Album Description

This recital gives a fascinating insight into the many influences on Cuban culture: among them 400 years of Spanish colonial rule and 60 years of exposure to North American culture prior to the 1959 revolution. The music ranges across Afro-Cuban rhythms, twentieth century harmonies, elements of jazz and impressionism, traditional European forms of composition, the country dance form known as the son montuno, and contemporary harmonization of Yoruba melodies from the Oriente region.

Solo Cuban Guitar Music Highlighted in Diverse Program.......2005-04-24

This is a highly listenable recording from Naxos spotlighting the importance of Cuban solo guitar music. The talented guitarist is Marco Tamayo, and the selections reflect a compendium of the finest among Cuban composers: Ñico Rojas, the self taught guitarist, composer and leading figure in the filin (feeling) movement; Harold Gramatges, the prolific and much respected classical composer; Moisés Simons, the composer of the popular "El Manicero" ("The Peanut-Seller"), credited here to Edward Simons; and Leo Brouwer, an otherwise avant-garde experimentalist. Although many of the arrangements are within the soft-jazz, Earl Klugh-like space, the pieces do not belie their Cuban heritage and range from the traditional dance genres such as zapateo, guiajira and son pregón, through Rojas' jazz-influenced harmonies to Gramatges' neo-classical miniatures.

The tone can be at once seductive and then later inspirational, yet what remains consistent is Tamayo's delicate and assured playing, which beautifully conveys the gentle relaxed quality of these works, Some pieces stand alone, such as "El Manicero" (which some may recognize as a variation of the tropical song Judy Garland sang in the "Born in a Trunk" number in "A Star Is Born") or the "Preludio" (the theme from the film "Soy Cuba") and "Canción Triste" by Carlos Fariñas. The remainder function as part of short suites, for instance, the lovely canción-danza pairing by Aldo Rodriguez, which gives a nice structure to otherwise disparate musical styles. The last eight tracks represent an adaptation of Yoruba religious music by Hector Angulo. Quite beautiful and atmospheric on their own, these short pieces convey some intriguing rhythmic drive and complexity that seem odd for a guitar by itself to express. But the Cuban-born Tamayo (now teaching master classes in Salzburg at the Mozarteum) shows impressive dexterity in capturing such emotions on the guitar. As a whole, the album reveals a repertoire well worth discovering and another dimension of Cuban music beyond salsa and the Buena Vista Social Club. This is another of Naxos' discounted recordings ($6.98), an excellent purchase.

With so many guitarists recording the classical guitar standards , this is a refreshing album with largely unknown but also very interesting guitar compositions which are pleasant and substantial. The pieces give a good overview of guitar composers from cuba, played by Marco Tamayo, who is refreshingly musical and technically on top of his playing.

Tito Rojas music has the power to knock you out of your seat and send you to the dance floor, each song has a powerfull message that will hit you like a shooting star. He is one of the greater artis of the wonderfull musical heaven that is the island of Puerto Rico. I love it.

Si quieres oir Tito Rojas a su mejor este es el disco para ti. Despues de este disco vino el de 1992 que tambien estaba bastante bueno. Pero despues de eso nada me llamo la attention. Todo despues de este y el de el 1992 estaba mas o meno o malo. Este es el primer disco de Tito Rojas como un solista. Los arreglos y las letras estaban maravillosas. La voz de Tito estaba a su mejor. Todas los canciones desde el uno a el ocho estaban muy buenas. Pero particularmente las mejores canciones eran "Me Voy O Me Quedo," "Tormnenta De Amor," "Ella Se Hizo Deseo," "Sensual," y "Siempre Sere." Este disco es un clasico de la salsa romantica.

The Best Tito Rojas Album So Far.......2001-08-28

Although this was not the first album I heard or bought from Tito Rojas, it is the one that I enjoy the most. ALL the songs are catchy, sensous, and well played by the band (and Tito himself). The first song I heard was "Siempre Sere" in a compilation album, and got very fast my attention. Afterwards, I heard the other songs little by little and they stayed on my mind after two playings or so. I keep listening to this album (for about a year and half now) on and on and I still have not got tired of it. If I have to play a "new, modern" Salsa record to new friend for she/he to get impressed, this will be the album.

I first heard Nydia Rojas on the Satelight Music program that I have, I was in the other room and I heard the song Nuestra Fiesta, and I said to myself "Who is that"? I got into the other room in time to get the artist name. I agree I would love to have an album of her singing a duet with Alenjandro Fernandez or Pepe Aguilar. Those two doing a duet wouldn't even last on the store shelves. What a combo that would be. But they should be singing "Puro Ranchera" With a good Mariachi like Vargas or Mariachi America.

Looking for ranchera music, I came across Nydia Rojas. Wonderful! I like all of the songs on this CD, and the way Nydia sings them. Her voice is beautiful, rich, clear, and full. The production is very good. I will look forward to more from her.

AN OUTSTANDING RANCHERA ARITIST!!!.......2001-04-21

I purchased Nydia's first solo CD when it came out, and have been amazed with her talent since. She not only has endless natural talent, she is a student of her art. Nydia's obvious love of singing is prevelant in her music. I took my grandmother and my aunt to see her in concert, and they were overwhelmed. My mother has compared her on more than one ocassion to the fabulous (and in our opinion the true queen of ranchera), Amalia Mendoza. Amalia never got the attention she deserved, but I sure hope Nydia does. I can only compare her to Amalia and Maria de Lourdes. If you are a fan of Ranchera and Mariachi, you will understand what I mean when I say that Nydia "cries" when singing. I love her current album, but I hope that she will make an album of old Mexican standards, such as the one Luis Miguel did. It would truly bring Nydia the attention and respect she deserves. If you ever have the chance, go see her in concert!!!!!! WE LOVE HER IN TUCSON, ARIZONA!!!!!!!!!!

This cd is great if you're a traditional Xmas party celebrator from the Carribean. Tito introduces the yesterday music with a touch of today's modern salsa. It's great to hear music that you can sing along, dance to and reminisce with. My wife's favorite is "El Julepe", "Tiempos Navidenos" and "Voy A Parrandear" because Xmas is a time to celebrate and party hardy with good music and favorite people; and this CD is perfect for the occasion. As for me, I like, "Yo No Puedo" and "Ponle Por Nombre Jesus", because I can relate with missing a loved one that is no longer with us and I also can relate to having celebrations of loved ones that have been born during this festive occcasion. You will enjoy this cd and find yourself not only hearing in Xmas but anytime, especially if you get home sick for family or "A taste of Tradition/culture." I would love to go to Puerto Rico during Xmas and hear Tito sing these songs while he stirs up the crowd and motivate them into this happy time of the year with his unique style of performing; which I can imagine would be an expereince I won't forget. Aunque en este disco Tito Rojas no interpreta todos sus mejores exitos (porque son muchas)lo recomiendo firmemente, digno de comprar y escuchar. Sus exitos incluye "Llorare", "Porque Este Amor", "La Gente Dice", "NADIE ES ETERNO","Por Mujeres Como Tu", tres canciones de "Sensual" y muchos mas ; en total 19. Tambien contiene un numero instrumental dandole homenaje a Tito Puente, una balada y una cancion estilo bohemia. El sonido es superior y el "performance" tambien.
