4 out of 5 stars first-rate interpretations, second-rate recorded sound.......2006-07-30

What admirable interpretations from Böhm! He breathes so much character into each of the musical "paragraphs" in these readings. Each theme is given its own distinct tempo, chosen with exceptional judgement to emphasize its idiosyncracies and expressive character; and Böhm can turn his orchestra on a dime when a good deal of contrast is called for between the end of one paragraph and beginning of the next. There's also enourmous dynamic range and contrast, form the softest pianissimi to thundering fortissimi. These are readings that really bring out the broad ebb and flow of these long pieces, emphasizing the structure, the architecture of them. They're really fantastic.

Do be warned, though, that the recorded sound is very dated: generally it's rather one-dimensional and the resolution is not very high, so that you mostly hear only the most prominent voices of the ensemble at any given time. It's at its worst in the Alpine Symphony, which sounds like a scratchy, screechy 1930's film soundtrack. In the rest of the pieces it ranges from good to serviceable; but if there's any repertoire that really benefits from today's high-fidelity recording technology, massive post-Romantic orchestral scores like these are certainly a front-runner. Buy this set for the marvellous interpretations, but you'll want to explore other, better-recorded readings as well to really hear the full depth and resonance of the orchestral sound.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it!!!!!!!.......2006-07-19

This seems like a great deal with the amount of material and the price, but the truth is "cheap price, cheap recordings" . I highly suggest if you want to get the most of Richard Strauss's tone poems you should buy different recordings. The main thing I was disappointed with on this box set was the recording of An Alpine Symphony. The recording of the alpine symphony was too old and weak, sloppy and loud (only at times),and just ok overall. The alpine symphony is on the first cd so I after I listened to that, I had a bad attitude about the rest of it. Even though, all of the other recordings are pretty good or ok.

Personally, I would suggest Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic when it comes to Richard Strauss's tone poems.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Interpretation throughout........2006-01-01

This collection is a wonderful package in that it brings together one of Strauss's life friends and largest advocates (Karl Bohm) with two incredible GERMAN orchestras playing their own nationalistic music.

These recordings rank among my most cherished and loved. Highlights (for me) include the climax of sunrise in the Alpine Symphony, the huge reverberations as the massive sound of the fff chords carry over into silence in Heldenleben, and the wicked-crazy horns as they rip through the Waltz from Rosenkavalier.

These are prime interpretations (better, I feel than any other -- and I mean ANY - sorry Karajan fans!!!). And these two wonderful forces play their musical heritage with passion and brilliance.

As another reviewer pointed out, the sound quality leaves something to be desired, however it is not quite as bad as they would have us believe. What we first must take into account is that Strauss' huge tone poems put enormous demands on the recording equipment of its day that could not be met. Also, Bohm was stressed above all else that "the melody be prominent". Yes - as a result the recording really kicks out the melody line.

Okay - take that into account and listen to these with some imagination. I assure you that you will be able to hear the detail of Strauss' music - but more importantly the style and idea of it. Listen like you would look at a black and white photo. While the B&W leaves more for your imagination, you still "get the picture" - and sometimes the B&W reveales more! It's exactly the same with this incredible box of Strauss.

The interpretation is absolutely stunning and revealing. Bohm nailed this on the head and truly captured the essence of this music. I feel this is a wonderful place for you to start if you know little Strauss - and if you know much about Strauss, this is a great place for you to hear a different, but seemingly perfect interpretation of Strauss.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Lesser-Known Shostakovich Fifth.......2004-08-09

This CD features a recording of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony by Vladmir Ashkenazy and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra that should go down as one of the greats. Throughout, Ashkenazy employs the most perfect tempos imaginable, which is what makes this recording stand out above the rest. The first movement march has never sounded this well-integrated into the rest of the movement, creating an exciting and menacing effect. Ashkenazy doesn't rush through it like Bernstein did in his famous 1959 recording. The scherzo has just the right tempo, again surpassing Bernstein's rush-job. The largo is dramatic, without being overblown, like Bernstein's recording. Most satisfying, the finale comes in at just the right tempo (10:57), sounding triumphant, without removing the edge of irony behind it. The sound quality is solid, but not great for a digital recording, but this shouldn't bother most people. This recording--previously out of print--was given very high praise by Gramophone magazine (www.gramophone.co.uk) and was specifically pointed out as an antidote to Bernstein's overrated performance in their review of the latter.
The remaining short orchestral works are given stunning performances in even better digital sound, proving that Shostakovich knew how to write light, fun music as much as serious symphonies and concertos. Ultimately, this CD is worth it just for the outstanding Fifth Symphony

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2006-03-26

The quality of this performance is stunning. Performed by the composer, the Shostakovich piano concertos sparkle on this recording. The orchestra that helped to create this stunning performance is lively and rhythmical. Shostakovich's upbeat and intriguing piano concertos draw each individual listener into the music. Whether you are a fan of classical music or just someone looking for some good music, I am sure that you will appreciate this CD. Trust me; I am a classical pianist, and I have won several piano competitions. This stunning CD is an amazing investment.

