Casal's recording of Max Bruch's impassioned Kol Nidrei, sub-titled Adagio on Hebrew Themes, was made in 1936 London, as was Casal's account of the Elgar Cello Concerto, made at the end of 1945 with another great survivor, Sir Adrian Boult. Together they created one of the finest accounts of this great concerto to be committed to disc, a performance that perfectly illustrates Casals' famous comment that ''music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic thing to the heart''. Amazon.com essential recording
During her far-too-brief career, cellist Jacqueline du Pré exhibited an almost oracular power of communication. Her performances bristled with the kind of brilliant electricity that could change lives and convert listeners to a lifelong love of music. Happily, it's possible to experience a sense of that power from the recordings du Pré completed before multiple sclerosis halted her career as a performer in the early 1970s. This set provides a splendid portrait--at bargain price--of du Pré's unmistakable personality: the astonishingly original yet convincing phrasing, raw energy, and ability to make her instrument sound uncannily like a human voice (du Pré was after all a favored student of Mstislav Rostropovich). Her rendition of Haydn's Concerto in C is clearly cast in a romantic--and nowadays perhaps unfashionable--mold, yet du Pré's big, bold tone carries the musical line forward with exhilarating presence. It's a demeanor that proves especially reassuring for the quirkily mercurial inventions of Boccherini. Yet du Pré most indelibly leaves her signature on the work that became her hallmark, Edward Elgar's E Minor Concerto, grafting a deeply personal level of expression onto the score's rich post-World War I melancholy. In the Schumann, du Pré makes an eloquently passionate protagonist. A similar sense of excitement is to be heard in Dvorák's Concerto--performed near the end of her career--above all in the flame of inspiration she evidently sparks from the orchestra in the serene close of its slow movement. This is a supremely rewarding collection for the beginner and aficionado alike. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
Beutefully interpretted.......2007-04-04
I THOUGHT I had heard these concertos,,,.......2007-04-04
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful
interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!"
Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the separation and clarity of both the soloist's and orchestral performances. The overall dynanism is also top notch - I found I had to lower the volume substantially from my normal
system loudness levels.
I've enjoyed this set so much I'll probably wind up buying everything from Amazon that EMI has produced with Jacqueline du Pre's name on it!
Excellent Selection.......2007-02-27
The album is a fitting tribute to the tragic loss of an incredible young talent.
A sassy dame.......2007-02-20
While Dvorak is currently my favourite, other composers featured here have been growing on me.
Never been a Cello devotee in the past, but I am enjoying this new phase of my musical listening.
The late Ms du Pre plays with vigor and assertiveness, yet manages to convey those moving and sublime moments when needed.
Most enjoyable. Thanky you

An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13
Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).
This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.
Better than a dab of Imperial margarine.......2001-03-01
The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

