wide and far, from arrangements of such exotica as Arcos' Fantasia on Themes from Verdi's La Traviata to original guitar solos by the likes of Villa Lobos and modern Latin composers. They're all played with technical polish and, more important, genuine musicality. For Russell's playing here, as in his other popular albums for Telarc, has the communicative sparkle that draws the listener into the music, even listeners not especially enamored of the instrument. In arrangements of familiar piano works like the five Grieg Lyric Pieces or Debussy's La Fille aux Chevaux de Lin, Russell's playing is so warmly idiomatic he makes you forget the originals and revel in the rounded, radiant tone of his guitar. Ok. The guitar players are good. But there is so much extra noise such as heavy breathing, the guitarist moving around etc. in many of the pieces. I am only somewhat being humerous when I say I am suprised you don't hear the guitarist belching or passing gas! It is a very, very irritating recording of good guitarists.

Certainly NOT Relaxing.......2006-08-04

This CD would get an average rating if it was merely titled "The World's greatest guitar music". However, this CD is supposed to be "relaxing". Well, it most certainly is NOT. Some of the pieces literally sound like soundtracks to a movie thriller.

Very misleading title to an otherwise pretty good collection of Spanish guitar ballads. If you are looking for something to relax or sleep to, look elsewhere.

From the time I first attended a John Williams concert 40 years ago, I have been a collector of Spanish / Classical guitar music. I often play, on a Ramirez, some of the tunes on these two disks. The selections are wonderful examples of the world's greatest guitar music. I actually take naps while listening to these cd's. The guitarists are excellent; I only wish Denon had listed their artists.

NIce Collection!.......2005-11-12

I listen to a lot of classical guitar (and other stringed instrument) music, and I like this collection. It draws on an unusually wide range of guitar compositions, which is a plus, and it's well produced, with good sound and balance - I think it's a better than average collection.

Anabel Montesinos is a surprise both in talent and musical expression.Normally I dont trust CD's from competition winners, because they might be perfect and even correct in style, but never surprising and showing musical personality.
With her the music breathes life and at the same time it gets filtered through her delicate personality and sound. Elastic phrases, perfect timing for great romantic music.A true enchanting joy to listen!

Ravishing tone from her guitar, and a beautiful sense of the music. This has to be one of the best releases by Naxos in its guitar series. Ranks right up with any of Kraft's things. Buy it -- you will like it!

Beautiful and delicate playing.......2004-05-25

I was extremely surprised to find this naxos guitar recital CD that actually had good playing on it. Montesinos plays with an incredible state of maturity and poise for a 20yr old girl. She isn't afraid to be free with the tempi, which is a nice change from all of these players who play romantic with a stick up their ass. Montesinos however, has chosen great romantic music that is not the standard rep that any softball performer would choose. Even her caprichio arabe is beautifully played and has the same mystery to it, though I have heard it a billion times. It is relieving to hear a competition winner that doesn't sound like the boring, mechanical Azabagic-like guitarist. Overall, incredibly beautiful.

hello, its me kurt again. if you liked the second volume "Schubertiana" then this first volume played by Fukuda is certainly and most definitly for you. The Fantaisie Hungroise by Johann Kaspar Mertz is astonishing, remenisant of Franz Liszt. The aguado piece is played with fire as well as coste's caprice. I loved every second of vol. 1 as i did vol. 2

Brilliant Technique.......2007-01-04

Mertz is likely known to be one of the leading guitarist-composer of romantic era. With the inspiration of a Gaelic bard, Mertz composed the masterpiece Bardenklange Op.13. This set of songs really require great right-hand technique because it is written in style of a piano. Adam Holzman played this pieces with a technique that I couldn't imagine. It is so good that after listening for a while, you forget you are listening a guitar music. It is becoming something else.
The music is in very Austrian style. Romantic and not like Regondi,Coste,Paganini,Giuliani or other Romantic era composers. Mertz obviously created his own style. According to the notes, he stood away from the general romantic style. We can say he converted piano music into the guitar which required more complexity. If you like nothing out of the CD, you must pay respect the arpeggios.
Naxos has done it again with its guitar collection series by bringing the most unknown and rare up to the surface.

This is a remarkable disc of music for the guitar. Steve Kostelnik displays the utmost virtuosity and musicianship on this disc. The Batchelor, and Mertz are dazzling displays of impressive technique. The Bach is sublime. The new pieces by Kulp are also very engaging and well played. A must have for any fan of the classical guitar!

I've been listening to classical guitar music and players since Segovia live forty years ago, with a large recording collection, and I found this album by Franco Platino to be excellent music, fine playing, and most enjoyable listening. I ordered this CD after meeting him, following a guitar concert in the DC area, and I'm quite pleased with this find.

As a classical guitarist I have undoubtedly listened to hundreds of guitarists attempt the same repertoire as Franco Platino. However, I have never witnessed anyone-- ANYONE-- approach the level of musicianship that Mr. Platino has reached. Wonderful CD! I'm not well-educated in terms of music, but have to say that this is fantastic. I'm not at all uncomfortable having this disk in the cd player along with Andres Segovia.

There is little that is unusual in the content of the programme; what is unusual is the standard of its performance. This is one of the finest records of guitar playing I have encountered in many years. It is of star quality in every respect and, given the stylistic range and difficulty of the music, that is an accolade not to be taken lightly.

When David Russell made this debut CD (he had done one LP earlier), he was a young musician on his way up. Now, he records for Telarc and is quite well known. GHA, a Belgian label specializing in guitar music, has done well to keep this CD available. The music has more substance than you will find on the average collection of guitar miscellany (especially Mertz's Elegie, quite a touching piece), and the congruent yet varied romantic program makes for good listening. Russell plays superbly, making sure that the pieces sound different from each other, and his guitar is realistically captured by the recording. - -Leslie Gerber

Great recording of little-known music.......2004-08-01

David Russell is a classical guitarist whose star has only recently begin to shine as brightly as it should, but this early CD of it shows that he should have been up there alongside Bream and Williams ages ago.

The music in this CD are from fairly obscure composers, even among classical guitarist, but they are all immediately accessible and enjoyable. In particular, the music of Mertz and Regondi deserve a far greater exposure, for they are beautiful and romantic compositions. In particular, Regondi's Reverie Nocturne is a piece which reminds me a lot of Chopin's piano Ballades in mood and temperament, and for me this piece alone makes the album worth buying.

The playing by Russell is so good that it seems to defy what I consider possible on the guitar at times, and this combined with this tasteful interpretations show the music in the best possible light.

If you're looking for a recording of non-Spanish, romantic classical guitar music, then look no further.

Gorgeous Sound.......2003-01-25

Russell plays beautifully on this CD. The sound, with its clarity and depth, rivals that of the piano but has the added tonal variety of the guitar. The selections are very enjoyable, especially the "Introduction et Polonaise" by Coste and the "Fantaisie Hongroise" by Mertz. The tremolo piece by Regondi is very sweet as well. There are only 8 pieces, but all are long. A great CD for classical guitar enthusiasts and acoustic music lovers.
