A forgotten masterpiece.......2003-04-11

Most revivals on disk of music by forgotten composers are disappointing. They were forgotten for a reason. This is an exception. The Misa Scala Aretina by Valls is a work of exceptional quality, comparable to the best church music by Mozart and Bach. Good performance too.

The mass is written on the 6 note scale of Guido d'Arezzo, not a very promising theme, one would have thought, but it certainly works. It also used dissonances which were regarded as unacceptable according to the conventions of the time and led to a Europe-wide controversy.

Valls wrote many other masses, but only the Misa Scala Aretina remained in the repertory during the 18th Century. If his other works compare in quality to this one, it is to be hoped that they too will be revived. Valls apparently wrote a further mass on the Scala Aretina twoards the end of his life - the Misa Regalis.

The Requiem by Biber is also a very pleasing work.

yet another great Savall sampler.......2005-12-20

Having purchased hundreds of dollars worth of Savall's CD's, I can say I too am a devoted fan of his. This is a great sampler of his more recent work and contains a huge variety of music. The individual pieces sound great and, as usual, the tone quality and spirit of his ensembles are perfect. If you are looking for a nice album of "early music," are interested in checking out Jordi Savall's work, or are already a Savall fan looking for a nice album to relax to, this inexpensive compilation is for you. It also comes with a color catalog of Alia Vox's current offerings.

WOW - my two year old started doing ballet while listening.......2005-06-28

Which is, of course, another story. But she liked the music. My wife insisted I not sell our copy (which I had no intention of doing). I even played it very loud and no one minded!

I am a Jordi Savall fan, so I saw this sampler of his stuff for such a great price and bought it. It has a nice variety - beautiful vocals, mostly nice instrumental pieces, but all very nice. Even the one (?) opera sounding piece was nice (and I don't like opera).

Anyway - for the price how can you go wrong? Read some of Jordi's other reviews and then jump on it! (Just my opinion)

I haven't heard this recording; I just wanted to give to something to boost its rating because obviously the other reviewer was writing a review of amazon's search engine and not this recording. I really don't know what rating it deserves, but seeing a recording w/ Wunderlich on it that gets one star just seems wrong.

Oddly enough, Amazon's search engine brought me here when I was searching for "Blue Man Group"....unfortunately, the closest we get is the Blue Danube. Wonderful though it might be, it's NOT Blue Man Group.

Let me reiterate, there is NO Blue Man Group at all on this CD. Not even one track. None. Niente. Nada.

Heck, they aren't even Austrian. Or Australian, for that matter.

Good search engine, Amazon. Way to go.

This Requiem comes from an old period like some ancestor to what we will call a Requiem a few decades later. It is not fully developed as we know today from the « models » by Mozart, Verdi or Berlioz. This Requiem is a sequence of pieces that were performed within a religious service for a dead person. This Requiem was composed for the Salzburg cathedral and the four galleries around the crossing. This fact enabled the composer to distribute his singers and instruments around this crossing, hence to give some autonomy to each group : the soloists, the brass, the choir and the violins and other instruments. This gave the composer some constraints but also some possibilities. The general atmosphere created in this Requiem is that of pomp for the burial of an important person. Biber uses all the technique of the nascent baroque age to amplify this pomp with grace and beauty. The voices are beautiful and beautifully entertwined into a whole that is very attractive. Contrast and complementarity are the main characteristics of these voices. The brass and violins are also very effectively used. Yet this Requiem does not reach the fully developed form a Requiem will reach later. And at times we are surprised by the rhythm or coloration of some pieces. The Kyrie is very slow and definitely not clear and joyous. The Dies Irae is also very pompous and does not entirely express the power of death and God. We can even think that the last piece, the Lux aeterna, does not reach the light and joy that are found beyond death. Yet this Requiem is essential to understand the emergence of the genre in baroque music, a genre that will only find its completeness in later ages, particularly in the nineteenth century, and even the twentieth century. It is in a way archeology more than a master piece.

An Excellent Early Modern Requiem Mass.......2006-04-10

This program, a "celebration" of the 300th anniversary of the death of 17th century German composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644 - 1704), contains two Biber works and a number of smaller pieces from contemporaries such as Schmeltzer and di Lasso. "In the midst of life, we are in death" is the basis for this program, intended to illustrate the early modern pre-occupation with life and death in the wake of the Thirty Years War.

The listener is invitation to compare and contrast Biber's Mass in B and Requiem in F minor. The Mass, we are advised, was likely written for a smaller village church, while the Requiem appears to have been designed for performance in Salzburg Cathedral.

Of the two, the Requiem is a much more compelling and involving work. The harmonies, varied and rich, along with the instrumentation, I simply found to be of much higher order and complexity.

More people should set aside an hour to hear this timeless and ageless 17th century music - written long before the harried, stressful pace of our 21st century "McWorld" - and allow themselves the luxury of a trip backwards in time to a world lit only by fire. I also wouldn't hesitate to buy this disc if you are looking for great examples of early modern German liturgical music performed by perhaps the best "historically informed" ensemble currently in the business. Overall, the disc must be considered another "win" for musical historian Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort. Recorded at the Tonbridge School Chapel in Kent and making use of an organ modeled after a 17th century Italian chamber organ from Lucca, sound quality is very good, with vocal clarity and a realistic bass result.

2 little known masterpieces.......2002-08-01

The Missa Scala Aretina by Valls is the great masterpiece of the Spanish Baroque, a work of comparable stature to the church music of Bach and Mozart. It does not sound promising to base a work on the 6 note scale of Guido d'Arezzo but it succeeds magnificently. Valls is a specialist in the use of imaginative dissonances which gave rise to considerable controversy at the time.

Valls apparently wrote many other Masses, including towards the end of his life, a second Mass on the same theme, the Missa Regalis. Are these as good as the Aretina? If so why are they still lying undiscovered and unperformed in a library in Barcelona?

The Requiem by Biber is also of considerable musical interest and the performance of both works is up to Leonhardt's usual standards.
