5 out of 5 stars more wonderous with each passing year.......2006-11-13

Most of the reviewers have said (and better than I can) what makes this album so special. I remember having this on cassette and wearing it out. People who have no interest (and sometimes I can't blame them...) in classical music might grow fond of this if they give it a try. You don't need any kind of background or knowledge, just a willingness to open your heart and ears to something so sublime it is beyond words. Bach is our true musical spiritual leader!

5 out of 5 stars Pinnacle.......2005-10-24

I can't over-exaggerate the impact this album had on me when my Dad played it for me when I was about 6. It encouraged me to become a guitarist, and hearing it was my first truly profound musical experience that I can remember.

I love all kinds of music, but nothing has touched me like this album in the 19 years since then. Parkening's reading of Bach arranged for the classical guitar is flawless on this recording; no one, not even his mentor has matched it.

"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring", "Sheep May Safely Graze" and especially "Sleepers Awake" are the best renditions of these songs that I've heard, regardless of the arrangement. His control and dynamics are just staggering.

I can't explain where this album or music came from. It's my absolute favourite album. It's part of human evolution and the continually unfolding Great Work.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Storm.......2005-04-07

The are times when the musician, the composer, and the instrument just match perfectly; this disc is an example of that.

Nevermind that Bach never wrote a single note for the guitar, many of his pieces actually work better on the guitar than they would the clavier. The guitar provides much more opportunity for the musician to impart emotion by varying volume and tone. And Parkening capitalizes on that opportunity beautifully.

His playing is clean, thoughtful, and competent. This is, in my opinion, clearly Parkening's best recording. I highly recommend it. (I also recommend his In the Spanish Style, another of my favorites).

5 out of 5 stars Parkening Play Bach and Plays Him Stunningly!.......2005-02-18

I have loved this recording for over 20 years. I had it on vinyl and was thrilled when it was released in 1985 onto CD along with 6 extra cuts. Originally a Bach interpretive LP of 10 tracks, the CD release added 6 compositions from Couperin, Handel, Weiss, Scarlatti and Visee.

This is now a rare recording, so get it while you can. It's peaceful, highly skilled and simply Christopher Parkening, playing bare and alone, and shining like the sterling musician he is!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2003-09-24

The music of J. S. Bach seems to bring out the best in Christopher Parkening. Mr. Parkening understands Bach, and plays his music with grace, intelligence and sensitivity. He displays those qualities magnificently on this collection.

The selections here represent a wide variety of Bach pieces: portions of cantatas, solo cello works, and pieces from the Well-Tempered Clavier. All of the pieces are transcribed skillfully for solo guitar, and every track flows naturally into the next. Standouts among the Bach pieces include "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Sleepers Awake"--two meditative cantata selections which were so brilliantly arranged and performed that you'd almost think they were originally written for guitar.

And the additional baroque works presented here are not just "filler." Mr. Parkening gives stunning performances of great pieces composed by baroque giants like Handel, and he closes the recording in great style, with a passionate performance of Scarlatti.

Music doesn't get more enjoyable than this.

The great guitarist John Williams has been around the block several times with much of this music, and some of his performances sound as though he's getting a little tired of it. He plays the guitar extremely well, as always; you will never hear a better-executed performance of the Bach Chaconne, and the difficulties of the Scarlatti Sonatas hardly seem to exist for him. Some of the pieces new to his recorded repertory--Telemann, Roncalli, Couperin--are played with all the expression I want to hear. While this is a good disc, though, it's not the best of John Williams. --Leslie Gerber

I would buy this album again for John Williams' arrangement of the Bach Chaconne alone! I've heard several guitarists play this piece and play it well. However, Mr. Williams' performance gave me goose bumps! All of the other pieces are wonderfully played as well. I particulary liked the Scarlatti and Telemann pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque music like you've never heard it..........2007-05-01

"The guitar is not the piano and not the harpsichord. It's right in the middle. The harpsichord is too rigid. You can do more on the piano. But this is really music for the harpsichord, so what the combination of two guitars gives to the music is the range of the piano and the sound of the harpsichord. These sonatas have been played by many guitarists, but they're difficult to transcribe for one guitar. With two guitars, anything is possible."
- Sergio Assad (in the liner notes for Ramaeu, Scarlatti, Couperin, Bach)

