Superb Fra Diavolo in the full Italian version.......2004-05-06

This is the full Italian language version of Auber's sparkling little comedy opera. Gedda recorded the oepra in French for EMI, but, frankly, Dano Raffanti in this Martina Franca Festival production does a finer job. If you don't know this opera, this may be where to start. Preiser's release of the classic German (1944) version is also welcome, but comes with no libretto, while this one does. Highly recommended.

Auber in Italian...acquire it if you can.......2002-10-03

This recording of Auber's modest comic masterpiece is sung in Italian, and indeed, as in the case of his LA MUETTE DI PORTICI, Italian was the language of choice of this work for much of its history. The older German-language recording (on Preiser) and the recent EMI recording (with Nicolai Gedda) in the original French demonstrate the opera's versatility.

This recording, made at the Martina Franca Festival in Italy, is well worth having. The roles are cast well and the singing is uniformly good. DAniel Raffanti and Martine Dupuy invest conviction in their roles. Sound is good stereo (for a live performance).
