1 out of 5 stars Not good.......2004-09-19

I am a huge James Galway fan, but I thought this recording was strangely off. He just seemed to be toodling his way along without a sense of direction, and the lines of the music didn't come through -- at least not to me. There were some good moments, but not enough, and some moments when I could swear he was actually off-key or not quite in sync with the other two musicians. I'm tossing it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-03-04

Irishman, James Galway, is the 'most oustanding flautist of his generation', as is stated in the liner notes. This is Chamber music at its best. I am no expert when it comes to Classical music, but I do know what I like, and I also know good music when I hear it. This is an album that is easily accessible to people who, like myself, are just begginning to discover the wonders of this type of music. You most certainly do not need to be a Classical afficionado to appreciate the beauty of this album. It is my first introduction to James Galway, but certainly not my last.

5 out of 5 stars Just Perfect!.......2000-03-10

This is a must recording for all bach's and flute lovers. Galway shows a technical skill that makes this interpretation even better of Rampal, Nicolet or Larrieu, with a precise timing and phrasing. The excesive sound processing and non very Barroque interpretation can be a weak point for the most classical and ortodox audience, who probably prefer Aurèl Nicolet. Anyway, this is the spatial sound i like!.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750): Flute Sonatas Vol. 2. Partita in A Minor BWV 1013; Sonata in C Major BWV 1033 in two versions; Sonata in E Flat Major BWV 1031; Sonata in G Minor WV 1020. Performed by Janet See, baroque transverse flute; Davitt Moroney, harpsichord; Mary Springfels, viola da gamba.
Recorded in March 1990 by Skywalker Sound of Marin County, California.
Harmonia Mundi, originally released as the second CD of the set HMU 907024.25, now re-released in the budget Classical Express series as HMCX 2957025. Total time: 57’15”.

The first volume of Bach’s flute sonatas by the same performers (HMCX 3957024) has been given almost unanimous praise by critics and Amazon reviewers alike. This second volume continues the marvelous performance on period instruments by three of America’s most accomplished baroque musicians. The main difference between the two CDs is the fact that the pieces on this CD are more controversial from a musicological standpoint and that Janet See has opted to play two of them as flute solos. BWV 1013, the partita in A minor, is an older piece that Bach possibly wrote for French virtuoso flautist Buffardin in Dresden. Janet See gives a spirited performance, and it is probably only the very last note of the Allemande (where she concludes the movement with a loud and rather shrill tone) where opinions will differ. BWV 1033 has been classed by musicologists as spurious, possibly as a work by Bach’s second son Carl Philipp Emanuel. Davitt Moroney, obviously the driving musicological force behind the recording, thinks that Johann Sebastian may have written the flute part, while Carl Philipp Emanuel added the bass line. Therefore the piece has been recorded here twice, once as a flute solo and once with the bass line (including Mary Springfels playing a lovely continuo in the Allegro second movement). Janet See was not content to play the flute solo movement in exactly the same way as in the trio sonata version, and a comparison is well worth the making: the solo version is slightly longer and contains some effects that would have been misplaced in an ensemble version.

BWV 1031 has also been considered spurious by some, but Davitt Moroney is convinced of its genuineness. And the last item of the program, BWV 1020, is well-known for being of doubtful provenience; Moroney agrees with the majority of musicologists that it is probably a work by the youthful Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The majority of surviving manuscripts describe the piece as being for violin, but Moroney points out in his notes that its range is much more suited to the transverse flute (and I have another recording of the piece where the oboe is used). The playing is everywhere excellent, and the wonderful sound of Davitt Moroney’s copy of a Parisian harpsichord from the year 1707 is a further plus (although one might query the use of a French instrument for music that was so firmly anchored in Saxony).

Anyone who has Volume 1 of this set should have no qualms about buying Volume 2 and enjoying it equally as much as that first CD.

