Truly Delightful.......2006-07-17

This is a perfect, relaxing, soothing and cheerful, unobtrusive music CD you can play in the background whether you're dining, working, studying or relaxing with a book.

A superb collection of Mozart's elegant music.......2005-01-26

Philips' "Set your Life to Music" series was designed for the average person who knows little about classical music but is interested to explore and enjoy it. For the average listener, the more soothing and elegant sounds of Mozart or Bach that this series features will be more appealing than the harsher tones and loudness of a Beethoven or modern symphony. This CD is a most lush collection of some of Mozart's finest music he composed for special festivities during the era of Dukes and Princes and Royal Courts (called "divertimenti"). So, the title "A Delightful Little Dinner Music" really is not far from the intent of the music Mozart wrote here - it was designed to be light, elegant and most of all to set a warm mood for the event. All pieces here are of a similar, non-invasive tone and temperament with no dramatic or loud sections that can disrupt special moments. The selections featuring the silky-smooth sounds of the oboe or clarinet are most delightful as Mozart had a special talent for writing for those highly-expressive instruments. Not a harsh note is heard on the entire CD.

But, don't misread the cute, contemporary art cover to mean substandard classical music. The quality of the performances, compilations and recordings are all surprizingly quite good. Even the "serious" classical listener should enjoy the variety of such compilations once in a while as hearing the fifteenth violin sonata in a row can start to become monotonous. Sometimes a little diversity is what is needed and the wonderful selections on this high-quality CD offers this. I have many CD's in this series and find this one my favorite. It is Mozart at his most elegant and wonderfully lyrical. It is music that never demands to be heard but only seeks to delight. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable, bright, sunny-morning-at-the-cafe selections.......1998-11-20

I like this CD so much, I'm buying it again so I can have a second copy for home. I'm a high school science teacher and I wanted an unobtrusive, but not bland, collection of Mozart to play in the background as my students worked. I found that this CD more than satisfied my meager demands by being invigorating without being overpowering, and varied enough so as to not get stale, even when on continuous play. My students have enjoyed it as well, quickly becoming comfortable with what, for most of them, was a new type of music, even asking me to play it if I forget to cue it up before class. I can't comment on the technical virtuosity of the performances, but they are certainly adequate, and the quality of the recording is very good. The music is presented in a menu style, with 'appetizers', 'main course', and 'dessert'. All in all, just the music for times when you need a pleasant, easily palatable, uplift for your day.

The subtitle of this compilation--"27 Tranquil Tracks from the Master of Baroque"--might suggest you're in for a dose of watered-down, Muzaked treatments, but not to worry: this is actually a very attractive theme album that makes an enticing introduction if you're just setting out to discover the wonder of J.S. Bach. Some of the most familiar music Bach wrote does indeed reside in the slow movements of his concertos, suites, and sonatas. Often, they reveal an Italianate love for spinning gorgeous melodies that sound eternally fresh and haunting in a number of contexts (witness the opening "Air on a G String" and its reworking in Procol Harum's hit, "A Whiter Shade of Pale"). Opera was the only genre of his time in which Bach didn't write, but many of his slower movements display the intense emotional focus of operatic arias, and Bach's range of expression can cover an infinite degree of moods--from "tranquility" to the deeply mournful adagio of Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. From its archives, the Erato label has culled interpretations by some of today's leading Bach interpreters, such as Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Jordi Savall, and Gustav Leonhardt.

The concept of "adagio" has been extended here to include chorales and slower passages from the great choral works, whereas some compilations offer only instrumental arrangements, thus overlooking this aspect so central to Bach's output. From the nearly two hours of music in this collection, you'll gain a pretty good overview of the stunning variety of genres that inspired Bach: the cantata, passion, concerto, solo instrumental suite, and many more (though a selection or two from the solo keyboard works would have been a nice inclusion). And, while Bach's slow movements are always integrated into a larger architecture, the gemlike beauty of these selections will likely inspire you to check out some of the full-scale works from which they've been excerpted. --Thomas May

Appropriate For Those Quiet Moments.......2004-03-02

Bach's Adagios is peaceful music that will soothe the soul. Each of the pieces have unique arrangements and emphasize different instruments. Some have a strong keyboard presence, others are more string driven, still others even feature a vocal choir. Some pieces are more captivating than others. Tracks 1 and 4 stand out on the first disc. The lead off track on the second disc is pretty memorable as well.

When I desire something more spirited, this two disc set has the potential to cause some boredom. But when peace and quiet is needed, this set is very appropriate.

This collection is a introduction to almost two hours of Bach's most seductive work during the Baroque period.

In the first CD, an almost ethereal quality embraces each piece, no matter the mood. You will feel peaceful, emotional, mournful and even filled with longing.

