Book Description
This new book is carefully designed to teach C language programming as it applies to embedded microcontrollers and to fuel knowledge in the application of the Microchip® family of PIC® microcontrollers. Coverage begins with a step-by-step exploration of the C language showing readers how to create C language programs to solve problems. PIC processors are then studied, from basic architecture to all of the standard peripheral devices included in the microcontrollers. Numerous worked-out example programs demonstrate common uses for each of the peripherals. Readers are subsequently introduced to the built-in functions available in C, to help speed their programming and problem solving. Finally, readers are taken through use of the C Compiler, and learn to efficiently develop custom projects.

A rare tutorial for using C on the PIC.......2007-01-22
Unlike most PIC books which focus on coding in assembler, this book uses the CCS C compiler for all of its examples. It provides simple solid C examples that show what needs to be done. An embedded C tutorial in the front of the book reviews the language. Excercises (With some solutions in an appendix) at chapter end help you know what you understood and where you need more work. The appendix of library functions repeats what is available in the CCS help so I did not find it useful. Maybe it would be to someone who didn't have the compiler. Overall, this book helped me find how to do what I needed to with a minimum of reading irrelevant information and that's really the highest praise I can give to an instructional book. I recomend this book to any experienced programmer who wants to get started with PIC development.
Doesnt worth its price.......2005-04-26
Provided you have NO knowledge on C programming and microcontroller, otherwise you dont really need this book. I personally think that big portion of contents could be found in CCS's manual and sample code FREE.
Anyway, this book is more readable than the manual as it is more well-arranged, together with some explanation and diagram. This could be helpful to beginner with NO prior knowledge on embedded C programming.
Excelent book for a Newbie!.......2004-02-19
For a Newbie on PIC C programming like me, this is really an excellent book. It teaches C language programming, helping the reader to create an entire program (step-by-step). Also, the reader can understand the PIC architecture and learn how use a C compiler (like CCS C). Finally, the reader can learn and try to implement a complete project using microcontrollers. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking to make a travel through the field of microcontrollers and embedded programming.
A very good Text Book.......2003-11-28
A very good textbook for undergraduate learning MCU programming. This book is based on CCS C complier, a step-by-step guide from basic C programming to project planning.

Customer Reviews:
What an excellent book ..........2007-01-22
I have only just started programming with AVR and was looking for a book that would help me. After reading other reviews I decided to buy this book - and I'm glad that I did.
It starts off with an introduction to embedded C, moves on to discuss the Atmel AVRs and concludes with a chapter on developing a project from scratch. But, what's good is that it starts off from the basics with plenty of explanations (so if you've never done anything with AVRs before, then this is for you), and moves on to the complex stuff later.
The book covers almost every topic you would want, so you can always use the book as a reference later. There is a comprehensive Appendix in the back too which lists the various C functions and Atmel instruction sets.
My only complaint is that the book dedicates to much space on the CodeVision C Compiler (there is a whole chapter on using the IDE, and several references are made to it throughout the book). It's a pity that there is no mention of the AVR-GCC Compiler - since it's free!!
Overall, this is an excellent book, that I would definately recommend to anyone starting off with programming the Atmel AVR microprocessors.
Read these reviews for general info as they may refer to the first edition!.......2007-01-04
Hi folks!
It's amazing how reviews dated months (or years) prior to the publication date of a new edition got added here. I do own the earlier edition and find it to be *exactly* what I needed to both ramp up my knowledge of embedded C processing and learn the AVR micro.
Now we have this new edition that just might overcome some of the valid criticisms of the reviewers as well as bring the explanations up to date for the newer processors. Or it might not. . .. An update review would be helpful as I don't want to spend $90 to get the same book with a different cover. Ahhh! Amazon's return policy. I'll order the new one and either write an update review or send it back. Nice!
UPDATE!
Well, I ordered the new edition. . .. Here's the scoop: the authors have updated the chip used in the examples to the Mega16 (and sometimes the Mega128) so this is a good thing as there have been significant changes in the naming of internal registers, etc. since the first edition was written. There are some short additions here and there (e.g. a two-page section on I2C) and "Lab problems" in addition to the exercises at the end of each chapter. The new book is thirty pages longer, but somewhat thinner than the first ed.
So, if you're a bit of a newbie (like me) and are using a particular chip (like the Mega16 as I was) this edition is well worth the cost as it tracks the chip internals closely in the descriptions. If you are "just looking," maybe a used first edition will answer 99% of your questions for 50% of the price. In either case, the explanation of embedded C in the first 80 pages of the book is superb! There is also an excellent project example--start to finish--that ties it all together.
Great for Beginners and as a reference for Advanced Programmers.......2005-12-11
In a word, this book is Awesome! It takes the reader through beginner to advanced programming of the AVR in C and provides an extensive list of projects while remaining just abstract enough to allow the reader to translate the code and concepts into many different but similar real-world problems. The first section also provides a quick recap on basic C programming for people (like me) who program infrequently enough in C to forget basic concepts.
You can find more AVR info at http://www.hobbyrobotics.org/avr.htm
Good book.......2005-09-23
Perfect book to help make transition from assembly language to C.
Best if you know about internal micro peripherals and a little C but I stumbled along despite never having used C.
Too Much / Not Enough.......2005-09-21
I bought both this book and the C Programming for Microcontrollers book by Joe Pardue. This book would be acceptable, maybe even good if not compared to the other book. This book has a short 'tutorial' introduction to C even thought the title implies that it is about C. The Pardue book is entirely about C as used in micros. This book uses an expensive commercial compiler. The Pardue book uses the free WinAVR compiler (included on the CD). This book uses expensive and confusing (to me) development systems. The Pardue book uses the AVR Butterfly which only costs $19.99 and has everything you'd want and is simple to use. This book goes into a lot of details on stuff that I guess would be of use for filling time a college course and if you are an academic type you might like that. The Pardue book starts out holding your hand, but quickly becomes brief in getting you going with fun projects that help with my real real world interests. Finally this book costs more than the Pardue book costs with the Butterfly and the full projects kit thrown in. Yeah, the Pardue book has some typos, but an error sheet is included so that's no big deal. I wish I had saved my money and just gotten the Pardue book, an AVR Butterfly and the projects kit

