Beautiful playing, sub-par engineering.......2007-06-06

The musical performance and interpretations on this recording are very satisfying. If you're familiar with John Williams & Itzhak Perlman's somewhat abbreviated recording of the Giuliani Duo Concertante Op. 25, you'll be pleased with Huggett & Savino's take, with all the variations and repeats included, giving almost 37 minutes of delight. Where this recording falls down is in the sound engineering. In particular, the guitar sounds as if it was recorded through a blanket. One reviewer here attributed the "muddy" sound to the use of period instruments, but I think it's just plain old-fashioned bad studio work. The guitar's presence is also dynamically weaker than the violin, and this could have been gracefully compensated with better mixing. You may find yourself wanting to punch up the highs and tilt the balance to the right channel in order to rescue the guitar. Still, there's plenty to enjoy here. Both performers shine in the virtuosic passages in these works, with smooth and effortless sound.

Jewels for Violin and Guitar.......2007-04-10

This performance was recorded in 1993 for Harmonia Mundi and re-released in 2001 on their bargain label Classical Express. We have duets for violin and guitar by Giuliani, a famous guitarist and composer from the early 1800s, and Paganini, an even more famous violinist, guitarist and composer from the same time. So it is not music for violin with guitar accompaniment, far from it, in the Guiliani violin and guitar are equal partners, and in the Paganini it is the guitar that has the virtuoso part. The result is over an hour of beautiful, elegant, tuneful and joyful music, very well played by Monica Huggett on violin and Richard Savino on guitar, who also wrote the brief but adequate notes.
I warmly recommend this CD, which is ridiculously cheap, perfect for a peaceful after dinner hour.

First Class.......2005-01-22

The playing on this cd is perfect and beautiful. Hugget and Savino display a deep musical rapport with their effortless phrasing and voluptuos tone. The recording is on period instruments, so the sound can come across as a little muddy at first, but once you get past that, the textures that they create are phenomenal! One can scarcely believe that this is only two instruments at first. The Paganini Grand Sonata is a particular treat. The piece is for solo guitar with violin accompaniment, which is extremely rare. In fact I think it is one of a kind. Most guitarist play it as a solo, not knowing how to handle the chamber skills of playing it as a duet. However, Savino and Hugget pull it off most convincingly. Throughout the album both display supreme virtuosity and musicianship. It makes for great ambiece. I highly recomend this cd to both the serious musician and the laymen who enjoys tasteful music.

Rare recording of Liszt Ferenc (Franz Liszt) Chamber works.......2003-05-08

Over 1000 out put of Liszt works, majority of us only aware of his piano/symphony works.

This is the recording project by young virtuosi of our time, that give us a fresh new sight of the original compositions and composers new intentions. Many of Liszt's works had been revised more than twice by himself and these are another cases that he also, transcribed for different instruments combinations.

(Daniel Barenboim Piano,conductor with Berliner Philharmoniker)
----Dante sonata is from Liszt's famous Piano book "Annees de Pelerinage Deuxieme annee-Italie" also available by many pianists,there are too many to liszt(list),But this Barenboim CD is a good example of totally different form of music in convenient one recording which I believe also had the same intention as this project.----

Back to this CD,originals for works recorded here were in mainly, piano solo to piano duet, voice.

As a Liszt lover, I always craved more of his rare works not because it is rare but because I am curious to know if he had made any musical revisions. Leslie Howard (Complete Liszt piano works-musthave reference for Liszt piano works:I thought I found a couple of piano first versions which are not widely known, he already recorded those, too) provides us with expert opinions of each works and more. And some curious reference of all the chamber music Liszt wrote or revised in each combinations of instruments.
I have not seen any performance of these works or recordings before, that itself proves that this is a must-have for Liszt lovers. We can peek into his mind as a composer, not as a merely a virtuoso pianist. And how his music was evolved through the years. (Some of the works shows more than 30 years has elapsed from the first version took form and that is a life time of Mozart!)

Listz, Works for Violin and Piano/Barton, Labe.......2000-09-18

This album is filled with beautiful, little heard music. The violin playing is superb and the accompaning piano exquisite. The recording has provided excellent sound as is typical of small scale ensembles on this label. Dorian promises another volume of this genre by Listz. When? When?? When???

This is some absolutlely wonderful chamber music. Alkan's trio is probably the greatest trio ever composed. He's every bit as inventive here as he is with his piano music.

Famous Pianists.......2003-07-16

Unfortunatelly R Smith is not a good Alkan interpreter,he's a bit cold and dry. If you listen to his playing of Etude N#12 in E major and compare it to Bernard Ringeissen's, the latter is much better.The Naxus cd: The Railway and other piano works is inexpensive and really good. Alkan's chamber music can also be found on Timpani label. Hamelin is definitelly the best Alkan interpreter, it would be great if he ever decided to record all Alkan's work, like Leslie Howard with Liszt. R Smith is famous but just like the mainstream media, which is often off, the most known pianists are not always the best!

Good stuff for Alkan fanatics.......2001-03-21

If you're like me, you grab anything you can find with the name "Charles Valentin Alkan" on it, especially if it promises premiere recordings. There are plenty to be heard on this 2-CD release of (mostly) chamber music by the enigmatic French composer, most of which I haven't seen elsewhere. Of particular interest are the Grand Duo Concertante for Violin and Piano and the Sonata de Concert for Cello and Piano: two large-scale, intensely romantic and rhapsodic works of remarkable imagination. The Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello finds Alkan in a more compact, classically elegant mode. Interspersed are some of Alkan's more characteristic virtuoso piano studies... the Marche Funebre Op. 26 is particularly interesting: a somber and subdued procession surrounding a startlingly lovely bell-like interlude. (Note: the Op. 39 #5 Marche Funebre from the "Symphonie" listed above is an error -- Op. 26 actually appears on this CD.)

The sound quality is very good if a bit distant... I believe the recording was made in a church, so there is lots of resonance. The pianist Ronald Smith, an Alkan expert and champion, navigates the complexities of all of this music with conviction.

While beginners should start with the Symphony or Concerto for Solo Piano, this release is a must for the converted Alkan enthusiast.

This is violin and guitar concertante at its best. Harmonia Mundi has produced a beautiful "Romanza." Monica Huggett has a wide variety of CDs to her credit, and I am buying more.

the violin and the guitar make a wonderful combination on this stunning performance by huggett and savino. the pieces themselves are wonderfully chosen, my favorite being giuliani's "duo concertante." definitely a good choice.
