first-rate interpretations, second-rate recorded sound.......2006-07-30
Do be warned, though, that the recorded sound is very dated: generally it's rather one-dimensional and the resolution is not very high, so that you mostly hear only the most prominent voices of the ensemble at any given time. It's at its worst in the Alpine Symphony, which sounds like a scratchy, screechy 1930's film soundtrack. In the rest of the pieces it ranges from good to serviceable; but if there's any repertoire that really benefits from today's high-fidelity recording technology, massive post-Romantic orchestral scores like these are certainly a front-runner. Buy this set for the marvellous interpretations, but you'll want to explore other, better-recorded readings as well to really hear the full depth and resonance of the orchestral sound.
Not worth it!!!!!!!.......2006-07-19
Personally, I would suggest Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic when it comes to Richard Strauss's tone poems.
Wonderful Interpretation throughout........2006-01-01
These recordings rank among my most cherished and loved. Highlights (for me) include the climax of sunrise in the Alpine Symphony, the huge reverberations as the massive sound of the fff chords carry over into silence in Heldenleben, and the wicked-crazy horns as they rip through the Waltz from Rosenkavalier.
These are prime interpretations (better, I feel than any other -- and I mean ANY - sorry Karajan fans!!!). And these two wonderful forces play their musical heritage with passion and brilliance.
As another reviewer pointed out, the sound quality leaves something to be desired, however it is not quite as bad as they would have us believe. What we first must take into account is that Strauss' huge tone poems put enormous demands on the recording equipment of its day that could not be met. Also, Bohm was stressed above all else that "the melody be prominent". Yes - as a result the recording really kicks out the melody line.
Okay - take that into account and listen to these with some imagination. I assure you that you will be able to hear the detail of Strauss' music - but more importantly the style and idea of it. Listen like you would look at a black and white photo. While the B&W leaves more for your imagination, you still "get the picture" - and sometimes the B&W reveales more! It's exactly the same with this incredible box of Strauss.
The interpretation is absolutely stunning and revealing. Bohm nailed this on the head and truly captured the essence of this music. I feel this is a wonderful place for you to start if you know little Strauss - and if you know much about Strauss, this is a great place for you to hear a different, but seemingly perfect interpretation of Strauss.

Excellent Lesser-Known Shostakovich Fifth.......2004-08-09
The remaining short orchestral works are given stunning performances in even better digital sound, proving that Shostakovich knew how to write light, fun music as much as serious symphonies and concertos. Ultimately, this CD is worth it just for the outstanding Fifth Symphony

A Wonderful Collection .......2005-12-17
At the same time that the various musical selections exhibit Shostakovich's range and diversity, they are nonetheless arranged in such a way that the listener doesn't experience any unpleasant impact from the sudden change in tempo that occurs, for example, when the Romance in track 5 ends, and the very next selection is the highly energetic allegro movement from the Symphony No. 10. Rather, the feeling is one of stimulation and excitement as one moves, from one selection to the next, through the wonderful variety of Shostakovich's compositions.
The quality of the musicianship on every track is first rate, including the selections played by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and its talented conductor, Theodore Kuchar. The andante movemont of the Piano Concerto No. 2 is a slice of musical heaven, played wonderfully by pianist Michael Houston and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. There is power, intensity, tenderness, subtlety, and great beauty in the wonderful performances on this very reasonably priced CD. The sound engineering is also first rate, with crystal clear sound and excellent balance of the instruments. For those who want to hear a greater number of selections from this composer, Naxos has now released the two-CD "The Very Best of Shostakovitch."
Amongst the "Best of" or "Greatest Hits of" classical music CD's that I have, this is one of the best. Highly recommended.

