Album matches content hype.......2007-05-31
I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.
Fun.......2007-01-21
This CD would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys marches. Some of the marches are popular, others are not. All are well-performed and can be enjoyed - LOUDLY!
invigorating!.......2006-12-05
Great recordings of stirring music. I like to play it loud while my kids and I clean house. It makes it go by fast.
Totally awesome!.......2005-03-27
My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!

Excellent, but one missing..........2007-03-07
These are fabulous marches played with huge amounts of zest, but one of Fiedler's best RCA marches - the Zacatecas March - was left out!!! Why??? There would have been plenty of room, and it seems to be available on a Japanese release - why not this one?
Otherwise, no hesitation at all.
Simply a Fun Set of Marches.......2003-10-18
In the 5th grade, I tried out for Little League. My desire to play baseball was not rooted in any love for the sport. I thought my father wanted me to play a sport. I was so great at the tryouts; he said some memorable words to me. "Tim, I think you ought to stick with playing the clarinet." I am sure he was trying to spare me humiliation on the athletic field. Little did he know he was starting my love affair with music, a far greater gift.
Perhaps because I was in the school band, I gravitated toward marches, and this collection of marches conducted by Arthur Fielder was one of the first recordings I purchased (6th or 7th grade I believe). At the time (the mid 1970's) it was only available on LP. As soon as the CD was available, I purchased it for nostalgic reasons. This collection had many popular marches such as the Grand March from Aida, Stars and Stripes Forever, Pomp and Circumstance, as well as some lesser known marches. This was one of the collections that piqued my interest in orchestral music. Though the marches could probably best be termed "light classical," it was an introduction to more serious music. Many years later I used this same recording when I taught as background music during art or spelling lessons. Again, it served as an introduction to more serious music.
This is not a complicated set; it is simply a little jewel that is a joy to listen to and a fun addition to a music collection.
Great Marching Music.......2000-11-14
Even though I am a Yankee I still love "Dixie." This is great music for pre-school children and those just entering school. I think it helps build character. I like this album.
Great.......1999-05-23
I have had this tape for years and it just got torn, so I have to replace it immediately because my granddaughter, age 3, also loves it.

