As hateful and usually untrue as most "Best of" collections are, this one is the real thing. You actually do get two hours and 20 minutes of Renaissance music performed so exquisitely, so correctly, and so passionately that it's as if an entire era in music makes itself understood through these CDs. The Tallis Scholars are as good as it gets in this repertoire. In addition to getting Allegri's gorgeous Miserere, you'll find Thomas Tallis's 40-part (40!) Spem in alium, some wonderfully weird and dissonant Responsories by Gesualdo, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli (the "how-to" piece of the Renaissance popes, who demanded that the words be understood), and various other works. This stuff is like a finely woven tapestry and should be listened to bits at a time--it's amazingly rich and worth it. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Or, "Best Sacred Vocal Music of the 16th Century".......2006-06-15

My only major complaint with the Tallis Scholars' impressive compilation "The Best of the Renaissance" is its name. The 2-CD set only includes sacred vocal polyphony from the High Renaissance (16th century). That means you get no chansons, no madrigals, no instrumental music of any sort. Perhaps even worse, composers before Josquin are ignored: there's no Dufay, no Binchois, no Ockeghem - nobody who worked primarily in the 15th century. These omissions suggest that the Tallis Scholars probably consider the pre-Josquin period as late Medieval, rather than early Renaissance.

Once you accept "The Best of the Renaissance" for what it is - "Best Sacred Vocal Music of the 16th Century" - you can better enjoy its remarkable assemblage of High Renaissance polyphony. The first disc in particular is quite astonishing. The Scholars lead off with their signature performance of Allegri's "Miserere" - actually a Baroque-era composition in Renaissance "learned style." The Scholars brilliantly convey the "call-and-response" effect of dual choirs through exquisitely crafted acoustics. Turn this one up, turn off the lights, close your eyes, and you're in the Sistine Chapel!

The Scholars follow "Miserere" with an equally impressive performance of a work by their namesake Thomas Tallis - the 40-voice motet "Spem in alium." If "Miserere" hasn't overwhelmed your senses, this one will.

Two virtuoso Mass cycles follow: William Byrd's "Mass for Five Voices" and Josquin's "Missa Pange lingua." The former conveys a sublime, otherworldly beauty, while the latter is a superior example of the style of pervasive imitation that Josquin and his contemporaries pioneered.

The selections on Disc One are so impressive that Disc Two disappoints by comparison. The second set is dominated by two composers I never quite warmed to: Carlo Gesualdo and Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina. Gesualdo was better known for his chromatic, genre-busting madrigals. His "Tenebrae Responses for Holy Thursday" are by contrast quite pleasing, but it's odd to hear sacred music written by a man who killed his wife and her lover. Palestrina's music achieves a sort of static beauty, but lacks forward motion. His "Missa Papae Marcelli" allegedly "saved" sacred polyphony, but arguably watered down the genre in its attempt to appease papal demands for simpler music.

The highlight of Disc 2 is Josquin's lovely "Ave Maria," a motet that provides yet another example of the Franco-Flemish composer's mastery of canonic forms.

"The Best of the Renaissance" expertly compiles the Tallis Scholars' best performances. Those looking for a comprehensive overview of the music of the Renaissance should be aware of its limitations, however.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past!.......2006-02-24

This is a superb collection of Renaissance music. I especially loved Meserere on volume 1 of this two disk album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Prayer Music.......2004-02-07

I perchased this cd and am truly truly glad I did. The sound makes me want to get somewhere and just cry out to God in joy, praise and reverence. The music is so peaceful pious (in a good way). Absolutely beautifuly executed. All the singers are with one accord-- and a great chord at that! Ye must needs purchase this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Some great Renaissance choral music.......2004-02-01

When I recently played the first disk of this collection in the small bookstore/café where I work, a customer told me she had been trying to read but couldn't because she was so captivated by this CD's sublime music.

Although I am a sort of purist who hates when people say they listen to classical music just to relax, I find this CD set is perfect for inspiring reflection and relaxation. So, if you're looking for good music to relax to, this would be an excellent purchase.

The same goes if you're looking for some great Renaissance music. However, the term "Best of the Renaissance" may be a bit of a misnomer; the CD does not include a vast array of music from the said era. This collection is solely /a cappella/ music. Perhaps a more fitting title would be "The Best of Renaissance Choral Music." If you're looking for a broad sampling of music from this time period in one CD collection, this may not be for you. Nevertheless, if you want well performed choral music by some great composers, I recommend this CD to both Renaissance neophytes and aficionados without reservation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but overpraised.......2003-12-30

The Best of the Renaissance is certainly worth buying if only for the amazing "Spem in Alium" by Thomas Tallis.Nevertheless, I do not share the boundless enthusiasm of other reviewers for this album.

To begin with, three Masses are featured on this album, two on the first cd. That is too much to my liking. And while the Mass Pange Lingua by Desprez is undoubtedly a wonderful piece, the other masses are not the best: the Mass for five voices by Byrd, while very beautiful, lacks the depth, emotion and intimacy of his Mass for three voices. The Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina is brilliant but nothing more than an academic exercise in virtuosity.

And I definitely do not appreciate Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories for Holy Saturday. This is simply very mediocre music that nobody would care for if it did not sound modern in its cerebral ugliness and thereby flatter our infatuation with ourselves.

I recommend "The Essential Tallis Scholars" either instead of or in addition to "The Best of the Renaissance", depending on your pocket and interest for Renaissance choral music. I would also recommend O Magnum Mysterium by the Robert Shaw festival singers. Although only a third of that album is devoted to Renaissance music, the interpretation is so beautiful and spiritual that it is really worth having in your Renaissance music collection.

