5 out of 5 stars Put a tear in my eye.......2007-02-01

My dog past away in September 2006, so I bought this book for my partner to make her feel better. It's beautifully written and illustrated. It gives hope that one day you and your beloved companion will be united again. Great for both adults and children alike. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone who has lost a pet.......2007-01-10

I purchased this book because I work at a veterinary hospital and we give out books to clients when their pets pass away. One book we keep on hand is "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant, and so I felt like "For Every Dog an Angel" would also be a good choice to give to clients. So far the clients have enjoyed the book. "For Every Dog an Angel" is a great book for anyone who is going through the loss of a pet. It is a heartfelt story that helps to warm the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Little Book!.......2006-06-21

Just yesterday, I had to put down my best friend of over 14 years. A very good friend of mine gave me a copy of this book that very morning, she knew how much this old dog meant to me.
I read it and even though I cried like a baby, it left me with a good feeling.
I recommend this book for adults even more than for kids... if you have ever or are about to lose your dog, it's warmth and simplicity make it very comforting and therapeutic.
I took it with me to the vet's office, and before the deed was done, I laid down next to my old guy on the office floor and read it to him, and told him how one day we'd be together again. I think he understood.
People can be transient, hypocritical, downright nasty and fleeting with their emotions and affections. The love of a dog for it's person, however, is possibly the purest, simplest and most honest love on this earth. Dogs are the kind of creatures that can make even the most skeptical believe in the existence of a higher power. Their love is absolutely unconditional and utterly faithful. God bless these beautiful, unique and wonderful animals... they abide...

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2006-06-01

I lost my baby, Ruby, yesterday. My mom had gotten this book, and she gave it to me last night. I'm 30 years old and have to say the message of this book is perfect for any age, but I think it will especially speak to "grown-ups". The author says things that we are all hoping are true--like about our pet being happy now. I can't explain it, but Davis' figurative language spoke to my soul. Any reader can easily feel that she knows the pain each of us who have lost a pet are feeling. The book is small, uplifting, and made me feel a little better--which I thought was impossible. It also brought a tear to my eye, and I thank the author for putting words to what was in my heart. I also thank her for defining my love for Ruby--she was my "Forever Dog"--and giving me a special title to use for her that seems to give Ruby a place of honor in my life. This book has been a godsend.

This is a transforming and empowering work and it has opened up my life in so many ways! I am so
grateful and the joy that has been brought into my world since reading and rereading this book cannot be completely expressed. I have recommended it to many people and I hope it touches them in the way it has me.

4 out of 5 stars Wow ... Sonia was an Essene in a past life and Christ taught her to be psychic!!.......2007-03-16

Choquette's latest woo-woo book describes how to work with the spiritual realm. She divides spirits into categories such as water, fire, earth, aira, and other elemental notions of spirit guides. She also continues to describe, using stories from her clients, of the many ways spirits get our attention and how she came to know her own spirit helpers throughout her life. This book is a complement to the deck of the same name for users to work with their own guides as they navigate life.

Before God created the Earthly realm occupied by humans, animals, and plants he created an entire spirit world comprised of etheral beings. In religious books there are guidlines for spiritual gifts as not all spirits are of God. Jesus said not to trust every spirit for some are, as Choquette calls them, negative entities. So ... whom better to learn about the spirit world than someone who claims to have been an Essene in a previous life (an ancient Jewish order) as well as a follower of Christ who was taught by the Messiah himself how to be a psychic in her Diary of a Psychic.

Given that many have already reviewed this spirit-based book .... I urge you to read their takes and synopsis of this book. Given some of Choquette's own religious connotations in As Your Guides, I'll leave you with my own supplementary counsel:

Whether or not we are aware of it or not, the spirit world competes for our minds. As Choquette said of negative entities let me build upon that advice of beware.

