Mario Lanza Opera.......2007-05-12
Outstanding.......2006-11-06
Unsurpassed!.......2005-12-13
True, musically Mario made some mistakes....but so has every other great tenor in history....from Caruso to Pavarotti and beyond!
And perhaps he sang some arias with too much fortissimo....so what?
Every single song on here, be it among his best or worst work, is a masterpiece when compared to renditions of the same arias by other, more legit and operatically acclaimed tenors.
In order to "get" Lanza one must discard all notions of "finesse", "grace" and " elegance" for Lanza operated, and sang on raw, unadulterated, gut wrenching emotion.
THAT was the genious of Mario Lanza.
We can argue for another 40 years as to his operatic legitimacy...for nought!
Lanza was a VOCAL master and his approach to song was as unconventional and idiosyncratic as was his life.
That's what makes these songs so special and unique.
No one other than perhaps Corelli had the voice and the balls to sing with such uninhibited emotion and that's what this CD is all about.
It is a testament of a great voice.
The fact that Lanza did not have the benefit of a great conductor or teacher guiding him through most of his career, makes these recordings all the more great.
He sang the music as he felt it and that's a big no-no in the stuffy, overbearing and self-righteous world of opera.
Lanza earned millions of dollars because his voice touched all who heard it. His art brought more people to opera than all the leading tenors of his day combined....and this during the golden age of tenors and opera as a whole!
The only word of lesser praise I can offer is the inclusion of the duets. Mario did not have the temprament for duet singing, and subsequently he ended up drowning his partners out, or engaging in a sort of vocal warfare which was the case with much of what he and Grayson recorded during his MGM days.
The arias are great....the duets are medicore on all accounts.
In closing, I apologize for not having spen time on the actual songs. It's been done to death.
All I can say is that, if you wish to hear opera arias sung in a way such as will never be heard again in our lifetime, then this is a CD for you.
If you want proper, technically proficient opera, sung by some big name opera jerk, then stick to that....you'll only end up feeling like all the other good people who have so much negative to say about this CD.
BMG Needs to hire Folks in the Know.......2004-06-15
Mario Lanza WAS a trained opera singer.......2003-11-13
Mario had extensive operatic training from some top teachers. He was sought after by many opera companies, including the Met in New York.
It is true that some of Mario's recordings are not as good as others. He did various versions of much of his material, both live and studio, so of course you will find some you prefer to others. But the beauty, power and expressiveness of his voice is unmatched by any tenor I have ever heard.

A very good CD and a talented singer.......2001-12-01
Mr. Leech has an incredible top and is surely one of the rising stars of our time. He doesn't rise to the quality of Ben Heppner or Roberto Alagna, but he is light years ahead of Andrea Boccelli and the host of pseudo-singers that are now haunting the classical CD sections at most music stores. I would have given Leech 5 stars if he had corrected that wobble I referred to, but even with it, he is an excellent singer, and this CD would make a very nice addition to anyone's classical voice collection. I have a feeling we'll be hearing more from Mr. Leech in the future.

A pleasing collection.......2005-09-29
The only missing thing in all of these selections was heart. The notes were perfect. The singers really sang well with nearly perfect techniques. Nothing was amiss there. What seemed to be missing was heart, the soul of what the music and the words were saying. It was like NONE of these artists (excepting Podles, who for the life of me is a wonderful contralto, not a soprano, so why she is on this disk, I have no clue, excepting perhaps someone viewed Rosina's aria to be a "soprano aria") really understood Italian Opera Style. They sang the notes but didn't know what little touches make it fit the style of the music. The legato lines were lovely, in the French or even German manner, but not based in the Italian manner of the portamento. What little touches of glissandi when descending from high notes was not without labor. Yet, none of that ruined the music or made it sound bad in the slighest degree. It just reminded us of the things that we are used to that are missing. There was no delicate touches one is used to with Callas or Tebaldi, no coloratura energy one is excited with in Sutherland, none of the delicate pianissimi or portamenti one associates with Caballe. All these mentioned singers knew Italian style, and knew it well. Those little touches are what gives Italian style its heart, its soul, and that melting emotional attachment. These singers all sang to perfection, note perfect, but lacked the proper understanding of the music they sang.
Having said this, by no means is this a bad CD, quite the contrary, it is excellent and well worth the money and very enjoyable. ALL of these singers have great talent, are well trained, have incredible skills with the music they sing. We are not being forced to listen to inferior performances at all. ALL these singers sing out, with force, not necessarily loudly, but with a full bodied sound, even in pianissimi. It is only those small points of understanding of Italian style that they are lacking. Yet, that is forgivable considering that in their countries of origin this music is NEW. They were never allowed to sing it, and it has no tradition behind it that they can turn to. So, they learned to sing it with the tradition of vocal perfection they were used to. The results is vocal mastery, all that is needed is more heart.
However, it is not this fact that made it so I gave it a 4 star rating rather than a 5. Were these above mentioned things the only troubles, I would have awarded this recording a 5 star without hesitation. It was the quality of sound. Again, it is sort of "distant" like we are listening in to a recording session and not part of the experience. That is sad, for these singers have so much to offer. We should feel we are "there" experiencing it with them. I wish NAXOS technicians would work on this aspect. Their recordings are so well thought out in other ways that it is so sad that this technical flaw removes the complete enjoyment possible.