Although listed as being by "various artists", these two discs were recorded in 1996 and 1997, respectively, by the monks and choirboys of Downside Abbey and School (near Bath, in England).

The discs represents a sharing with the rest of the world of the music which brings together the two communities, of monks and schoolboys, at masses in the Abbey.

The quality of the recording on disc 1 is superior to that on the later disc, but both convey the beauty and simplicity of the religious music and plainsong which lie at the heart of Benedictine communities. You do not have to be religious, yourself, to enjoy the sense of peace and serenity conveyed by the pieces. Relax and let the sound wash over you.

The title, "Gregorian Chillout", tends to belittle the faith which underlies the music, but do not let this put you off. Buy these and enjoy them to their fullest. You will not be disappointed.

To understand Carl Orff, you have to know both where he was coming from (academia, with a strong interest in pre-classical European music and Classical Greek music, as well as a strong to desire to reduce the perhaps overly complex music of Wagner and Mahler to a simpler mode), and where he was leading to. Carmina Burana only seems an anomaly if you don't see it in context.

This disc ranges from late 13th century compositions to late 20th century compositions, directed by one of the pioneers of the Ancient Music movement. Orff's influence is heard in how we INTERPRET ancient music, and in how some contemporary composers' (Arvo Part and even Ligeti) own work shows that influence.

Konrad Ruhland does an excellent job of tying the past to the future, using Carl Orff as the bow.

I bought this CD with hopes that it would as bright and hopefully better then Carmina Burana... With much disappointment I have listened to this CD... It is a collection of Church Choir Music... It doesn't have the spunk or energy of Carmina Burana...

The Flemish Orlando Lassus (1530-1594) was almost the musical twin of the Italian Palestrina. Not only did they look alike, with pointed beards and serous deepset eyes, but they held choirmaster jobs successively at the same church, and died in the same year. Unlike his "twin", Lassus did not concentrate wholly on church music; and secular writings brought his grand total to twelve-hundred and fifty, a formidable sixty volumes. Although Palestrina was accounted a good business man, Lassus cashed in on his talents even more successfully.

Lassus' religious writings were serious, meditative, almost somber, whereas in those designed for the world, he of course released a lighter mood. He understood the instruments of his day,-the lute, viol and dulcimer-and wrote for groups of singers as though their voices were these instruments, instead of following a purely vocal line. While Palestrina's compositions were characterized by pure, graceful melody, Lassus' displayed more variety, greater depth, more abrupt and massive architecture; the former can be compared with Raphael and Mozart, the latter with Michael Angelo and Bach. The two men together represent the highest point attained in sixteenth century polyphonic writing.
THE REQUIEM of 1580, structured according to a rigid plan, leans on the Gregorian melodies from the mass of the dead. All movements (8) are worked out in very concentrated fashion, the designs of which extend from pure imitation to numerous possible voice groupings; to homophony.
FOR THE MAGNIFICAT of 1582, Lassus used as a model the famous six-voice motet 'Praeter rerum seriem' of Josquin des Pres. It's interesting to note that it was acceptable to make use of existing works to create new compositions; this was a common practise until well into the 17th century.
PRO CANTIONE ANTIQUA of London with its all-male singers definately have the authentic sound of the 16th century. With the instruments (cornets, trombones) the required deep quality adds to the authenticity of it all. Through groups like this we are able to understand something of the greatness of that art at the transition from Renaissance to Baroque.

            --Orlandus Lassus--
A composer of the late Renaissance period, Orlandus Lassus was born in 1532. Franco-Flemish in background, there is a legend that he was kidnapped three different times during his boyhood for his exquisite choir voice. Lassus produced over 2,000 works in Latin, Italian, French, and German vocal genres, practically every one known in his time. His versatility is virtually unmatched. Among the 2000 pieces were 530 motets (on religious and secular themes) and over 60 masses. His career was spent in the Low Countries, in Italy, and in Germany, and he traveled extensively throughout other European countries. He died in 1594 one of the most celebrated composers of the age.

            --Requiem--
The mass here consists of the classic parts - Introit, Kyrie, Gradulae (Cantus gregorianus), Tractus 'Absolve Domine', Offertorium 'Domine Jesu Christe', Sanctus and Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and Communio 'Lux Aeterna'. The tenor leads as cantus firmus in many parts, but there are definite pieces here that introduced new standards to the way the requiem is structures in the Renaissance, leading to Baroque times.

            --Motets--
Motets (in this sense) are choral settings of Latin religious texts, generally in four to six voiced parts, sometimes more. The 'O bone Jesu' (motet for four voices), 'Alma Redemptoris mater' (motet for six voices), and 'Ave Maria' (motet for five voices) show the variations in the voices. The Magnificat, on the other hand, is a large-scale, six-voice setting that draws on an earlier well known piece by Josquin des Prez.
The performance here is done by the Pro Cantione Antiqua, led by Bruce Turner. The Pro Cantione Antiqua have had an extensive recording and performing history, with great experience in the kind of chant, polyphony and Renaissance style that Palestrina calls for. Turner states that in a Renaissance setting, 'music is not something fixed by the written note but something to be recreated rather than reproduced.' There is something of that here, although Lassus was rather structured in his Requiem, certainly.

The Pro Cantione Antiqua is joined for certain pieces that call for more voices by members of the Collegium Aureum and the Blaserkreis fur Alte Musik Hamburg for the Magnificat and motets.

These recordings were made in the early 1970s and originally released on vinyl. This transfer to digital has been done with great care, and it is a very good recording.