Book Description
The Brewster B-339 Buffalo received much criticism during its brief service with the RAF, some justified, some not. Some of the pilots who eventually flew it in combat were happy with their mounts, others hated it as an operational fighter.
Rightly considered below par for service in the UK, the vast majority of the 170 aircraft acquired by the RAF Purchasing Commission from the United States was diverted for use in the Far East, where it was believed they would be superior to any Japanese aircraft encountered should hostilities break out there.
This assessment was to prove tragically very incorrect. When war did erupt, the Japanese Army Air Force - with its highly maneuverable Ki-27 and Ki-43 fighters - and the Japanese Navy Air Force equipped with the mighty A6M Zero, proved vastly superior in just about all aspects, and many of the Japanese fighter pilots were veterans of the war against China.
By contrast, the majority of the young British, New Zealand, and Australian pilots who flew the Buffalo on operations in Malaya and at Singapore were little more than trainees, and many flew into battle with only the basic training of their trade.
Nonetheless, these fledgling fighter pilots achieved much greater success than could have been anticipated, although many paid with their lives.
This is their story, complete with appendices and previously unpublished source material and photographs.

Day-by-day account of a hopeless fight.......2005-09-10
Written after delving directly into the Squadrons' archives, this book is made up of the reports and recollections of the RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and ML-KNIL pilots who flew the Buffalo against the Japanese in the early stages of the Second World War. Air operations by other units are only mentioned in relation to them. There is not much in the way of analysis or comments (in fact, there is little actually written by the authors), but you get first-hand, day-by-day accounts of the flying operations undertaken by the men within the 243, 453, 488 RNZAF and 21 RAAF, and some from the Dutch pilots from 1-, 2- and 3-V1G-V. Written in the almost casual, careless style so typical of fighting soldiers and airmen, they convey a sensation of approaching disaster which is hard to match. There is a very interesting photo section made up of the very few period pictures existing. Appendices show the complete Buffalo victory claims, the casualties, the fate of every single airframe, some useful maps as well as some individual recollections. Probably the most detailed look on the operations undertaken by Allied Buffalo operators, and an indispensable component of any book collection dedicated to the Pacific war.
Thank God for People Like Cull.......2005-03-10
This book is a real delight. Take and obscure fighter aircraft flown by Commonwealth Air Units in Malaya and Singapore, combine it with an absolutely hopeless battle and you have the makings of a great read.
The Buffalo fighter has won the appelation of "the worst aricraft ever manufactured." Cull proves that although obsolete before it was even delivered to RAAF, RNAF and Netherlands East Indies units in S.E. Asia, it was clearly not a complete washout. Having read numerous works on the fall of Singapore and Malaya I had assumed that the Buffaloes were simply swept from the sky in the one fell swoop. It is amazing to learn that some units actually gave as well as they got from the Japanese.
There are actually some confirmed kills of Japanese Naval Zeros!!!
The fighter leaked oil along the crank seals, was underpowered, slow, and most times the .50 machine guns would not fire most of the time. But on the other side of the equation, the aircaft, because of it weight, was fast in a dive an robust (your chances of coming out of belly landing were good as Cull renumerates in many accounts).
They were largely unloved by their crews, and they could not stand up to even a Japanese dive bomber in aerial combat.
It becomes clear that the fighter may have been capable if it had been better flight tested, uparmed, up-poowered. But even then it would still be outclassed by the Japanese fighters.
Cull recounts numerous aerial combats with great detailed accounts from most of the suviving Australian, British and NZ pilots.
There is a lot here. One is struck by the fact that British were so bamboozled by the Japanese aerial supremacy that they convinced themselves that they were actually fighting Germans and claimed engagements with numerous Me-109s??! The shock that Asians were really much, much better as pilots, had much better equipment was simpley too much for them to believe.
There are also larger issues that Cull does not explore, but these books offer wonderful jumping off points for further study.
Cull's latest.......2004-06-11