The Apostle Paul explains how Darker forces can transmit negative vibrations via these entities:

Ephesians 2:1-3 (New International Version)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

Luke 4:6 (New International Version): In his Gospel Luke (I wonder if he knew Sonia when she was getting her psychic lessons in a past life from Jesus ... alas after the Council of Nicea we shall never know for sure) ... the Dark side tempted Jesus in the Desert ... like Mara did to Buddha under the Bodhi Treee. Hmmmm .... I wonder who is copying whose religious mythology ... but I digress

6And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)

10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.

***Did Sonia when she was an Essen know about this?****

Anyways ... to be honest ... the only true spirit you can trust is The Holy Spirit.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource for beginners and experienced folks... just bring your enthusiasm!.......2007-01-09

Sonia Choquette has managed to capture the essence of spirit guides and the role they play in our lives in a manner that is easy-to-read and comprehend. In this book, she describes the various roles of guides and methods of harnessing their input and energy to make progress in your day-to-day life as well as your spiritual journey to Self. This is an excellent resource to which you will refer often.

What touches me most about the book is that she repeats many things that I have heard from other people whom I consider spiritual teachers. It served as a confirmation that what I had heard and experienced was true and common to all, even if unacknowledged.

Choquette describes in pleasing detail the guardian angels, archangels, ministry of angels, and numerous types of spirit guides, offering examples of interaction with each throughout the book. She encourages you to learn to trust in your spirit and what it has to offer as you develop your intuition. While reading, there will surely be some points at which one raises their eyebrow and says, "Hmmm... really?" However, if you follow her techniques, your spirit will guide you to truth.

The words in this book flow into your spirit like a welcome drink of cool water in the summer, one that your soon-to-be recognized guides will undoubtedly sip with you as you read. I know mine did.

5 out of 5 stars So Enlightening, on a practical level.......2006-11-19

I have two of Sonia's books. If she writes another, I will buy that one also. She is amazing and down to earth. This book is very intelligently, yet simply written. She speaks to the heart of the intuitive spirit within all of us. She writes of various guides and angels that can help us along lifes travels. She speaks a simple truth, yet one that we must open our hearts, minds, and spirits to, in order to receive.
Way to go Sonia, keep them coming!

5 out of 5 stars Touching story of a child's life from conception to birth.......2007-05-15

This story presents the touching story of a child's life from conception to birth and beyond. The illustrations are magnificent. The story of an angel accompanying the child on its journey from womb to world is beautiful. This book is a must-read for all children, especially since it will help teach them that life is sacred and begins at conception.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book! Perfect for expectant parents.......2007-05-15

I got this book for my 2 year old when I was 5 months along with my second child. The story is perfect for little ones as it is written in a simple style that is easy to understand. I feel it has helped her comprehend what is happening in mommy's tummy and how a baby grows and is born. She loves it and never fails to point out her baby sister in the pictures. The only warning I have for parents is that it might make you cry the first time you read it, it is so poignant.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual musings from a baby.......2007-05-14

I just love this book. I am a baby nurse and one of the new Daddies told me about it and ever since I have given it to all the new mothers I know and they love it. If you always knew babies were from heaven, this will reinforce that belief. Enjoy, all you new mommies.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!.......2007-03-17

I would buy this for all of my children. I absolutely LOVE this book. It is beautifully written. It is an awesome way to explain pregnancy to older children, and even inquisitive children. There are some religious undertones to it, though.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than I thought...........2007-01-12

I never thought I would be writing a book review for a book I actually paid for, but this one is worth it. I had been looking for a while for a book about babies, and where they come from, for very little children - my girl is three and a half. I didn't want anything too technical, or confusingly explicit (as I said - very little children). This book filled both counts. Beautifully illustrated and told at a level that interests little folk, as well as big ones, I was surprised that it held the attention of both 3 1/2 and 18months, although it is longer than most chldren's books. Both my children seem to be firmly convinced that it is a story about them - and they are the baby in the pictures.
It could also be a useful book for maybe slightly older children facing the death of a family member. I liked the way it provided enough information to raise various issues, but left space for parents and children to explore them together in an appropriate manner.

