5+++ stars!!!! If you are looking to build your faith and grow daily with powerful biblical truths this is the daily reader you MUST HAVE!!!

I found this book at Wal-Mart because I wanted to get something spiritual my husband would have time to read. I started reading it in the store and could not put it down! Immediately he had to read it everyday. The words are so powerfully life-changing that I began borrowing his copy almost daily. He finally bought me one of my own and it enriches both of our lives daily. We bought this book for our friends and they feel the same.

Book Description

Sooner or later, each of us must face the day we develop a disturbing new interest in lawn care; the day we order sauvignon blanc instead of Rolling Rock; the day we refuse to see any concert where we cannot sit down. Sooner or later, each of us must face the day we turn uncool.

Dan Zevin, who “was never exactly Fonz-like to begin with,” is having a hilariously hard time moving from his twenties to his thirties, and he confesses everything in these comic not-coming-of-age tales. As he shamefully employs his first cleaning lady, becomes abnormally attached to his dog, and commits flagrant acts of home improvement, Dan’s headed for an early midlife crisis—and a better-late-than-never revelation: Growing up is really nothing to be reluctant about. In fact, it’s very cool.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oh no! Zevin is describing my life!.......2005-09-16

I'm a bit younger than Zevin and he's already describing my life, so I got a glimpse at what is coming up. This book is a quick read--a series of short entries on topics from lawn care to home improvement to the breaking of those decades-old appliances from your college days to teaching students at a local college. Zevin is a master humorist who delivers his message quickly and with a punch.

The absolute highlight of the collection is Zevin's essay which alternates passages from his journal during his junior year abroad with his experiences fifteen years later visiting his younger brother in Spain. Junior year was THE MOST INTENSE experience, closing down bars, being "stoked," sleeping in train stations, and finding truth and beauty in music and literature. That travel journal is juxtaposed brilliantly against Zevin's demand for creature comfort and different pace at age 35. "Confession: The world is no longer my oyster."

Zevin could be called a male Sandra Tsing Loh, but he gets to his point a lot faster and isn't whiny. This is a fun book, a quick, digestible read, and a great gift item for anyone in their late twenties or mid-thirties.

5 out of 5 stars Funnest book ever!.......2005-09-07

It is nice to know that is now cool to be uncool - and I can now laugh about it!

4 out of 5 stars Confession: I Am Too Old For This Book and I Liked It Anyway.......2005-06-11

As someone who is well into middle age and still grappling with the idea of growing up and being an adult, I loved reading Dan Zevin's startling confessions ("I went to a wine tasing", "I am a figure of authority", etc.). I still feel like an imposter when I do something grown up like spackling or buying insurance.

Some of Zevin's confessions have been done to death ("I take pride in my lawn", "I engage in home improvement projects"), but he's easy to take and makes even these stale subjects fun to read about.

Where he really gets funny though, is when he is ticked off. One of the funniest essays is about his participation, as a freelance journalist, in an etiquette class for eight- to twelve-year-olds. The teacher is prim and snooty and Zevin is outraged at the idea of a class where the kids are taught to suck up to the teacher and to be as uptight as she is. So he befriends the class slacker.

Another chapter that stands out is when Zevin and his wife visit Zevin's younger (by fifteen years) brother in Spain. His brother is spending a semester abroad, just like Zevin did so many years ago. He compares the diaries he kept as a twenty-year-old single dude in Denmark with his "adventures" as a thirty-five-year-old married guy who thinks he might be catching a cold.

Anyone who is funny is compared to Dave Barry, and Zevin is reminiscent of Barry sometimes, but I hope that he doesn't go stale like Barry and start to pull out the booger jokes whenever he's hard up for a laugh. No matter how much you are reluctant to grow up, there are some things that just aren't as funny coming out of a fifty-year-old.

2 out of 5 stars Not that funny.......2005-06-04

I was hoping to find my next David Sedaris, but alas I did not. Reading these stories, the only thing that kept coming to mind was "this guy is trying way too hard to be funny." I myself am a late twenty something, struggling with many of the same things Zevin MENTIONS - but there is never a climax, never a conclusion, just rambling and unfunny rambling at that. He often speaks of not being able to fix anything around the house, in fact there is an entire chapter on that, however it has NOTHING to do with growing up, no realizations, and NO FUNNIES! I finished the book but simply felt annoyed for doing so.

