5 out of 5 stars Good record in ecomonic price.......2007-07-19

This CD is 2 CDs in one price, however, that's not good enought that I recommand it, the more important is that Manze had gotten good appreciation when individual record released, so we could listen his beautiful music with lower price.
As to the list of these collection, the major composer isn't shown of Castello, but Schmelzer, you could view its comments from other reviewers. I would add more coment from comparied with Manze and Holloway. The former is good of violin technique and fluent; the latter is that put more expressive with emotion on it. They all works perfect, not esay to compare. If you ever liked or listen one of them, I recommand you try both of.

      Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Monteverdi's Vespers is a monumental collection of musical settings of liturgical texts for a service in honor of the Virgin. It presents a cornucopia of styles, stretching from traditional plainchant to a forward-looking, innovative aesthetic, and bridges the gap between the Renaissance and the beginnings of Baroque musical language. William Christie leads a beautifully sculpted, majestic performance that is responsive to this stylistic profusion but also makes a case for underlying structural cohesion. The instrumental and choral playing is richly textured, while the soloists give exquisitely wrought accounts of Monteverdi's elaborate word painting. --Thomas May

      Amazon.com essential recording

William Christie and his ensemble Les Arts Florissants offer serious competition for Philippe Herreweghe's outstanding version of the Monteverdi Vespers on Harmonia Mundi. What you hear (and subconsciously appreciate) is detail, in the sound as well as in the vocal and instrumental lines. Careful phrasing and dynamics complement the rich harmonies and inspired melodic writing, enhancing the work's inherent drama. Because of the Vespers' incredible variety of musical styles--highly unusual for a liturgical work from this period--and due to its exceptional length (90-plus minutes) and the number of skilled performers it requires, many observers believe the work was simply an "audition" piece for its composer and was never intended for performance as a complete work. This well-paced, virtuosic performance makes a good case for the Vespers as a unified, cohesive piece. The soloists rival the best on disc, except for tenor Paul Agnew, whose "Nigra sum" is in an exalted class by itself. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars All the Glory and Mysticism of the Monteverdi Masterpiece.......2006-04-11

For those who have had the privilege of singing in a chorus that has performed the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610, this splendid recording by the redoubtable William Christie and Les Arts Florissants will be a nostalgic thrill. Music such as this mighty work are the specialty of Christie and he and his forces manage to recreate the ambience and reverberation sounds of the massive cathedrals where the work was originally performed.

Though a lengthy piece, the variation in sounds between choruses and soloists and antiphonal brass choirs and continuo never ceases to amaze. Here are passages that are quite medieval along with harmonies and rhythms that are forward looking. It is a work with many faces and many paths to ascend the high vaults of Gothic architecture!

Christie has selected excellent soloists: Sophie Marin-Degor, Maryseult Wieczorek, Artur Stefanowicz, Fabian Schofrin, Paul Agnew, B?atrice Martin, and Jonathan Cable are all first rate. Though there are several superb recordings of the Vespers 1610, this recording manages to reach the pinnacle of atmosphere and mysticism better than the others. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars William Christie never disappoints!.......1999-03-08

What a marvelous recording! As always, Christie tries to capture the old masterpiece in its most authentic version. This task is especially difficult with Monteverdi whose music came to us very imcomplete, requiring a significant amount of historical and musicological research before any performance can be attempted. But Christie excels. As always, he is helped by the extraordinary set of musicians and soloists who come to work with him. It is a marvel that so many Les Arts Florissants performers return to work with Christie time and again even though they are almost never paid in advance. It requires a lot of faith in themselves and in their maestro for these performers to invest themselves in Les Arts Florissants while relying only on the expectation of future royalties. No wonder then that their performances are always so inspired and inspiring! Other memorable performances of this kind of music which I would highly recommend include Venetian Vespers (McCreesh) and Cavalli's Vespro della Beata Vergine (Dickey).