This is another in a series of books written by Brian Culls, Christopher Shores, or another of the latest generation of WWII aviation historians from Grub Street who are begetting comprehensive histories of often little explored WWII aerial arenas. The aerial defense of Singapore has been largely neglected by historians. Often, when one of these writers publishes, there is little left to explore on the topic. Cull's research isn't quite up to that standard in this volume. This is due in part to the fact that his subjects lost the battle and, thus, many of their records. (Ever wonder what the battle history of Japan's 68th Sentai at New Guinea was?) Japanese records don't exactly abound either. Nonetheless, he does an excelent job and I recommend this work mightily to anyone interested in the Pacific air war.

Propaganda on Propaganda.......2007-05-18
After reading Nicholas John Cull's "Selling War" (1996), I was happy to see that he had authored a subsequent book. I commend his efforts and those of his colleagues to produce an encyclopedia on propaganda and mass persuasion. As a former lecturer in European Modern History, I liked the introduction by David Welch, Director of the Centre for the Study of Propaganda at the University of Kent until he failed to question the U.S. government's conspiracy theory in which they alleged that 19 Arabs carried out the twin towers attack on September 11, 2001. Much to the dismay of the 9/11 truth movement, Welch failed to consider the likelihood of another "Reichstag fire". David Ray Griffin's "The New Pearl Harbor" (2004), available at Amazon, addresses the many holes in the government's conspiracy theory, suggesting a faction within the U.S. government itself orchestrated the attacks and blamed it on Arabs.
After identifying a real phenomenon--the fakery of "information" by government, the authors' attempts to catalog government propaganda are irritating in their omissions. For example, there are entries for "Propaganda, Defintions of" (p322) and "Psychological Warfare" (p323). But there is no entry for 'information warfare' or even 'Hollywood' - propagandists who played a major role in Cull's book "Selling War". Further omissions are noted within the definitions where there are entries. For example, under Cull's entry "Iran", he tells us "...in 1953 the United States, which had now succeeded Britain as the dominant foreign power in the country, stepped in, with the CIA backing a coup to restore the shah to power" (p185). All true, but he neglects to tell us that Ayatollah Khomeini had been stashed in France by CIA as a backup man in the event that the shah could not maintain his grip on Iran. When Khomeini did take over after the shah was ousted by the Iranian people, Cull does not tell us that his takeover was orchestrated by Khomeini's U.S. bosses. Khomeini's Islamic rhetoric duped many, but tens of thousands of Iranians were not duped and had to flee. Cull does not tell us that Khomeini's "Great Satan" speeches directed against the U.S. were little more than PSYOPS upon the Iranian people to camouflage the fact that U.S. AWACs helped Iranian F-4 fighters against Iraqi MIGs from 1980-88, surveillance sites on the Soviet/Iran border were still being maintained, and oil flowed to Europe and Japan. In short, if one was to plug their ears and trust their eyes, little changed in Iran from shah to Khomeini where Western interests were concerned. Cull's entry for "Terrorism, War on (2001-)" is a disappointing rehash of government propaganda. Nowhere does Cull tells us that a faction within the U.S. government pulled the twin towers and Building 7, which housed the CIA's New York Section office, after flying commercial airliners into them. Readers are not told that Marvin Bush was in charge of security at the Twin Towers, or that the power went off for one hour on 9/10, which was ample time to plant the explosive devices that took down the towers. Stanley Hilton, a former aide to Repubican Senator Bob Dole, collected affadavits from witnesses who heard the bombs go off, then claimed someone broke into his office and stole them. The government blew up the Twin Towers and blamed it on Arabs and Afghans, but Cull pretends that governments do not do such things.
Much of Cull's problem in separating truth from propaganda is that he relies on secondary sources. Doesn't Cull know that CIA publishes thousands of text books and other so-called authoritative books to keep the general public, even the intelligentsia, from knowing what is really going on? Congressman Frank Church uncovered that aspect of CIA's information warfare back in the '70s. Why is Al-Qa'idah known as Al-CIA-dah? Cull has repeated so much propaganda here that his encyclopedia, rather than distinguishing propaganda from fact, is more propaganda. I don't know why he succumbed to this. Perhaps when he was giving lectures to the British military, he was made to sign the Official Secrets Act and he can no longer say what the government did without facing some gaol time. Given my expectations, this book was a disappointment.

