Product Description
Havergal Brian's shorter works tend to be light-hearted, blithe--your basic crowd-pleasers. Comedy Overture (of 1962) is one of these, very reminiscent of Holst and Bliss. His larger works are more serious and somewhat demanding of both audience and performer(s). Brian's instrument was the violin, and his early symphonies emphasize it. The Violin Concerto (of 1934) focuses on the violin's melodic range rather than the pyrotechnics that can be achieved with the instrument. Conservative in scope, it's nonetheless a delight. Symphony 18 is very short (15 minutes) and hints of Hindemith. Not a bad thing. A good place to start with Brian. --Paul Cook

Havergal Brian was a genius.......2006-08-18

If looking for a good British composer................2006-01-11
If you have to ---as I did --- "discover" Havergal B. then this low budget violin cto is his best piece ( of the 2 dozen or so that sorely tested my Gag reflex ). Elgar, Britten, Tippet; Delius, RvW, Walton,Bax ; even Rawsthorne, Ireland, Bryars, Alwyn, Rubbra even even Arnold,Finzi,Birtwhistle,Macmillan etc. --- yes I've forgotten many: These are SOME of the Brits you should give to your ears next Happy Ear Day,......... Heed Thee : H.B. is purely anachronistic ( poor at that ): pompous, bombastic, uninspired, crass, wizz-banng at best. Better to listen to, say, Tippet's 4th for the four thousadth time than any thing by this Brian Butcher. ............ So if you really must do Brian , do it cheap and do this CD, okay, eh.