Book Description

For Every Cat An Angel celebrates the timeless connection between people and their "forever cats." From the moment a kitten is born, the book tells us, a guardian angel watches over it, loving the kitten no matter which path it chooses in life.

Some cats are adopted into loving families and the angel is happy knowing her cat will always be loved and cared for. But sometimes the angel knows someone very special is waiting for her cat, so she sends the cat through the stars until it arrives at the place it is meant to be - at the home of its forever person, where it will become a forever cat. Once a forever person and a forever cat find each other, nothing can ever separate them.

Filled with colorful illustrations, For Every Cat An Angel will delight cat lovers young and old and bring comfort to anyone who has had to say goodbye to their beloved cat companion.

It'll bring a smile to your face and heart! :)

5 out of 5 stars What a Lovely Book!.......2006-11-25

I bought it more than a year ago after the passing of my beloved kitty/soul-mate Princess. It is such a sweet comforting book -- like Princess, this book is small but brimming over with Love.

It's been more than a year since Miss P left me, but whenever I look thru this book I still get tears in my eyes!

5 out of 5 stars Just Perfect.......2006-11-10

When I lost my cat- I was unable to discuss the loss with any degree of detachment. But I needed to be able to explain my kitty being gone to my young nieces who had also loved her. A book was the only solution. If I could read them something and show them pictures, they could have the loss explained and feel comforted by it. Well, not all books are created equal, especially in the "dealing with grief/loss/separation" category. But For Every Cat an Angel was absolutely perfect. The drawings were sweet and whimsical, and the spiritual fairy tale of the cat's angelic passage into life and into death was lovely and moving. Both comforting and a tear-jerker. Hey, and if you can't read it without bawling, you can always give it to the child and have them read it and/or look at the pictures. You just fill in the blanks afterwards! Imagine the relief of this over-emotional Auntie knowing she didn't have to sob all over the poor kids while explaining where the kitty went. Whew! Thank you to author/illustrator Christine Davis, what a perfect book.

5 out of 5 stars For Every Cat an Angel.......2006-08-03

I had originally read "For Every Dog an Angel" and saw that it came in an equally loving Cat version, so when my brother's cat of 18 years crossed over, I just had to send his family this story as a consolation book...just perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful comforting book after the loss of my cat.......2005-10-28

This little book is much like the Rainbow Bridge poem, such a sweet touching childlike story that tells the special bond between human and cat. The pictures are cute and it really gave me comfort after the loss of my beloved Kitty Thumpy. I love it so much I will buy it for all my friends. They have a "For Every Dog an Angel" also that is just as lovely. I also recommend the book "Do Dogs Go to Heaven?" By M. Jean Holmes, if your looking for more Bible based factual book..

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Subtlely deceptive.......2006-08-15

It's hard not to like Doreen Virtue and all she talks about. She talks of many uplifting things. But then she downplays the role of Christ in the world. He is put at the status level of Ghandi and Buddha! Christians understand that this is a great falsehood.

So even though some good comes of following Doreen, her Source is not Christian angels and Christ. If you keep reading her stuff you'll be getting help from fairies, unicorns and angels instead of God himself. You decide if that's who you want to set your faith in.