I could not agree more with Sergio's assessment of the guitar duo in relation to baroque keyboard music, and I've never enjoyed the genre more than I do listening to this album. The harpsichord and guitar are not as different as one might initially think; the two both use plucked strings, unlike the piano, which uses hammered strings. But the guitar has a much more expressive quality to it than the harpsichord, with a greater range of timbral possibilities. It's only drawback is the difficulty of arranging contrapuntal keyboard music, which generally features multiple simultaneous melodies, for the guitar. Adding a second guitar fixes this problem.
With any other guitarists, the performances might sound disjointed and lose the uniformity that a solo performer brings to the music; but the Assad brothers might as well be one person. They know each other's playing well enough that every dynamic and rhythmic nuance of the music is perfectly synchronized, with an expressiveness generally lacking from other performances. The only downside: after hearing this album, the harpsichord will never sound good enough again.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, simply stunning.......2007-04-22

I heard the "Cyclops" section of Rameau's inventive suite on XM classics, and I absolutely had to have this CD. I like Rameau and Scarlatti anyway, but I was unprepared for how the Assad duo could sound like one guitar, like a harpsichord but better. This music was originally for keyboard, but it sounds incredible on guitar.

The delicacy of the Assad technique is unequalled by any other guitarists I've heard. How they make this music, I'll never know. But it's one of my favorite cd's and so restful and refreshing. There is a lot of music on this cd and it's all wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous recording by gifted musicians.......2006-12-02

Let me start by saying that I am not a musician or even a particularly well-trained listener, but I do have a sizable collection of baroque music and guitar music in general. I know what I like, and I absolutely love this recording. The music is beautiful, just beautiful; and the musicianship is, near as I can tell, flawless and expressive. Scarlatti and Bach, sure they are wonderful, but I have become a fan of Ramaeu since buying this CD.

My suggestion: Click on the links to sample the sort of music on this CD. The sound quality will not be very good, of course, but if these songs sound anything close to the sort of music that you like, then buy the CD. Oh, and get the best sound system you can afford. This recording merits being played on the best. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Vibrant and inventive.......2005-10-07

This is a wonderful recording of classical guitar. One of the interesting (and perhaps ironic) bits is that all of the compositions on this CD were originally done for harpsichord, such as Bach's well known compositions for the Well-Tempered Clavier. The composers here - Domenico Scarlatti, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Francios Couperin, and Johann Sebastian Bach - are all masters of the keyboard composition, here adapated by the Assad brothers, Sergio and Odair.

From their official biography, 'As children, the Assads' mandolinist father guided their discovery of Brazilian music. Their uncanny ability to play guitar together soon evidenced itself, and seven years of study with the classical guitarist and lutenist Monina Tavora (a disciple and former pupil of Andrés Segovia) followed. The Assads' American career began in 1969, under the "Youth for Understanding" aegis. A major prize at the "Rostrom of Young Interpreters" in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, launched their European career. They also achieved victory in the 1973 Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra competition for young soloists. They have performed in recital and with orchestra throughout France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Australia, Great Britain, the Far East, Argentina, and their native Brazil.'

Their sensitivity to string instrument is well founded, and when they turned their attention to compositions for the keyboard, they found that with two guitars, there was a richness that is missing from the more simple 'monochromatic' performance of the keyboard.

As Sarah Cahill states in her introduction to this CD, there is a reason why these pieces sound natural being played on the guitar - harpsichord strings are plucked in similar ways to guitar strings, unlike piano strings which are struck by hammers. Scarlatti wrote for the Queen of Spain, among others. Couperin served in the French court, composing music for lute in addition to harpsichord. Rameau, an organist and composer, also comes from the French school, and J.S. Bach needs no introduction as the pinnacle of composing power in Germany of the eighteenth century.

Sergio and Odair Assad have spent a good deal of time developing a Baroque manner to playing these pieces on their guitars, as to be more faithful to the types of compositions. This CD is a true pleasure to behold, the textures and energy of the music being very vibrant and inventive in many ways.

5 out of 5 stars Sergio & Odair Assad play Rameau, Scarlatti etc,.......2005-07-28

This is probably the best classical guitar CD recording I have ever heard. These two brothers are just amazing.

5 out of 5 stars "Best Harpsichord Recording".......2005-11-05

I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper.
Plenty of music for a moderate price as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-08-09

This CD is very very good just what I was looking for. I highly recommend this CD if you are planning on purchasing a Harpsicord CD, this one is the best.

4 out of 5 stars a must-have for harpsichord lovers.......2004-04-30

I love the sound of this most unusual instrument, the harpsichord. Especially the fast intricately melodic songs. Very enjoyable. This "Greatest Hits" includes many compositions perfectly suited to this wonderful old predecessor to the piano. There's even a little funny trivia thrown in: on the song sheet is written: Q:"what did the famous conductor Sir Thomas say that the harpsichord sounds like? A: "Like two skeletons screwing on a hot tin roof" :)

5 out of 5 stars keeno.......2001-01-08

This is a fun cd. BYRD, BULL, BACH ETC come through great Scarlatti bits sound like a flock of unhappy cows running of a field of burnt popcorn but those bits generally do unless played on the African Kalimba [or thumb piano] in Africa where I need not hear them.