Qui tollis peccata mundi' from Mass in B Minor is magnificent. The church's influence on Bach's music is highly apparent and adds a spiritual dimension.

Andante from Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major is almost haunting and yet it almost embodies subtle joy or a feeling of anticipated happiness.

The second CD opens with Largo from Concerto for Keyboard and Strings in F minor and almost captures the feeling of spring. Perhaps the snow melting as you can almost hear drops of water falling softly onto the earth.

Prelude in C major follows with the vibrancy of new life or a stream meandering towards a river. Adagio from Violin Sonata No.5 in F minor always makes my heart beat just a little faster and reminds me of those first feelings of falling in love.

Sheep May Safely Graze from Cantata No. 208 is superior and almost translucent in quality and was almost as familiar as Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata No.147.

I really like this album. I bought it after watching Music of the Heart with Meryl Streep. I was looking for the cello solo her son plays in the movie. It is on this record, and it is exceptional - Suite for solo cello No. 1 in G major. Other notables are: Air on the G String, and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring.

A Dream Album.......2000-06-25

Almost 2 hours of "distilled" Bach- selections of the sweetest adagios by some of the world's best interpreters of the Baroque. Contains the most melodious extracts from the world's greatest masterpieces. The solos by flutist, Jean-Pierre Rampal have a dream-like quality of tonal purity: fitting preludes to choral motets by the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. The inclusion of Largos, Andantes and Preludes add well balanced variety to the more liesurely adagios.The selections provide a wonderfully peaceful background for reading or just relaxing.

This is one of the best classical music CD's set you can buy. Telemann's Tafelmusik and the wonderful group of players gathered to play it make a perfect match.

Cannot be less than 5.......2001-04-13

Telemann - a "light" word in most ears; to cap it, "Tafelmusik". What is this? A set of roccoco danses? NOT, friends, not at all. Telemann, the fertilest composer of all, made his best in his "Tafelmusik". The CD is lavish, thanks to the godlike Brüggen. An Ouverture in D, e.g., went on an eminent "career". In England, in the 20es of 1700, there was just a single subscriber of the Tafelmusik: the cunning Handel. In his best organ concerto, he made a one-to-one "transcription" from Telemann's work. In Belshazzar, also Telemann.

Not great variety.......2004-03-27

The information for this collection is not clear about composership. I thought I was getting a collection of adagios written by a *variety* of composers. Instead it is only:
- Albioni (1 CD)
- Bach (2 CDs)
- Beethoven (2 CDs)
Now, I really like these composers, but I thought this collection included more of a variety. So I'm disappointed in the CD set. The only place you can see for sure who the composers are is if you blow up the image of the cover you can see the composer list.

The music is fine....

Great Collection!.......2001-02-09

I loved this wonderful collection of relaxing and romantic pieces. It includes a wonderful rendering of Albinoni's famous adagio, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Great for listening to while working or just daydreaming!

Outstanding "Best of" Mozart collection for Home Listening.......2004-01-25

Ignore the title. This is an outstanding 3-CD "best of" Mozart collection with home listening in mind. The recordings and performances are superb. The selections are great.

Many classical music works were composed in a grand style for the concert hall and do not play well for everyday listening at home. Instead, composers wrote chamber music, pieces for small ensembles, and solo works for playing at home and at private quarters, like the kings' court. I much prefer these latter mentioned pieces for home or my "chamber." This is a collection of the best of Mozart with the home in mind.

An fine version, recorded in 1987, now budget-priced.......2006-11-21

This is the budget or mid-price reissue of a recording made in the Fall of 1987 and apparently released only in the first months of 1989. It is excellent, with good to remarkable tone production from all the players, at the service of a fine musical conception: brisk and strongly accented in the outer movements, very expansive in tempo in the sublime "Adagio" (2nd movement), in which Karl Leister's hushed pianissimos do marvels, and very contrasted in the theme and variations (4th movement). Among the versions recorded roughly at the same time, I find it better than Kremer and band on DG (Schubert: Octet), otherwise outstanding but marred by a plodding finale, the Academy of Saint-Martin-in-the-Fields (their second version on Chandos: Schubert: Octet in F major, D. 803), overly resonant in acoustics and a bit too expansive, or even the fine Chilingirian Quartet, on the British mid-price label EMI Eminence - apparently not listed on this website, but you can sometimes find it on its British sister company. By the way: by some mysterious and dumbfounding quirky workings of the all-embracing "system" that defies my understanding, this review of the Berliner Ensemble automatically gets published also under ASIN:B000003VKC, which is the Octet played by the Stamitz Ensemble. None of my pleas have succeeded in getting it fixed. So if you have clicked on this Stamitz Ensemble recording and are reading this review - don't trust it! I have NOT heard this particular recording and cannot comment upon it. Go to Franz Schubert: Octet in F Major, D.803 instead.