5 out of 5 stars Jarrett and Petri are superb.......2004-02-27

Often I will purchase a CD based on its cover. A quirk of mine, but I find that for me the packaging is often a reflection of the musical value within. On the cover of this album you see Keith and Michala in mysterious bluish tones - looking genuinely pleased to be here, and perhaps a little amused. They are accompanied by a black cat. Something sort of magic about that. I know not a whit about either harpsicord or recorder playing, but as a musician, I assure you that the playing is superbly colored- sometimes sad, at other times lyrical and truly soaring. There is pathos, passion and triumph here. Petri and Jarrett are two great players, but this kind of interplay does not happen in an afternoon. This recording is the fruit of some intense effort. The evidence: unlike many Bach readings, the phrasing is always intelligent, finely drawn. There is a subltle interplay between the rythms of these virtuoso players, like speed skaters that catapult each other along on the way, handing off rythm and speed in a decidedly cooperative, delicate and intimate manner. A highly dynamic reading of the Bach Sonatas. I highly recommend this CD to any and all listeners. If you don't know the Sonatas, this could be well be your best introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Michala Petri is superb.......2000-11-30

If you appreciate Bach or recorder music, this album is a must for you. Keith Jarrett and Michala Petri have put together a series of performances that sound so "right " that you cannot imagine them played otherwise.

The recorder playing, especially, is intriguing. Michala produces a sound similar to a flute, but a little darker and more mellow. Recorder, especially for Baroque music, is highly underrated. This is a great addition to any Baroque collection.

A superb technical effort combined with an interpretation that lets the spirit of the music shine through. All in all, I rate this CD in the top 5% of my collection.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty dull, very out of tune........2006-09-30

I have listened to this recordings several times now, and still have yet to see what particularly recommends it. I don't accept the proposal that See's lack of consistent intonation is a necessary (and salutary) byproduct of the baroque flute, as I have heard Hazelzet's recording, in which the intonation actually accords with the temperament of the harpsichord (Moroney and See are on different planets with respect to temperament).

I find the choices of tempi and articulation rather ho-hum and "historically informed pro forma." The tempo of the "slow movement" of the B-minor Sonata (which they play as if every sonata has to have a truly slow movement in order to be legitimate) yields a particularly-elephantine emphasis on every eighth note.

4 out of 5 stars Great playing!.......2006-09-04

This is great playing. It's not excellent playing. Janet always gives a wonderful sound. The ensemble is flawless. She chooses such perfect tempi.

But I wish she would ornament a little bit. It's all there....except for ornaments. Therefore, I give it four stars for my disagreement in (some of) her interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Bewitching.......2006-04-08

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750): Complete Flute Sonatas, Vol. 1: BWV 1034, 1035, 1032, 1030. Performed by Janet See, baroque transverse flute, Davitt Moroney, harpsichord, and Mary Springfels, viola da gamba.
Recorded in March, 1990, by Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, California.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally released on HMU 907024, now re-released as part of the budget-priced Classical Express series as HMCX 3957024. Total time: 56’24”.

Prior to purchasing this disc, I had listened to the same program as performed by Jed Wentz and Christiane Wuyts on Vanguard Classics, but the over-fast tempi and none-too-brilliant sound had deterred me from a closer acquaintance with this music. Janet See and Davitt Moroney, however, have changed all that: Their performance (with the able assistance of Mary Springfels on BWV 1034 and 1035) is absolutely first-class, fully meriting the rave review in the “Capital Times” quoted on the cover: “A wickedly charming set of flute sonatas … See’s wooden transverse flut has a deeper, richer and softer sound than the modern metal flute, but it’s really her bold phrasing and propulsive tempos which make this set such a winner.” Davitt Moroney, thorough musicologist that he is, provides ample notes covering the historical background, including the thorny questions of authenticity associated with most of Bach’s works for flute. The recorded sound is absolutely bewitching, so that listening in front of loudspeakers rather than over headphones is a must. All three musicians play as Bach surely intended: with grace and nobility, but also with fervour and a grand sense of the whole being more than its parts. Congratulations all round on this performance, also to the folk at Harmonia Mundi for making this available at an extremely affordable price!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Baroque Flute.......2006-01-09