If You Like the A.K. Stuff, Get It.......2007-02-24
Symphony 3. I heard it twice on satellite radio, and knew I needed this piece of music. If you like loud and brassy, really loud and really brassy, this was made for you. Not many pieces 'sound like Khachaturian's 3rd.' Those that do, I want to hear. Don't buy this on a lark. If you dig this stuff on first listen, not many options exist.
While I bought this for the 3rd, I may enjoy the opening track more. By twenty seconds in, I was hooked. The 'Triumphal Poem' is a fun ride with a few twists, and I feel happy I picked up this cd each time I hear either the first or last track.
If you like stirring Russian stuff like Rachmaninov, you'll probably like this one.
Loud and exciting.......2005-12-31
A workable treatment is given to Ippolitov-Ivanov's CAUCASIAN SKETCHS, no doubt included on this recording to accompany the Trans-Caucasian musings of Khachaturian. The most famous of the sketchs, PROCESSION OF THE SARDAR dissapoints the most; it lacks the needed "oomph" to really bring the piece to life. Notwithstanding, the rest of Ippolitov-Ivanov's evocative orchestral suite is performed much more authentically.
Khachaturian's TRIUMPHAL POEM is a rare gem. Ok, so this Soviet-era music is unabshely nationalistic, but it remains good spirited and fun.
Highly recommended, especially for the 3rd Symphony.
Khachaturian's compelling Symphony No. 3.......2005-08-29
The 24 minute excursion is hardly a symphony -- not even in the realm of Strauss's looseleaf "Alpine" Symphony -- nor is it a symphonic poem in the strictest sense. It bears little in common, developmentally, with Khachaturian's Symphony No. 2, his best symphony.
In addition, the recording uses 15 trumpets to help make its statement. The music revolves around a patriotic theme that turns into an organ statement followed by blasts from the brass and strings. A more rhapsodic episode ensues, to be followed by more ostinato organ and brass. It could be called vapid and empty if it wasn't so good!
The whole thing is one of the loudest musical episodes I've ever heard and one of the most amazing classical extravaganzas short of Messian's "Turangaglia" Symphony. Strangely, it works wonderfully in its excessive, forceful way. The music variably sounds like a patriotic Soviet suite and American film music. The organ section reminded me of William Bolcom's "Black Host", a composition for organ and percussion that was played on NPR stations on Halloween in the 1970s.
About the other compositions...This was the first recording of Khachaturian's "Triumphal Poem" a more traditional (for Khachaturian) Eurasian themed piece in a major key. It is still the only recording listed of this pleasant score.
This performance of Ippolitov-Ivanov's "Caucasian Sketches" is quite good by my reckoning. It may not have the panache of your old favorite but is far more than a tuneful makeweight to the more highly recommended Khachaturian. I found the "In the Mosque" section quite memorable with its mournful underpinnings.
The BBC Philharmonic plays wonderfully on this well recorded CD for conductor Fedor Glushcehenko, who was trained at the Moscow Conservatory. The notes talk about the music and performers and give you some insight into why the two are merged on this recording.
All told, this is most valuable for the energetic and forceful performance of the Symphony No. 3, which has only been recorded a couple other times. This version is clearly preferable among those available.
Tempos are Lethargic!.......2005-05-10
An Outstanding Disc.......2003-03-06
The Triumphal Poem is a piece d'occasion like Shostakovich's Festival Overture. It is music that the Communist Party could appreciate since it is meant to describe people rejoicing in a great people's festival. The Triumphal Poem is charming music as befits a celebration and is, characteristically of Khatchaturian, is a little long winded.
The performance of Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches makes a nice pairing. The work is perfectly played, with the exotic and colorful depiction of places and people wonderfully conveyed. Certainly, the best know part of this suite is the Procession of the Sardar, a march that seems to perfectly describe a sultan and his entourage. "In the Village" makes use of exotic colors convey the many facets of village life and "In the Mosque" is quiet and contemplative. The suite beautifully conveys the place it is meant to describe the Caucasian Mountains.

The glory of Strauss in DDD sound.......2004-11-02
Lopez-Cobos has put together four disparate Strauss pieces -- Salome's Dance Of The Seven Veils, Suite From Der Rosenkavalier, Burlesque For Piano And Orchestra and Festival Prelude For Organ And Orchestra -- in 76 minutes of outstanding performances brilliantly recorded in clear, balanced sound with extraordinary depth.
The Cincinnati orchestra's playing is universally exemplary and is acutely vivid during the Rosenkavalier Suite, the music from the opera organized by someone other than the composer, but for which the composer took royalties. This meandering and wonderful music, which is by turns tempestuous and tender, is the greatest achievement on this recording. The Festival Prelude is equally well done.
No praise is too lofty for the recording technicians and the Cincinnati players, especially the brass players. Their distinguished musicianship and style is 100 percent straight on all through this magnificent CD. The single disappointment is Jeffrey Kahane's piano playing during the Burleske, which is far from a great work of art.
But this is small negative compensation and does not dim the very bright light shone on this prominent issue from this conductor and orchestra, which are unfortunately no longer together. Lopez-Cobos was not always beloved by Cincinnati critics during his tenure in the Queen City but it was not because of music-making like that produced on this CD!
Lopez-Cobos and the orchestra recorded several Mahler and Bruckner symphonies of varying quality during their years together. If they could pull off Strauss of this quality, they'd have been a natural pairing to make DDD recordings of his lengthier symphonic treatises "Also Sprach Zarathustra", "Ein Heldenleben" and the "Alpine" Symphony. Pity to say we will probably never get the chance to hear it.

Decent reading with excellent performance.......2004-08-01
I feel like Muti excels in the buildup to the earthshattering climax of the 1st movement, and does a great job with the scherzo and the opening of the final movement. Halfway through the final movement, he loses a lot of the edge and suspense that I find to be so prominent on better recordings (Previn and both Bernstein's come immediately to mind). He makes up for it in one of the best performed and best recorded finales... a slow interpretation that surpasses Rostropovich. For a slow ending, I still prefer the Ashkenazy, which is sadly out-of-print.
It is a very good recording, but I cannot recommend it as a first for those who haven't heard the piece. Overall, it is uneven with some very good moments, and one of the best recorded (sound-wise) performances of this piece I have heard. Recommended for DSCH 5 enthusiasts and collectors.