As I said I like the woman and enjoyed her books I read, but after much soul searching I realized I was subtlely being brainwashed into putting my faith in the wrong things. So I must give the book one star because it's the only option available.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-12-24

Out of all the religious/spiritual books I've read in the last nine years, this is one of my favorites. I read the book from the local library and plan on buying it soon. I can't wait to read the follow up book Divine Prescriptions.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book.......2005-07-07

As a long-time teacher of mediumship, I hadn't found a book to recommend to my students that truly helped them to understand how Spirit delivers messages. Doreen's book clarifies the different ways of receiving messages from the world of Spirit and makes it easier for the first-time student to understand the process of Spirit communication. Although Doreen and I differ about our approaches to who is speaking from Spirit, this book is full of concrete examples, lessons, and ideas for any spiritual seeker to use. I now recommend this book to all my students and clients who want to read about Spirit communication and who are interested in experiencing it for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2004-06-16

Dr. Virtue explains everything so clearly with plenty of examples that anyone can identify with. This book is easy reading, and helps you feel like it truely is easy to get your Divine Connection to God and your Angels. Doreen also includes explainations of the 4 different "Clairs" with meditations, prayer examples, and exercises so that as you are reading, you are given opportunities to learn ways that will help you to develope and open your channels to divine communication. You easily get the jist of what the exersizes do - and you can continue to practice these exercises with other books, magazines, or with other friends. This book also teaches manifesting/co-creating with God. If you have purchased her "Manifesting with the Angels" CD, you will notice that what she writes in her book "Divine Guidance" is practically identical.

This is truely an easy to understand book, and I definately recommend it to anyone who is curious about God and the Angels, and I definately recommend it to anyone looking to get their connection to the light.

Other great books are The Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss, Conversations with God by Neale Walsh, The 72 Names of God by Yehudah Berg, and Blessings from Above - Cassettes from Gary Spivey garyspivey.com.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste!.......2004-02-11

If I could give this book no stars I would. I was never recommended this book, I was just looking for books about angels and bought this book because it looked interesting...I was soooooo wrong! I said a prayer that I found in chapter 3, a prayer that guaranteed results, and I didn't feel a thing. I guess I was rather gullible in believing that it would work.

This is my first and last book by this author.

This book is an absolute MUST if you have children or grandchildren.
I have been exposed to Mr. Walsch's work over on over, and love it. However this book is trully written in an amazing way, that if I'd have to explain to my 3 year old where she comes from and what happend etc...I'd be lost for words! Its a MUST book together with the "Little soul and the Sun"

5 out of 5 stars Teach your Children Well.......2007-02-19

I only regret one thing, that I did not have this treasure book when I rreaised my oldest children. It is a critically required perspective that all children should have to live an abundant and happy life.

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood takes breathless sensuality to thrilling heights in this unforgettable adventure of passion and intrigue.

The Emerald flew across the seas, carrying the pirate Pagan -- despised by the ton, whose riches he plundered, and beloved by the poor, whose plight was eased by his gifts.

The Marquess of Cainewood vows to hunt down the pirate wretch in revenge for his brother's death. But when Jade, an enchanting vision of rippling red hair and eyes of jewel-green, appears at his door to beg desperately for his protection, the Marquess agrees to keep her safe from the villains who want her dead. Jade is infuriating, exasperating, and gorgeous; Caine is noble, strong-willed, and powerful. No woman has ever befuddled him so, nor so deeply aroused his desire. But as Jade answers his knowing caresses with an innocent, wild abandon, they are drawn into a web of treachery that will test the very heart of their love!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Story.......2006-12-03

This is the 2nd book in a series, The Lion's Lady is the first. You can read this book on it's own, but it does visit the characters from the previous book. This was a reread for me. It's not my favorite Julie Garwood book, but I still think it is really good. I enjoy it everytime I read it.
The Marquess of Cainewood (Caine) is on a mission to trap a Pirate. He is masquerading as his enemy, the Pirate Pagan, at a local watering hole. He is hoping that his deception will lure the REAL Pagan to him. Caine wants to kill Pagan, as he has been told that the Pirate is responsible for his younger brothers recent death.
In walks Jade. She is beautiful and certaintly doesn't belong in this bar. She walks up to Caine and asks if he is Pagan. When he says yes she has a strange request.
Caine is intrigued.
To tell you more would spoil some surprises.
This is a good read. The "mystery" parts dragged a bit for me, but I think the wit and loveability of the characters more than make up for it.
It's fun to see how Jade and Caine work together. They compliment eachother well. She is clever, quirky and a little unusual. He is steady and logical, but Jade brings out a lighter side in him. He handles her insecurities beautifully.