Book Description
This is the story of the Allied air campaign across Singapore, Malaya, Burma, Ceylon and the Philippines during World War II. It documents the Allied underestimation of Japanese ability, which led to the destruction of 50% of the British bomber force in two days.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent work for the serious historian.......2007-06-26
When you read this book a good historian or soldier comes away with the two lessons: there is nothing like unity of command in military operations and no substitute for good training. This book covers day-to-day military operations in the South Pacific area. There is a second to none index which gives the names of nearly every allied figheter pilot and all significan events in the South Pacific area. It's staggering to read and that alone should rate the book three stars. I can't add that this book did a fantastic job of telling me how "the Brits, Aussies, Dutch, and Americans make a 'muck' up of things." In less than 30 days in most instances the Allied airpower was reduced down to near nothing. The second rate aircraft and second rate training the allied pilots received made them no match for the excellent aviatiors that flew for Japan. Once again, this book gives a day to day account of the results of the wretched defensive air force operations conducted by the Allies at the start of WWII. All in all this book covers about the first 90 days of the Pacific war. I knocked off a star from the book. Why? I know aircraft but a person who does not know Zeros, Buffalos, Hurricanes, P-26 Peashooters, P-35s, P-36, and P-40 aircraft might not know what the author is talking about. An index of aircraft and a performance chart would have been nice. Also, once in a while the author will confuse the caption of a P-40A or B with a P-40E. It's not a huge mistake but can be somewhat distracting from this generally fantastic work on the first 30 days of the Pacific war.
4 Stars and it really should be 4.5 Stars. Yes, it's that good.
Best Book of its kind.......2006-04-13
The book details the initial air operations over SE Asia at the beginning of the war. There is a good chapter on the initial encounters over the Philippines, but the emphasis is on the far vaster involvement of the Dutch and British Commonwealth against the initial Japanese onslaught.
There is a fair amount of Japanese translated documents used and encounters are cross-referenced to check claims and who actually was involved. This makes it virtually the first of its kind.
There are a few surprises. The RAF and Commonwealth forces were outnumbered, undertrained, ill-equipped and dubiously led, but they did inflict a little more punishment on the Japanese than we give them credit for. The Buffalo was not as widely despised as one would expect... pilots were more hoping for an upgrade or the machine, better machine guns, a more reliable engine. I had the impression that these planes fell in every combat with the Japanese. They did, but they also do have some credits for kills, even for some Navy A6Ms (Zeros), which one is surprised to learn.
Lots of heroism here, as British, Australian, New Zealanders, Indians and Canadians and Americans (in either RAF or RCAF uniforms) take on Japan's best aces.
A ripping read!
Details Tell the Story.......2003-02-28
Bloody Shambles is an extraordinarily detailed study of the utter futility of the first months of the war in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. While providing little overview or narrative, the detail of the experiences speak for themselves. Inadequate equipment, both, quality and quantitative, flying procedures designed more for regimental show than for effect, and a complete lack of cooperation between services, were the hallmarks of the impending disaster.
The loss of the British battleships, Repulse and Prince of Wales, are examples of the short service life that was awaiting those who took a cavalier attitude towards the power and complexities of managing air assets. When combined with a lack of coherent intelligence, the impossible situation of the British High Command is felt as much as understood. Given Churchill¡¦s widely quoted disparaging remarks at the lack of ¡§fight¡¨ put into the defense of Singapore, the details point to more insidious reasons. Most notably, almost no air defense was anticipated for Singapore¡¦s defense. The collapse of the Malay Peninsula put Japanese artillery within easy range of Singapore¡¦s defenders and the inability to respond to the daily air attacks were the coup de grace to the morale of the island.