      4 out of 5 stars Sumptuous Monterverdi.......1998-11-25

This is a truly sumptuous version. The soloists really dramatize their parts, and Christie goes for gorgeous sound and magnificent effects. This works especially well with the florid melismas set off against the plain-chant cantus firmus in the Gloria of the Magnificat. It works less well in rounding the edges of the startling rhythmic variations on the words "Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis." The gregorian antiphons are included, which for me is a plus. The recorded sound is excellent, though with a fair amount of reverberation to match the conductor's conception.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the world of the cornetto!.......2003-07-14

This extremely good recording is a great example of brilliant cornett playing from Mr. Dickey accompanied by the rich sounds of the Tragicomedia ensemble (essentially a continuo group - playing lutes, viols, harp and keyboard instruments).

Bruce Dickey handles the most difficult divisions with great panache - his articulation is much smoother than some British cornettists I have heard. Dickey uses contemporary (Baroque) singing techniques like 'messa di voce' and phrases the music in a very agreeably vocal manner.

Some of the composers represented on the disc were virtuoso cornettists - Girolamo dalla Casa and Giovanni Bassano, to name two. These composers used chansons from the earlier part of the 16th century as the basis of their compositions - in much the same way that Jazz musicians use 'standards' (well known popular songs) as the starting point for their improvisations.

Several of the works on the CD are presented in different forms, which I feel is very useful to the listener.

I've loved this CD for a decade now and I am sure that any lover of Baroque and / or Renaissance music would find much to admire on this delightful recording. Buy with confidence!

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous musical canvas! .......2005-11-15

I must confess that every time I decide to read a biography of the Great Painters of the past, I use to harmonize it with this enraptured music. The serenity emanated and the astonishing equilibrium of the form is simply unequaled.

Frescobaldi was organist for excellence and exerted that office in San Pedro, Roma between 1604 until his death in 1643 with a brief period as organist in Florence between 1628 and 1634.

His Canzoni constitute perhaps, the most refined evidence of his creative talent. Admirable from all standpoint. Fortunately for us, in the second half of the century XX there was a sudden interest about his musical legacy, that allowed to many ensembles as this fabulous and relatively recent (1979), or Andrew Parrot soloists have made possible the rediscover of such appreciated and many times forgotten gems of this Period.

Perfect tonal balance and aristocrat musicality characterize this excellent ensemble. Go for this CD without dilation.

Although Biber's Battalia and Matthew Locke's The Tempest get co-billing here, Jan Dismas Zelenka's Fanfare in D Major, which opens the CD with a burst of brass from the Trumpet Consort of Innsbruck, is far more than a coupling or filler. The entire CD, most of which is played by Milan's foremost young Baroque ensemble, Il Giardino Armonico, was planned as a dramatic course, and Zelenka's Fanfare is key to the internal drama. Biber's Battalia follows as a 10-minute episode amid others, with its opening sonata making a sort of subfanfare for a catalog of styles that maximize Baroque contrasts and violin-laden vividness. An anonymously composed 20-second "Tune for the Woodlark" interjects a bucolic touch, and Giardino Armonico's Enrico Onofri composes a two-minute Ricercare to segue into Biber's telescoped Partia VII in C Minor, which dolorously indulges shape-shifting, blood-warm viola d'amores, and bass. Locke's emotionally ambivalent music for The Tempest comprises the CD's final 20 minutes, tackling dramatic complexity with jumping violin colors and a bass grounding that keeps the floor moving. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars breathing new life into old works.......2001-02-18

Il Giardino Armonico are, by now, renowned for their flashy, energetic approach to baroque music, and it is a well-deserved label. Two of these pieces have been better recorded elsewhere, however. Andrew Manze's recording of "Die Katz" on Harmonia Mundi is far superior to Onofri's rendition. Manze captures the programmatic essence of this solo violin sonata, glissandos cleverly mimicking the cat's meow. Onofri rushes through it in another show of his talent that, sadly, lacks consideration. Listen to the two different versions and you'll hear what I mean.

