Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

Heifetz sharing the limelight.......2005-07-19

This must be, quite frankly, the best Bach Double Concerto ever put on disc. Sir Malcolm Sargent - largely forgotten these days, one fears - directs a trenchant performance that storms into one's consciousness from the very opening bar. The result (when added to the delightful give-and-take which Heifetz and his former pupil Erick Friedman exhibit) is that even those weary unto death of so hackneyed a work will find themselves falling in love with it afresh.

If the Bach performance is great, the Mozart is perhaps still greater, displaying a depth all too rare in more conventional interpretations. The central slow movement reveals elegiac passion - Heifetz sharing the limelight with the less flamboyant Primrose - which is more readily associated with Mozart's very last pieces. Those of us who for years had reconciled ourselves to considering the SINFONIA CONCERTANTE rather dull can now, thanks to Heifetz and Primrose, appreciate the composition's true excellence.

Only the Brahms disappoints: captured in sound as remorselessly dry as anything which RCA ever inflicted on Toscanini, and with conducting (by Alfred Wallenstein) that skates over Brahms's surface rather than digging in to his substance. The sonic dryness must have been a deliberate engineering decision, since no trace of it mars the Bach (recorded in England), and since even the Mozart (same venue as the Brahms) is easier on the ears. A mostly treasurable collection, even so; its attractiveness is increased by RCA's decision to reprint the original LPs' annotations.

Great CD........2002-11-10

With the early music movement well in place, one can appreciate Heifetz' tempi and smoothness of interpretation, which contrasts with the more 'romantic' approaches to Bach and Baroque music in general at the time of this recording. With most Bach double violin recordings, I am often tempted to hit the track button and move on. With this recording, I feel guilty if I don't listen to the whole movement. I was impressed at the way the violins are well balanced on this re-issue. Usually, Heifetz gets the microphone!

As for the Mozart, Primrose shows great athletic prowess on the viola, and at times gives a more convincing rendition of some of the passage work of the Sinfonia. However, one is always charmed with the sweeping phrases of Heifetz. The style of play between the two is not entirely opposed, but it is noticeable, and can be very educational to listen carefully to the different ways they execute. Primrose always thought that Heifetz could have been even better had he played with a lower bow arm!

Finally, this Brahms is one of the classic renditions, although I think Feuermann was a better match for Heifetz. Nevertheless, Piatigorsky's poetry makes up for any lack of technical wizardry, especially in the more lyrical passages.

I hate Mozart, and Bach's double is a million miles below Heifetz's level. As for the Brahms, all the technical things were there, but there was one thing missing, INTENSITY!!! Bramns is [poor] if the intensity isn't there, and some of the parts that require exploding just get punched, and the typical aloffness of brahms isn't there. Heifetz is of course amazing, and he is not at fault for these shortcomings. The Conductor and the Orchestra were horreible, and I feel bad that Heifetz had to play with such placid accompianists

Go and buy the recording with Itzahk and Yo-Yo Ma, the two are a perfect match, and Barenboim evokes all the intensity one could handle from a superb Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Heifetz at his Best!!!!!.......2001-12-20

This CD is one to cherish, not just because it is Heifetz. But because it is music. I love the Vivace in the first movement of the Bach double concerto. I have never heard anyone do it at such a brisk pace. Most recordings of it sound dull and boring. This one is breathing life in every note. Heifetz's ability to collaborate with others has always been a problem, but is not very noticeable here. In the Bach Double Concerto, he colaborates with Erick Friedman, a former pupil of his. The sounds of the two violins complement each other so well, you can sometimes forget who is playing what part!! In the Brahms Double concerto for violin and cello, you notice that he and Piatgorsky are completely in sync for the octaves in the beginning of the piece. It is heavenly. The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante was a delight to listen to. It is one of the few classical pieces you will find that use scordatura, which is the changing of the tuning of the strings. Mozart loved the viola, and the music here is exquisitely written for viola. Since the music is basically echoed by the violin an octave higher, you can also say that it is exquisitely written for violin. If you are pondering which Heifetz CD to buy, BUY THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!