3 out of 5 stars Stop whispering already!.......2006-08-11

For all the descriptions of Jade's independence, clever mind, and pirate bravery she sure whispered a lot. It became abundantly clear Garwood wanted to show Jade in a more tender and subservient manner whenever she was around Caine, because fully half of her statements or questions are followed by "...whispered Jade" even when whispering wasn't necessary or scene-enhancing. It became very annoying to read so many of Jade's lines as whispers.

Contrary to other reviewers I don't think Caine was unnecessarily short-tempered around Jade at all; if anything, he started using too many endearments early on in their relationship and was very patient with her frustrating prattle and lies! (How would you react when you learned your newfound lady love was responsible for burning down your stables?!)

I gave this book three stars because the plot was somewhat entertaining, although saving the big "damsel in distress" scene for the very last few pages of the book made it read like an afterthought. I just "inherited" several Julie Garwood books and I must say, based on Guardian Angel, I'm not overly anxious to read any of her other work (but I will, of course!).

5 out of 5 stars Faboulus..........2006-04-22

Caine the sexy and strong hero is looking for the pirate Pagan one night when this women who he thought was an angel from heaven her beauty walks in and asks him for shocking favored..

Jade the red hair and green eyes beauty walks in to finds Caine there. Jade knew he was going to be there and there was a strong reason she went looking for him. She ask him to do something incredible to her but it was a lie she made up so she could safe his life.

Caine who takes Jade as a refugee he thinks his saving from someone that want to kill her didn't Know that he was the one who was being saved. As this two characters spend more time together they start falling in love with each other and they have wild and passionate nights together. This two characters are extremely likeable and are hard to forget even after you finish reading the story.

This is a magnificant story and the first i read from this author, and it wont be my last. It's a well written story and makes you laugh your. This is a book YOU WANT TO READ. Believe me.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed..........2006-01-31

I am a big Judith McNaught fan and was told to try Julie Garwood because her novels are just as good. I bought Guardian Angel, Ransom and The Bride and decided to give Guardian Angel a whirl first because I like Regency-era romances. Caine, the Marquess of Cainewood, is after a pirate that goes by the name of the Pagan -- a Robin Hood-like ruffian who steals from the rich to help the poor. Caine wants to avenge the death of his brother and will do anything to capture and kill the pirate. He has a plan to pass off as the Pagan in order to anger him and have him expose himself. But when a beautiful and spirited young woman called Jade walks into his life, paying him silver coins to have him kill her, his life isn't the same. Before he knows it, his life becomes a shambles with a great deal of political intrigue and treachery from the woman he vows to protect. There are various twists throughout the novel.

At first, I thought this novel would be a riveting read full of romance and adventure. I also loved the whole pirate angle. Pirates are sexy. Robin Hood types are sexy. Protective and possessive alpha males are sexy. So why am I disappointed? Political aspects monopolized the plot. It takes away from everything else that is supposed to be important in the story, including the romance. Yes, there are plenty of romantic scenes between Caine and Jade, most of which center on a power struggle over each other. I like Jade and her no-nonsense, rebellious and independent personality. While not totally believable given the time frame, she is a breath of fresh air because she is no ninny. That is, of course, until Caine tries to break her spirit at all cost. Caine annoyed me to no end. He is too moody and bossy for my taste. He tries to be the proverbial alpha male, but comes out as someone with a personality disorder instead. His abrupt mood changes from seductive and amused to angry and domineering irritated me. It's a good thing Jade doesn't always put up with him. I know the whole purpose to the story is that he isn't used to someone like Jade, but still -- ugh! I would've liked to read more about piracy and the Pagan himself than see how Caine tries to turn Jade into an "yes, sir" woman. I noticed that this is the spin-off of a previous novel based on the characters Lyon and Christina. From what I read about these characters, I don't think I want to try reading their story. Alas, I was underwhelmed with Garwood and Guardian Angel. I will give the author another shot because I've heard her work is wonderful. I hope I have better luck next time.

