Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping. --Andrew Bartlett

I purchased this CD in conjunction with another CD with lullabies for a friend who had just had a baby. She said the music is fine but it's got an audio portion that is totally useless for her. She said she's not been able to get the CD to play just the music w/out the video portion.

It's a wonderful compilation of world lullabies. It's good all over the world - doesn't matter if your baby is from Mars or Paris, Amazon or New York, it definitely works!

If you only get one lullabye cd, this should be it.......2007-01-04

We have over a dozen lullabye cds, and this is the only one we have worn out from constant use, and are replacing for baby #2. My daughter got hooked from the first track, Chi Mi Na Mór-Bheanna. As soon as it would come on, she would calm down and focus, and the other tracks would lull her to sleep. When we made the mistake of forgetting it at home on a road trip, I had to sing it to get her to stop crying (still learning the gaelic words to that!). It is a brilliant, well-compiled, album of tracks you won't find elsewhere (and which won't bore you, the parent). I have given it over and over as a baby present; it is tried and true. An earlier reviewer commented that the tracks were jarring; we don't find them to be, but then again, we don't like "new age" music (i.e., Wyndam Hill) because we find it too monotonous, so it is a question of musical tastes. Just an added note: the version featured of the classic French lullabye featured, Fais do-do, is truly lovely.

I am native spanish and this CD is the closest to the music I've had when I was little. Music is soft with no annoying voices. My 4 month old baby loves it already. Many of the songs are fun to dance with and in others you can signal with your hands while singing. Highly recommended.

Great CD and fun to listen too for parents...and baby!.......2006-12-23

We have a 10 month old and we can only speak English to her. To introduce her to the Spanish language we got this CD of music and the whole family loves it, including the little one. We all love dancing around the living room while its playing. Its also has 5 or 6 spoken parts to expose the baby to the spoken word. Also, its been a great CD to put her to sleep with because to songs are so soft an pleasing. You can't go wrong with this one!

Excellent sound quality, diversity of voices/songs.......2006-05-27

As a non-native Spanish speaker trying to expose our daughter to as much Spanish as possible (my husband only speaks English to her), this is a perfect CD with easily understood (i.e. not too fast, nor too many voices singing at once) and fun music in Spanish. The music quality is great and diversity of people singing (women, men, children) is broader than other CD's I've heard. Also, there are quite a few tracks!

It can be hard to find children's music in Spanish that parents can also enjoy, but this is it. These performers sing well and have put together some delightful arrangments of old standards as well as some new songs. My Spanish-speaking kids (ages 4 and 1) love it and always get up to dance during their favorites.

It probably is my taste, but I got the CD based on what someone else said, and the person and I must have far different tastes. I thought she was mediocre at best. Not the fault of Amazon, of course. My fault.

Great music...beautiful singer with a so-so voice.......2006-07-19

Unfortunately, Arielle Dombasle doesn't quite have the voice to pull this off. I like her selection of songs, and her accompaniment is exquisite. She even does a good job some of the time. It's those other times, when she's flat, that really detract from your listening pleasure. The good moments outnumber the bad, or I would pan her altogether.

"Rhum and Coca-Cola" and "Whispering" are my two winners for this album. The vocals needed to be honed (or fixed with "studio magic") before some of these were released to the public. I got the feeling that Dombasle was trying to channel Edith Piaf at times, but she's no Edith Piaf.

Not bad... More Traditional.......2007-06-12

This wasn't quite what I expected when I bought it. Labeled "The Greatest Songs Ever" I suppose I was expecting some great, contemporary songs. This CD encapsulates a very traditional side of France and the tempo is quite slow. Just be sure you listen to it first to know what you're getting into.

This cd is great! There are so many emotions conveyed through music that there is always a track to fit your mood. My favorite song is El Picket Sign. It has a great rhythm and references to Juarez and Zapata make me wish I wasn't such an Anglo!

