4 out of 5 stars Perlman's Bach.......2007-07-04

These are good-to-excellent performances on a bargain disc. Probably the best single disc set of these concertos at any price.

5 out of 5 stars Great interpretation.......2007-05-30

I was looking for a recording of Bach's Concerto No. 1 in A minor so that I could hear how to better play the accompaniment (on piano) and my daughter could hear a master play the piece on violin. We listened to 3 different recordings, and this was our favorite by far. The concerto was played at a great tempo with just the right amount of vibrato.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable CD at great price.......2007-02-08

Bought this CD to round out a larger order and was happily surprised with both the quality of this CD, the beauty of the music, and the great price. Very nice buy!

5 out of 5 stars The premier rendition of these classics.......2007-02-06

If you love Bach, you must buy this album. The quality of the performance and the recording is superb, and the price is certainly right.

2 out of 5 stars Sounds drunken.......2006-12-16

I know that this recording is very beloved in classical music circles, but I do not like it at all. It is slow, meandering, and sounds drunk. I feel sad to say this, because I know that Perlman is prodigiously talented.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Premier Bach Series Recording.......2007-03-26

I purchased these recordings nearly 20 years ago, when Deutsche Gramophone was still selling them as five individual discs, and at over $20 per disc. With the re-release of the set of all five discs in a single, price-reduced "Collectors Edition" box set, the price has fallen by more than half, making this one of the outstanding values for high-quality Bach recordings on today's market.

But what about the performances? Here's the best way I can sum it up. Having listened to these disks for some two decades, in the car, on the main home stereo system, on portable equipment, on the boom box, and etc., etc., it is, I imagine, inevitable that one ends up memorizing nearly every note. And with that familiarity comes the ability to detect flaws in the performance, missteps, missed beats, the occasional off-tone instrument. Here's the rub: it is difficult to locate any significant flaw in the performances. These performances are about as perfect as one can get, but having said that, there is more. The sound reproduction of this recording remains near or at the top of any Bach recordings with which I've become familiar, and remains in my own thinking the de facto standard by which other performances should be measured.

Sound too good to be true? Pick up a set and see for yourself. And then relish the thought that you paid $40 for a set worth far more.

5 out of 5 stars A nice way to complete your collection of Bach's concertos..........2007-02-21

...and cheap to boot. This, paired with the Brandenburg Concertos/Overtures compilation from Arkiv (also featuring Pinnock and the English Concert), gives any new Bach fan a fairly complete account of Bach's instrumental orchestral output. This particular package includes all of Bach's keyboard concertos (played exceptionally well by Pinnock), all of his violin concertos, and also his Triple Concerto (Harpsicord, Flute and Violin), several works for Oboe and Oboe D'Amour, and several double concertos (2 violins, and oboe and violin). Highlights are the D Minor Harpsicord concerto BWV 1052, the C Major concerto for 2 Harpsicords BWV 1061, the Oboe D'Amour concerto BWV 1055, the double concerto BWV 1060, and the violin concertos.
This set sounds fantastic and is a great value to boot. Strongly recommended for those who loved Bach's Bradenburg concertos and Overtures and are looking for something new to sink their teeth into.

5 out of 5 stars "Best Bach - Box Set".......2005-11-06

This is undoubtedly the best Back box set I have heard. These Concerto's for Harsichord, Violin, Flute and Oboe are among the finest in classical music. Although the Harpsichord volume level could have been a bit higher overall the recordings are very good. I am very pleased with this CD set with so much music at a very good price. This is truly a collectors gem.

4 out of 5 stars Pinnock is good performer.......2005-09-30

Pinnock is good performer...I drop one start because BWV 1052-58
Might sound better when it's played piano.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable Value.......2004-12-15

This set offers unbeatable value. The performances are uniformly excellent. Pinnock's Bach is brisk and sprightly when it should be, but also tender and relaxed when it must be. He is not afraid to slow down and savour the music, unlike many period-performance specialists. He is one of the world's great harpsichordists and his partners in the multiple concerti are also excellent. Simon Standage yields nothing to better-known soloists in the violin concerti.

The sound is clear, deep, and only a little bit on the bright side.

While you're at it, buy the Pinnock/English Concert complete Mozart symphonies. Sure, Mozart's first fifteen or so aren't anything special, but the set is superb and the price unbelievable.

