No 20th-century work has so successfully embodied an atmosphere of timeless spirituality as Duruflé's Requiem has. It inhabits a sonic world far removed from any specific place in the musical ages--its contemporary harmonic aura is tempered with ancient chant melodies and modes that effectively suspend the work in an accessible yet ethereal space. In the light of this unique context, the revered Latin texts receive a renewed vitality and meaning. In contrast, Fauré's setting is far more traditional, but in this greater conventionality can be found an uplifting and reassuring beauty that brings us to that same point of peaceful comfort at music's end. Of course, the Sanctus is among the most sublime creations in the choral repertoire, and the Pie Jesu is one of the most beloved and frequently sung movements of any piece of church music. This recording of the Fauré uses the 1893 version edited by John Rutter. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

4 out of 5 stars MarMSED.......2005-08-27

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

The chorus is at center of Shaw's reading of the score, presumably the more lightly scored 1893 version that Fauré, himself created (Telarc does not specify). The account flows very well, and the work of both soloists is highly satisfying, particularly Judith Blegen's airy soprano in Pie Jesu. The recording dates from 1985-86 and is one of Telarc's best, with excellent presence overall and real bass in the organ. --Ted Libbey

A very professional performance.I used it to prepare for the performance of this number by our oratorial society. I wish we could do as well.

3 out of 5 stars The Faure is Great, Not so Much the Durufle.......2006-02-16

The Faure Requiem (Op. 48) in D minor is a soft, gentle requiem unlike the powerful Verdi, Berlioz, and Durufle. The delicate qualities of this requiem are captured beautifully on this recording.

The Durufle Requiem (Op. 9) is one of my most favorite compositions of all time and it is not performed well on this disc for one reason: the solos are sung by the choir and that is not what I want to hear when I want to hear Durufle's requiem. Piquemal's version is still my favorite and I recommend that over this one.

5 out of 5 stars French Choral Classics.......2005-11-30

This disk has set the standard for performing the settings of the Requiem mass by two great French masters, Gabriel Faure and Maurice Durufle. The Faure setting is an intimate one with occasional moments of tempestuousness. This particular recording features the more heavily orchestrated edition (for an excellent chamber version see the Cambridge Singers under John Rutter). Put in seven parts, additional features include two baritone solos and a lovely soprano solo. The choral parts are not difficult, but require a delicate touch with great articulation, all provided here. The harmonies gently shift with occasional color changes and chromatic mediant relationships. The concluding movement (In Paradisum) sums up the experience with a satisfying contemplative moment devoid of bombasticity. A masterwork not to be missed.

The Durufle Requiem is a horse of a different color. The rhythms and harmonies are not so classically straight-forward like the Faure; far from it. Not only do the rhythms constantly shift, the melodies aren't classically structured, but instead, quote and are reminiscent of chant, making the rhythmic changes seem natural. The harmonic setting is heavily steeped in church modes, but Durufle's lush orchestrations make this anything but old-fashioned. Much more thickly textured, Durufle doesn't fear to leap into occasional revelry and joyousness; Durufle has a knack for timing his climaxes just right, more moments of exuberance than Faure exhibited. This edition is the fully orchestrated version, and while there is a nice organ accompaniment edition, I much prefer the grandeur of the orchestra. Robert Shaw chooses not to have soloists, but instead have the choir parts sing the solos. This version is still highly exciting and lacks nowhere (unless you want soloists). You might want to choose to have an all Durufle choral CD (Michael Plasson in EMI classics is a good choice), but this pairing of two classics is an equally fine program.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have not put out such a successful CD as in this 1987 digital Telarc classic. The sound is full and virile, the heightened sense of drama is apparent and can't be beat by any other recording, certainly not by another American choir. Nearly two decades after its release, this still remains the standard.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for amost every review, what does that tell you?.......2005-10-01

I'm not going to tell you about the phenominal audio quality of this CD ($300 head phones work best) or the culmination of the incredible artistic performance of the late Robert Shaw (master extraordinaire). However, I will mention that if you are looking for deep soul searching composition's who's performances faithfully match the composers ideal interpretation of their vision of the here-after, this is your recording.

