Book Description
There are few authors who can weave nail-biting thrills, edge-of-your-seat drama, and romantic suspense as masterfully as Julie Garwood. Now she ratchets up the tension with Murder List, in which evil is on the hunt– and proves to be methodically organized and chillingly successful.
When Chicago detective Alec Buchanan is offered a prime position with the FBI, it is the perfect opportunity to leave the Windy City and follow in his brothers’ footsteps to the top echelons of law enforcement. But first he must complete one last assignment (and one that he is not too happy about): acting as a glorified bodyguard to hotel heiress Regan Hamilton Madison. The gorgeous exec has become entangled in some potentially deadly business. Someone has e-mailed her a graphic crime-scene photo–and the victim is no stranger.
Regan suspects that the trouble started when she agreed to help a journalist friend expose a shady self-help guru who preys on lonely, vulnerable women. In fact, the smooth-as-an-oil-slick Dr. Lawrence Shields may be responsible for the death of one of his devotees, which was ruled a suicide. Hoping to find some damning evidence, Regan attends a Shields seminar.
At the gathering, the doctor persuades his guests to partake in an innocent little “cleansing” exercise. He asks them to make a list of the people who have hurt or deceived them over the years, posing the question: Would your world be a better place if these people ceased to exist? Treating the exercise as a game, Regan plays along. After ten minutes, Shields instructs the participants to bring their sheets of paper to the fireplace and throw them into the flames. But Regan misses this part of the program when she exits the room to take a call–and barely escapes a menacing individual in the parking lot.
The experience is all but forgotten–until the first person on Regan’s list turns up dead. Shock turns to horror when other bodies from the list start to surface, as a harrowing tango of desire and death is set into motion. Now brutal murders seem to stalk her every move–and a growing attraction to Alec may compromise her safety, while stirring up tender emotions she thought she could no longer feel. Yet as the danger intensifies and a serial killer circles ever closer, Regan must discover who has turned her private revenge fantasies into grisly reality.

Customer Reviews:
I found this book entertaining.......2007-05-18
Julie Garwood and Judith McNaught are my all time favorite authors. This book was entertaining, but of course nothing compares to Garwood's earlier novels. When she started writing contemporary stories they lacked a bit of the former thrill, even so, I still liked this book and really like the Buchanen men. Same with McNaught, Paradise is excellent! Perfect, Double Standards, but her newest books almost seem to be written by another author. Read the earlier books on both of these authors and you wont' be dissapointed.
Murder List.......2007-05-09
I thought this novel was fast-paced and had an interesting group of characters. I enjoyed it very much.
A Dismal Waste of Time.......2007-03-23
This was the first book I picked up by this prolific "author" (and I use that term loosely)and it was a slam-dunk disappointment all the way around. The writing was pitiful--untrained and obviously unedited. Her POV was all over the place, literally changing voices from paragraph to paragraph. Her characters were cardboard cutouts that resembled the creations of other, more talented authors, and failed to come alive or even speak like normal humans.
I read it because I was led to believe (by the cover) that it was a thriller/mystery. It was solely a romance novel--the "mystery" elements were tacky and commonplace, and secondary to the badly-told love story.
The heroine, Regan, acts like she is fifteen years old, as do her two girlfriends. The Hero, a cop named Alec, while just as cardboard and predictable, was inserted only for the purpose of falling in love with Regan. The element of his brothers also being in law enforcemnt seemed to me to be a direct copy of Mariah Burke's family in an excellent and thriling series she has fashioned.
Indeed, every element of this novel seemed as if it were copied from other writers and then put together piecemeal. The novel starts out with a subplot about a charismatic self-help guru, then suddenly that plot is shoved to the back burner while we go off on another plot where a demented psycho is trying to murder Regan. The "guru" subplot never really goes anywhere--it simply fizzles out. The psycho chasing Regan is inept and certainly not menacing at all--he's just a jerk. No, he's a device to get Regan alone with her cop/bodyguard--which just, coincidentally, he becomes--imagine that!
It's a quirk of mine, but I always read the entire novel, even if I'm not liking it, so I read it all, every last, poorly-writen page, and I can tell you: don't waste your time! This book offers nothing to no one.
Loved Murder List.......2007-03-18
I absolutely loved Murder List. I had been looking at it for a while in the stores and finally bought it from Amazon.com and while it only took a week to read it - I loved it. I love most of Julie Garwood's books but this continuation of a family story was really good. It can be read alone, but when I found out it was a part of a set of books starting w/ the Heartbreaker and including Mercy then I knew I had to read it. And was not disappointed - if you like Julie Garwood you will like this book. Again it can be read alone but the enjoyment is increased if you also read the other books loosely connected to it.
Great Read.......2007-03-17
I think this a great read! I'm a fan of her historical romance and am delighted to discover that she writes a thriller/romance almost as well. I loved her characters in this novel and the plot twists will keep you thinking the whole time through. I read this book cover-to-cover in one sitting. . . couldn't put it down! Nice read for a rainy day.

Book Description
At about 9 o’clock on the morning of November 9, 1971, soon after sending her three children off to school, Helen List sat in the kitchen drinking a cup of coffee. She was still in her nightgown and slippers. John List came up behind her and put a 9mm German-made Steyr automatic pistol to the side of her head and fired once. She died instantly. The bullet smashed into the opposite wall. John made his way up the stairs to the third floor where his 85-year old mother, Alma, wearing a housedress, was preparing breakfast in her efficiency kitchen…She was standing near the storage room that adjoined her kitchen when a 9mm bullet ripped through the side of her scull. Alma List was dead before her body crumpled in a heap on the floor…the righteous carnage had begun.