A matter of taste.......2007-07-03
This composer is no "Mozart".
One minute of really great melody,
and forty-nine minutes of filler.
Ippolitov Ivanov.......2007-01-25
Very interesting cd, the Russian composer Ippolitov Ivanov deserves more attention for his music which sounds very much like Rimsky-Korsakov. Very difficult to find his music on cd.
Captivating, interesting, lively, and energetic.......2006-06-25
Hearing I-I's great sounds and adding them to the magic of Borodin, R-K, et al, there can be little doubt that the great Russian composers, though they got a late start, came up with a musical statement all their own, one which adds so much color to the world of classical music.
This delightful compilation might inspire music lovers who wouldn't consider classical music. I-I's imagination must have been very rich and playful, for these short works are just plain fun to hear--and you might spring to your feet in dance. If you're an attentive listener, they will stir your imagination. If you're a casual listener, they will draw and sharpen your attention with their interesting and unusual sounds.
The recording quality is very good, with very clear sound, effectively displaying all the instruments at work. There's a tantalizing flavor in Ippolitov-Ivanov's work: lots of space and air, something that I can describe only as large, but without pretense, fabrication, or pomp. His appeal is immediate. His work is easily approachable by anyone, yet it still appeals to a refined ear.
I sincerely hope that a lost symphony of his will someday be discovered--or else that a new generation of composers will revitalize the great tradition of Russian music, surely one of the richest of all the great cultures. I bow to all the great Russian masters. May they live forever...
Love this CD!.......2006-03-10
I would highly recommend this CD if you love the big orchestral pieces like I do.
I'm not crazy about typical Russian compositions but I love this CD because of the Turkish influences.
The one small complaint I have is about Procession of the Sardar. I heard another version of it on a compilation CD that I thought was great and was the main reason why I bought this CD but the version here is less energetic and slower. The percussion parts are less pronounced and even subdued a bit. It doesn't sound clean & polished like the rest of the CD.
I also wish there were more tracks on this CD. Its so hard to find anything by this composer.
Overall, its worth adding to your collection.
Capturing the Crossroads of Civilization.......2005-04-10
Russian composer Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935) is considered to be one of the lesser-known talents of the late Romantic/early Modern period, with his music rarely played in concert these days and his name shadowed over by such illustrious contemporaries as Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and Alexander Borodin. Indeed, a search on Amazon for a comprehensive package of this composer will yield only this CD, a sort of 'greatest hits' consisting of the Caucasian Sketches (Suites No. 1 and 2), the Turkish March, and the assembled Turkish Fragments, all conducted by Arthur Fagen with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. Information on the Internet is equally sketchy; a good deal of this review was paraphrased from the CD's liner notes.
The son of a mechanic, Ippolitov-Ivanov studied in his youth at the Cathedral of St. Isaac, where he served as a choirboy, and later at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He completed his studies with famed instructor/composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and would owe a lifelong debt of influence to the master. The composer's first appointment was as a director of a music academy in Tiflis, Georgia, and Ippolitov-Ivanov spent seven years amidst the non-Slavic minorities of the region, absorbing their folk-music and culture. Upon returning to Moscow in 1893, the composer penned the two *Kavkasskiye Eskizi*, evoking the southern-exotic ambience of Georgia, particularly its amalgam of Christian and Islamic culture and the oriental influence of the region.
Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 1 begins with 'In a Mountain Pass', a landscape tone-poem wherein a simple melodic passage grows and swells, climaxing with percussive fills before reaching a gentle denouement. The second sketch, 'In a Village,' is bookended with an exotic violin riff and, as its centerpiece, contains a cheerfully rustic folk-song; 'In a Mosque' progresses naturally from its decline, serene and gliding, before the 'Procession of the Serdar' literally bursts into the atmosphere with its regal, parade-like culmination of the previous themes.
Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 2: "Iveria" refers to an ancient kingdom of this name, a Christian enclave and region marked as a meeting-point of civilizations, contested by Persia, the Ottoman Empire and finally Russia, courtesy of Catherine the Great. The suite starts off with the nine-minute 'Introduction: Lamentation of Princess Ketevana,' an initially somber preface that climaxes mid-way through, then scales back to its sorrowful motif. The tribal dance of the 'Lesghinka' builds methodically over the course of four minutes, erupting at last with pounding drums and furious string-work, and the 'Georgian March' carries the momentum with triumphant horns and another climax worthy of Borodin's *Prince Igor*.
The 'Turkish March' crashes in and sounds like a natural accompaniment to the Sketches, rather than a musical piece published thirty-five years afterward. Ippolitov-Ivanov's interest in the folk-music of the Uzbek, Kazahk and Turkish regions received official encouragement from the Russian government, for its unifying principles; politically, however, Ippolitov-Ivanov retained a measure of independence, ignoring contemporary quarrels about the encroaching dissonance of modernism and the demands of "usefulness" in proletariat art. He had already developed his style in the 1880s and 90s, and the final selections on this CD, the Turkish Fragments, display vividly this particular style, a Romantic-era lushness wedded to oriental folk-music, similar in approach to that of Bartok. 'At Rest' has an ironic title, given its smashing momentum in the center; 'Night' glides calmly into the aptly-named 'Festival,' a rousing finale to this suite.
If, gentle reader, you have a taste for exotic-tinged classical music, Ippolitov-Ivanov's `Caucasian Sketches' is a must-buy. Highly Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing! The reason I decided to become a music major!.......2002-11-18
This is one of the most inspirational CD's I have ever listened to. Not only is the playing perfect, the choice in music for the CD is perfect. It provides the listener with several different styles, and yet many similar styles. The group plays the traditional Russian pieces with flair and great musicianship, such as the Stravinsky and the Shostakovich. The main reason that I enjoy this CD is that each player is performing their best for this album. Each player sounds even more amazing than they usually do. I especially enjoy when Sam takes the tuba solo from Russian Sailors' Dance down an octave. Each performer from this group is one of the best in the world on their respective instruments. In conclusion, all I can say is that this CD is amazing.
Utterly Necessary.......2000-10-24
This was the first brass quintet cd I ever purchased, and it has been by far the best. This group's sound is seriously unparalleled by any other quintet, including Canadian Brass. The blend and unity of style is so perfect that one is encompassed by the music, hearing each part individually and as part of the whole at the same time. Playing arrangements of excellent orchestral music, the Empire Brass Quintet truly demonstrates its virtuosity.

