Fantastic Album.......2007-03-16

This is a great album that I listen to over and over again. It really makes me feel... Sarah Chang is one of the greatest violin players and she has done a fabulous job on this album.

Easy listening Chang.......2006-03-09

This collection, consisting mostly of reissues, showcases Chang's expressive qualities, with the emphasis being mostly on the slow and dreamy side of her art. One has the feeling that the producers envisioned this disc as background music for a romantic candlelight dinner or some such, and for that purpose it is perfectly sufficient. Chang, of course, is a major violinist and none of the playing here is less than topnotch. As a musical experience for connoisseurs, however, "Sweet Sorrow" has its drawbacks, chief among them being the sameness of mood and tempo. Also, the inclusion of fragments of works such the Vieuxtemps Fifth Concerto and the Tchaikovsky Concerto is musically unsatisfying; the latter is particularly irritating as it leaves the end of the slow movement simply hanging. It may be of some significance that some of the most engaging playing from Chang is heard on the earliest tracks, the Chopin Nocturne and Liszt Consolation, recorded in her child prodigy days; here a genuine love for the music comes through that is somewhat muffled in most of the other selections.

total disappointment.......2005-08-14

In Chang's performance of the Vitali Chaconne, the feeling and passion initially apparent in her playing was wiped out by her
almost total lack of energy, expressed in a thin sound that often
made it difficult to distinguish the solo violin from the orchestra strings. By the second quarter of the piece, I was shocked to find the sound of her violin fading out in mid melody. It was so terrible, so embarrassing, I had to stop listening.

I think a much better interpretation of the Vitali is the one by Oistrakh, but sadly it is with piano accompaniment while Chang's is with orchestra - one that performs superbly... So that the aesthetic crime that is Chang's anemic, thin playing is doubly terrible.

some ways to go in knowing sorrow..........2004-09-04

Sarah Chang is no doubt technically brilliant on her instrument, however, her playing lacks depth and consistency of style. In the piano piece by Lizt re-arranged for violin for example, she has great difficulties in transitions and is therefore subdued in her musicality. The orchestral interpretation/edition of Saint Saens piece on this album is awful. Similar recordings by Anne Sophie Mutter or Midori Goto show greater maturity and are much more pleasing to the ear.

emotionally riveting vitali.......2004-01-13

The Vitali is worth the price of the cd. The rest is also very good - although obviously all very similar pieces. HOWEVER, this rendition of the Vitali with full orchestra (which is hard to find) is emotionally riveting. I usually stop the cd at that point because it's hard to listen to anything else immediately after that. Kind of like Jacqueline DuPre's Elgar - you need quiet after it to return yourself to everyday life.

Best collection of violin playing ever made.......2007-04-12

I am a professional violinist and have long been an admirer of Michael Rabin. His technic is beyond concern. I am familiar with people involved in these recordings. Amazingly, many were single, unedited takes. If you ever buy a violin recording, these are the ones to get.

...this collection is an absolute necessity to anyone enjoys violin music and a near necessity to anyone who enjoys classical music...what astounds me is the quality of many of the recordings...more often than not violin recordings seem to produce a sound that leaves the impression that you're listening from the back row in a large hall...most of Rabin's recordings, on the other hand, give the impression either he's right in the room with you or else you're in the front row at the concert.

Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very special about these recordings by Michael Rabin. His interpretations and the gusto of his playing take your breath away.

I cannot imagine any collection of classical music without this set of CDs.

I have to second Scott68. Rabin was one incredible violinist. I agree, the Paganini Caprices (age 15!) Wieniawski and others were never topped by anyone! This set is guaranteed to drop your jaw.

A Fitting Tribute To The 20th Century's Greatest Violinist.......2006-04-01

If you don't have these CD's get them, you won't be disappointed, especially if you love the violin as I do. If you're a Rabin fan too then this small investment is money well spent. A better set of recordings of violin classics couldn't be found anywhere. Rabin quite simply was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, rivalling, and in some ways surpassing the venerable Heifetz. He was also known for his phenomenal virtuosity and 'voluptuos' tone somewhat reminiscent of Perlman.

This boxed set includes many of the virtuoso pieces that made him famous as well as more reflective pieces like Bach. Listen to these and judge for yourselves what a truly great violinist was Rabin.

This CD presents six new recordings of Mario Davidovsky compositions spanning a period of nearly thirty-five years, performed by some of his leading champions. Featured are three of DavidovskyÂ’s Â“SynchronismsÂ” pieces for instruments and electronic sounds. This series of path-breaking works (including the Pulitzer Prize-winning No. 6 for piano and electronics) incorporates some of the Argentine-born DavidovskyÂ’s best known compositions. The Synchronisms series presents the listener with brilliantly imagined Â‘sonic-spacesÂ’ that combine extreme instrumental virtuosity with an accompanying pre-recorded track that utilizes both electronic and concrete sounds. The music that Davidovsky offers is notable for its highly musical interweaving of materials from radically differing sound sources. In addition to the Synchronisms pieces, three chamber works round out this collection. Duo Capriccioso, heard in its first recording, is a whimsical dialogue between violin and piano. Quartetto contrasts delicate unison writing with ferociously biting tuttis; and Chacona is a granitic masterpiece of heroic virtuosity. CD annotator Eric Chasalow writes that Â“Davidovsky was already a composer of great accomplishment when Aaron Copland brought him from Argentina to Tanglewood in 1959. There, Milton Babbitt recognized the young composerÂ’s potential and made the crucial suggestion that he travel to New York City.Â” Davidovsky eventually became director of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, where he came into contact with Edgard Varèse and many other leading musicians of the day. I haven't heard this CD but I saw the Trosters perform and they are superb. I also have two other CD's of theirs and they are superb. If the French reviewer had given more technical critique he might be more credible, but the words he uses in his review make it appear that he downs the Trosters just because they are Germans. Furthermore, Nathan Milstein is a violinist, and violin can't be compared to mandolin and guitar.

Where is style ?.......2001-12-08

I love Nathan Milstein. He plays very well italian music, and he wasn't italian.
Troester are german and play with a poor sound and whithout sweetness, like fat germans loving beer.

nap time.......2005-05-01

Most of Scarlatti's 555 keyboard sonatas are fast and inventive, with scarcely a dud among them. The ones played here, however, are from a soft spot in the manuscripts in which Scarlatti pads the good stuff with a series of atypical suites. They are awful! Yes, I'm reviewing Scarlatti here, but although I have never before heard this particular combo of chitarra and mandolin, I have to give this performance a thumbs-down. There are many great performances on guitar out there, but I can't recommend this version.

Glorious performances.......2004-02-10

This is a wonderful album. The two Troesters play with technical brilliance, but the technique is so good it sounds like they could play in their sleep. What comes across is their superb communication with each other and their feeling for the music. The guitar is a perfect support for the virtuoso mandolin. I don't know of another performance of Scarlatti I like so well. A short rant : recording techniques make technically perfect performances possible, but technical perfection on this disc, although arguably present, takes a back seat to the sound of real people playing together.