One of the better Slava recordings, but not the best.......2007-05-29
The recording quality is also excellent (analogue stereo, from 1978 - very fine CD transfer), and so is the orchestral playing (London Philharmonic Orchestra in top form).
Now there is a bunch of other recordings with Slava and the Dvorák concerto. For example, we have three other stereo recordings, one with von Karajan (DG); one with Ozawa (Erato); and an early one with Boult (Testament). Further, there are four mono recordings, with Khaikin (Revelation/Yedang); with Talich (Supraphon) which was Slava's first recording of this concerto; the famous 1968 concert with Svetlanov (BBC Legends, live) and, finally, with Ancerl in Toronto (Tahra, live).
How does the present recording stand in comparison with these other recordings? In the von Karajan case, cellist and conductor are worlds apart, but both sound and playing are fine. Ozawa's interpretation is not entirely convincing, lacking in Bohemian temperament, but the recording and playing are fine here too. Boult, finally, has vintage stereo sound but in terms of interpretational quality it is second to none. Khaikin and Talich are both of great interest. But in my view, Slava's first recording with Talich holds a special place, because it simply outstanding in all respects: playing and interpretation are first class. Yes, it is a mono recording, but that's fine with me. Khaikin's recording is very fine too, even if the interpretation is a bit less convincing than Talich's, partly due to the eccentric Soviet playing style in the late fifties. Svetlanov's live recording is also a memorable moment, and so is Ancerl's 1972 Toronto broadcast - which boasts two outstanding artists in exile. Slava's playing is excellent in both, but the orchestral execution is not entirely spotless. Nonetheless, the two orchestras give their very best.
In sum, then, I rank the eight Slava-Dvorák recordings as follows: I. Boult (because of the better sound), 2. Talich, 3. Ancerl, 4. Svetlanov, 5. Khaikin, 6. Giulini, 7. Ozawa, 8. Karajan.
Thus this is one of the best Slava STEREO recordings of the Dvorák concerto, second to Slava/Boult, which is my prime recommendation. But check Talich if you look for an equally arresting Slava interpretation with - perhaps - ideal accompaniment. Moreover, if sound is not an important issue, Slava's mono recordings with Ancerl, Svetlanov and Khaikin are all better than Slava/Giulini. And then there are of course other great cellists to consider: Fournier (DG), and Casals/Szell (Naxos, EMI, Dutton). My advice is that you should have at least one of these too.
Puts a smile on my face.......2007-01-23
Unbelievable Performance.......2004-07-12
Again, I can not express how towering a piece of work the Dvorak is, and how successfully Giulini's London Philharmonic is in performing it. The charming lyrical melodies loom over the tremendously powerful opening movement. The second movement is deeply felt, with its sudden outburst of emotion 3+ minutes in, immediately followed by a romantic melody giving tribute to Dvorak's much loved sister-in-law in ailing health. The 3rd movement, also very moving, uses a triangle and solo violin to create even more emotional effects, with more nostalgic moments for the sister-in-law, who has now died.
The Saint-Saens is a personal favorite of Slava. A fine masterpiece to create a great coupling with the Dvorak.
This disc is a moment of musical history. Highly reccomended. Of course, you should also eventually own Slava's other recordings as well, and don't forget to look into Jacqueline de Pre either.
A too-often overlooked gem.......2003-12-01
Some have commented that the first movement of the Dvorak is marginally slower than the Karajan recording, and this reduces its dramatic impact. But while this is perhaps true, this approach instead highlights its lyrical qualities. Giulini is much more successful than Karajan in bringing out Dvorak's folk music influence. Giulini is best known as an opera conductor, and I'm sure his experience with singing allowed him to better express the concerto's lyricism. The result is a very moving interpretation, one which I think has a much better blend of drama and lyricism than does Karajan's recording.
Secondly, Rostropovich's playing is impeccable. In fact, I think I like him better here than in the Karajan recording. His tone and pitch are suburb, like they are in nearly all his recordings. But the extra space Giulini gives him by slowing down the tempi allows Rostropovich to explore the music a bit more, adding his own unique interpretations to the concertos, often with riveting results. The middle of the third movement of the Dvorak is a case in point. Rostropovich's playing is simply so musical, so fantastically beautiful that one cannot but marvel.
In short, this recording deserves every ounce of praise now being bestowed upon it. It is a great buy for anyone who likes Dvorak, Giulini, Rostropovich or cello music in general. I would strongly recommend that you buy both this recording and Karajan's, so that you can hear two very different interpretations, and see how each emphasizes a different aspect of the music. Both are wonderful, and the subordinate position this recording has endured is unjustifiable.
Underrated Great Performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto.......2002-11-30

Virtuosic Trumpet: Baroque And Classical Showcase.......2004-02-22
The cd opens with the Trumpet Concerto In E Flat Major by Johann Hummel. This colorful piece is particularily impressive as it really explores the dynamic potential for the trumpet. It's third movement, the Rondo, is very exciting music, as it is played very fast and in a bouncy, dance-like manner. The Trumpet Concerto by Stamitz, Hertel and Richter are very stylish and must have been highly admired in the Baroque Era. The Trumpet concerto in E by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced Mozart, is beautiful, especially in its serenade-style andante second movement. In the last cd, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto is featured, and it's a good work. Perhaps his son Mozart greatly admired it, though Mozart did'nt really expand on trumpet concerti himself nor really ever showcased the instrument greatly. There are trumpet arrangements for the famous Albinoni Adagio in G, which on this version, sounds chilling, dark and dramatic. The cd concludes with trumpet versions of Bach's Organ Preludes and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.