3 out of 5 stars Needs less political intrigue, more romance please.......2005-11-04

The year is 1815 and we are introduced to Caine, the Marquess of Cainewood. A government spy on the hunt for the infamous pirate Pagan, whom he assumes killed his brother Colin, Caine is at his usual haunt at a seedy pub in the slums of London where he hopes to catch the pirate, when in walks a beautiful woman who dumps a bag of silver in his lap in exchange for the most outrageous and unheard of request that he has ever heard - for him to murder her. Yet unbeknown to him, Jade has come to him under the pretext of being in grave danger, and Caine is unaware that his hunt for Pagan has reached its end.

When Caine takes Jade under his protection, little does he know what a merry chase he would be involved in, for along with trying to protect Jade from her "would-be" attackers, he finds himself being driven demented by the woman who is quickly stealing his heart. Jade, on the other hand, is learning more things about Caine that was never included in his official government file, things that render her heart vulnerable for the first time in her life. But she knows that she must protect her heart or risk getting hurt by Caine's hatred once he learns of her true identity.

With espionage, piracy and betrayal, one would expect an action-packed roller-coaster ride while reading this novel. Unfortunately, this falls a little short of the expectations. The tangled political intrigue is one that's enough to put a reader off the story - leaving you confused and distracted from the romance between the main characters. As for Caine and Jade, both are likable enough, though I didn't find them as endearing or memorable as other Garwood characters. I feel that more emphasis should have been given on developing the relationship between them. But I did enjoy some of the banter between them, and also laughed at some of the supporting characters (notably Caine's butler and Uncle Harry), and I loved the fact that the hero isn't afraid to declare his love for the heroine. That, for me, is the most wonderful aspect of the book, though these weren't enough to sustain the excitement to make me not want to put the book down.

Overall, GUARDIAN ANGEL didn't leave a lasting impression on me. The first book, THE LION'S LADY, is much better than this one.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2006-03-03

It was a good book, a lot of information, but not quite the kind of information I was looking for. I'm going to try Doreen Virtue's books to see if I can find more detailed and specific information.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2005-11-10

I like this book, it's a big book all devoted to spirit guides and guardian angels, LOTS of usefull information is covered in this book, I read it 4 times so far and it's not boring yet, it's the type of book you want to look over when times are tough. It's a good buy for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Angelic Delight...............2002-08-18

i enjoyed this book tremendously. i read it straight thru..
Webster explains a lot about Angels (especially the Archangels) and spirit guides. He goes into the differences between Angelic helpers and spirit guides and gives meditation exercises to help put you into contact with both. There is one particular ritual in the book for invoking all 4 Archangels that was absolutely wonderful! It was my first experience in working with the Archangels and i definately felt their presence. It was a pure blessing.

i have read many books on Angels and Spirit Guides and do highly reccommend this one, but if you are a beginner, it may be best to read another book first or familiarize yourself (research) the Archangels first.........

Definately a welcomed source to the Angel section of my library..

3 out of 5 stars It was ok.......2002-01-22

I expected a lot more from this book, all the hype I heard from people about it didn't even compare to how poorly I feel it was put together, some of it was cool and his explainations of letters to your angels etc, but all n all it wasn't worth the buy.sorry I hate leaving bad reviews.

Book Description

THE DESTROYER NEVER DIES . . . .

VIVA LA REVOLUCION!