Don't let the budget label and price fool you - these recordings are Bach at its best. The rich and lucious sound of Janet See's elegant flute tone immediately captivates your senses and is enhanced nicely by a perfectly-resonant recording ambiance (not too close, not too distant). Her Baroque transverse flute exudes a deeper, more "earthy" timbre compared to the brighter one of the modern flute and is most attractive and soothing to hear. Indeed, for this reason, many enjoy these pieces late at night. David Moroney is a world-renown harpsichordist who gives Ms. See an attractive and perfectly flowing background. Bach's flute sonatas have always been some of his more enchanting compositions and this duo brings out such wonderous depth with ever-so-smooth lyricism and poise. Represented on this disc are four of the six sonatas: E major, E minor, A major and the B minor (BWV 1034, 1035, 1032 and 1030 respectively). Volume II rounds out the six with some other works for solo flute. Another recommended set is by William Bennett (who uses a modern flute) on a budget re-issue.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2001-07-12

Beautifully performed and recorded. This addition to the series has an intimaote and soulful quality that any music lover would appreciate but those lovers of the more intimate forms of music such as Chamber will revel in this lovely compilation of music

    5 out of 5 stars A good performance, at a bargain price.......2007-07-16

Bach wrote his flute sonatas in the period 1717 to 1722 when in Cohen, and when the transverse flute was a relatively new instrument. These sonatas are not Bach's greatest works, but are pleasant and tuneful. I chose this version as I am familiar with the names of William Bennett and George Malcolm, all 6 sonatas are on the one CD, and it is a reissue at bargain price! I am not sure when the recording was made, tiny writing on the packaging suggests 1978, but that is a bit early for a DDD recording. The notes are clearly wrong with the date of the flute, again 1978, long after the maker died, 1878 would be likely.
So it is a modern flute used here, I would have prefered the gentler tone of a baroque flute, and the flute is a little dominant, which was the custom in the early 1980s, even though for the first 3 sonatas Bach clearly indicated that the harpsichord was an equal partner; however I did not find that a major problem. That aside, the performances are very good, clear and open, the music dances along nicely.
A rating; I would like to give it 4.5, but half stars are not allowed, so I will be a little generous and make it 5.

5 out of 5 stars William Bennett and George Malcolm in the Bach Flute Sonatas.......2006-01-01

    This evidently is a reissue.

I have Jean Pierre Rampal and Robert Veyron Lacroix performing the Bach Flute Sonatas on cassette, and wanted a CD recording of these lovely pieces. William Bennett and George Malcolm fit the bill. Theirs is a fine CD on several counts: expert, highly musical playing; all 6 Bach flute sonatas on one CD; clear sound; and budget price. William Bennett has a beautiful, liquid tone, and George Malcolm is a superb harpsichordist. Both musicians are balanced well, in a clear, up front acoustic, with Bennett seeming to be slightly forward, and Malcolm in a supportive role.William Bennett plays a modern flute. The give and take between Bennett and Malcolm is superb.

A most enjoyable disc, highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fournier.......2004-02-16

On this 4CD EMI Import, the great cellist Pierre Fournier performs a variety of orchestral and chamber recordings, recorded primarily in mono from the 1940s and early 50s. There are three orchestral works -- Haydn's 2nd Concerto (Kubelik/Philharmonia, 1951), Schumann's Concerto (Sargent/Philharmonia, 1956 in stereo), and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations (Bigot/Lamoureux, 1941). Disc two, and half of disc three, contain Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the great Artur Schnabel, while the fourth disc features a variety of pieces, from Bach and Boccherini to Debussy and Ravel, with pianist Gerald Moore. I'm withholding a fifth star because the collection contains mostly historical recordings, though it certainly captures one of history's greatest cellists in his prime. With that being said, "Les Introuvables de Pierre Fournier" is a must buy for cello entusiasts.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good.......2004-07-06

I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, specially the adagio........2004-01-28

I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07

Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).

So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.

2 out of 5 stars No So Great.......2003-10-29

Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.