By the way, if you enjoy this CD, you might want to buy a CD of Chopin's equally stunning piano concertos!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent performance.......2005-01-14

First of all, Shostakovich was a magnificent composer and performer. The works featured on this CD are a very good representation of his satyrical, ironic style, and the performance of the pieces is perfect. Sometimes the music is dischordant, but never to much; it makes its point without going too far. I bought this CD since I play piano and am working on Shostakovich's Concerto No. 2, and I have not been dissapointed. The sheer speed of some of the pieces is stunning, and the grace and beauty of the slower pieces also amaze me. I highly recommend this recording.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection .......2005-12-17

This is an excellent sampling of the music of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, displaying a wide range of emotion, from the enthusiasm of the first selection, the Festive Overture, to the soaring lyrical beauty of the Romance (track 5), to the poetry of the andante movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 (track 9), to the slow, deep, intensity of the Largo movement of the Piano Trio No. 2 (track 13), very movingly performed by the Stockholm Arts Trio.

At the same time that the various musical selections exhibit Shostakovich's range and diversity, they are nonetheless arranged in such a way that the listener doesn't experience any unpleasant impact from the sudden change in tempo that occurs, for example, when the Romance in track 5 ends, and the very next selection is the highly energetic allegro movement from the Symphony No. 10. Rather, the feeling is one of stimulation and excitement as one moves, from one selection to the next, through the wonderful variety of Shostakovich's compositions.

The quality of the musicianship on every track is first rate, including the selections played by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and its talented conductor, Theodore Kuchar. The andante movemont of the Piano Concerto No. 2 is a slice of musical heaven, played wonderfully by pianist Michael Houston and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. There is power, intensity, tenderness, subtlety, and great beauty in the wonderful performances on this very reasonably priced CD. The sound engineering is also first rate, with crystal clear sound and excellent balance of the instruments. For those who want to hear a greater number of selections from this composer, Naxos has now released the two-CD "The Very Best of Shostakovitch."

Amongst the "Best of" or "Greatest Hits of" classical music CD's that I have, this is one of the best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional & Modern, Russian & Global........2003-03-21

This CD opens a door for me to explore the huge music treasure of Shostakovich. I love every piece of music on this CD. "The Gadfly" film score suit is especially beautiful and performed by first-class musicians in National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. There is too little, this is the only problem with this CD to me.

4 out of 5 stars If You Like the A.K. Stuff, Get It.......2007-02-24

I wouldn't reccommend this for the Ippolitov-Ivanov piece. I have listened to it a number of times, and it isn't why I pop in the cd. I don't skip over it (ok, well, sometimes I do), it simply is not a reason for buying the disc. Many composers write soothing music. Most write it better than it is performed here. Two stars, but that isn't an embarrassment. I would regret the purchase if it were only for that.

Symphony 3. I heard it twice on satellite radio, and knew I needed this piece of music. If you like loud and brassy, really loud and really brassy, this was made for you. Not many pieces 'sound like Khachaturian's 3rd.' Those that do, I want to hear. Don't buy this on a lark. If you dig this stuff on first listen, not many options exist.

While I bought this for the 3rd, I may enjoy the opening track more. By twenty seconds in, I was hooked. The 'Triumphal Poem' is a fun ride with a few twists, and I feel happy I picked up this cd each time I hear either the first or last track.

If you like stirring Russian stuff like Rachmaninov, you'll probably like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Loud and exciting.......2005-12-31

Khachaturian's 3rd Symphony must be one of the most under-played and under-appreciated orchestal works of the 20th century. This is good ol' bombastic Aram at his best; count 'em...15 trumpets cry out in triumph to open this piece and whet the listener's appetite for the big music to come. Then the demonically possesed organ begins to sound; this is "haunted house" music par excellence. Of course, exotic dance rhythms and melodies abound here too, a Khachaturian trademark. As a whole, this music is loud, loud, loud and the sonics of this Chandos recording catch all the details. It can't get much better.

A workable treatment is given to Ippolitov-Ivanov's CAUCASIAN SKETCHS, no doubt included on this recording to accompany the Trans-Caucasian musings of Khachaturian. The most famous of the sketchs, PROCESSION OF THE SARDAR dissapoints the most; it lacks the needed "oomph" to really bring the piece to life. Notwithstanding, the rest of Ippolitov-Ivanov's evocative orchestral suite is performed much more authentically.