Customer Reviews:
Only thing wrong is the title... Good classical collection!.......2003-10-13
I've pondered the title of this fine classical collection for quite some time (far longer than is warranted, to be sure), and I've yet to come to a conclusion as to why this album is called CANDLELIGHT FAVORITES. While some selections are solemn (Enigma Variations), romantic (Variations on a Waltz), and intense (Concerto for 2 Oboes), far more pieces are bright (Water Music) and even whimsical (The Entertainer). Though it didn't exactly set the mood I was anticipating, this album will by no means be collecting dust on my shelf.
This collection surpasses many classical variety albums in its overall quality, regardless of the excellent price. The performances of the respective pieces are excellent as is the audio engineering, which is crisp and clear. What suprised me most, after a couple listens, was how well the widely varied pieces fit together as an album. The selections cross time from the early Baroque period into the 20th century, and they all have a certain continuity. This gives the album added value, as you'd have to purchase many albums to have the wide range of music represented here. CANDLELIGHT FAVORITES gives a mixture of instantly recognizable tunes with some "deeper cuts". It's essentially a classical "mix tape" of sorts, and it works well for both background and purposeful listening.
So excuse the cheesy cover design and the slight title misnomer, and you've got a very affordable and welcome addition to your classic music collection. CANDLELIGHT FAVORITES comes recommended for those seeking a good, varied classical album.

Customer Reviews:
Best Brass for your Buck.......2001-02-12
This is one of my favorite CD's in my collection. It has some of my favorite symphonic songs. This CD was the biggining of my brass CD collection and has the best collection of bombastic songs on the market.
Good Addition to CD Collection.......2000-06-11
It's certainly not the most comprehensive collection of "thunderous" classical music-- TimeLife's "Classical Thunder" comes close-- but for this price, it's a no-commitment CD. You can stick the CD in, not know the names of the pieces, enjoy the brilliance, and match which movie trailers have used which tracks.

Beautiful and exotic.......2004-01-24
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not extremely knowledgeable about classical music; I just know what I enjoy listening to and this is one of my favorites when I'm the mood for something a little bit "exotic" sounding. A lot of the composers are Russian and the music has the flavor of the East. "In the Steppes of Central Asia" is particularly lovely.

Customer Reviews:
A huge disapointment.......2004-12-01
Yes, this disc has some stunning music...about 2 minutes per selection of it. Sometimes a little more, but this is just a movement or so of each. I was thrilled to find Andrew Davis' version of The Polovstian Dances and found only a short choral section of it. It is a useful survey if you are a fledgeling listener to Russian classical music, but other than that, it is pretty useless for listening.
The true Russian spirit............2000-06-18
This CD has a wonderful combination of the best tunes Russia has to offer (under 10 minutes of course!). Folk tunes like Two Guitars and Dark Eyes add to the Russian spirit. Also a nice war-like tune by an unfamilar man by the name of Knipper. This is his only work that made it to the world of classical music. Many other works done nicely by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and many others who don't end with 'sky'. Very nice way to introduce you to the Russians. Buy it even if you know about the Russian works. There are a few 'one hitters' on this CD.