A must have CD.............2005-10-24

For every mexican, chicano, hispanic,latino who grew up in the movement. Im very proud of this cd, my father did all the percussion on track #13. Kudos to the Smithsonian for regocnizing the beautiful and moving music of the chicano movement & for putting out this cd, which will now be in the archives for all generations. My fave tracks are #13 of course, 17,8,14, but the whole cd is good.

Everyday People.......2005-10-07

What can we revolutionize? There is some mean guitar in the opening track, "Yo Soy Chicano." I wish I could play like that. I wish I could sing like that. This is inspiring music for the Chicano liberation movement, something everyday people really took passion from back in the day. An oldie but a goodie. I haven't heard the rest of the album yet, but I'll try to get it for our campus radio station. Great educational music. Whoa! Yeah!

The Epic "Dogtown" is a Startling Piece of Song Painting with a Topical Edge, and "Same Sad Singer" is a Haunting, Romantic Confessional that Explores Some of the Same Territory as "Taxi". The Record Holds Up Well in Part Because of Its Strange Combination of Lean Production and Rich Sounds. The Album features Ron Palmer on Electric Guitar, Tim Scott on Cello, John Wallace on Bass, and Harry Chapin on Acoustic Guitar. Sniper and Other Love Songs Never Sold Remotely as Well as Its Predecessor, but it is Actually a Bolder and Better Album.

A Gift for Harry's fans..........2005-04-20

It really a gift for his fans to hear "new" music from Harry Chapin after all these years. Electra records made a nice package out of this, bringing back the butterfly label and liner notes from the original LPs. A special cover overlays the jewel case. The quality of the recording is excellent. If Electra has any more of his music in the vault, I hope they will release it and soon.

At long last, someone has done some serious digging into the far reaches of the late, great Harry Chapin's catalog. I'm glad to see it happen and I hope it continues with the remainder of his work, but I can't say this collection quite qualifies for buried-treasure status. Of course, other hardcore Chapin fans won't need me to tell them it's worth the expense to finally hear the long-lost half of the fabled Double Album That Wasn't. (Elektra balked at letting Chapin follow the success of "Taxi" with a 2 LP set, hence the lost tracks unearthed here.) On the other hand, if you only own "Greatest Stories Live" or "The Gold Medal Collection" and are thinking about a second purchase, this probably isn't your best choice until you become more familiar with Chapin's work as a whole.

Chapin's first solo album, "Heads and Tales," has always been my favorite, with its beautiful melodies and passionate lyrics about isolation and lost love. (That admittedly vague description literally fits every song on the album.) This collection includes "Heads and Tales" in its entirety, with the unfortunate exception of the opening track, "Could You Put Your Light On, Please?" Only an alternate version of that is included here, featuring a poppier, acoustic opening which segues into the original version towards the end of the song. It's an interesting variation, but it just isn't as good as the beautiful original, which could easily have fit on the disc along with the rest of the album. That omission is, in my opinion, the biggest strike against this edition.

"Sniper and Other Love Songs" is quite a bit less accessible than its predecessor, which might be why it was one of the last Chapin albums to be reissued on CD. But the repeated listenings it takes to enjoy the album are well worth it. I've met a lot of fans who consider it Harry's best effort. It is certainly his darkest, tackling subjects like self-mutilation, abortion, underage sex and, most notably, murder. The title track, a nine minute epic about Texas mass-murderer Charles Whitman, is perhaps Chapin's most ambitious work ever. He takes on the point of view of several different characters in Whitman's life and the tragedy he inflicted, changing the time signature and instrumentation with each change of narrator, and ending it all in a raw climax. Don't be surprised if you have to listen to this one several times before you appreciate it as a whole.

While nothing else on the album is quite that hard hitting, most of the other songs are topical on some level. The uncharacteristically opaque "Barefoot Boy" is (I think) a gorgeously sad call to arms for the then-nascent environmentalist movement, in the form of a portrait of a country boy trying in vain to escape the growing city. A much longer, previously unreleased arrangement of this one is included here in addition to the version from the original album. "Woman Child" is a frank look at a very young woman in over her head, from the perspective of the older man who put her there. (Chapin prided himself on never being afraid to take on the personas of the nastier characters in his songs!) "Burning Herself" is more sympathetic, but just as uncomfortable, in its tale of a woman addicted to doing just that. Elsewhere, there are echoes of the less-intense "Heads and Tales." "And the Baby Never Cries" and "A Better Place to Be" are classic Chapin story-songs of people unlucky in love and life, while "Sunday Morning Sunshine" and "Circle" inject some much-needed lightheartedness into the picture.

