4 out of 5 stars Incandescent Live Broadcasts, Fairly Well Transferred.......1998-09-18

This release is a compilation from a series of broadcasts of 1951 through 1953, featuring performances given live in Carnegie Hall, before an audience that inspired the Maestro and his players to produce that extra spark of spontaneity and emotion that is sometimes lacking in comparisons with the more contrived and overcautious recording sessions.

Compare the incandescent projection of the Third Act Prelude to "Lohengrin", which opened the all-Wagner concert of 7 March 1953, with the commercial authorized release from the recording session of 22 October 1951 (RCA / BMG Toscanini Collection CD, volume 48) and you will immediately note the greater commitment and passion. On pristine FM aircheck tapes made by amateurs in the New York area, the sound quality and orchestral balances are actually superior in brilliance and body to the 1951 "Red Seal" original recordings, but -- sadly -- this Fonit-Cetra release has placed a veil over the crisp original sound.

Many of the Toscanini issues on this label, from the LP and CD era, have evidence of generational loss: a reduction in high frequency timbre, and a hollow boominess to the lower midrange, as well as a loss of the lowest frequencies.

The present release, however, may seem to sound fine if you have not heard the original aircheck tapes: I would have presented a 5 Star accolade had this album included the last degree of audio transparency on the best archival copies of the programs.