The true story of a brutal monster.......2007-04-15
On November 9th, 1971 a monster came alive in an elegant mansion in an exclusive New Jersey town called Westfield and cold-bloodedly murdered his entire family. Then, with the corpses for company, he had a little dinner, washed the dishes, and went upstairs to sleep.
'Righteous Carnage' is the true story of John Emil List, a quiet and mild mannered accountant who systematically murdered his mother, his wife, and his own three children. He walked away the next day, and managed to elude police for eighteen years before the TV show 'America's Most Wanted' flushed him out of his hiding place. While his family rotted, List created a new life and even remarried, enjoying his freedom.
One of the more gruesome pieces of evidence in this case is a letter left by John List addressed to his pastor, in which he confesses to killing his family. This book contains that entire letter, plus the lengthy sentencing by Judge Wertheimer, along with eight pages of black-and-white photos.
While the story is extremely interesting, and the authors cover all the angles, there are times that the prose drags and some of the writing takes on the feeling of being "filler". Overall, if you're a fan of true crime, this book is a must-have for collector, being the story of a true monster who walks among us. Enjoy!
This tragedy devasted our lovely town.......2006-09-16
I grew up in Westfield, NJ and belonged to the same theater group Pat the daughter (one of the victims) in this tragedy did. This event deeply affected my life. My sister's best friend lived accross the street and my father had the same occupation John List had, I lived two streets away. The judge in the case noted that this had a profound impact on the youth in Westfield as the kids contemporary's must have felt that perhaps they too could suffer the same fate as the List children. I remember this event being the wake up call of lost innocence and our idyllic hometown was forever changed. The desperation Mr List experienced was unbearable, but his selfish act is still unthinkable. An even more compelling read when it is part of one's personal history.
A wonderful read!!.......2005-03-12
This is one of the best true crime stories I have ever read. The thing that I like about it, is it dosen't sugar coat the facts, and doesn't dismiss John List of his crimes. It does however paint a picture of a man who had his life spin out fo control. On one hand, you feel sorry for Mr. List, but under no curcumstances can you dismiss his actions. A POWERFUL read!
Presents a chilling tell with objective information.......2001-09-05
I purchased the book after seeing a story about these murders on a TV news program. I was prepared to think John List is just a horrible, cold-hearted monster. The authors do not sugar coat the facts. However, they do present the murderer as a multi-faceted individual whose life spun out of control. I wouldn't call the book spell-binding or riveting. It is easy to read and interesting. I appreciated the lack of sensationalism and bias. A good story about a tragic event.
Hometown.......2001-06-20
I actually grew up in Westfield and remember (though just barely) when these murders actually took place. The authors definitely know the area well and use this knowledge to involve the readers in every detail. When I was a boy, we used to dare each other to run up to the house. It's definitely a piece of true-crime history and one that is described very well here.

Book Description
In Denver, Colorado, down and out waitress Billiemae Waller must become an amateur sleuth when her neighbor, Amelia, is murdered - and Billiemae is the primary suspect!
Customer Reviews:
Fun 3 1/2 stars.......2002-06-29
Not many black folks lived in Denver. Of the ones that did, they all seemed to know each other somehow. They were relatives, past lovers, past spouses, or thinking of becoming lovers. Amelia Benson knew more about them than they would ever have believed. For that reason, she was killed and more would die.
Billiemae had not killed Amelia. But the police sure wanted to point the finger at her. Pharaoh had been trying to help her find out who really did it and why. He was also trying to help out Maris, who was married to an abusive husband.
Rick, the husband, knew of the past between Maris and Pharaoh. When Maris had enough of the beatings, she left Rick. Rick had too much falling apart around him and Maris's leaving caused his sanity to snap!
*** A suspense filled murder mystery that will draw its readers into its twisted plot and keep them on the edge of their seats! I am hoping for a sequel! ***
Full of Fun.......2002-05-19
This is a delightful first mystery. The ditzy but good hearted heroine, Billiemae makes a mistake that drops her and her love interest Pharoah into a murder mystery. I really enjoyed this quirky, clever book. I'm now waiting for the next Alice Holman book. I want to see more Billimae!
...
A Quirky Mystery.......2002-05-06
A wonderful quick read, murder that happend or did it? A Bumbling set of fiends who are trying to save each other. Detectives falling over themselves. Mix it all together and we have you laughing, crying, and wanting to punch someone in minutes. Ms Holman keeps us on our toes trying to decide what next. A light mystery sprinkle with a hint a abuse. Looking for a little fun this is the book for you.
Quirky Enjoyable Read....More like 3.5 stars.......2002-04-20
Last Days Murder list starts a little slow but once it picks up steam you're in for an enjoyable ride. Alice Holman's debut novel is full of quirky humor and good characterizations. Two favorite characters are Billie and Pharoah both are very unique and well developed . Billie is a very caring and bright woman but works and a waitress and seems content to live in poverty. This case causes her to take a good introspective look at her life and the paths she has chosen. Pharoah is a guy who seems to have it all together;he's good looking, reliable, financially solvent but his love life is a complete mess. Working this murder with Billie puts him on the right track to getting love figured out too.
Billie and Pharoah are a rather unlikely pair of amateur sleuths but I thoroughly enjoyed the insider view of their planning, plotting and investigating trying to find a killer that is
systematically murdering their friends and acquaintances. As they get closer to the truth a few unsavory things are uncovered, things you never imagined were taking place in this
quaint little city.
Who killed Amelia Benson?.......2001-09-04
I never thought it was Pharaoh, but wonder if Maris had known about Rick and she did it.
This was a great murder mystery book. A great book for book clubs. Can't wait to read Alice Holman next book.