The Double Bach is simply heavenly. I listened to the Grumaiux-Krebbers and Oistrach father and son versions. The Heifetz-Friedman is still my top choice - the duo make the music sing out its yearning romanticism. Sound is superb too.

Playing the right notes, in Baroque music, will get you 10% there.......2007-01-03

I recently heard "Concerto For Two Violins In D Minor" from this recording on the radio. I was very disappointed. The technique and tone quality and all of that was fine, but the interpretation was quite off. I wouldn't even call this a "modern" interpretation, rather, I would call this a "complete lack of interpretation".

In the Baroque style, the first and last movements would have been nearly twice as fast, and the middle movement probably would have been played slower. As they were performed here, they almost seemed the same. The Baroque era was all about contrast. Echo dynamics, which were so clearly indicated in most Bach scores even when other dynamics were left out (such as the opening measures to the Prelude to the first suite for unaccompanied cello) were half-hearted and seemed more like an afterthought here. One is left wondering if the reduced tempos were due to lack of technical ability (of the soloists or the accompanying orchestra) or just a complete breakdown in musical communication.

I would recommend a more faithful production, such as a recording by the Academy of Ancient Music (or anything with Andrew Manze) over this recording any day.

Yehudi played the d major violin concerto so beautiful. The rondo was my favorite, the pause in the begging before jumping into the higher octaves honestly made me cry. This is truley the best recording im my perspective. we will really miss this great musician rest in peace.

A cherished artist, though with declining technique, alas.......2005-12-13

These recordings, mostly dating from the late 50s, catch Menuhin at a low point in his technical decline. Reviewers here haven't touched on the oft-told story of how this famous child prodigy lost his technique almost entirely in early adulthood and had to struggle back painfully (through enormous discipline, spiritual practice, and relearning the instrument from scratch) until he was a semblance of his former self. Beneath the out-of-tune playing and awkwardly slow passage work remained a great musician. But of all instruments, the violin is almost impossible to listen to when intonation is sour.

It is frequently sour on these CDs. The Beethoven in particular sounds faulty. Yet the early stereo versions of the Bruch concerto with Walter Susskind and the Mendelssohn with Efram Krutz are great examples of Menuhin's undiminished artistry, which transcended technique. The 1957 Brahms concerto, accompanied by Rudolf Kempe and the Berlin Phil. in quiet, civilized fashion, allows Menuhin to expand musically, and he has moments of lyrical beauty that are deeply touching. But all the fast passages are marred by intonation problems and smudged fingering, and his technique isn't adequate to the first movement cadenza. Every performance is worth a listen, but I would be cautious about a colleciton of sometimes painful memories. Menuhin recovered enough to play well in the Beethoven concerto for Otto Klemperer later on, and of course there are a series of classic post-war recordings in good, clear mono with Furtwangler that spiritually soar while also holding their own technically.

I have to admit that in this recording Yehudi is not as sharp as he is in earlier ones, but the fine-tuned expressiveness has not been lost. I would buy this cd simply for the Bruch Violin Concerto, if nothing else, which is a dangerous undertaking to listen to at all, as one is liable to forget to breathe. The Brahms is definitely worth finding a different recording of, however, the 1949 EMI classics is much better.
The most important thing to remember about this album, however, is that Menuhin has never been, and never claimed to be, the best technical player ever. It is his unique interpretation and earnestness that people really fall in love with, and that, he still has.

A comment about the Brahms.......2005-06-26

This recording of the Brahms concerto is one Menuhin made later in life. It is almost painful to listen to. Menuhin has technical problems and sound like he's working very hard in passages where the music should flow easily -- and does flow easily in his earlier recording with Furtwangler. Only occasionally does the passionate artist rise out of the challenged technician and take my breath away -- a passage here and there, but not enough to make it a worthwhile experience. For this particular work, as well as for the Beethoven, I strongly recommend getting EMI's release of the early 1950's Menuhin/Furtwangler performances -- soul-searching, fluid, inventive, and awe-inspiring.

