5 out of 5 stars Ha-cha!.......2007-01-14

The EDISON record company didn't release electrical transcriptions until June of 1928, fully three years after the process had been perfected. This delay was due to stubborn resistance from the head man himself. By the mid-'20s, Thomas Edison was nearly deaf. Since he had final OK on which records went into production, Edison needed a way to preview company test pressings. He discovered that by biting down on the cabinet of an acoustic gramophone, sound waves would travel through his jawbone to the inner ear, thus he could listen to these 78s.

Edison couldn't distinguish between the new electrical recordings, which had a far wider frequency range, and the old-style acoustic ones, so he saw no need to modernize. It was only after company sales tanked that he agreed to release what became known as "ELECTRICALLY RECORDED --Needle Type-- RECORDS." The EDISON folks manufactured these until October of 1929, a mere 16 months, and then ceased operations altogether.

EDISON laterals, some of the rarest of 78s, are highly prized by collectors. Many of the tracks on the CDs issued by DIAMOND CUT PRODUCTIONS, including some on HOT DANCE OF THE ROARING 20'S, are one-of-a-kind test pressings. All come from the EDISON co. archives. Sound quality of these nearly 80-year-old sides is remarkably good. The HOT DANCE album has a 12 page booklet, including seven that detail the EDISON records story.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Sound! Wonderful History.......2003-03-31

This CD has beautiful sound quality notwithstanding the fact that it was mastered at the very beginning of the electrical recording era. These cuts are almost impossible to get anywhere else. Very fine job.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT CD OF "HOT" DANCE BANDS OF THE 20'S.......2000-09-08

EVEN 1920'S JAZZ COLLECTORS ARE UNLIKELY TO HAVE HEARD THESE RARITIES, THIS SET IS HIGHLY ENJOYABLE, AND FEATURES SOME HOT SOLOS, AND IS VERY JAZZ ORIENTED. ASIDE FROM A COUPLE OF BAD BAND VOCALS THIS CD IS GREAT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, ESPECIALLY TO COLLECTORS OF 20'S JAZZ, WHO ARE UNLIKEY TO HAVE ANY OF THIS MATERIAL.

5 out of 5 stars Great roaring 20's dance bands !.......2000-04-03

If you like the later 20's dance music you will be pleased. Very good lively tunes. I hope they decide to issue more in this series. Highly recommended !

    Album Description

Grant Simpson brings Stride piano to life. Stride piano is one of the oldest styles of jazz piano. Related to Ragtime, "Stride" flourished in the 1920s in the hands of great practitioners like James P. Johnson, Willie "The Lion" Smith, and Fats Waller, along with less well-known but legendary players, such as "The Beetle" and Don Lambert. The biggest difference between Ragtime and Stride piano playing is its emphasis on improvisation and the flexibility that allows a pianist to "stride" any piece of music from an operatic aria to a Broadway show tune.

On this CD, Grant presents a wide-ranging program that features songs by the fathers of Stride piano and early jazz (including one by that "second-generation" master, Dick Wellstood), some standards and most importantly, five of his own compositions. Even though Stride piano has its origins in the end of the Ragtime era, Grant's new works show how fresh and timeless this style can be. In fact, Grant is helping to ensure Stride piano's continued good health and growth in this new century. -Alan Matheson

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fine Stride Piano.......2006-07-25

    ÿ
Grant Simpson is one of the finest of the current generation of stride pianists. Lucky enough to have met and learned from such piano greats as Dick Wellstood, Ralph Sutton and Dave McKenna, he has drawn these influences together into a cohesive personal style in the classic jazz piano tradition. This fine solo CD offers an excellent showcase for his keyboard skills.

Simpson plays a number of stride standards by James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and Willie "The Lion" Smith, and gives them fine idiomatic readings which are personal interpretations rather than the rather anaemic recreations of classic recordings which some contemporary pianists produce.

Equally effective are the original pieces, which range from fast stride in "Stridin' for HJ", through to the romantic ballad "So Beautiful Like You".

Grant Simpson is an evangelist for stride piano, and in addition to performing [...].

A fine CD, excellently recorded, and strongly recommended to lovers of stride piano.

4 out of 5 stars Good Sound of the 20's.......2004-04-02

Even though I am just 40, I was brought up by several earlier generations, so, I've been in love with Roaring 20's music since I was 10 years old. This CD is no disappointment. It gives you that nostalgic feeling of being right there as you hear the original artists of the decade performing the ageless tunes. However, I could have done without the modern piano-roll inclusions. I would have kept the songs entirely original. This is REAL music, which has been dead for some time, now. Enjoy the syncopated sound with no obscenity, no vulgarity, no rap, no driving bass. I recommend anything from the 20's, and this is NO exception. [...]

        1 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2003-03-10

After listening to this CD, I began to wonder how anyone at anytime could even survive listening to anthing this awful. Maybe if you're on drugs, this msic may inspire a good trip, but for anyone sane do not even contemplate purchasing this CD.