Faure & Durufle being the earliest predicessors of todays contemorary music, lay a foundation of perfection that few composers can build upon, and even fewer can surpass. Don't buy the latest recorded version of these Requiems, buy Robert Shaw's version. I guarantee you won't want another. Gary Dissette-Denver Colorado

3 out of 5 stars Rum-Rum.......2007-03-14

Any review of this recording that fails to mention the distracting background noise makes one wonder how closely the reviewer was listening. Throughout the Duruflé Requiem, there is a consistent noise that sounds like a needle stuck in a grove at the end of an old LP: "rum-rum, rum-rum, rum-rum..." While it is possible one might not hear it played back through speakers, it is impossible to miss through headphones.

As to the performance, I prefer the austere sound of the organ against the ethereal sounds of the chorus. My only reservation lies with the boy tremble, whose vocal output is unsteady, almost nervous sounding, as though he were being forced to sing. I don't think an idea performance with organ accompaniment exists, but this performance comes as close as any I have heard.

4 out of 5 stars Rumble rumble.......2006-10-15

I just got this CD a few weeks ago because I wanted both the Faure and the Durufle. I'm not going to pick on anybody for supposed intonation problems (I listen to Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams regularly) or anything else. I really like the recordings of every piece I've heard on this CD set.

But has anybody else noticed some pretty major traffic noises during the Durufle Quatre Motets, specificall track 11? It sounds like they recorded next to a race track.

Outside of that, I think this set is a worthwhile investment.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime versions and top class recordings........2006-09-03

This version of Durufle's Requiem is just mesmerizing, I have the Telarc, which is great... until you listen to this one.
Sound quality is top notch too for a seventies recording.

2 out of 5 stars Deceptive Durufle.......2003-11-27

If one were to listen solely to the Faure Requiem and some of the other choral works on this 2 CD compilation, this would be a decent recording of great French choral music. However, as someone looking for a good recording of the Durufle, I was highly disappointed. Not only is the recording simply an organ reduction of full score, but the quality of singing was below what one would expect to find on a CD from a major label. Marked by under-developed techniques and inconsistencies in pitch, the recording is good if you need to learn the work in a hurry, but little else. If you're in the market for a Faure recording, this will do the job and you can preview the Durufle, but look elsewhere for a serious recording of such a rich work.

5 out of 5 stars Duruflés Requiem and original intentions........2003-02-02

Both Duruflé and Fauré wrote their Requiems for choir and organ first. The orchestrations were afterthoughts bending to the excesses of public appeal and publishers demands. Both works can be wonderful with orchestra and on this CD you will find, as usual with St. Martin in the Fields, a beautiful recording of the Fauré Requem with orchestra. However, on this CD you will find the Duruflé Requiem in the original choir and organ only version, and this, in my opinion, is not only the preferable way to listen to the work - in it's original casting, but this performance is the best around with a most lush and complex tone from the trebles in the boy choir.

Once described as a "lullaby of death," Gabriel Fauré's Requiem is a work of supreme composure that seems to illustrate the gentlest of goings into that good night. This recording bucks the current trend favoring the composer's original version for reduced chamber orchestra, offering the fully orchestrated edition from 1899. The result gives a solid, spacious context for Fauré's modal lyricism, his interplay of light and shadow, to unfold. Conductor Myun-Whung Chung at times even suggests a dark undertow of despair, as in the funereal plunge and tread of the Introit, yet he is also keenly sensitive to the agnostic composer's essentially sensuous textures (listen to the dark amber interweaving of inner string lines in the Offertorium), thereby escaping the potential sentimentality that sometimes pits Fauré's vision unfavorably against the robust fire and fury of Verdi's Requiem. In this regard, Chung's choice of soloists is ideal. Cecilia Bartoli's rendition of the Pie Jesu will stop you in your tracks (simply one of the most achingly beautiful examples of her artistry), while Bryn Terfel uses the rich resonance of his baritone to powerful effect. Maurice Duruflé's Fauré-inspired Requiem, offered as the coupling, is likewise given in its fully orchestrated version. The patient serenity of its culminating In Paradisum seems to offer a harmony of the spheres for our age of anxiety. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars A Refreshingly Elegant Performing Stance on Two Important Requiems.......2005-10-10

While not everyone will give this magnificent recording the chance it deserves because it may seem irreverent to praise full-bodied performances of two delicate French masterpieces, those who truly love both the Fauré and Duruflé Requiems will find much to love here. Myung-Whun Chung has opted to record the full orchestra/full mixed chorus versions of these two works usually heard in the pared-down versions for church settings, and in doing so he unveils even more mysteries than one would think possible. Chung knows the French repertoire well, having been associated with French Opera in France for many seasons. And here he draws upon the Chorus and Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia as well as the full-bodied, intelligent and sensitive voices of singers Bryn Terfel and Cecilia Bartoli as his soloists.