A Foreigh View.......2007-01-08
This book is a airman's view of the buildup of the air forces around the Sinai Desert and Suez Canal from roughtly the end of World War II to the military intervention by Britain and France against the Egyptians in 1956.
That intervention was politically a disaster as the Government back home had no real strategic goal and the objections of America and Russia ruined what little chance there was of military success. From an airman's point of view, however, this was a clean, well faught battle. The equipment being used was largely that in the air forces right at the end of the war as well as the first generation of aircraft from right after the war. This means the latest versions of Spitfires, Mustangs and Corsairs, British Meteors, Russian MIG 15's and 17's, American F-80 and F-84's, and of course some C-47's and PBY Catalinas.
The story is told from mostly first hand accounts and is accompanied by about 200 pictures, mostly never seen before. This is a little known action in an area that has become well known for violence.
An Incredible Piece of Reference on the Suez Crisis.......1998-04-10
This book is a must read for anyone who is the least bit interested in the history of the world. So much of today's strife can be traced back to this little conflict, but if you ask the majority of people out there, they couldn't even tell you who the participants were. This book tells everything, and leaves no stone unturned. Taking up where the author's previous book Spitfires over Israel left off, this book covers the lead up to the conflict, with viewpoints taken from all the main participants. The British, French, Israeli and Egyptian points of view are all shown, and the power struggle for control of the whole Middle East is brought out in this riveting book. If you are fascinated by any one of these countries, or the Middle East in general, you should add this title to your library immediately.

Book Description
At the beginning of 1941, the strategically vital port of Tobruk and its Allied garrison was under siege from Rommel's troops and the Luftwaffe and Italian Regia Aeronautica. The only air defence standing in the way was a handful of RAF Hurricane pilots, supported by their RAAF and SAAF colleagues. Until the last remaining Hurricanes were forced to withdraw from the garrison at the end of April 1941, this gallant band had flown daily against overwhelming odds while Rommel's troops attempted to penetrate the garrison's defences, defended mainly by unyielding Australian forces.
It was a life and death affair, a desperate period in which the name of Tobruk made world headlines. Whoever controlled Tobruk controlled the central Mediterranean.
The Squadrons involved in this titanic struggle were 73 RAF, 6 RAF, 274 RAF, 3 RAAF and 1 SAAF, with 73 Squadron bearing the brunt of the action until forced to evacuate when the German Messerschmitts arrived. There were many unsung heroes from these Squadrons - men like Peter Wykeham-Barnes, Ginger Murray, Smudger Smith, Mike Beytagh, Dickie Martin, Owen Lamb, Tom Patterson, Noel Agazarian, John Elsworth, Bill Wills, the Free Frenchmen, James Denis, Albert Littolf and many, many more.
By carefully studying records and diaries, Brian Cull and Don Minterne have written a well researched action-packed account of these months and these men, which is a fitting tribute to their magnificent contribution to the war.

Book Description
During the summer months of 1944, a daily onslaught by V-1 jet-propelled flying bombs, heading for London and southern England, was countered in the skies of Kent and Sussex.
To the pilots, British press, and bewildered public, Hitler's 'secret weapons' became known variously as Divers, Buzz Bombs, Flying Bombs, Doodlebugs, Dingbats, Robots, Jet-Ships, P-Planes, Witches and even Farting Furies. But they were dangerous, with thousands of civilians losing their lives.
Launched from the Pas de Calais in France, the V-1s came in over the Channel at between 1,000 and 2,000 feet at speeds approaching 400 mph. They proved a difficult target to intercept, much less to bring down. However, many fighter pilots did become 'aces', one alone accounting for 60 of them. By March 1945, when the aerial bombardment ended, a staggering 10,000 V-1s had been launched (including 1,500 from the air). However, with 42 per cent being destroyed by the defenses, half of these alone by the RAF, it is clear tens of thousands of people were saved.
In this significant work, respected historians detail every known success by the defending pilots of over 13 nationalities, and where detected, record all locations and casualties of V-1 impacts in London and the south east. In doing so, they rely heavily not only on official documents and combat reports, but also on the vital accounts of the pilots themselves and those on the ground, many of which are quoted verbatim.

Book Description
It is becoming increasingly recognized that epilepsy is no longer the sole domain of the medical profession. Particularly, over recent years the contribution made by psychologists to the understanding and treatment of this disorder has developed enormously. Experts in the field provide a review of the latest research findings, addressing those psychological aspects of epilepsy that are important for both assessment and management.
