The best performance of these trios........2007-06-02
The Best!.......2007-05-14
Beautiful Mendelssohn!.......2005-12-16
Here Eugene Istomin, Leonard Rose, Isaac Stern perform Piano Trios 1 and 2 in a manner that bespeaks camaraderie of the performers as well as a complete respect for these luminous works. Some have called these works piano sonatas with obbligato and while for this listener that is an unfair judgment, Eugene Istomin plays the piano part with enough flair and thoughtful propulsion that he does at times sound the more important. But that is Mendelssohn's writing and not a self-aggrandizement of a pianist.
The overall sound is simply superb. These two trios are some of the loveliest ever written from that era and the gentlemen performing them offer sophisticated and informed interpretations. The recording is excellent, the music is rarefied! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

Truth in advertising.......2007-06-01
All three members of this trio are excellent instrumentalists who show a homogeneous approach to both compositions. The trio is helped by an excellent recording that puts all three member rock solid in the sound stage and has great clarity and dynamics.
My only reservation about this recording is the trio's approach to Mendelsohn. To me these interpretations too often sound more like early Brahms than Mendelsohn. While listening to this cd once or twice this extra "spice" was new and exciting, yet upon repeated listening started getting in the way of the "real" Mendelsohn.
Yet, as my title implied this trio offers truth in advertising. Robert Schumann characterized himself in two imaginary figures, the forceful Florestan and the poetic Eusebius. Indeed this cd projects a Florestan Mendelsohn. To me, though, a more Eusebian approach would have been even more appropriate for repeated listening to this disc.
Emphatic Melodies, Spiritual Complacency.......2007-03-24
At present I prefer listening to Raff's trios simply because they are unfamiliar. Schumann is an intermediate figure. His melodies can be emphatic but he usually has something quirkish and uncanny up his sleeve. Brahms emulates Beethoven's sound of ardent effort. Raff achieves a type of beauty I do not find in other composers. Mendelssohn's comparatively delicate music, as in the second movement of the D minor trio sounds "sentimental" in a way that Raff never does. I define "sentimental" as a tendency to make a virtue of weakness in a way that the Apostle Paul never intended when he declared that he gloried in his infirmities.
The second movement of the D minor is emphatic in its own way and sounds like one of Mendelssohn's "Songs without Words" for solo piano. The piano entrance of the movement adds to this effect. Like the other composer from a Hebrew Christian background, Anton Rubinstein, Mendelssohn maintains a high professional standard; but this consistency gives his music a quality of deliberate limitation. It lacks the quality of "arete" or adventurous courage. Mendelssohn simulates adventure in his "Ruy Blas" and "Hebrides" overtures but does not allow the spirit of adventure to intrude on his professional muse. The hymn tune that turns up emphatically in the finale of the C minor trio seems more complacent than spiritually challenging.
All the Elegance and Tenderness of Mendelssohn's Perfect Piano Trios.......2006-06-20
Mendelssohn's two Piano Trios hold the magic of his larger compositions. While the Piano Trio No. 1 quotes phrases and melodic lines from his symphonies, his early music for 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and his 'Songs Without Words', the Piano Trio No. 2 is a more deeply personal statement, more solemn yet still with the airborne delicacy we associate with Mendelssohn: it is a fully mature work.
The immaculate ensemble playing by the Florestan Trio brings more energy and sense of continuity to the works than do other performances. There never seems to be a moment when the vision of each of the movements is in question: the Trio finds the line of thought and delivers it with grace of tone and technique. For those who admire exquisite chamber music, and even if there are other recordings of these two beautiful works in library, this CD is well worth adding to the connoisseur's collection. Grady Harp, June 06