The result: dreamily romantic reading of these beautiful scores. Though Bartoli is a mezzo-soprano in name, her range is so vast that she offers the most genuinely spiritual 'Pie Jesu' in the Fauré in this listener's history. The same can be said for Terfel's involved singing. Often these solos are given to minor singers and it is a thrill to hear them from the gifted voices of two of today's finest recitalists. Chung draws gorgeous sounds from his gathered ensemble and produces the warmest, romantic performances these two Requiems are likely to enjoy.

Different interpretations, yes, but still very much in the core of both composers' concepts. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

4 out of 5 stars A revisit because more stars need to show.......2001-04-28

In revisiting this fine effort conducted by Chung, I just wanted to add that unlike what my fellow reviewer hears, Terfel gives me the notion of Jacques Jansen, a rich, vibrant, demonstrative French baritone of old who sang the Faure many times. His Arkel set the standard for Debussyan chanson, too, and in considering that, this Terfel performance seems well within the French tradition and not Puccinian verismo at all.

After all the nasty things I've written about Chung, I'll stick to giving him his due here for outstanding work. The Santa Cecilia forces have historically rejected anyone resembling a hack, and in accepting Chung, they give him their considerable all here.

Reassign four stars on a rehearing...as blessed relief for all the precious British little boychoir performances we're saddled with in these powerful works.

1 out of 5 stars High-Powered Faure. Bad Idea........2000-06-16

This is Faure with star power, and the result is painful, to my ears anyway. Faure is many things: subtle, elegant, graceful, melodic, and haunting, all about in equal measure. This recording is too seldom any of those things for very long. The major problem is the two big "show-stopper" numbers, the "Pie Jesu" for Bartoli and the "Libera me" for Terfel. Faure certainly didn't intend these lovely pieces as show-stoppers, but that is what we get here. Bartoli's solo is beautiful in a show-offy self conscious sort of way. She has a great voice certainly, but this music would be better suited to a more restrained performance. But one could learn to live with her interpretation, I suppose. The real problem is Terfel, who belts out "Libera me" as though he were leaning into a Puccini solo in full force. It is very hard to describe just how monumentally wrong-headed his approach is--the proverbial bull in a china shop. For those of you familiar with Faure, you may want to hear Terfel's performance once for its shock value, but this Requiem is most likely not going to appeal to you for very long, unless, of course, you are a fan of the Ethel Merman approach to this repertoire. For those of you unfamiliar with this work, there are literally dozens of more attractive recordings of this work. My favourite is the Montreal/Dutoit version that generously includes the lovely Pavanne as well as the Pelleas and Melisande suite.

4 out of 5 stars Chung finally lives up to his billing.......1999-11-09

You can reasonably expect Bartoli and Terfel to be fine artists, especially if they are well-supervised. I cringed when I first saw this one in that I expected Chung to beat prissily away as he usually does, but the sneaking suspicion that he'd actually think a recording project through caused me to go for it.

And I'm glad I did. Bartoli's presence inspires him and Terfel to come way up to her considerable international standard. As for the Santa Cecilia Orchestra...well...it would play well even for YOU...or sometimes even WITHOUT you. To go along with this, the Santa Cecilia Chorus outdoes itself in ardor, mimicry, and close attention to the text, absolutely one of the finest choirs in the world.

The Faure has some darker corners than what we're used to and gives Chung an opportunity to think and produce an effect for once. His Durufle is on the same level, full of contrast without being jerked around, luminous and fulfilling.

All told, this turns out to be Chung's best recorded effort and is an excellent accomplishment for him...although I suspect the superior standard of his Rome forces contributes greatly to this (when he gets back to Paris are we back to routine?) The sound is also lovely, a warm, silky presentation of what's obviously an outstanding venue for recording projects such as this.

In going out the door, I'll express one caveat...these are French works and nothing is particularly Gallic about the performances...but in the divine scheme of things, this might be seen as going way beyond national idiom.