Hilary Hahn is certainly one of the best young violinists before the public. Now 23 years old, she has abundantly fulfilled her early promise as a radiantly talented as well as singularly earnest prodigy, and grown into a brilliant violinist and a communicative, arresting performer. On this recording, which features Bach's Violin Concertos in A minor, BWV 1041 and E major, BWV 1042, as well as the Concerto for two violins in D minor, BWV 1043 and the Concerto for violin and oboe in C minor, BWV 1060, her flawless technique and strikingly beautiful, intensely focussed tone are on full display. There is a noble, restrained quality in her playing, so that although her tone-production and vibrato are "modern," her sound has a classical, pristine purity. (By contrast, the orchestral sound, though good, is surprisingly lush - a rather odd discrepancy.) Hahn's interplay with her two excellent partners is close and unanimous in tone and style; the less familiar Concerto for violin and oboe is especially compelling. Unfortunately, Hilary Hahn, despite her serious, thoughtful approach to music, seems to have succumbed to the current trend among today's performers--perhaps symptomatic of the jet-age--to play as fast as their fingers will carry them. The fast movements are taken at such speeds that they lose all their elegance, grace and charm, become prone to false accents, and sound aggressive, hectic and breathless. A performer with less musical integrity might be suspected of just wanting to show off her effortless facility. However, Hahn's musicality, expressiveness and affinity for Bach (she has also recorded the unaccompanied solo violin works on Sony) come through in the slow movements, where the playing is calm, expansive enough for carefully shaped phrases, emotionally concentrated, and simply beautiful. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Angelic. .......2007-04-30

When Hilary picks up her bow, the Angels fall silent and listen.

I don't know a whole lot about music, but I do know pure beauty when I hear it, and I own 5 of this delightful young ladies CDs, and this is simply the most beautifal. If you have any taste for classical music, and my collection runs from Guns an Rose to Beethoven, you will love this album. :) Brightest Blessings Hilary, BB.

3 out of 5 stars Will You Hurry Up Already?.......2007-04-26

Like other reviewers, I agree this is way to fast. It's as if, she is just trying to get through these pieces as fast as she can. Like it's like hurry up this is boring, as if she would rather be doing something else. I know that's not what she intended, but to my ears that's what it sounds like. This is the 4th Hilary Hahn CD, that I have purchased. I've liked most of her CD's, but as a result of this recording am beginning to doubt her interpretation of many of these pieces. Like many other reviewers I am not an expert by any means, but I am thinking that being as young as she is affects her interpretation of the music. Maybe I will change my mind later, and maybe I am just used to hearing Bach a certain way who knows? To sum up my feelings, I will say she is an amazing violinist with huge potential, but like any fine wine needs time to mature. Time will tell for me, and maybe for her as well, but for now 3 stars is my verdict.

5 out of 5 stars Addicted .......2007-01-24

I don't really know a whole lot about classical music but I came across Miss Hahn's music when I was searching for something to study by. Personally, I find her music addictive and I never get sick of listening to her. I have since experimented with the notion of why I like her so much by comparing her music with other interpretations of the same pieces from Bach and have really come to appreciate her style. Clean, crisp and fresh. A really, really, wonderful violinist!

2 out of 5 stars No groove.......2007-01-20

Some of the other reviewers on this site have made the same comment: that this is too fast. However, the negative reviewers all either sounded like idiots or like snobs with lines like "she misses the poetry of the music". I don't listen to Bach for poetry (what does that even mean?). Bach has groove, and I listen to Bach cause he's got the Groove. And so I thought I'd like it peppy. I usually do. For example, I like Glenn Gould's early recording of the Goldberg Variations, which has also been criticized for being too fast.

But, I didn't like this. At all. I'm not sure if the root of the problem is that it's too fast, but the result is that it's definitely not musical. No groove at all. Even if you liked Hahn's solo Bach, skip this recording. It's really not worth it, even at $9.99. (If you're wondering, one star is for good pitch, and the other is for the slow movement of the Concerto for 2 violins.)

If you want a good recording of the same music, get the 2006 recording of Akiko Suwanai and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. It's got groove and beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Too fast? - let your own ears decide........2006-11-11

I don't mean to purposely stand in contradiction against other reviews; I just felt it was unfair for me to be almost robbed of the musical enjoyment I am having now with this recording, and I want to present another view.

I remember being really inspired when I first saw a video of Hilary Hahn playing the Bach Concerto. However, I was surprised to see so many criticisms regarding the tempo when I went to check out the CD here on amazon.com.

It made me really hesitant about buying the CD. But I found out that it proved to be a mistake for me to be held back into buying this CD because of these criticisms.

I am not a student of classical music nor do I consider myself to be an expert on music criticism; so I do not really know if there is such a thing as a "wrong" tempo in classical music.

Hilary Hahn has written in the linear notes regarding how she wanted this piece to be lively and to inspire others to dance to the fast movements. This reflects her personality and I think she has succeeded in achieving that vision. As far as her own musical vision is concerned, I don't think anyone can say she missed it or contradicted herself.

