Customer Reviews:
Robbie Kaplan Says It Well.......2005-11-16
Divorce. Scandal. Suicide. So many awkward times leave you speechless -- or worse fearing you'll say the wrong thing. Fortunately, Kaplan's kind yet no-nonsense book gives you the power to speak -- and help those you love when they're hurting. It's a must-read for tough times.
The Perfect Words.......2005-11-16
This book is a phenomenal guide to finding the perfect words when you want to provide support in the ideal way. As we all know, some situations require a careful approach, some people have delicate sensitivities, and some of life's trials are beyond our comprehension. Especially with loved ones often living so far away, your words may be all you can give. In professional settings where hugs are not appropriate or natural, it's so important to know what to say and how to say it. Robbie Kaplan's book provides the right words, in the perfect way, so that you can be the kind of friend or relative, supportive colleague or neighbor, that you want to be. Highly recommended for all, since the best thing we can do for the people we love is support them...and words are what stay with us the longest.
A Practical Tool.......2005-01-11
For someone working in the world of non-profits and charities, I found this book a helpful tool in dealing with many situations where you want to offer comfort to people who are facing difficult or challenging circumstances. The book offers helpful advice, examples and even sample letters for a wide variety of situations. Robbie Miller Kaplan uses her own experiences as well as consultations with many professionals to create a thoughtfull resource for anyone working in the helping professions.
A Great Resource!.......2005-01-09
Unfortunately, troubling times come up for people close to us all the time and when you least expect it. This is a great resource book to have for those unexpected occasions when you're caught off-guard and aren't sure how best to help your friend who is going through a difficult ordeal. It's scary to think that you might say or do the wrong thing when someone close to you is suffering, so this book gives that reassurance we're all looking for.
Brilliant.......2004-11-04
Robbie Miller Kaplan writes kindly about her personal ordeal in a way that is useful and informative to those of us who have not faced tragedy up close and personal. The book allows you to gather words and be prepared to communicate at times when words mandate great finesse. In addition to words the book facilitates what etiquette to exercise in delicate situations ranging across a multiple spectrum of possibilities to include terrorism. I feel this book is a must have and a keeper for sure.

Customer Reviews:
This Thriller Does What It's Suppposed to Do .......2007-03-30
DON'T SAY A WORD is the first book I've read by Andrew Klavan, and it won't be the last. This is a hugely enjoyable thriller about a psychologist whose young daughter is kidnapped by three sadistic thugs. In order to get his daughter back, the psychologist has to race against time to get information from one of his existing patients.
This is not a subtle book. The kidnappers aren't exactly complex -- they are pretty much evil, sadistic, and completely dislikable. There are also some scenes in DON'T SAY A WORD that border on the melodramatic. Still, this novel is superbly plotted and paced, and I thought the climax was one of the more exciting ones I've read in a while. Klavan is also a fine writer, and his strong prose really elevates the story. This book kept me up late at night, turning the pages.
Although DON'T SAY A WORD is indeed graphic in spots, it's not that different from many other thrillers in the same genre. Still, if you're squeamish about sex and violence, you should avoid this one. This novel was later made into a movie with Michael Douglas, but my understanding is that the movie makes some pretty big changes in the story.
All in all, this is a fine effort, and I look forward to reading more of Klavan's work. If you like this novel, you might want to try 24 HOURS by Greg Iles, which follows a strikingly similar plotline.
Spread The Good Word About Dont Say A Word.......2004-05-19
I would like to start off by saying that this is a really great book. It's exciting throughout and the end has a nice unexpected twist. Andrew Klavan begins the book telling two stories. One about a man named Sport, the other about a man named Conrad Vernon. At first the stories don't seem to be connected at all, but the author begins to weave the two together. By mid book the plot is revealed and Sport has kidnapped Conrad's daughter. The rest of the book is a high excitement ride as Conrad attempts to meet Sport's demands, with hopes of getting his daughter back. I realize that's a rather vague summary, but i don't want to give away any part of the book. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars because once you start it you'll have a really hard time putting it down again. It's really well written and not at all predictable, but it does have some material suitable more for older kids. Obviously elementary school kids aren't probably reading 310 page novels, but this is more of a high school age book. All in all I'm definitely recommending the book, and I'm very glad I chose to read it.
No title.......2004-02-18
This book got my attention really good even though I was impatient on books where I always stop after ten or so pages.
One thing that caught my attention was that in many of these suspence-mystery novels, the 'bad guys,' in this case will be the kidnappers, is not obvious or even evident in the book. In this book the author shows and tells you who the kidnappers are, what they are trying to do and what they want. This technique of the author indeed makes the story exciting - You already know what the kidnappers next step is, now you wait to see how the 'kidnapped' react.
Pure adrenaline rush.......2003-10-27
First of all - don't watch the movie. It really butchered the book, changing its core elements into something quite different and less interesting.
This book is the closest you get to Hitchcock, without watching the movies. The main character is an ordinary man, who is face with the order: "We have your daughter, we are watching you, do as we tell you and don't say a word, or we'll kill her".
Thus he is sent on a task he doesn't understand, and he is trying to deduce the wereabouts of his daughter and the mystery of the number the villains are trying to get out of his patient in a mental hospital.
The pace of the novel is superb, and the language is perfect for this kind of book. This is really the kind of book to keep you through the night.
The situation the characters are put in is really your worst nightmare - when the violence shatters your cozy little world, and you have to fight for everything you hold dear.
This book is equal to "Marathon Man" by William Goldman, shame it didn't manage to get as good movie version as that novel.
entertaining and surprising.......2003-07-24
I enjoyed this book because it was clever with good plot twists and pretty interesting characters, especially the character Elizabeth Burrows. I did think that they could have made it where you didn't know who the kidnappers were, but in a way you didn't, if you read the story and see what I mean. This book was better than most and worth reading.