This sampler, which appeared in 1997, features Robert Shaw, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and its associated choruses in selections from some of the choral-orchestral blockbusters they recorded for Telarc between 1979 and 1993, in consistently excellent sound. Shaw's unrivalled mastery of this repertory shines through in every selection on the disc, not least in the excerpts that frame the program: the final pages of the "Prologue in Heaven" from Boito's Mefistofele, and the towering conclusion of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, both magnificently done. Just one warning: after listening to this, you're likely to find yourself hurrying back to buy the recordings of the complete works. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars One Who Loved Sir Robert; eager to see him again .......2006-06-30

If anyone goes back into that memory of nostalgia...It is easy to create good reminders of seeing, hearing and singing with Sir Robert Conducting JS Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart, Poulenc, Schubert and Vivaldi!

When anyone hears once again Donna Carter, Edith Wiens, Judith Blegen, Susan Dunn, Christine Brewer, Dawn Upshaw and William Stone it is a totally unforgetable Moment! Upon more keenly intense listening I found similarities in the voices of Edith Wiens...Judith Blegen and Donna Carter. In fact, I can exchange the songs of Donna, Edith and Judith without being sure of which is the right soprano. That is almost equal to the voice of Susan Dunn! The last two Sopranos, Christine Brewer and Dawn Upshaw are different qualities with a bit more variety of color and depth! Shaw had a masterful taste in choosing the right soprano for each demand and challenge!

When one dwells upon Shaw Favorites with CD's of "Deep River & other SPIRITUALS, Christmas with Robert Shaw, surely, CHORAL MASTERPIECES and Johannes Brahms GERMAN REQUIEM...what else is THERE?

No other Choral Inflence has been seen greater than upon Donald Neuen, Craig Jessop or Norman MacKenzie! SING-Cerely, "Revi" Fred W Hood

5 out of 5 stars I may be musically challanged but...........2002-10-23

This is one of those recordings that would have a hole worn in it from overuse if CD's were capable of getting holes from being used. This is the most used CD in my entire collection. I love it! It picks me up when I am down and it quiets me when I am high. It send shivers down my spine and sets my heart pounding. In short, it does everything a good CD is supposed to do. I don't want to listen to an hour of the same piece. I am entirely content listening to the highlights. As I said before, I may be musically challanged, but this CD is my favorite.

3 out of 5 stars Good selection of pieces, uniformly flat performances.......2000-07-27

This is a collection of choral selection from previous Telarc recordings featuring the Robert Shaw Chorale and the Atlanta Symphony. Recording dates range from 1979 to 1993.

It's a great cross-sampling of (mostly) Romantic-era choral pieces, the choral singing is as usual impeccable, and it's a great group of soloists.

As these excerpts are from some of my very favorite pieces of music, I kept wondering why I wasn't more enthusiastic about this compilation.

Part of the problem is hearing the music in excerpts (a movement here, an aria there) is pretty frustrating. Entering smack in the middle of the last movement of Mahler 8, it can take you a while to get your musical bearings.

I'm also not wild about most of the interpretations, many of which struck me as kind of flat and uninspired (the Verdi Requiem and the Mahler 8 stick out in my mind). Suffice to say I didn't learn anything new about any of the pieces on the album, and in every case there is a recording of the work I like much better. (Except the Cavalleria rusticana excerpt, which I really liked, go figure.)

Bottom line: if you're not familiar with these works, and want a good (and very well-performed) cross-section of Romantic choral pieces, give it a listen. But then do yourself a favor and buy complete and more inspired versions of the pieces you really like.

3 out of 5 stars Standard Shaw.......2000-05-29

Like all of Shaw's recordings, this one is once again up to standards. A great assortment of selections from the religous works of many artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation, excellent remastering, and a DG label.......2006-04-24

There is always the mentality where the best will always be the best. Whenever you see an unknown artist on Deustche Grammophon, you'll probably be like, "Wow, he's not bad. It's Deustche Grammophon...means that the sound is great too". Anyway, the bottom line is, this cd is really good. The music is very relaxing, some are a mixture of choral and ochestral, providing a decent enough variety. Nowadays, I usually buy newer cds for remastered sound. Turns out that this is one of the better ones. Overall speaking, this cd is great for everyone, not just classical conoisseurs. Highly Recommended