I own this CD for some time now and I have been listening to it enough to say that the tempo is not an issue for me. I think Hilary pulled it off nicely. I have gone out to listen to other interpretations, but I eventually found Hilary Hahn's and Oistrakh's interpretations to be my favorites. (Grumiaux's interpretation also comes close - do check it out!) The tone and execution really shines - Everything fits together beautifully like a well-crafted piece of furniture. There is evidence of tremendous thought into the phrasing, but when you are listening to the music, all that disappears, you just know Hilary really enjoyed herself while playing this piece. It is inspiring.

I am not discrediting the other reviews and the opinions of others - they have a valid opinion and they are entitled to it. All I'm saying is this: do listen to it before you buy this CD and make a judgment for yourself. Do not rob yourself of the joy of enjoying music that YOU like.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly........2003-09-20

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

5 out of 5 stars A must have album!.......2001-09-17

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

5 out of 5 stars Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-10-26

I have heard many, many recordings of these peices and this recording shines through to be the best. I originally got this cd at the library being relativly new to Mr. Perlman's work. Anyhow, once I put this in my cd player I was astounded to hear such great clarity between soloist and orchestra. A wonderful buy, and when you think you've had a treat with the double violin concertos, just wait for the splendid oboe performance by Mr. Still.

5 out of 5 stars Music-making of the First Rank..........2005-04-18

This album still delights after more than three decades. Arthur Grumiaux's brilliant tone and technical acumen are ideally suited to these concerti. These performances predate the advent of period-instrument interpretation that dominates current recordings of baroque music, but the present offerings cannot be said to be romanticized nor "mushy" versions. The tempi are uniformly well-judged and delivered with verve and momentum, in contrast to the many stodgy, plodding interpretations of these works. The double violin concerto also features great interplay and rapport between Grumiaux and Hermann Krebbers, an artist of the top order in his own right. The Largo movement is particularly fine, revealing Bach in a rarely-equalled lyrical dimension. The concerto for violin and oboe is also delightful, showcasing both soloists (the celebrated Heinz Holliger playing reed) in top form and in full sympathy. The sound throughout is rich and round but with Philips' characteristic clean and clear high-end sonics. I owned this album as an LP years ago, and have kept a slot for it on my CD rack for twenty years. There is a good reason why it still in the catalog. It is simply music of surpassing quality---and an exceptional value to boot...

4 out of 5 stars Here it is.......2001-04-14

There isn't anything extraordinary to say about this set of Bach violin concertos. For what they are, classicized performances, they are fine in tempi and polished elegance. Nothing dazzles about it. However, the orchestral sound is rich, and Grumiaux, as usual, sings with his violin playing. As a typically interpretated performance, this recording is a fine disc.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Musical!.......2001-04-08

I was wonderfully surprised to have been able to locate this recording on CD format - it's incredibly musical, delicate, strong and melodic! Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Bland.......2001-04-05

Having recently been disappointed by a recently-purchased CD of Bach violin sonatas by the same peformer, I was interested to read the reviews of and listen to some samples from this CD. I have to agree with the first reviewer's opinion that the interest and excitement of these pieces is lost in these performances. The second movement of BWV 1041, in particular, is one of the most sublime compositions I have heard. It should sound strong and vibrant, driven by the basso ostinato. Here, it sounds romantically vague and mushy.

Using original style instruments and smaller numbers of instruments helps. The benchmark recording for me is an old vinyl LP I own which was produced on the Das Alte Werke label.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2000-11-17

As a violinist, I am currently working on the Bach A minor. I got this CD hoping that it would help me out a bit. Well, I was very disappointed. The expression and interpretation is bland, and though I know this is a wonderful concerto, I wouldn't have guessed it from this recording.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's well known that most of Bach's harpsichord concertos began their lives as violin concertos. Since only three violin originals survive--the ones designated as BWV 1041-43--and since these are among his greatest instrumental works, musical scholars and performers have been reversing the process, turning the harpsichord concertos back into violin originals. BWV 1060 is one such case, a concerto for two harpsichords, which sounds much less clangy and bangy in this reconstructed version for two violins. Now Andrew Manze is simply the finest baroque violinist alive, and so this recording is self-recommending on that count alone. It's just about perfect. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Bach CDs available.......2007-03-03

Don't believe the bad reviews. This is one of the most stunningly beautiful versions of these Bach concertos ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2006-11-01

Wow, so much hatred from the highly edjoo-cated classicahl moozik snobs! IMHO, the purpose of art is to move the soul. That being the case, it doesn't matter if recording is good, any more than it matters whether your radio reception is good. I also don't believe that there is a "right" or "wrong" way to interpret a piece of music, any more than there is a "correct" amount of cheese to grate into your pasta. Go with what makes you happy, eh?

