Book Description
"Once upon a time ..." So begin the classic fairy tales that enthralled and terrified us as children. Now, in their third critically acclaimed collection of original fairy tales for adults, World Fantasy Award-winning editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling bring us twenty-one new stories by some of the top names in literature today.
Joyce Carol Oates, Gahan Wilson, Gene Wolfe, Tanith Lee, Neil Gaiman -- these are but a few of the accomplished literary sorcerers who have gathered here to remold our timeless myths into more sensuous and disturbing forms. Like the fabled ruby slippers, there is powerful magic here. Rich witches in trendy resorts cast evil spells ... beautiful princesses age and wither in sleeping worlds ... terrible beasts reside beneath flawless skin.
Dark, disturbing, delightful, each story was written expressly for this superb collection of distinctly grown-up fantasy -- a brilliant companion volume to Datlow and Windling's acclaimed anthologies, Snow White, Blood Red and Black Thorn, White Rose.
Customer Reviews:
Unnecessarily cruel.......2004-05-26
I had read the book Black Thorn White rose before picking up this anthology and had a lot of hopes for this book. I love the retelling of fairy tales even with a dark twist to them. However, some of the stories in this book are absolutely horrific. The Match Girl, in my opinion, does not belong in a collection of fantasy but instead perhaps in one of horror. Its been a week since I read this book and I still have a bad taste left from it!
the best, so far.......2004-01-04
I love the whole Windling/Datlow edited series of fairy tale short stories. This particular book is by far the best one I have read (and I've read them all, to date, Jan 2004). Ellen Steiber's "The Fox Wife" is the best short story I've read in awhile - well worth repeated readings, and even led me to seek out more oriental "fox" tales. Joyce Carol Oates, Neil Gaiman, and Jane Yolen are here, and the editors, for this one collection, have abandoned their informal trademark touch of including that one truly odious story. ALL the stories are of high quality, and if you are a devotee of this genre, you MUST read this one. It's really the best of the bunch! Five stars!
Retellings.......2003-04-06
A great short stories of Fairy Tales for adults.Wonderfully intertaning and an enlighting read.
Anthologies are often difficult..........2002-09-18
...but I found this book overall to be good. I particularly liked 'The Match Girl' (and have since found all of Anne Bishops books to be great!), but I disliked a few of the contemporary stories. Grab it if you enjoyed any of the other anthologies, but no, you're not going to like all of the stories!
Not my favorite.......2001-12-08
I didn't like this as much as _Black Thorn, White Rose_ or _Black Heart, Ivory Bones_, but it wasn't bad. Add a couple of stars for the stunning novella "The Fox Wife", set in Japan, and for the lush and horrible "The Beast," the dark tale of a beautiful man who is not what he seems. Subtract a few for a pair of stories I heartily disliked--"The Match Girl" which seemed an endless litany of pain and torture, and "The Masterpiece", which is well-written but will forever haunt me. I can't believe the heroine could have made the choice she did at the end of this take on "Rumplestiltskin." Yes, that's probably the point, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

How did this book get published?.......2002-06-18
I tried to stay awake from the get go, but the story was slow at the beginning and slower in the middle and the ending didn't make much sense at all.
Maybe for the Younger Reader..........1998-06-03
As a long-time fan of vampire fiction, I have had the opportunity to read many different kinds of novels, shorts, etc. Although "The Ruby Tear" is certainly not one of the worst, it isn't one of the best, either.
The story is pretty mundane; a vampire with a grudge against the family who wiped out his family centuries ago. He wants revenge and the jewel the invaders stole. Of course there is the tragic heroine and star-crossed lover story line. And of course the vampire -- who should be old enough to know better -- falls for the girl and screws up his revenge.
The story moves along but it really is more on the order of a Harlequin Romance than the true vampire genre. Not bad for a snack, but don't expect too much substance.
A wonderful vampire story in a contemporary setting........1998-04-08
He had been dying on the battlefield when the lady appeared to him. They made a deal. She would give him immortal life as a vampire to hunt down his family's traitor and their descendants until the line is wiped out, as well as, retrieve the ruby necklace the traitor had stolen. Afterward, he would do whatever she said. She wanted other's pain and blood.
Nic is the last of his line. He thought the family curse was but a story. But the lady on the white horse appeared to him. He swerved his car to avoid hitting her and nearly killed his fiance. Now he knows the story is true. A gift would appear next to him or his loved one as warning. Then the vampire will show to kill him. Nic knew the men in his family always died tragically. Now he knew why. Once he knew his fiance, Jessamyn would recover, he broke all ties to her. It was the only way to keep her out of the curse. He refused to have children to carry on the curse. It was time to take a stand. Win or be the last to die to the curse.
Jessamyn had recovered from the accident which nearly crippled her. Nic had thrown her love away and would not even accept her calls. Now Nic had written the best play possible about a family curse and an emerald necklace. She wanted the lead part. She was the best actress for the job. But Nic was determined she would have no part in this play. It was bait to lure a vampire. Jessamyn does get the part. Someone is causing accidents to make her leave the play. A gift of old jewelry shows up and a new strange man comes into her life. A man trying to find Nic through her...a dangerous man.
An irresistible variation on the vampire romance........1997-04-22
Under a pen name, Suzy McKee Charnas, author of THE VAMPIRE TAPESTRY, creates a more traditional vampire, with all the Byronic allure of his kind. Whether or not you ordinarily read vampire romances, don't miss this one. A family feud rooted in medieval Eastern Europe gives rise to an unsual vampire-human love triangle. Baron Ivo von Cragga, transformed into one of the undead by the vengeful goddess of his war-torn homeland, devotes his existence to the quest for the Ruby Tear, his family's stolen treasure, now possessed by Nicolas Griffin, journalist and playwright. Jess, an actress, Nic's former lover, becomes the vampire's target in his pursuit of revenge against Nic. Charnas' familiarity with New York and the world of the theater lends realistic detail to the story. Unlike Weyland in THE VAMPIRE TAPESTRY, who confronts the chance to grow toward humanity by embracing his memories of the human friends he has come to care for, Cragga is CUT OFF from humanity by the weight of memory. The bloody history of his native land, with its memories of ancient wrongs, binds him to his vampire nature. Only shedding the burden of the past can offer him hope, just as Nic must find a way to free himself from his family's greed-haunted past. The Ruby Tear functions as a symbol of clinging to timeworn hatreds. Charnas plays unique variations on the vampire romance subgenre, injecting notes of humor amid the suspense and making both the lonely, magnetic vampire and his human rival complex, sympathetic characters. Unlike the conventional romance, this book does not make it easy to predict which man, mortal or vampire, will win the heroine's love. The climax of their conflict, with the resolution of Jess' attraction to both heroes, is surprising as well as satisfying

In A Family of Strangers, She Feared for Her Life!.......2004-11-23
The letter was a godsend. After struggling for so long to make ends meet as a music teacher, Emily Woodstock was astonished to learn that she was the closest living relative to Sir Ralph Woodstock.
Suddenly, poor and lonely Emily was a member of a wealthy family, with Edgecliff Manor as her new home. It was all she had ever dreamed, and upon first meeting her handsome cousin Richard, she wondered if she might find riches of the heart as well.
But when the death of her uncle left Emily the sole heir to his vast fortune, her dream was shattered for she was certain that someone was out to kill her. Surely it wasn't her charming cousing Charles, or their lovely yet aloof neighbor Evonne DeVere. And even the grim-faced housekeeper did not seem capable of murder. That left only Richard, of dark mind and brooding spirit, the man to whom Emily had given her heart. Would he take her life, as well?