Amazon.com

This is the second installment in a recording project originally inspired by Pope John Paul II's visit to Paris in 1997 to celebrate the Worldwide Days of Youth. A surprisingly effective anthology of mostly sacred liturgical music, the selections here occasionally give the impression of "bleeding chunks" (as in the majestic opener from one of Monteverdi's sublimest creations, the 1610 Vespers) but have been chosen with imagination. Chung coordinates his forces in larger choral pieces with power and vertical balance, making a standout of the Beethovenian mystery and drive apparent in the "Sanctus" from Schubert's Mass in E-flat. Contributions by Cecilia Bartoli find the mezzo in top form--listen to her finely spun line interweave with the oboe d'amore in a selection from Bach's B Minor Mass--and as evocative as bright stained glass in Fauré's "Pie Jesu." Bryn Terfel brings charismatic presence to his one selection here (also from the Fauré Requiem). Also included are the interminable "Song for Athene" by John Taverner and a sentimental but earnest performance by Andrea Bocelli in Eric Levi's hymn for the world, "I Believe." --Thomas May

2 out of 5 stars Just regular.......2004-11-18

I am giving only 2 stars to this CD because, though featuring really "famous" names such as Bartoli and Terfel, the overall sound is not as good as one expects it to be, maybe due to sound technicians, I could not say.
But what I think it's WORST about this album, is the Laudate Dominum (from Visperae de Confessore, by Mozart) performance by the Santa Cecilia Academy Choir. Being a choir alt singer myself and having sang the piece a few times, it pierces my ears to hear the altos out of tune IN THE FIRST LINE OF THE CHOIR SCORE!!!! How could the recording company put this in the market? Did nobody in the recording notice it? And the choir conductor? I would be ashamed of having a recording of my choir out of tune.

4 out of 5 stars Uniformly good, except for one rather nasty exception.......2003-11-05

This collection (Also released as "Voices from Heaven", I believe) provides a nice retrospective of 400 years of sacred music. The choir is strong overall, and Bartoli and Bocelli (in his one song) prove admirable soloists, especially in the "Pie Jesu".

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Terfel, and for the "Libera Me" in general. What was the purpose of Faure carefully cutting most of the Dies Irae and hellfire passages if the singers attempt to put it all back in in an overdramatic rendition?

5 out of 5 stars Knocked My Socks Off!.......2002-10-11

As a choral singer, I am familiar with most of these works, but this recording knocked my socks off when I heard excerpts from it on a local classical music radio station. Not only does this CD group together some of the best music anywhere, but the performances are fantastic. The choral group has a remarkable precision and clarity in their sound that is admirable. And wonderful soloists. In summary, you might have heard many of these pieces elsewhere, but the impact of having these great performances all on one CD is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Worth One Song.......2001-09-03

This CD is worth having JUST for "I Believe" sung by Andrea Bocelli. Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars ATTENTION, FANS: NEW BOCELLI CD RELEASE IN OCTOBER.......2001-06-16

I'm not actually "reviewing" this album. Andrea's got a new CD debuting in October. Watch out for it. The end.

Both part of my old LP collection, these gems are now replaced by very fine recordings. Hampson & Bonney are favorites already, and Larmore is becoming one.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performance!!!.......2001-09-09

Although the Duruflé Requiem Mass (written after WW-II) is modelled formally on the Fauré Requiem (written 50 years earlier), the two works are very different. Fauré's work is a gentle, late Romantic piece, whereas Duruflé's, sounding every bit as French as Fauré's, displays modernist elements. It is more agitated than Fauré's untroubled work and more accurately exemplifies the feelings associated with death. Legrand clearly has great affection for the later piece and it actually comes off as the greater piece of music.

Legrand, known for his work as a jazz pianist and popular songwriter, is actually a very sensitive conductor and he clearly has a keen understanding of French music and the way these works should be performed. He recognizes that the solemn occasion for which these works were written demands that the tempi not be too brisk, lest the feeling of solemnity be forgotten. Anything faster than his tempi on this record would sound inappropriately rushed.

The soloists are excellent. Thomas Hampson's unerring sense of style is well suited to French music and he sings with admirable poise and conviction. One of the most telling differences between these two works is the "Pie Jesu" movement. Fauré wrote it for a soprano soloist. The writing is relatively light and Barbara Bonney copes well with its high tessitura. Duruflé clearly liked the idea of writing this movement for a female soloist, but, perhaps wishing to probe deeper spiritually than Fauré, Duruflé wrote a much darker, more serious, and, in fact, much more meaningful movement, for a mezzo-soprano soloist. Jennifer Larmore sings it absolutely perfectly and Legrand's accompaniment, especially in the rapturous pianissimi of the opening and closing of the movement, is likewise perfectly sympathetic. The orchestral playing from the Philharmonia Orchestra, as in every other respect on this record, is excellent in the climax of this movement. It is very, very difficult to imagine this unspeakably beautiful and moving "Pie Jesu" being performed any better than on this disc. It certainly confirms that Jennifer Larmore is one of the great and certainly one of the most intelligent mezzos on record. Indeed, this whole recording, including the choral singing and the warm quality of the recording itself, is characterized by excellence. This truly sublime music deserves no less.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed generally.......2001-01-27

I was looking for a full-bodied mature reading of this beautiful piece. I was leery of Hampson's sophisticated but often undersized vocalism, but hearing the Pie Jesu was a good woman soprano (not a boy treble) and that the chorus sounded rich, I decided to try this recording.