Dobbs is currently a judge for the Marian Anderson Vocal Competition. Hearing this CD places you in a different time when she made such an impact on music-making as a whole. This CD is great for the vocal student learning new songs and diction, and at the same time for the expert seeking quality. Simply exceptional, it's a CD you can't just copy/burn from a friend.

Real Verdi singing.......2006-05-08
Leonard Warren Had a Great Voice.......2005-11-02
A great collection.......2004-10-12
This collection shows the artistry of Leonard Warren. On the first cd, is the work most people would recognize Warren for, Rigoletto, Iago, with a few roles he didn't normally play thrown in, such as Escamillio, and most interestingly, Wolfram from Tannhauser.
The second cd is fun only if, like me, you like to hear opera singers singing, and singing well I might add, in a different medium. On this cd, Leonard Warren sings sea shanties, Irish songs, religious songs, all with that marvelous instrument of his. It was a side of Leonard Warren I Was excited to hear, to hear this American Baritone singing in English for once.
It's fantastic to see an artist of his calibre getting the recognition he deserves, and the two cds are an excellent purchase.
A magnificent collection.......2003-04-25
One of the Richest High Baritones of the Century..........2001-09-08
Listen to his renditions of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, the four sea shanties gracing this disc, and America the Beautiful. How many singers have ever rendered these old songs with such enthusiasm and beauty? To my ears, few can compare. A Little Bit of Heaven is a charming little piece of nostalgia for old Ireland, with perfectly placed high notes that provide a baritone counterpoint to the marvelous Scottish and Irish tenors that have graced our ears throughout this century. The sound on most of the songs is clear, showing off Warren's voice to his and the listeners' advantage.
Now we come to the opera arias and there's a rich assortment on display here. The Gounod Faust aria is from a rare Russian concert recording and is gorgeous, though it's accompanied by a piano. (Nothing against pianos, but I wanted the full orchestra. On other selections in the songs CD, the piano works superbly. Just a matter of personal taste.) The classic Scintille Diamant from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman shows off his upper range, as he hits the high G-sharps with authority and ease. One of my favorites is the great aria from Verdi's MacBeth, in which Warren gets it all together. MacBeth's humanity is rarely on display in this version of the drama, but here it is in spades, along with his arrogance, fear, and anger at being attacked. "Birnam Wood on the march indeed!" The ease and fullness of the high notes, which are all in service to one of Warren's greatest characterizations, are a wonder.
Don't get the idea that only his high notes sounded good, or that Warren was a bellowing beast. He floated a pillowy pianissimo that has to be heard to be believed. The only other baritone voice that compares in this respect, of those whom I have heard, is Cornell MacNeil. I regret that there seems to be no great baritone duets these two great singers could have engaged in, like Verdi provided for bassos in Don Carlos. Does anyone out there remember either of the two great performances by Ghiaurov and Talvela of the King Philip/Grand Inquisitor duets under either Stein or Solti?
Back to Leonard Warren...
In terms of sound on the opera selections, the later, the better, though most of the pieces sound fine. I must agree a bit with an earlier reviewer in the case of Il Balen, from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The sound is fuzzy, bloated, and unclear, at least on my machine... but most all the others sound fine on the same machine. What happened? I had several versions of this great aria on LP, and I do remember one of them being well below the sonic standard of any of the others. The version on the old Cellini conducted complete recording with Bjoerling and Milanov sounded fine, as did the version he recorded with Leontyne Price and Richard Tucker. Why have this one, which does a disservice to the singer and the CD as a whole? And where is his incredible Per me ora fatale from the same opera? Even hearing a badly recorded version of Leonard Warren performing this aria would be a thrill. His singing of Il Balen is excellent- it just sounds foggy. Except for that, I would recommend this set to anyone interested in Warren's singing who might not have many of these recordings on CD. If you have virtually all of them, why bother with this set... unless there's a song you just cannot live without?
The Otello excerpts are exceptional, and there's the treats of his Nemico della patria (Andrea Chenier by Giordano) and Di Provenza (La Traviata) which are my favorite versions of these arias.
To those who might love the singing of Sherrill Milnes and Thomas Hampson, Leonard Warren should be heard and savored for what he was: an American original we can all be proud of.