And the newly released songs? Most of them were worth waiting for. "City Suite" (the lyrics make it clear that this was almost certainly the intended spelling of the title) is brilliant. It's yet another of several reworkings of one of Chapin's earliest songs, "Someone Keeps Calling My Name," and in my opinion it's better than either of the songs he released under that title. "Big Big City" and "Pigeon Run" do a great job of capturing some of the absurdities of city life. "Dirty Old Man" barely qualifies as the same song as the throwaway track found on "The Gold Medal Collection" - here he tackles a similar subject with respect rather than silliness. "Halfway to Heaven" and "Simple Song" are early recordings of later-released songs (the latter was rechristened "I Wanna Learn A Love Song"), and I wasn't so impressed with them. As with most such alternate takes, they're interesting to those who are familiar with the later versions, but Chapin just hadn't nailed them yet.

It's a lot and it's not perfect, but if you're like most Harry Chapin fans, that's probably just what you want. For those of us who are already hooked, this was long overdue!

Harry Chapin's first two story song albums plus bonus tracks.......2004-08-06

What we have here are the first two albums produced by Harry Chapin. While "Heads and Tales" does contain the exquisite "Taxi," that really is the only above average song to be found on this 1972 album. Even though this is obviously an early effort, you will still find the core elements that would be developed so wonderfully in later albums: the lengthy story songs ("Dogtown"), the focus on the downs of relationships ("Sometime, Somewhere Wife"), the angst of human existence ("Everybody's Lonely") and the self-awareness of the singer-songwriter ("Same Sad Singer").

Of course it was "Taxi" that brought Harry to the attention of the public despite its 6:44 length, with its simple guitar, haunting cello, and falsetto solo by Big John Wallace, telling the story of a chance meeting several years between two old lovers. However, since Taxi is to be found on a couple of other CDs, this particular one is primarily going to be of interest to the devote Harry Chapin fan, which, come to think of it, is really the only type out there, even after all these years following his tragic death.

"Sniper & Other Love Songs" is much stronger than "Heads & Tales," but I would not say it is a great album. What it is would be an album with a couple of really great songs. I used "Sniper" in class for years to show how one song could use different musical themes to change mood. The idea of a song clearly inspired by the Texas Tower sniper strikes everyone as very strange at first, but what they usually end up thinking after actually listening to the song a few times is how good Chapin could be as a storyteller. This is driven home even more so by "A Better Place to Be," which is arguably more poignant than "Taxi" and almost as beautiful melodically.

I could even make the case that even with all the epic story songs that were to come, from "Taxi" to "Bummer" to "The Mayor of Candor Lied," the two best ones are on this album ("There Was Only One Choice" is so autobiographical that it stands on its own). Add to this "Circle," Harry's favorite final encore piece, and "Sunday Morning Sunshine," and this album rates above average no matter what you think about the other tracks. Those four songs alone justify having this album, which is probably the most neglected Chapin album of them all.

Individually I would have rated these two albums at four star each, but with all these bonus tracks it justifies going up to the full five. The full versin of "Barefoot Boy" alone just about justifies that addition, but there are a couple of "new" songs we get to here for the first time and treasure. Sigh. Harry, you were a good man and you are sorely missed.

What can I say? All these are or have been famous in Greece at one time or another. They are all inspired by that old musical art of Rembetico, the Greek blues.
I have been to Greece so many times, never as a tourist, and the Greek heart speaks to mine... There is a yearning in the bousoukia that grabs you by the plexus solaris! I want to get up, raise my hands, shout "opa" and dance like Zorbas, or even more so - pack my bag and fly there!