When a dozen border patrol volunteers are murdered in New Mexico, apparent victims of Mexican nationals, Dr. Harold W. Smith of the super-secret agency CURE worries the first salvo in a new border dispute has been fired. His worst fears are realized with the appearance of the charismatic Santa Ana, a uniformed, would-be despot with a silver tongue and a thirst for bloody revolution.
General Santa Anna has redrawn the border between the U.S. and Mexico to fit his own twisted version of reality, and thousands of illegal aliens are drawn to his message of liberation. The Southwest is on fire, and as the revolution explodes the entire nation is at risk. It seems the brazen general has planned for every eventuality. Except one...
Mostly MIA for the past four years, Remo Williams, CURE's one man enforcement arm, has returned to the U.S. just in time to prevent Armageddon. With his Korean mentor Chiun, the Master of Sinanju, at his side, America just might live to see mañana.
But it turns out Santa Anna is not the only threat to The Destroyer. Remo not only must save the United States from civil war, he must square off against the only woman who ever killed him...

4 out of 5 stars Returjn to the good old days.......2007-06-25

They've done it.

I used to buy the destroyer for the satire and the relationship between Remo and Chuin. In the last few years, the books have been way too long and a parody of what they once were. When Murphy stopped having input, the books lost their direction : too may cooks spoiled the soup.

No longer! Remo and Chuin are back and better than ever.Remo is once again, everyman, observing the craziness inherent in PC these days, and doing something about it.

Now, with Warren Murphy shepparding James Mullaney, Chiun's carping is crisp and immortal, Remo is wisecracking, and Smith is dour, and the villains are worthy.

There is a reason that this series has outlasted all except the Executioner books (now endorsed by Michael Savage (that is NOT a compliment) - so check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Back to normal.......2007-06-01

I started reading the Destroyer series with Created, The Destroyer, while I was in the Army. The books were short enough to finish between guard duty tours. They were also well written, funny in a satirical vein and sometimes even thought provoking. Somewhere along the way all the qualities except brevity were lost. Guardian Angel (with the exception of the references to African "bidness") has changed direction back toward the days of Richard Sapir. I hope the improvement continues in the ensuing releases.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection is a road.......2007-05-31

One of the bright spots of The Destroyer movie is when Chiun says, "Perfection is a road - not a destination." This book is perfect, and I hope that this incarnation has a long road ahead. I know that we will all enjoy the ride.
The last several books from Gold Eagle seemed to be pale re-hashes riddled with continuity problems, lame story-lines, bad dialogue, and weak characterization. Warren Murphy helped create the character, and Jim Mullaney was the best writer on the book after he left. The story is topical and fresh, dealing with border security and illegal immigration. The biting satire from the earlier books is back, and it's always fun to match the characters in the book to their real-life counterparts. There are memorable scenes of patriotic heroism from regular citizens, and Remo and Chiun are as phenomenal as ever. The father-son relationship and repartee are back!
The book starts with Remo returning from a period of semi-exile, and it's hard not to see the metaphor in that. This book clicks on all cylinders. Welcome Back, Remo and Chiun! I like to say there's a line in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins for everything, and I'm reminded of the last lines in the movie: "Chiun, you're incredible!" "NO - I AM BETTER THAN THAT!" And they are.

5 out of 5 stars Just like the older Destroyer novels, but longer........2007-05-26

I have all the novels in the Destroyer series and enjoy all but the last dozen or so greatly. I can't recommend this book enough. If you enjoy the older books in the series you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars They're BACK!.......2007-05-16

I started reading this series back around 1973/74. I loved it. Then, somewhere around #125-130 it started downhill. I quit reading it and felt like I had lost some friends. I was browsing a bookstore and saw this title. When I saw James Mullaney's comment about going back to the original I thought "what the heck, it's worth a try." Boy is it! The old chemistry is back! I have thoroughly enjoyed this, and would unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone who, like me, was disillusioned by the "later" books. This is great, my only choice was 5 stars, but I think is deserves more. James Mullaney is a worthy successor to Richard Sapir, and the authors' work comes out as well as Murphy and Sapir. Congratulations and keep the books coming, PLEASE!