Customer Reviews:
A great read.......2007-04-11
It has been a while since I read this book, about a year. But it still leaves a great impressin in my memory. I could not put it down for this constant need of needing to know what was going to happen next. The characters and the plot were simply amazing. Well worth the read.
A Web of Lies and Betryal.......2007-01-18
This book took you a roller coaster of a ride after a young woman named Julia discovers that she may indeed be the young girl in an old photo at an exhibit. The story continues on a never ending world wind of lies and betryal. The ending had a predictible twist to it but was worth the read!@
Another fabulous book by Barbara Freethy.
From Russia with Love..........2006-08-08
Julia DeMarco takes a break from wedding plans to peruse a famous photo exhibit and hones in on a photo of a toddler in a Russian Orphanage who bears a striking resemblance to her. When she contacts photojournalist Alex Manning, the son of the attributed photographer, she is taken on an odyssey that will forever change her life. With no recollection of her life prior to her deceased mother marrying her stepfather Gino, Julia wants to resolve the 25 year old mystery before she and Michael can walk down the aisle. Michael wonders if this is not Julia's way of postponing their engagement.
At first supportive of her search, Michael soon is jealous of Alex's presence in Julia's life and wants her to abandon the search - a search that might tear her family apart as she travels across the country to find answers to questions no one wants answered, and some have died to keep hidden. She and Alex get involved with some shady characters along the way and learn a lot more about both their tortured pasts than they could have imagined, as well as a growing desire for each other. But can a traveling man like Alex relinquish his heart and settle down?
Freethy has penned another interesting romantic suspense. Alex and Julia make an intriguing duo; other characters have such limited page time that they end up one pretty dimensional, particularly Michael and Gino. Her younger sister Liz is just annoying. These shortcomings detract from the story a little, but the intriguing plot still makes for a compelling story.
TERRIFIC !!! DID NOT WANT IT TO END........2006-05-22
Another wonderful book from Barbara. the story was predictable, the characters are believable.
Wonderful romantic suspense.......2006-04-23
Radio disc jockey Julia DeMarco's fiance, Michael, is pressuring her to set a wedding date. Julia's mom died six months ago, her younger sister, Liz, moved in with her and her step-dad is drinking. None of them seem to be coping very well and Julia's reluctance to commit is understandable.
But when Julia sees a famous photo taken 25 years ago of a Soviet orphan girl, she thinks *she* might be that girl, which means her concept of who she is will be altered.
Julia begins investigating by finding Alex Manning, the son of the photographer. The photographer died 25 years ago. As a free lancer, Alex has followed in his father's footsteps. Julia and Alex work together to solve the mystery.
Interesting premise and good plot with some surprising twists. Julia and Alex are smart and mature. Liz was a spoiled brat and Michael was a pushy, controlling jerk - not likeable characters. If there's to be a sequel about them, I'm not interested. Ignore them and this story will hold your attention.

Customer Reviews:
Way too religious.......2004-10-14
This book has great letters for very religious folks (numerous references to God, etc.), but I do not believe it reflects how everyday folks express themselves. Would only recommend to a very religious person.
Indispensable!.......2002-11-01
It's on my short list of books that everyone should have on their bookshelf.
Author knows how to put thoughts in words.......2001-08-13
This is a well-written and certainly useful book. I just want add one note. The writing is very feminine. Male readers should use caution when working with this book!
For when you REALLY don't know what to say.......2001-03-09
This book is not full of the usual hard to write letters, these are the REALLY hard to write letters. How to tell your relatives you don't want to spend the holidays with them again. Write a teacher to tell them what a poor (or good) job she did with your child. Tell your Pastor he's not being very supportive of his congregation. These may sound a little harsh but they are written in just right way, with forgiveness and hope for a change. There are also condolence letters, dealing with cancer letters, and all those touchy situations when you don't know what to say. Keep it right next to your stationery.
A true treasure.......2000-02-23
I found this book at the libray one day just browsing. I took it home and fell in love with it. I had to have one of my own. There are so many wonderful letters and ideas. I think everyone would benefit greatly from just this one book.I used several of the letters just the first day that I had it. What can I say, I love it!