The Florestan Trio scores again!.......2005-12-09
I have two good recordings already of these works: the Stern/Rose/Istomin trio on Columbia/Sony and the Vienna Piano Trio on Nimbus. The Florestan Trio's recording becomes my new favorite, not least for their choice of tempi. Frequently with the Vienna Piano Trio, I felt that the tempi were a bit rushed, with the result that the performances sounded a bit frantic (I've noticed this in the group's live performances also). The Florestan, on the other hand, is ideally paced, missing none of the sweep of the D minor trio's first movement, for example, yet without giving the sense that the notes are about to spin out of control. Their performance of the (later) C minor trio led to a re-thinking on my part: previously I'd discounted this work as the inferior, "greyer"-sounding of the two, but with a performance as fresh as this, one begins to think that the C minor work is in fact the subtler and more accomplished piece. I had a similar reaction after hearing the Florestan Trio's recording of the two Schumann trios, and it speaks volumes for the ensemble's quality when they can help us re-discover and re-evaluate works we thought we knew. The sound quality, as we've come to expect from Hyperion, is first-rate, ideally balanced, detailed yet warm.
What's next? The Florestan Trio has recorded most of the standard Romantic repertoire now; let's hope that they will get around to some of the (slightly) less well-known works, such as the trios of Smetana, Tchaikovsky, Arensky, and Rachmaninov. Haydn and Mozart also seem ideally suited for the Florestan Trio. I would be delighted to see the first volume of the "Complete Piano Trios of Joseph Haydn"!
Finally, a few words about this record company. Music lovers may be aware that Hyperion has had considerable legal and financial difficulties recently (for more information, visit their website at [...]). Let me say that this record label, perhaps more than any other classical label, is deserving of your support, even if its CDs cost a bit more. Their artists are outstanding, their choice of repertoire often adventurous, and their engineering superb. We can thank Hyperion for such notable achievements of classical recording as the complete lieder of Schubert and Schumann; the "Romantic Piano Concerto" series, now being followed up with violin and cello. This company probably has done more for the classical music lover in the past couple decades than the majors (Sony, RCA, EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Philips, Warner) combined. Cheers to them, and let's help them keep doing this great work.

The K-L-R Trio's brief tenure with Vox produced these recordings of Romantic chamber-music masterpieces. This is an exceptionally virtuosic ensemble, made up of three soloists who have devoted part of every year to performing together for a couple of decades. As a result, their performances are extremely powerful yet very well integrated, certainly a desirable combination in repertoire like this. They even do a very idiomatic job of playing Dvorák, while their Brahms and Mendelssohn are really superb. Not only are these performances far above the normal standard for budget recordings, but they are also fine digital recordings. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:

The origional vinyl disk for the Mendelssohn was full price as far as I can remember, this is a really good deal, the Brahms and the Dvorak are OK but the Mendelssohn itself pays for the set.

Lovely Mendelssohn Piano Trios.......2006-03-24
The trios are performed by the Gould Piano Trio, an ensemble consisting of three young English musicians: Lucy Gould, Violin, Martin Storey, cello, and Benjamin Firth, piano. The performance is exquisite, with great expression and musicianship both in ensemble and in solo passages. The disk has received substantial critical acclaim.
Mendelssohn's first piano trio in D minor opus 49 dates from 1837 while the second piano trio in C minor opus 66 dates from 1845. Each work is in four movements. Both trios have extended and brilliant piano parts (I am a pianist at heart.) while the first trio spotlights the cello considerably more that does the second. There are many similarities between the two trios, but each has a voice of its own.
The first movement of the D minor features two melancholy and lyrical themes, each of which is stated initially by the cello. The opening movement of the C minor trio opens with a dark arpeggio passage for the piano and continues with a pleading, passionate theme first stated in the violin. The opening movements of both works include large minor-key climaxes, big chordal passages for the piano, and passionate endings.
Each trio has a lovely, lyrical slow movement which begins with a lengthy piano solo -- that of the C minor trio is rather the more introspective. In both trios, the cello and violin complement the piano and give the slow movements warm flowing characters contrasting to the outbursts in the opening movements.
Both trios include a light, quickly-paced scherzo of a type unique to Mendelssohn. The D minor begins with quick, repeated passages for the ensemble which develop into a brief, energetic middle section and which return in a quiet, light and energetic close. The scherzo of its companion features an endlessly spinning figuration in the piano accompanied by themes in the violin and cello. The movement includes long running light passagework for the piano and a soft pizzicato close in the strings.
The finales of both trios are rondos which open in the minor key, progress through a series of episodes with clangorous piano chordal writing and shimmering arpeggios and contrasting dramatic or lyrical passages for the cello and violin. Both finales work themselves at length into the major key and end on a tone of triumph.
This recording of Mendelsshon's piano trios is full of the intimacy and joy in music-making that characterize chamber music at its best.

Fabulous music and performances.......2004-09-19
But the recording is a wonderful bargain. The whole recording is terrific, but the first trio is particularly outstanding.
I recommend this recording for seasoned lovers of trios, but also as a great way in for anyone who has not experienced piano trios before. I doubt if there is a more delightful composition or performance than the first Mendelssohn Piano Trio.
Highly recommended