The Best Trumpeter in the Business.......2003-05-25
Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, Hertel, and Stamitz trumpet concertos, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, on Philips) in 1986 when he was only 25 years old (in the cover photo of the original CD he looks like a boy). The first time I played this debut CD of his, my jaw dropped and I could hardly believe my ears. His playing was a revelation--absolutely stunning. I'd never heard trumpet playing to compare with it. In my opinion, with his first two CDs young Hardenberger not only moved into the top rank of trumpeters; he swept right past his competitors to the head of the class. I've compared a number of his baroque concerto performances, here and elsewhere, with those of other famous trumpeters, and he always comes out on top. I believe him to be in a league of his own. He has everything: virtuosity and technique to burn, dead-on intonation, clean trills, smooth legato, expressive shading, beauty of tone, brilliant high notes, enormous dynamic range. He is also a sound musician, with taste and a sense of style. His arsenal is complete and unassailable; there is no chink in his armor.
Everything that was on that debut CD is now in this Philips Duo set, which is a much better value, because it offers two generously filled CDs--72:55 and 78:27--for the price of one, adding most of the contents of two later Hardenberger CDs of baroque music for trumpet (the recordings here were made from 1986 through 1993). It's a good buy, and if you're going to own only one collection of baroque trumpet music, this is the one I'd recommend.
The trumpet has always been a difficult instrument to record and reproduce accurately. Here, although the consistently excellent digital recording presents Hardenberger very much front and center, it captures the timbre, "bite," and wide dynamic range of his trumpet with exemplary vividness and fidelity. On a top-quality playback system, he sounds like he's standing right between the speakers playing for you. And what playing it is! Not to be missed.
Hardenberger's second CD, of Telemann Trumpet Concertos, also accompanied by the ASMF, this time under Iona Brown, was recorded in 1987 (again on Philips). It too is marvelous, fully as impressive as his first CD, but unfortunately none of it is included in the Philips Duo reviewed here, so you have to acquire it separately. It's well worth it.
Long live the king!
Virtuosic... Incredible.......2001-08-06
A non-trumpet player's view..........2001-02-12
The current reviewed recording, on the other hand, is quite a piece of gem. Even though I have never heard of Hardenberger before (you trumpet players out there please excuse my ignorance), he delivers precisely what I am looking for. Hardenberger has the centered tone that most trumpeters would envy, yet he lacked none of the technical virtuosity needed for the music. His vibrato is light and very classical (as opposed to the wider jazz vibrato). On top of all that, he shows much understanding and affinity for the various works on these two CDs.
All of this for the price of 1 CD. An excellent introduction to the core trumpet repertoire.

Claudio Arrau played with seriousness of purpose that could make other pianists seem like dilettantes and with respect for the composer's score that bordered on veneration. He had nothing but scorn for pianists who played the opening of Beethoven's Opus 111 with two hands instead of one because there were fewer risks. If something was technically difficult, Arrau assumed that the composer had written it that way because the difficulties had an expressive value that it was the interpreter's duty to find.Arrau's devotion to Beethoven is memorialized by this budget-priced, 14-CD collection of his recordings, mostly from the 1960s, of the composer's 32 sonatas, five concertos (with Bernard Haitink conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam), and most important sets of variations. His Beethoven is not always successful. His sometimes ponderous seriousness keeps early works, such as the Sonata No. 3 and the Concerto No. 2, from smiling, and his lack of spontaneity makes the whimsy in Sonata No. 26 and the "Diabelli Variations" sound labored. But in the composer's weightiest works, Arrau can produce revelations. Certainly, no one plays Sonata No. 32 better. The first movement sounds like thunder that comes ever closer and the finale's chains of trills, played with exquisite finish and expressive perfection, transport the listener to a higher realm. If Arrau could be single-minded in his devotion to the composer's score, he also believed that music could encompass everything. When Arrau was at his best--as he frequently is in this set--it does. --Stephen Wigler

The one collection I cannot imagine being without.......2007-01-30
They are flaws which can be forgiven. Scherzi which would be brimming with mirth & vitality in the hands of others may come up short, but it is more than compensated for by the revelations to be found as Arrau explores every aspect of Beethoven at his most profound. There always seems to be something new to be discovered. Flabby? It is hard to imagine how someone could come to this conclusion.
Even the sound quality for recordings dating back into the 1960's has been remastered so as to be acceptable to all but the most spoiled of listeners, who apparently are satisfied only with the most seamless homogenized studio sound. Those who can't get past the slightly imperfect sound quality are focusing on the wrong details.
If the greatness of the performance were not enough, the price should be enough to convince any serious music lover to add these to a CD collection. One cannot overstate how rewarding this collection will be to anyone who does not yet know the artistry of Arrau.