The Battalia a 10, an extraordinary and marvelous work from 1673, is oddly doctored up by Il Giardino Armonico. The joyous presto following "the dissolute revels of the musketeers" (a dissonant cacophony of folk songs) is cut tragically short. The next section, "the march," features an excellent fife and drum imitation by the violin and bass (with paper in the strings to make it buzz). The group chose to record this part as if they are marching by the listener, the results of which mean reduced clarity where it would otherwise be most welcome. I appreciate the motivations behind this but the result is less than pleasing. For a superior rendition of the Battalia look for Philip Pickett and the New London Consort's recording of Biber's Requiem in F minor on L'Oiseau-Lyre. This is one of my favorie pieces of music and while I love Il Giardino Armonico they don't give it the reading it deserves.

On the plus side, there's a lot of other great music here, including the Partita for two violas d'amore which sounds incredible. Here the group surpasses Jeanne Lamon's Tafelmusik, who don't come anywhere near Il Giardino Armonico's rich texture of sound with their Sony release. Biber still has a way to go in becoming a big name in the baroque repertoire, but his music is amazing and this CD brings together some of the best of it. I highly recommend the Pickett and Manze CD's, but this is a good recording overall, especially if you've never heard this composer or ensemble before. There is much life in this music, still.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording.......2000-02-19

Thuis recording is an absolutly fantastic buy, the freshness, and vitality which il giradino armonico employ in their interpretation is not only extreemly exciting to listen to, but also works very very well, i think that the hightlight of the whole cd is the sonata representativa, which has a freshness and gypsy-style of violin playing that I have never heard before. A truly excellant recording.

5 out of 5 stars Unique master work, recommended for high sensibility people.......1999-09-17

If you are one of those with an extremely sensitive spirit, you should enjoy this master work. You'll never be closer to God.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording and Great performance.......1999-08-14

There are many baroque specialists, but Il Giardino Armonico is special among them. Their interpretation is aggresive or unfamiliar when you listen to this recording first. As you listen to it repeatedly, you can know that their performance is great and gives us new point of this work

The timbre of the organs is perfect. The spaciousness is far perplexing, dude. Plus, it will freak out your grandparents because this was well before their time. The vocals are shiny as well... Ok, let's say not all grandparents. As for me and my house... "If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it!"

"At about 16.98 USD, I could safely say... I got more than my money's worth!"

      2 out of 5 stars Vivaldi and...Enrico Gatti ?.......2007-03-22

Enrico Gatti is a disciple of slownness. He already proved it with two recordings of Corelli works (Opera Terza and Opera Quinta). I don't share his philosophy.

Why has he recorded the opus II of Vivaldi in 2006 ? Is there something new in these sonatas ? I had the feeling of hearing some old stuff. Of course, there some moments of virtuosity -capriccio, giga-presto, etc.
But these sonatas are in genral boring; for example, two long and dull «Preludios» of seven minutes...

There's noting amazing in this recording ( Biondi did it before)

Don't expect to hear the fantastic sound or the Label Arcana. It is a Glossa sound, very different and disappointing, like this program.

Listen to Carmignola and his quest to discover NEW STUFF OF Vivaldi .

4 out of 5 stars An interesting acquisition.......2000-03-12

In my opinion, American singers like Ragin,Daniels and Minter always demonstrate more originality and artistic impetus than ancient countertenor traditions followers. In this CD with ARTEK,Mr.Minter endorses my impressions though the hurtful record characteristics.Sometimes he pushes on treble notes but the repertoire is a real "tour-de-force" and Minter and ARTEK have a lot of musical puzzles to master. I am not an admirer of ARTEK's sonority because it is excessive dry and Minter doesn,t have a big voice. However he is the star here. The most beautiful "Pianto della Madonna" by Monteverdi is on this disc.Yet,Minter display all his audacity in "Odi quel rosignuolo" and artistic intelligence in "Ribombava d'intorno",this a very beaultiful and exquisite cantata.I enjoy so much this interesting acquisition.