This is a well engineered CD. Many featuring the harpsichord demand a level of equipment beyond that of any regular person with bills, which means this disk sounds just fine on a boom box. Everybody in the family will like some part of this disk `cept for the 13 year old whose lost to punk rock or hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Superb Harpsichord Sampler.......2000-07-27

I can't imagine a better sampler of harpsichord 'hits' played by one of the great stereo-era masters. A full complement of emotions is displayed here, from the most delicate and sparing texture to the most rip-roaring martial roar. If you're wondering what the harpsichord is about, or if you're already a fan and want a great sampler to play for your own delight and amusement, you cannot go wrong with this recording.

This recording is by some of the best to ever play the tuba. They make the most tuba ensemble that you will ever hear. I have listened to my copy so many times I'm going to have to buy another copy soon.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2000-03-21

The tracks on this CD are some of the finest recordings I have heard in my life. The Fugue in G inspired me to search out a copy of the music, which I am attempting to play with half the mastery of these guys. If you play tuba and don't buy this, you are missing out on an awesome CD!

5 out of 5 stars Most wonderful sounds ever heard out of a bunch of Tubas...........1999-12-04

For players of any skill level, this album will make any musician understand, contrary to popular belief, just how versatile an instrument the Tuba is!

5 out of 5 stars Francois Couperin on Naxos.......2006-04-12

This budget-priced recording of harpsichord music by the seventeenth century French composer Francois Couperin (1668 -- 1733) is an outstanding introduction to some little-known music of the French baroque. The performance by harpsichordist Lawrence Cummings, recorded in 1994, has received great critical acclaim. I am pleased that the CD is still getting attention with two recent and justly enthusiastic reviews on this site.

Francois Couperin's harpsichord music departs from that of his predecessors in several ways. While earlier French composers wrote primarily dance pieces, Couperin shifted the focus to short character or genre pieces depicting a specific person, scene or emotion. In addition, the music of earlier French composers for the harpsichord was highly improvisatory, in a form called style brise, derived from music for the lute. It frequently does not use bar lines, relying on the imagination and improvisatory skill of the performer. Francois Couperin changed that by writing out his scores in great detail and in insisting upon a faithful, exact performance of what he wrote.

The eminent scholar of the French baroque period, James Anthony, has aptly described Couperin's harpsichord music as "so elusive, yet so compelling." He wrote:

"[I]n the company of some of Chopin's Mazurkas and Debussy's Preludes, much of Couperin's keyboard music is more a communication between instrument and performer in the intimacy of his music-room than it is between performer on the stage and an unseen audience. It reveals itself only gradually and only after repeated playings. It is wed to its instrument as is no other music."

Couperin's extensive output for the harpsichord is gathered into four large books each of which is subdivided into a section called an "ordre". On this CD, Cummings performs the first ordre of Book One, composed in 1713, consisting of 18 pieces.

The first five pieces are in traditional dance form, but even here Couperin imparts a special character to his miniatures. Thus, the opening Allemande is meant as a portrayal of and high compliment to the Duke of Maine, while the sarabande(no 4), titled "la Magisteuse" is a portrait of Louis XIV in his glory.

The remaining works in the first ordre are all character pieces, many of which derive from vocal music. Some of them are humorous as in "Les Nonetes" portraying a pair of none-too-chaste nuns and "La Bourbonaise", a portrayal of a highly flirtatous and independent woman. Other pieces, such as "Les Sentiments" are highly reflective and melancholy while still others such as "L'Enchantress", "La Pastorale", and "Les Plasirs de Saint Germain en Laye" have the grace and ease of a painting by Watteau. There is much to enjoy here.

The CD concludes with the first and second concerts from Couperin's series "Concerts Royaux". Couperin composed these works for performances at Louis XIV's Sunday musical soirees. They are scored for performance by solo harpsichord or by ensembles. They are performed by Cummings here, with viol and viola da gamba, respectively, added to the final work of each set. These two concert suites return to the use of traditional dance forms. But they are notable because they show Couperin absorbing the style of the Italian baroque into his work. In particular, the second concert includes an "Allemande fugate" and an "air contrefuge" which adopt a fugal style of writing derived from Corelli, a great favorite of Francois Couperin.

This CD will appeal to lovers of the harpsichord and to those listeners who want to explore the beauties of early music.

The quotations in this review are taken from Jamer R. Anthony, "French Baroque Music" revised edition p. 259.