Magisterial... mystical.......2006-11-03
Arrau describes Beethoven's greatness in his essay "Thoughts on Beethoven" in the 33 1/3 Philips LP edition. "Beethoven has always stood for the spirit of man victorious. His message of endless stuggle concluding in the victory of renewal and spiritual rebirth...his life was an existential fight for survival...In the sense that he mastered both his life and his art to reach the ultimate heights of creation and transfiguration, he will last as long as man's spirit to prevail lasts on this earth." Part of the greatness of Beethoven's character came from his ability to be intimately close and at the same time at an infinite distance above his listener. Arrau possesses this same character, and his qualities as a man and artist are why he is able to so aptly render the greatness of Beethoven.
A book titled "Conversations with Arrau" was written by Joseph Horowitz to celebrate the artists's 80th birthday in 1982. I've only read the extracts published with the Philips edition, but there is enough information to get a feel for Arrau's character. He guarded the purity of his environment. He shunned parties and avoided small talk. He never drank or smoked, never learned to drive a car, boil an egg, or even operate a phonograph. His only hobby was gardening. Horowitz describes him as the embodiment of the nineteenth-century model of the artist as solitary, suffering hero. He was small (5'6") and frail, but in 1982 at age 80 he was still playing more that 70 concerts a season.
Rather than launch a discussion of his individual works (this has been done admirably by many of the reviewers) I will remark on just a few. I never properly appreciated the Fourth and the Seventh Sonatas until I heard Arrau's reading of these works. His Fourth takes 31 minutes, 30 seconds. Annie Fischer, another great interpreter of Beethoven, plays it in 27 minutes, 30 seconds. And Ms. Fischer does not play at a hurried tempo.
Yes, Arrau plays the sonatas at a slower tempo than any other interpreter. He also achieves a mystical quality in his interpretations that is unmatched. The second movement of the Seventh comes in at 10 min, 30 seconds. It is the greatest 10 1/2 minutes of piano music ever conceived. When interpreted by Arrau it becomes a microcosm of Beethoven's life and work. The second movement of the Appassionata is a sacred hymn.
Arrau's five piano concertos are splendid. I've heard no other renditions of the concertos with slow movements that equal Arrau's. No one plays the middle movements with his expressiveness and sense of the numinous. And his rendition of the "Eroica Variations" is on a par with the top few recordings of this piece.
If you have any interest in Beethoven, at whatever level, this bargain is outstanding.
Beethoven + Arrau = Divinity.......2006-10-29
Though some will likely disagree, I have listened to many other great pianists' recordings of Beethoven sonatas, and they are great (don't get me wrong). Yet Arrau is unique in his ability to bring to light subtleties in the melodies that no one else can, and these often turn out to be the most enlightening and resonant of passages. His Op. 111 is indeed unparalleled, and his recording of the 2nd movement is one of my favorite pieces in the world. On top of that, his rendition of the Moonlight Sonata, his Waldstein, his Concertos, every recording on this boxed set is a testament to the depth Arrau worked diligently and consciously to achieve; depth that transcends technical showmanship and for the intuitive listener can certainly elicit fleeting glimpses of divine ecstasy.
At any price, it's a steal - beauty of this magnitude is all too rare.

Violin Concerto #3, Opus 61.......2006-08-04
Lyrical concerto masterpieces.......2005-11-27
Yo-Yo Ma gives an excellent rendition of the Cello Concerto No. 1, exhibiting great technical virtuosity as well as musicality. Comparatively few composers write for the cello than, say, the piano or violin; so if you like the sound of the cello this concerto is a must!
The Piano Concerto No. 2 as performed by Cecile Licad with the London Philharmonic and André Previn can be best described as "sparkling." Even the dark, dramatic first movement has a certain lightness to it. This concerto has no slow movement; the second movement is a playful scherzando, whimsical and humorous. It almost has an effervescent quality, like champagne bubbles. If the second movement is like a babbling brook, then the third is like a waterfall. It opens with a sudden rush in the strings, and the piano takes off at a rollicking presto. Licad's pianism is excellent.
Finally, there's the beautiful Violin Concerto No. 3, performed by Cho-Liang Lin. The opening movement is dark and turbulent, but with snatches of lyricism, a foretaste of more to come. The gorgeous slow movement evokes images of spring, with its flowering, passionate melodies; Lin is truly disarming here. The third movement is actually based on a motive from the first movement. There are plenty of virtuoso violin fireworks here, but beyond that the movement shows Saint-Saëns' great orchestral craftsmanship. The Philharmonia Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas gets a chance to shine at the end, with a triumphal theme in the brass underscored in the low strings. Brilliant orchestral writing.
One of the best.......2005-11-26
to know Saint-Saens' stuff, this is the disc for you.
If you're already a classical musician, this one should be in your library. It features the three most popular concertos of Saint-Saens, with three internationally-renowned artists - Cecile Licad, Yo Yo Ma, and Jimmy (Cho-Liang) Lin. Licad offers what is arguably the finest recording of
the Piano Concerto #2 (the most-performed and best-known of the five Saint Saens piano concerti). Full of vigor and boisterosity
in the allegro passages and tenderness in the largo passages,
I'd be crazy to try to find a better interpretation of it.
Lin, at his usual bravura best, suavely executes the popular Violin Concerto #3. Incidentally, if you're looking for consistently great recordings of a classical fiddler, look no further. Listen to Lin's recordings. He's never made a bad one and they shine like polished ebony. Yo-Yo Ma always gives a great reading, and the warhorse Cello Concerto #1 is no exception. I first heard this disc in 1990 when I was about 14 years old, and I've never stopped listening to it. I'm glad it hasn't gone out of print - and I hope it never does.
