This record will transport you into a different world of sound and spirit: simpler, purer, more tranquil and serene. The program consists of chants from the 12th to the 15th centuries and includes several Sephardic songs--some quite dancelike, some rather mournful. Though the melodic range of the chants is naturally very limited, and the prevailing mood is devotional and somber, they have a lot of textural diversity. Some are purely instrumental, others are for one or two unaccompanied voices. When the tenor and bass sing alone, the latter provides a drone to the former's more florid line, or they move in open intervals, alternating between unison and solo. Their duets with the soprano combine unison, conversational give and take, and counterpoint. Most of the chants use a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations, with fascinating results. The final song employs the entire group; vigorous, assertive, and celebratory, it keeps adding voices and instruments, becoming increasingly elaborate.

The performing group is most admirable. Several singers also play numerous instruments, which include a citole, a cornemuse, a hackbrett simulating a psalterion, a Persian def, and a Syrian rek, in addition to the more familiar vieles and a large variety of flutes and percussion. Among the singers, tenor Hervé Lamy is outstanding. His voice is sweet and velvety, his expressiveness both chaste and intense.

The disc's packaging is odd. The booklet gives neither the texts nor any information about the music or the performers. But both the makers of the instruments, which are, of course, modern reproductions of the ancient originals, and the dates when they were made are listed in meticulous detail. --Edith Eisler

Soothing Chant and Native American Music.......2007-01-27

These are two types of music that I enjoy and find relaxing. Just two tracks are Native American, FYI, and I liked that the chant wasn't just any chant, but they seem to have researched this to find music that was written and used in the time and part of the world of the mission days. Thought this also might be fun to use with California students who are studying the Missions. Saw this at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles, and would recommend that museum to those in or visiting L.A..

As we enter a new century, we have the opportunity to reassess the past with new eyes and new tools. This recording, A Choir of Angels II, presents performances of both ravishing beauty and skilled reconstruction of the musical past of Alta California. On one disc we can gain a unique view of the panorama of musical styles and genres known to the people who populated this region, the last of the Spanish colonies in North America. Listen with care to the "Padre nuestro". It is a gem of choral beauty and one of the most widely-know works from all of Hispanic California. This is a minature masterpiece and performed with exquisite beauty on this recording. Zephyr have done a splendid job all the way around in this recording. All persons who want to know about California's past should be sure to own this disc.

A Choir of Angels II: Mission Music is a lesson in elegance and the peaceful. If you close your eyes while listening to it, you are picked up and carried back in time away from the hub bub of the modern world. The music and vocals are pure, beautiful and as the title suggests, angelic. The even match of voice and instrument blends so well with neither outdoing the other that one almost forgets that they are indeed separate. The liner notes for Paloyoloyo (Cahuilla bird song) translates for us, "I hear the spirits moving in the water, this represents my connection to those who have been here before me." Although I am by no means a music expert that represents to me exactly what this album is, a gateway between the sacred past and the modern world.