Khachaturian's TRIUMPHAL POEM is a rare gem. Ok, so this Soviet-era music is unabshely nationalistic, but it remains good spirited and fun.

Highly recommended, especially for the 3rd Symphony.

4 out of 5 stars Khachaturian's compelling Symphony No. 3.......2005-08-29

The main attraction on this Chandos disc is the Symphony No. 3 by Armenian Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian. Written in the era when Soviet officials had banned "formalism" in music -- AKA sonata form or any other form that excluded heroic Soviet themes amidst patriotic flag-waving -- Khachaturian responded by composing what he called a "symphony poem".

The 24 minute excursion is hardly a symphony -- not even in the realm of Strauss's looseleaf "Alpine" Symphony -- nor is it a symphonic poem in the strictest sense. It bears little in common, developmentally, with Khachaturian's Symphony No. 2, his best symphony.

In addition, the recording uses 15 trumpets to help make its statement. The music revolves around a patriotic theme that turns into an organ statement followed by blasts from the brass and strings. A more rhapsodic episode ensues, to be followed by more ostinato organ and brass. It could be called vapid and empty if it wasn't so good!

The whole thing is one of the loudest musical episodes I've ever heard and one of the most amazing classical extravaganzas short of Messian's "Turangaglia" Symphony. Strangely, it works wonderfully in its excessive, forceful way. The music variably sounds like a patriotic Soviet suite and American film music. The organ section reminded me of William Bolcom's "Black Host", a composition for organ and percussion that was played on NPR stations on Halloween in the 1970s.

About the other compositions...This was the first recording of Khachaturian's "Triumphal Poem" a more traditional (for Khachaturian) Eurasian themed piece in a major key. It is still the only recording listed of this pleasant score.

This performance of Ippolitov-Ivanov's "Caucasian Sketches" is quite good by my reckoning. It may not have the panache of your old favorite but is far more than a tuneful makeweight to the more highly recommended Khachaturian. I found the "In the Mosque" section quite memorable with its mournful underpinnings.

The BBC Philharmonic plays wonderfully on this well recorded CD for conductor Fedor Glushcehenko, who was trained at the Moscow Conservatory. The notes talk about the music and performers and give you some insight into why the two are merged on this recording.

All told, this is most valuable for the energetic and forceful performance of the Symphony No. 3, which has only been recorded a couple other times. This version is clearly preferable among those available.

1 out of 5 stars Tempos are Lethargic!.......2005-05-10

Why is "Procession of the Sardar" taken so slow lately? My recording of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops is so energized and my old recording with Anatole Fistoulari on and RCA LP is so much more energized! Both Fagan (NAXOS) and Gluschenko are so slow! It seems that elephants are processing! I also do not like Tjeknavorian's because of the cavernous sound. In the 3rd symphony, Stokowski and Tjeknavorian win hands down-at 18 minutes apiece, at least the experience is not as long as Gluschenko's-25 minutes! It just goes on and on!! This CD needed lots of pumping up. It sounds to me like a rehearsal instead of a finished performance. Keep your fingers crossed for a A1 recording of the Sketches in the future.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Disc.......2003-03-06

This recording was highly recommended by Gramophone for the excellent performances by the BBC Philharmonic, particularly of the Khachaturian works. Chandos should also be complimented on the wonderfully clear quality of the recording. Aram Khachaturian is among my favorite composers; he wrote colorful melodies that are very appealing. The main interest on this disc is Khatchaturian's Third Symphony, a work premiered along with Prokofiev's Sixth Symphony in 1947. Both works got their composers in trouble for their "modernism". Khatchaturian's symphony is noteworthy for the 18 trumpets called for in the score, which play a fanfare in seven parts that is undercut by an organ. The music shows Khachaturian experimenting musically. This is not just a work of bombast with the brass playing triumphal music; it also has a slow movement reminiscent of the beautiful slow movements from his piano and violin concertos.

The Triumphal Poem is a piece d'occasion like Shostakovich's Festival Overture. It is music that the Communist Party could appreciate since it is meant to describe people rejoicing in a great people's festival. The Triumphal Poem is charming music as befits a celebration and is, characteristically of Khatchaturian, is a little long winded.

The performance of Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches makes a nice pairing. The work is perfectly played, with the exotic and colorful depiction of places and people wonderfully conveyed. Certainly, the best know part of this suite is the Procession of the Sardar, a march that seems to perfectly describe a sultan and his entourage. "In the Village" makes use of exotic colors convey the many facets of village life and "In the Mosque" is quiet and contemplative. The suite beautifully conveys the place it is meant to describe the Caucasian Mountains.