I think this CD is lots of fun, and is light and passionate. It puts me in a good mood. My SO was recently diagnosed with cancer, and I thusly turned off my car radio from war news and pulled out my favorite CDs to accompany my commute instead.

What made me smile again? Listening to this recording of Bach. Over and over. It sounds like how honey water tastes. Mmm lovely!

3 out of 5 stars Bach on speed.......2006-06-20

If you dislike the brutal articulation of Andrew Manze, the lack of sensitivity in his athletic speed, I recommend you to go for another, less sensational fiddler, also he original instruments and I bet much better historically informed: Sigiswald Kuijken.
His unmannered and stylish performances you'll find by searching Amazon: Johann Sebastian Bach: Violin Concertos, BWV 1041-1043 - Sigiswald Kuijen / La Petite Bande.

5 out of 5 stars right key.......2006-05-10

I need to correct some earlier reviews which state that, due to this recorded performance being played at a different pitch to the norm (a semitone lower or thereabouts), it is somehow played at the wrong tuning.

From my enthusiastic layman's knowledge of period instrument performance, I know that, in the 17th, 18th centuries, etc, pitch had not been standardised at what current pitching is accepted as. Indeed, accepted pitch varied geographically.

I hazard that Andrew Manze et al have spent some considerable thought about which historically accurate pitch to tune their instruments to for this recording and, as a result of their scholarly and artistic superiority to the rest of us (otherwise WE'D be playing rather than listening), are probably much closer to what Bach 'intended' (as if Bach would object to varying interpretations even in his own day???) than some of the less informed reviews suppose.

I for one adore Grumiaux (especially in his earlier ECO [not Swiss] performances - much more vital and less romantic) in this repertoire. But Manze is a superb addition all the same, could be one of the very finest performances I've heard of these works. I recommend this without reservation, but not instead of the classic performances in this repertoire.

I hazard that this will eventually be considered a 'classic' interpretation - the key it's played in suits me fine, and the playing is accurate, wonderfully pacey and incisive, and with that beauty of line only found in a small handful of recorded performances.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong Key.......2006-01-16

I wouldn't say that this CD is the best... it's the worst! Don't buy it. The whole CD was played in the wrong key. Everything was played half-step lower.

4 out of 5 stars Convincing Bach Violin Performance.......2005-09-27

Stern is certainly to be revered as great violin virtuoso, whether on this recording or not is question.

My humble listening tells me that the first two offerings, A minor and E major Violin Concertos are a bit lackluster and scratchy, and as another review points out, even at bits sound a bit off.

However, for me the final two are magnificent. The final two movements of the Double Violin Concerto are superb, with Perlman and Mehta ringing in with gusto and passion. Gomberg as well does his part in making the oboe and violin concerto a triumph, with lilting, rich phrasing and clear tonality. Truly is a great soloist, and the third movement is outstanding!

3 out of 5 stars Isaac Stern played this well.......2002-09-17

I found Gidon Kremer's version of the concerto in A minor to be much better. He blitzed through it brilliantly. Stern on the other hand played that concerto like a beginner, as if unsure of himself, and I think did himself and his abilities grave injustice. Maybe it's because I was expecting great stuff from him I was disappointed.
He and Perlman play the double concerto rather well though.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2002-04-18

Beautifully done.
Isaac Stern was simply the master of his art. As an artist myself, I found the music powerful, and it touches my heart. Appreciating music, I would not analyze it too much, simply enjoy. Let the musicans reach out and touch your hearts as well.

3 out of 5 stars Isaac Stern - A Life in Music - Bach: Violin concertos.......2000-02-26

These recordings are OK. In the first two recordings, I found Stern scratchy and off-key (probably because they were bothe done the same day), however I found the second two refreshing and well-performed! In the Double Concerto, Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman give a well-done recording with beautiful effects! It all begins with a fast, 3-minute violin piece, then it goes into the beautiful middle movement of the piece (in Largo ma non Tanto)---this is probably the most beautiful piece ever written (or performed)--- it all ends with another 3-minute violin piece which is also well-done! The violin-oboe concerto in C-major (which is conducted by Leonard Bernstein) is extrememly well-performed and clear, however it does not posses the virtuoso that the other three do. I suggest this one with, Bach: Violin concertos with Pinchas Zukerman and Jose-Luis Garcia!

4 out of 5 stars Recommended.......1999-12-23

If you're not a great lover of authentic baroque performance, then this CD is the best choice. Stern's violin is clear and beautiful. The orchestra plays just right - not too loud, but still present - unlike Grumiaux's famous version for Philips, which I find quite lame.