If You Like the A.K. Stuff, Get It.......2007-02-24
I wouldn't reccommend this for the Ippolitov-Ivanov piece. I have listened to it a number of times, and it isn't why I pop in the cd. I don't skip over it (ok, well, sometimes I do), it simply is not a reason for buying the disc. Many composers write soothing music. Most write it better than it is performed here. Two stars, but that isn't an embarrassment. I would regret the purchase if it were only for that.
Symphony 3. I heard it twice on satellite radio, and knew I needed this piece of music. If you like loud and brassy, really loud and really brassy, this was made for you. Not many pieces 'sound like Khachaturian's 3rd.' Those that do, I want to hear. Don't buy this on a lark. If you dig this stuff on first listen, not many options exist.
While I bought this for the 3rd, I may enjoy the opening track more. By twenty seconds in, I was hooked. The 'Triumphal Poem' is a fun ride with a few twists, and I feel happy I picked up this cd each time I hear either the first or last track.
If you like stirring Russian stuff like Rachmaninov, you'll probably like this one.
Loud and exciting.......2005-12-31
Khachaturian's 3rd Symphony must be one of the most under-played and under-appreciated orchestal works of the 20th century. This is good ol' bombastic Aram at his best; count 'em...15 trumpets cry out in triumph to open this piece and whet the listener's appetite for the big music to come. Then the demonically possesed organ begins to sound; this is "haunted house" music par excellence. Of course, exotic dance rhythms and melodies abound here too, a Khachaturian trademark. As a whole, this music is loud, loud, loud and the sonics of this Chandos recording catch all the details. It can't get much better.
A workable treatment is given to Ippolitov-Ivanov's CAUCASIAN SKETCHS, no doubt included on this recording to accompany the Trans-Caucasian musings of Khachaturian. The most famous of the sketchs, PROCESSION OF THE SARDAR dissapoints the most; it lacks the needed "oomph" to really bring the piece to life. Notwithstanding, the rest of Ippolitov-Ivanov's evocative orchestral suite is performed much more authentically.
Khachaturian's TRIUMPHAL POEM is a rare gem. Ok, so this Soviet-era music is unabshely nationalistic, but it remains good spirited and fun.
Highly recommended, especially for the 3rd Symphony.
Khachaturian's compelling Symphony No. 3.......2005-08-29
The main attraction on this Chandos disc is the Symphony No. 3 by Armenian Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian. Written in the era when Soviet officials had banned "formalism" in music -- AKA sonata form or any other form that excluded heroic Soviet themes amidst patriotic flag-waving -- Khachaturian responded by composing what he called a "symphony poem".
The 24 minute excursion is hardly a symphony -- not even in the realm of Strauss's looseleaf "Alpine" Symphony -- nor is it a symphonic poem in the strictest sense. It bears little in common, developmentally, with Khachaturian's Symphony No. 2, his best symphony.
In addition, the recording uses 15 trumpets to help make its statement. The music revolves around a patriotic theme that turns into an organ statement followed by blasts from the brass and strings. A more rhapsodic episode ensues, to be followed by more ostinato organ and brass. It could be called vapid and empty if it wasn't so good!
The whole thing is one of the loudest musical episodes I've ever heard and one of the most amazing classical extravaganzas short of Messian's "Turangaglia" Symphony. Strangely, it works wonderfully in its excessive, forceful way. The music variably sounds like a patriotic Soviet suite and American film music. The organ section reminded me of William Bolcom's "Black Host", a composition for organ and percussion that was played on NPR stations on Halloween in the 1970s.
About the other compositions...This was the first recording of Khachaturian's "Triumphal Poem" a more traditional (for Khachaturian) Eurasian themed piece in a major key. It is still the only recording listed of this pleasant score.
This performance of Ippolitov-Ivanov's "Caucasian Sketches" is quite good by my reckoning. It may not have the panache of your old favorite but is far more than a tuneful makeweight to the more highly recommended Khachaturian. I found the "In the Mosque" section quite memorable with its mournful underpinnings.
The BBC Philharmonic plays wonderfully on this well recorded CD for conductor Fedor Glushcehenko, who was trained at the Moscow Conservatory. The notes talk about the music and performers and give you some insight into why the two are merged on this recording.
All told, this is most valuable for the energetic and forceful performance of the Symphony No. 3, which has only been recorded a couple other times. This version is clearly preferable among those available.
Tempos are Lethargic!.......2005-05-10
Why is "Procession of the Sardar" taken so slow lately? My recording of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops is so energized and my old recording with Anatole Fistoulari on and RCA LP is so much more energized! Both Fagan (NAXOS) and Gluschenko are so slow! It seems that elephants are processing! I also do not like Tjeknavorian's because of the cavernous sound. In the 3rd symphony, Stokowski and Tjeknavorian win hands down-at 18 minutes apiece, at least the experience is not as long as Gluschenko's-25 minutes! It just goes on and on!! This CD needed lots of pumping up. It sounds to me like a rehearsal instead of a finished performance. Keep your fingers crossed for a A1 recording of the Sketches in the future.
An Outstanding Disc.......2003-03-06
This recording was highly recommended by Gramophone for the excellent performances by the BBC Philharmonic, particularly of the Khachaturian works. Chandos should also be complimented on the wonderfully clear quality of the recording. Aram Khachaturian is among my favorite composers; he wrote colorful melodies that are very appealing. The main interest on this disc is Khatchaturian's Third Symphony, a work premiered along with Prokofiev's Sixth Symphony in 1947. Both works got their composers in trouble for their "modernism". Khatchaturian's symphony is noteworthy for the 18 trumpets called for in the score, which play a fanfare in seven parts that is undercut by an organ. The music shows Khachaturian experimenting musically. This is not just a work of bombast with the brass playing triumphal music; it also has a slow movement reminiscent of the beautiful slow movements from his piano and violin concertos.
The Triumphal Poem is a piece d'occasion like Shostakovich's Festival Overture. It is music that the Communist Party could appreciate since it is meant to describe people rejoicing in a great people's festival. The Triumphal Poem is charming music as befits a celebration and is, characteristically of Khatchaturian, is a little long winded.
The performance of Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches makes a nice pairing. The work is perfectly played, with the exotic and colorful depiction of places and people wonderfully conveyed. Certainly, the best know part of this suite is the Procession of the Sardar, a march that seems to perfectly describe a sultan and his entourage. "In the Village" makes use of exotic colors convey the many facets of village life and "In the Mosque" is quiet and contemplative. The suite beautifully conveys the place it is meant to describe the Caucasian Mountains.
