Lajtha (1892-1963) is one of the great Hungarian composers of this century. He wrote a number of stage works, including three ballets and a comic opera. Suite for Orchestra (1933) comes from a one-act ballet, Lisistrata. The mood of the play--very anti-war--is one of warmth and compassion, fluid and lyrical. Very beautiful music. Lajtha's Symphony 1 (1936) is more even-tempered, yet it has its optimistic side. What also emerges from the symphony is the sheer strength of confidence on the composer's part. It's spirited and full of rich invention. This is an important series from Marco Polo. --Paul Cook
