5 out of 5 stars Why Are So Many Black Men In Prison? A Comprehensive Account Of How And Why The Prison Industry Has Become A Predatory Entity In.......2007-06-09

The book was very interesting. I learned soooo much about the government and the prison industry. I did some searching independantly to check on the things reported in the book and they are very true. Great Read!! Buy the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-05-25

Mr. Demico's book is a must-read for anyone concerned about young African American men. Although I did not agree with every conclusion he reached, Demico's main premises are convincing. As a white woman who teaches mainly students of color, I am always impressed, and often in awe, of those young men who reach college with so much going against them. Demico's books lays bare not only the horrible inequalities of our society, but also the racist attitudes of our political system - - Democrats, Republicans, and most everyone in between.

5 out of 5 stars why are so many black men NOT in prison.......2007-05-17

THAT really is the question; think about it.

5 out of 5 stars Why are so many Black Men in Prison?.......2007-05-13

I is a well put together book. He really goes into a lot of detail of how our society is really set up.

5 out of 5 stars Should be read by all African-Americans...............2007-03-17

This book comes right on time to address the question of the shocking black male incarceration trends and the political links to it, and does a good job of it. ALL YOUNG BLACK MEN SHOULD NOT JUST READ BUT STUDY THIS BOOK. The information contained in this book is invaluable and the statistics eye-opening. I also encourage all African-American females with young men in their surroundings, whether sons or husbands or family members, to read this book. Today's prison industry in America is the modernized plantation and is being used as a societal tool of containment for young black men, and there is no doubt about that when you objectively look at the statistics and numbers. Everyone across the country has been asking the question of why so many black men are going to prison moreso than college nowadays, and I think this book does a very good job of explaining it. Very, very good book.

The increased use of private policing has led to a growing awareness that policing can no longer be thought of as just being about crime, but as the enforcement of order and the way it can be both established and maintained. Private Policing charts the development of social control mechanisms -- both public and private -- from historical, legal, ethical and managerial perspectives.

            Book Description

American prisons and jails are overflowing with inmates. To relieve the pressure, courts have imposed fines on overcrowded facilities and fiscally strapped governments have been forced to release numerous prisoners prematurely. In this study, noted criminologist Charles Logan makes the case for commercial operation of prisons and jails as an alternative to the government's monopoly. On philosophical, economic, legal, and practical grounds, Logan argues a compelling case for the private and commercial operation of prisons. He critically examines all objections raised by opponents, and concludes that while private prisons face many potential problems, they do so primarily because they are prisons, not because they are private. Historically, the record of private ownership and operation of corrections facilities has been bleak--ridden with political corruption, physical abuse of prisoners, and the single-minded pursuit of profits. This study demonstrates that this need not be the case. Critiquing the tendency to contrast private prisons with a hypothetical ideal, Logan instead compares them with existing public institutions, arguing that the potential problems attributed to private prisons are experienced by their public counterparts. The work examines ten sets of issues, including the propriety, cost, security, and quantity of prisons, to set out a strong case for the viability of proprietary prisons.

3 out of 5 stars There is potential for this series to be a favorite.......2007-06-19

This is my first Peter Diamond novel and although I had a rather difficult time becoming engaged with his character and the story, I did manage to finish the book and enjoyed it. I like that Diamond searches long and hard to find the guilty party, even after he realizes that he was responsible for having the wrong person convicted. In parts he is a bit too "old school" for me (turns his nose up at the value of computers, for example) but I think it's part of his curmudgenly persona.

The town of Bath provides a great background for the mystery surrounding a murder, leading to another murder and a kidnapping.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Diamond is Back........2003-11-29

I can't believe that I'm the first person to review this book. For those readers who love British procedurals, I can't believe that you haven't discovered Peter Diamond! Lovesey's character is the most emgaging you will find in a month of Sundays. In this third book in the series, Peter Diamond is summoned back to Bath CID to help capture a killer that he had had put away 4 years ago. Apparently, this killer had pulled off an escape from prison, and kidnapped the daughter of a policeman high up in the CID in order to get Diamond to prove his innocence of the crime that he had put him away for. Diamond teams up with Julie Hargreaves and they manage to outwit all the CID and the Bath police force and determine that this ex-convict was indeed innocent. Then they have the job of proving who actually did the crime, and let me tell you, it was a real surprise to me. Diamond is a gem, and I love this series.

5 out of 5 stars he shows how to get the bad guys.......1999-05-19

This book is awesome. All the bad guys get NAILED! This guy had these taser guns and one time this baddie was trying to get away and he got him! There was another time when the baddie tried to erase his trail but our bounty-hunter was too smart and figured out the baddie was really not on his way to Denver but smoking weed at some budget hotel just outside of Cincinatti. OUr bounty hunter handcuffed the baddie who had passed out on the floor and the cops came and our bounty hunter reaped a fat check. How about that!

3 out of 5 stars generalized overview. This book needs to be more specific........1998-06-18

"The Advanced Bounty Hunter"?!? I Don't think so. Reading this title leads the reader to believe that Bob Buton is going to share his nitty gritty know how with the readers. Instead Burton shares many a story from yester-year. While entertaining, these stories do not get into the specifics one needs, to be sucessfull as an Advanced Bounty Hunter. Burton touchs on some very important subjects, yet chapter after chapter Burton leaves you short changed. For example, One chapter called "The arrest" does a good job at teaching what handcuffs are for and which ones to buy; but tells you nothing of good, sound arrest techniques.Or how to even use handcuffs. After all, one does not simply put handcuffs on a six foot four, two hundred twenty pound wanted felon. "Bail Enforcment Academy" By Eric Davis is a much better teaching tool. Davis goes into much greater detail on every subject Burton covers and even some he fails to cover. "Bail Enforcer" was somewhat disappointing givin Burton's experience.