The problem with the recording is not Hampson's. He sounds fine. The conductor Legrand chose ridiculously slow tempi, such that some of the climatic moments felt like they were in molasses. Also, there were intonation problems throughout, especially the chorus.

So while there is promise in the various performances, I am terribly disappointed and frustrated by the overall result.

5 out of 5 stars A correction to Amazon's list of performers.......2007-06-19

In Amazon's description of the CD, they list the backup musicians as though they were primary, and make no mention of most of the actual choir members. Connor Burrowes sings the solos, backed up by his younger brother Edward, Simon Acott, Tim Burtt, Gerald Beatty, Matthew Davies, and Edward Pattenden. Critics have acclaimed Connor Burrowes as possibly the best treble soloist in recording history. As of 2007, he is still at university studying music, and has developed an excellent tenor voice.

5 out of 5 stars Pure as crystal.......2004-12-15

Conner Burrows is now choir master for the prestigious Boys Air Choir, made up of eight top treble choristers from St. Paul's, Salisbury and Westminster Cathedrals. This choir was formed to be "the best quality boy's choir in the world". Conner is the feature soloist on this album recorded while he was a member of this choir and still had his pure treble voice. His has been called "the greatest treble voice in this century" by critics in Japan and his native England. Quoting from the fold-out in the album "Like crystal, shining in the sun, like tears falling from your eyes - the voice of this boy will make you believe that life is forever". His "Pie Jesu" - tracts number 2 and 7 are all this and more. If you love treble voices, you will love this album. And yes, it's okay to cry when you hear him.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Heaven..........2004-01-30

Although released as a Boys Air Choir recording, this is rather misleading as Connor Burrows actually sings solo on this excellent choral offering.
Connor, a former chorister from St.Paul's Cathedral as were his younger singing siblings Edward and Patrick, was I feel in many way sadly overlooked as a suberb treble, by the deserving success of his fellow chorister at the time Anthony way.
Connor Burrows sharper, and perhaps slightly more powerful tones in evidence on this solo album, are well suited to the tracks chosen for this recording.
He sings Faure's Sanctus beautifully, to match any other version of it I've so far heard, and the scales he reaches in Lacrimosa have to be heard to be believed!
He's less well suited to singing the more gentle carols, Away In a Manger and In The Bleak Mid Winter, but overall a pleasing CD with a treble voice at its peak.

5 out of 5 stars The voices of angels.......2003-08-23

I feel so sad because I can't find the Boys air choir's CDs in China. But I bought them when I saw them on Amazon by friend's help.Oh,their voices are so beautiful! In fact,5 stars is really really not enough for their CDs!And there is a question I really need your help:Why don't you have their 3-CD box set named "Angel's Music Box"(It's really a beautiful box set!) or their 3rd album "Air"? I trust Amazon could get them!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, just not exactly what I was looking for........2003-05-08

This CD highlights one boys voice mostly. He has an angelic voice and is very talented, but if you didn't know it was a boy singing, you might think it was a girl or even an adult.

I was hoping this CD would have more of a boyhood quality to it. Meaning, the singing would have lots of treble, but also an unmistakable boy sound. I was also hoping that I would hear more of the rest of the choir, rather than just the one boy.

It is a very peaceful CD though, and I do not regret buying it.

Make it your manifest destiny to own this compilation of music. These scores are given to us by the world's most gifted composers. Performing are "heavenly" choirs and instrumentalists demonstrating true virtuosity. Large choirs perform with such intonation qualities! There appears to be just one voice in each section. Your heart will pound when you are lifted so high you realize that you have stopped breathing; likewise, with the sudden timbre of the minor you allow yourself to remember tears. The emotional roller-coaster ride will affect your inner being. It is appropriately subtitled: Classical Music for Reflection and Meditation. It is a true gift to hear the genius of Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Faure, and others, performed so well.