4 out of 5 stars The glory of Strauss in DDD sound.......2004-11-02

Most recordings by Jesus Lopez-Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony are an audiophile's dream and this one is no different. Mating four Richard Strauss creations, Telarc has issued a first drawer extravaganza that is stylistically correct and exquisitely played in sparkling sound.

Lopez-Cobos has put together four disparate Strauss pieces -- Salome's Dance Of The Seven Veils, Suite From Der Rosenkavalier, Burlesque For Piano And Orchestra and Festival Prelude For Organ And Orchestra -- in 76 minutes of outstanding performances brilliantly recorded in clear, balanced sound with extraordinary depth.

The Cincinnati orchestra's playing is universally exemplary and is acutely vivid during the Rosenkavalier Suite, the music from the opera organized by someone other than the composer, but for which the composer took royalties. This meandering and wonderful music, which is by turns tempestuous and tender, is the greatest achievement on this recording. The Festival Prelude is equally well done.

No praise is too lofty for the recording technicians and the Cincinnati players, especially the brass players. Their distinguished musicianship and style is 100 percent straight on all through this magnificent CD. The single disappointment is Jeffrey Kahane's piano playing during the Burleske, which is far from a great work of art.

But this is small negative compensation and does not dim the very bright light shone on this prominent issue from this conductor and orchestra, which are unfortunately no longer together. Lopez-Cobos was not always beloved by Cincinnati critics during his tenure in the Queen City but it was not because of music-making like that produced on this CD!

Lopez-Cobos and the orchestra recorded several Mahler and Bruckner symphonies of varying quality during their years together. If they could pull off Strauss of this quality, they'd have been a natural pairing to make DDD recordings of his lengthier symphonic treatises "Also Sprach Zarathustra", "Ein Heldenleben" and the "Alpine" Symphony. Pity to say we will probably never get the chance to hear it.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Decent reading with excellent performance.......2004-08-01

The Philadelphia Orchestra plays superbly in this recording, and the sound quality is stellar. However, I find this to be one of the less moving performances I have heard of this symphony. Dynamics and tempo are done well, and Muti has excellent attention to detail, but there is a missing edge-of-your-seat element in many areas, particularly the slow sections (the entire 3rd movement, and the middle of the final movement).

I feel like Muti excels in the buildup to the earthshattering climax of the 1st movement, and does a great job with the scherzo and the opening of the final movement. Halfway through the final movement, he loses a lot of the edge and suspense that I find to be so prominent on better recordings (Previn and both Bernstein's come immediately to mind). He makes up for it in one of the best performed and best recorded finales... a slow interpretation that surpasses Rostropovich. For a slow ending, I still prefer the Ashkenazy, which is sadly out-of-print.

It is a very good recording, but I cannot recommend it as a first for those who haven't heard the piece. Overall, it is uneven with some very good moments, and one of the best recorded (sound-wise) performances of this piece I have heard. Recommended for DSCH 5 enthusiasts and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Best 5th and Festive Overture out there.......2003-01-11

I previously owned the Ormandy recording of Shostakovich's 5th symphony which was superbly done. However, Muti had a much better brass section to work with, which is featured quite a bit by Shosty. And, according to my friend that is bass trombonist "It's just.....perfect." The brass really put out in these songs and have a great sound doing it. My favorite moment on this CD is the reentry of the melody in the 4th mvt that Muti takes slower than most. It creates an insanely creepy effect and then draws out the end to its fullest. The 4th mvt runs about 2 minutes longer than most because Muti rings every last ounce of the symphony out. And it's not one of those recording where it seems to drag on and on and you can't wait until they finish but quite the opposite. Once their done you wish they would keep playing because they're so good. Fortunately you do. Festive Overture comes right after and is done splendidly. The brass keep a warm, characteristic sound that really fits the piece. When I was playing this in band, our conductor said "Don't make sound like I want to kill you." And I thought, "It's Shostakovich, it's gotta sound like that. It'll sound bad any other way." But this recording proved me wrong. It gives that noble sound that the piece was written for. It's a shame that these Muti recordings are so few now because they the best that you can come buy. I honestly think that he could very well have been the greatest conductor of all time. But that's just me. You can think whatever you want, but I think you'll agree with me once buy this recording, or any other recording of his with the exception of a very few. So buy this while you still can!!!!!

What could DS do after 8, but turn in the opposite direction and do something like and whimsical? This is perfect music for Jarvi, whose renditions of Prokofiev's whimsy laced with melancholy are great. The extras on this disc, including the arrangement of Tea for One, are an essential part of the picture that is painted: not the typical Shostakovich one. This is seriously my second favorite of his symphonies behind 8.