Passionate and singing, outstanding violin playing.......2003-11-15

Ms. Mutter makes the violin sing in this fine collection of violin concertos recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic. Ms. Mutter was discovered by Herbert von Karajan at age 13, declared by him as "the greatest musical prodigy since the young Menuhin" and played with the Berlin Philharmonic as a teenager. The two Mozart concertos were recorded when she was only 15. The other concertos were recorded before she was twenty years old. My favorite is the Mendelssohn concerto. Ms. Mutter plays its haunting theme with elegance,flair and fire. Her passion and precision are evident through the difficult passages. Married to conductor Andre Previn, who wrote a violin concerto for her, Ms. Mutter never fails to intrigue her audience, making her vioin sing with colorful, soulful voices.

Deutsche Grammophon has assembled the recordings made by violinist Mutter, conductor Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic back in the 1970's and early 1980's when Mutter was a teenage prodigy on the violin. The finest performances are those of the Beethoven and Brahms concertos, but the others are fine too, especially the Mozart concertos. Sound quality purists may prefer remastered versions of the Beethoven violin concerto - available as part of Deutsche Grammophon's complete Beethoven commemorative edition and the others which are available separately on Deutsche Grammophon's legendary recordings series. Yet those who prefer having all these performances in one box set won't be disappointed with the sound quality.

To know that Anne-Sophie was just a teen when these recordings were made...15 to 19 years of age...is truly astonishing. She plays with a virtuosity well beyong her years. As the booklet states, Karajan has referred to her as "the most outstanding musical prodigy since the young Menuhin"; as anyone can tell by listening to this set, this is an apt title for her. I am no expert when it comes to Classical music, so I won't attempt to compare or analyze or go into the set deeply; but I certainly know something beautiful when I hear it, and this set of 4 cds is certainly that. Recommended!

Great collection of great concertos.......2000-01-16

Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the finest violinists of our time. Her tone is powerful and sensitive, and her technique is superb. Like the title suggests, these are some of the greatest concertos written for violin; Mutter plays these masterpieces with her own distinct style and musicality.

How to describe Kreisler's playing? Just as Furtwangler is often contrasted to Toscanini, it is perhaps instructive to imagine Kreisler as the almost exact opposite of the violinist who largely supplanted him, Jascha Heifetz. Heifetz' speeds tend to be faster, the tempo more unyielding, his vibrato tighter and more restrained, and his interpretations more classical and aristocratic (sometimes tending towards cold). To call his playing schmaltzy probably does Kreisler a disservice, but it is undeniable that he often flirts with the vulgar. His frequent use of obvious and unsubtle rubato to shape the musical lines and frequent portamento effects are not to everyone's tastes, and there is, of course, his famous ever-present vibrato (even on many eighth notes), used to particular effect in the double-stopping. Overall the tone is rich and warm.

The Mozart is played in a style that would be inconceivable today, with long, obvious rallentandos and the warm, Viennese style that was Kreisler's trademark. The use of tubas instead of double basses is also very evident (the basses would not register on the old acoustic recordings), sounding very much like one would expect tubas to sound in Mozart. The andante in particular is ravishingly romantic in a way that most modern listeners do not normally associate with Mozart. An acoustic recording from1924, there is a lot of surface noise, but the soloist is captured well (even if the orchestral accompaniment is, at turns, muddy and occasionally brittle).

The 1927 Brahms recording is, in my opinion, a much more important historical document. Kreisler's unabashedly warm style is well-suited to this concerto, particularly exciting in the first movement. Although the Berlin State Opera Orchestra under Blech is occasionally a little heavy handed, Kreisler brings insights to this work that simply cannot be found anywhere else (one is tempted to recall that Kreisler knew and had played for Brahms himself as a young man). Kreisler consistently shapes his phrases with such authority and rhapsodic beauty of tone that one never questions his judgment. Although there is still surface noise, it is largely unobtrusive and both the violin and the orchestra emerge truthfully (with the balance favoring the soloist).

