“Methods in Yeast Genetics” is a course that has been offered annually at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for the last thirty years. This is an updated edition of the course manual, which provides a set of teaching experiments, along with protocols and recipes for the standard techniques and reagents used in the study of yeast biology. Since the last edition of the manual was published (2000), revolutionary advances in genomics and proteomics technologies have had a significant impact on the field. This updated edition reflects these advances, and also includes new techniques involving vital staining, visualization of Green Fluorescent Protein, new drug resistance markers, high-copy suppression, Tandem Affinity Protein tag protein purification, gene disruption by double-fusion polymerase chain reaction, and many other recent developments.

    Product Description

Recent studies on the activities of RNA in the cell have revolutionized our understanding of the many roles played by this molecule. The first two editions of The RNA World (1993, 1999) shed light on the pre–biotic era dominated by this versatile molecule, and provided an overview of the state of RNA research at the time. The new third edition of The RNA World updates this perspective, describing the vast array of newly discovered roles for RNA in the modern world. The updated original chapters are supplemented with new chapters on RNA–protein complexes, snRNPs and snoRNPs, telomerase RNA, RNAi, microRNAs, noncoding RNA, and many other subjects. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the biology of nucleic acids and gene regulation and a valuable resource for teaching these concepts.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer.......2006-04-29

The title refers to the hypothesis that before there was DNA there was RNA, inhabiting a world in which not only basic synthesis but also the storing of genetic information was the prerogative of RNA. But the book is much more than this: it is a primer on the world of RNA in its many forms. Each chapter is an authoritative essay on a particular aspect of RNA, from riboswitches to the dynamics of RNA folding. Anyone who wants to access current knowledge about how cells function at a biochemical level should read this book; because of the breadth of subject-matter and the caliber of the contributors, even a specialist is likely to find something new and stimulating.

Too often books of this type are badly written and crammed with unexplained jargon; here the text is a masterpiece of clarity and technical terms are carefully introduced and elucidated. A non-specialist can easily pick up this book and, several hours later, emerge with a good conceptual framework in mind.

The only caveat is that today the field of RNA research is moving so quickly that any hardcopy text will quickly fall out of date. The new work on siRNA, for example, is progressing with such speed that the reader will want to supplement this text with some online research of their own in order to come right up-to-date.

5 out of 5 stars Twenty Five Papers Sumarizing Current Research.......2006-01-22

Although it has been a lot of years since RNA was discovered, and even many years since the breakthrough discoveries by Altman and Cech of RNA Catalytic activity, the new discoveries keep coming, and indeed at a faster and increasing rate. I don't know if it has been the intent of this book to be a sort of master journal of the most significant happening in the area, but it seems to have turned out so.

This is the third edition of 'The RNA World' and it has a series of 25 papers produced by what might be called a 'Who's Who' and a 'What's What' of RNA research. The are broken down by categories with the following names:

The Origins of RNA and RNA at the Origin
    Building a Functional RNA
Exiting the Ancient RNA World - Synthetases and Ribosomes
Richness of RNA Roles in a Modern RNA World
RNA Continues to Triumph Over DNA
    Emerging Tools.

This is a book that any researcher, any laboratory, any organization doing RNA work simply has to have.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent read........2000-04-27

As a second edition, this book is not just an updated version of the original. In fact, it should probably have been called volume 2, instead of second edition. If you have the original, you will want to put this on the shelf next to it. The book covers a great deal in a field that is rapidly moving forward. A must for people interested in what is going on in "the RNA world."

        Book Description

The striking functional versatility of RNA is attributable to its remarkable capacity for conformational change. Current models of RNA synthesis, its maturation, translation, and degradation are all based on specific structures and there is growing appreciation of the functional importance of interactions between RNA and RNA-binding proteins. This book identifies the major intellectual and technical advances in understanding the part played by structure in how RNA works. It encompasses the experimental approaches used to define RNA structure and its influence on RNA functions such as transcription termination, catalysis, recoding, and translational control. Investigators with these interests and students of molecular biology will find this volume a thoroughly up-to-date, provocative survey of a rapidly advancing field and a valuable complement to the recent, highly successful Cold Spring Harbor monograph The RNA World.

        Book Description

When the Shepard's car breaks down in pre-World War II New York City, a chain of events occurs that transforms the lives of the Shepards and the Drakes, as Evan and Rachel meet, court, and marry. But betrayal, disappointment, and secret schemes are on the horizon.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another classic from Yates.......2006-03-20

This is the third novel from Yates that I have read and it is another instant classic. All the subtlety and suburban horror that he packs into Easter Parade and Revolutionary Road is here as you would expect, but this is a much shorter book. As a result much of the action is implied but implied with such skill that you are left in no doubt of the motivations of these, largely unpleasant, characters.

It seems odd to describe reading Yates as a joy as his stories are so tragic, but a joy it is and this book should be in everyone's library.

            Book Description

Studies of the cells and genes of the nematode C. elegans have become a cornerstone of current biology. A classic 1988 Cold Spring Harbor monograph, The Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, described the basic genetics, anatomy and development of the organism. Now, in that authoritative tradition, comes C. elegans II -- not a second edition but a book that breaks new ground and defines the current status of the field, providing a detailed molecular explanation of how development is regulated and the nervous system specifies varied aspects of behavior. This volume is a must for any investigator doing worm studies but it has been written and rigorously edited to illuminate for a wider community of investigators in cell and molecular biology who should know how new knowledge of C. elegans relates to their own specialty.

            Book Description

The gene has become a cultural icon and an increasingly rich source of imagery and ideas for visual artists. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary painting and sculpture, The Molecular Gaze: Art in the Genetic Age explores the moral and bioethical questions these works address. What does it mean to be human? What is "identity" in a society of genetically manipulated individuals? Questions like these are growing louder as genetic technology advances and the public examines the ethical consequences more widely. Suzanne Anker and Dorothy Nelkin, an artist and a social scientist, have written a thought-provoking and visually fascinating book for scientists, artists, students, and general readers intrigued by the anxiety and exhilaration of the genetic age.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An artistic journey through contemporary scientific ideas.......2004-02-23

This is a very inspiring book. An excellent and complete overview of how genetic research is permeating popular culture, of how the gene has become a powerful and pervasive icon with a social meaning that goes beyond its biological properties.
This is an excellent volume for those who are interested in the regular shifts of boundaries between the domains of art and science. The authors explore the rise of an increasingly important new trend in contemporary art involving science by documenting the ideas and images that artists are using in association with the genetic view of life. They underline and provide insight into the social and cultural meaning of genetic research and of genetic essentialism through contemporary artists' interpretation of scientific process. In its well odered and relevantly different sections, Suzanne Anker and Dorothy Nelkin touch upon topics such as the sequencing of the genome and the reduction of humans to 'molecularl texts', the concept of identity, genetic engineering, the creation of transgenics and chimeras, assisted reproduction and cloning.
It is thorough work and well written, with the necessary historical references. A continuous, witty, appropriate and precise account of the questions, concepts, ideas and images fluctuating between the realm of science and that of art. I highly recommend it. A very good buy.