Couperin might have not require too much from his audience.when too many scholarly
expectations from the music aspire you F Couperin could hardly be your favourite. the inscribed movements with names of specific charactors must be intented to
not only inspire the players but audience as well.and the first 2 couantes give the whole program an excellent kick off: full of
nuance, exquisite note touching... which are of quintessence of this kind of baroque charactor pieces.compared to many rigid
pale scholarly distorting renditions.it is truly among my best choices.

    5 out of 5 stars Grrr..........2004-02-05

Sorry, I don't really have a whole lot to say about this recording, but the reviewer below's one star was really bugging me. This is a great selection of Couperin's whimsical harpsichord music, delightfully played and thoroughly enjoyable. And about Naxos, it is the only label out there today pursuing a systemic and affordable approach to the recording of classical music and offers home listeners and collectors a chance to listen to beautiful works of music that would never be available from major record labels like Deutsche Grammophon.

1 out of 5 stars Naxos strikes again.......1999-05-08

Well-intentioned but remarkably stiff and unsubtle performance. Mr. Cummings seems uncomfortable and unfamiliar in this territory. Naxos does not serve music-lovers fairly with this type of recording.

    5 out of 5 stars A beautifully thought-out programme and stunning playing.......2007-04-18

I bought this CD (with slight trepidation) because I was sure I would enjoy most of the music. The trepidation was only because, having discovered the inimitable Andrew Lawrence-King, I wasn't sure how the sound of the modern harp would stack up against his amazing instruments and the even more amazing range of sounds he gets from them. But I needn't have worried. Nancy Allen makes a beautiful, if mostly conventional, sound on her modern harp and her virtosity takes away one's breath. Her articulation is possibly the cleanest of any player of the modern harp I've heard and her sense of rhythmn is faultless. I'm no fan at all of modern music but I even enjoyed the two pieces by Prokofiev on this CD. I can't recommend it highly enough.

    5 out of 5 stars Nancy Allen.......2007-04-16

Nancy Allen is the best harpist in the world and this CD reflects that.

I have just finished the Douglas-Home biography and was thrilled to discover that the disc had been re-issued. It's simply a must-have, the closest we will ever come to hearing this music performed as it was intended to be.

5 out of 5 stars Woodhouse is in my top 5...and I'm not a harpsichord player........1998-10-30

This disc is one of my favorites of all time. Most notable is her use of rubato or flexible time. I find it facinating that such interesting music can be achieved through an instrument with a relatively limited tonal and dynamic range.

5 out of 5 stars Puyana y la edad de oro.......2005-11-14

Thanks to this record, I started to love de harpsichord and to know the music of the golden age of this instrument. I remember the little piece My lady's carey dump or something like that. I should be a pleasure to have it again.

5 out of 5 stars Puyana Plays to Perfection.......2004-06-25

Mr Puyana has a sink-your-teeth-into style of playing upon the harpsichord which I find immensely satisfying. He doesn't pussy-foot upon the keys, he attacks them with a flair and a finesse, appearing to thoroughly enjoy himself in the process. I can readily imagine him performing many of these pieces with a smile creasing his face. And why not? These are some delightful compositions, packed with trills and runs and cadenzas and what have you. A harpsichordist's dream, I'll imagine, and a splendid introduction to this instrument for those who might be unfamiliar. The tone of the instrument is wonderful, clear and ringing. A rousing pick-me-up variety here, perfect to play for a gathering of friends, or while pottering about the house. And whilst doing so, you might discover yourself tapping your toes and smiling along! Also recommended is his disc of Fandangos and Tangos, for another bit of whirlwind musical fun.

5 out of 5 stars Top-Drawer Performance, Sound Quality, Music, and Value.......2000-12-23

This is a reissue of a set of Mercury Living Presence LPs recorded in 1962. Mercury's Living Presence series was renowned for its sound quality; even though this is an ADD CD, the sound quality leaves nothing to be desired.

The first track on the CD is an anonymous piece from 1500, which, with its jumping rhythm and melody, is eerily reminiscent of some of Grieg's piano pieces and some of Tchaikovsky's ballet music, composed nearly four-hundred years later. It is the most unusual piece on a CD filled with pieces that are, if not unusual, at least, with the exception of Bach's Concerto in Dm, not well-known at all, frequently by composers who are equally obscure. All too frequently, I find that music remains little-known because it does not deserve to be known better. That is not the case here. Puyana has chosen wisely; the listener, unless he is quite a musicologist, will be hearing many of these pieces for the first time, and, I think, enjoying them immensely.

Puyana uses a firmer touch than most other harpsichordists, yet he is never heavy-handed. His rhythmic drive is strong, yet he pays attention to the nuances of the pieces.

This CD is also an exceptional value, providing nearly seventy-five minutes of great music at mid-price.