The Schumann is a filler played in the parlor style immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with Kreisler's recordings of his own violin compositions.

Speaking as someone whose time and budget constraints would normally dictate the acquisition of multiple recordings of a work as somewhat indulgent, this one is well-worth adding to your collection even if it is not a primary recommendation. For students of violin technique and lovers of the Brahms Concerto this one is indispensable, especially considering the bargain price. Five stars for the Brahms, four for the Mozart with the "vintage" sound averaging down the overall score to a four.

Stupendous Schneiderhan.......2005-04-14

The most recent batch of DG's "Original Masters" box sets boasts several titles that will leave classical collectors rejoicing, "Wolfgang Schneiderhan: The 1950s Concerto Recordings" foremost among them. This 5CD set features the then Deutsche Grammophon "house fiddler" in brilliant performances of Vivaldi, Tartini, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Martin Violin Concertos. In some of my previous reviews of box sets in the OM series, I have been critical of what the powers that be at UNI have done in terms of their selection of material, but here they got it almost perfect. Instead of duplicating a title in DG's "Originals" series that couples Schneiderhan's stereo recordings of the Beethoven VC and Mozart No. 5, they reissue his earlier, and better, mono accounts here. By contrast, they reissue the violinist's stereo performance of Mozart's 4th Concerto (1960 with Schmidt-Isserstedt) on this set because his 1956 mono account had already been included in the Hans Rosbaud title in this series. (Thankfully, the duplication lesson seemingly has been learned after they put the very same Dvorak Cello Concerto recording on both the Josef Krips and Zara Nelsova OM boxes!) Also of note here are a magical Mendelssohn VC with Fricsay, brilliant Bach 1041-1043s and an invigorating Four Seasons, the set's only other stereo selection along with the Mozart VC4. This set alas has one minor problem in my opinion. Because DG and Decca are now all part of Universal, Schneiderhan's performance of the Martin Concerto with Ansermet, originally made for Decca and currently available on a "Double Decca" title devoted to the composer, is included here. It is unnecessary duplication for me but others may not care. Personally I would have nixed the Bach Partita included on CD2 (hello, the title is "Concerto Recordings") and the Martin to make this a tidier four disc set. But even as is, "Wolfgang Schneiderhan: The 1950s Concerto Recordings" is one of the true gems in the "Original Masters" series.

A Brahms concerto that has everything but distinciton.......2006-04-25

I bought this CD after hearing Zimmermann perform the Brahms concerto with the NY Phil. last month, a concert that won him raves form the critics and a huge ovation in the hall. Strangely, his recorded version from 1995 lacks impact, despsite the fact that he demonstrates exactly the same traits. Zimmremann is amazingly clean and accurate in his playing. NOt a note in the fastest passagework sounds smudged. He is a forthright musician, never wallowing or drawing attention to himself. He respects the text, yet he isn't a dull literalaist--he throws the work across the footlights, so to speak.

Nor is Sawallisch at fault. His conducting of the Berlin Phil. isn't inspired--this conductor is a kapellmeister through and through--but each movement is energetic and shaped carefully. The missing ingredient seems to be a matter of personal style. Clean, exact virtuosity isn't enough in a recording. Without the visceral impact of a live encounter, one simply hears strings of notes. Zimmermann comes off as a frgettable interpreter. No doubt he will continue to amaze audiences, but like Rachlin, Rapin, Sitkovetsky and others in the first rank, Zimmermann lacks star quality of the kind that makes Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, and Mxim Vengerov unforgettable, each in their own way.

Spectacular performance of a demanding piece.......2002-05-10

Frank Peter Zimmerman gives an incredible performance of a concerto that very few violinist have been able to achieve either in live performance or in recordings. With this release, you get the best of both worlds -- a live performance executed by one of the world's best performers and musicians.

In comparison with his earlier recording of the Beethoven Violin concerto, this Brahms performance shows the breadth of Zimmerman's growth as an artist. This Brahms recording is a "must-have" for anyone who enjoys good music.