1 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment.......2004-09-28

I had high hopes for this book. However the title is about the smartest thing about this piece. Perhaps I'm not the part of the target audience for this book. Unfortunately I felt Zevin was pushing too hard to be funny and it just didn't work out. I'm sure he's a funny guy in real life, but as far as I'm concerned, his writing needs a lot of work.

This massive thriller pits a scheming prince of the Church who believes he was once Alexander the Great against the Addison brothers--Harry, a Hollywood lawyer, and Danny, a Vatican priest. It seems that Danny had the bad luck to hear another cardinal's confession outlining a heinous plot to poison China's water supply in order to win the Vatican bankers a multi-billion-dollar contract to rebuild it--and of course to take advantage of the opportunity to convert a quarter of the world's population and ensure the Church's world domination into the next century. Spanning the globe from Vatican City to Beijing, from Los Angeles to Switzerland, the action never stops. And whenever it seems to falter for more than a paragraph, someone among Folsom's picaresque cast of minor characters (a nun, a dwarf, a CIA station chief, a beautiful television journalist, and an African poet, among others) turns up just in time to give it a nudge. The narrative is not as fluid as it could be, and the plot might have been devised by a conspiracy theorist with a taste for chaos physics, but fans of Folsom's intense novel The Day After Tomorrow won't be disappointed. --Jane Adams

4 out of 5 stars Page Turning.......2007-05-14

This is my favorite Folsom novel to date. It is much better paced than The Exile or Day After Tomorrow. The main character is better developed and you get the sense that he truly is confused, which is important. It makes him more believable. Some of the other reviews have mentioned that the plot is improbable, which it is probably is. But like The DaVinci Code, it is just a story. I don't think Folsom is claiming his novel is true. It is a good page turner. My husband bought this for me to read on vacation and made the mistake of giving it to me a few days before we left. I had finished it before boarding the plane.....it's good.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal page-turning thriller - best I've ever read!!!!.......2007-02-22

I was drawn into this book within the first 10 pages. I started reading it on vacation abroad, and couldn't wait to find some down time so I could catch up on where I left off in the book. It is the best book I've EVER read. I HIGHLY recommended this book and have recommended it to many others who have also agreed that this book was a true page turner and suspense-filled thriller. This book is far better than Folsom's other book "The Day After Tomorrow."

3 out of 5 stars Slower than a Dan Brown story, but still entertaining.......2006-02-22

While this book was written before Dan Brown's "Angels & Demons" or "The DaVinci Code," this book nontheless seems to beg for comparison those better known novels. There certainly are similarities--a conspiracy at the highest levels of the Catholic Church and an outsider trying to stay alive long enough to figure out what's going on and stop it. The biggest difference is in the pacing. Dan Brown's stories proceed at a blistering pace, while this one develops more gradually. The level of suspense here is a bit lower as well, though both the pacing and the suspense were sufficient to keep my interested. The final confrontation is complex and satisfying, though it is a bit messy, much like real life. The biggest flaws in this book, in my opinion, are that I found the motivations and goals of the primary antagonists difficult to believe, and I also found it hard to believe that some of the other cardinals wouldn't have the fortitude to risk everything for what they must know to be right. Over all, though, this was an entertaining thriller, provided one is willing to accept the basic premise at face value.

2 out of 5 stars someone outlaw 'Vatican Thrillers' !.......2005-10-20

had to read this for a book group ( along with Arthur and George - what a contrast !) Knew in the first 10 pages I would hate it. Angels and Demons was quite good and I admire Dan Brown and the whole Da Vinci code phenomena but enoughs enough ! In Folsoms defense this was published 2 years before 'angels' and 4 years before 'da vinci',but its just the same stuff over and over. I was raised a catholic and its all very interesting and intriguing at first but becomes EXTREMELY boring very quickly. I'm also too cyncial for these books - I can never be convinced of the conspiracy theories and spend the whole time saying 'as if'.Never again.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Dan Brown Books -- buy this one!.......2005-06-16

Rome, Popes, murder , terrorist and great mystery. If you enjoyed Angels and Demons you will love this book. I re-read this book just recently and thought wonderful yet again. I would recommend this book and The Day after Tomorrow.

Book Description

In 1857 a wagon train of Arkansas emigrants traveling through Utah on their way to California was attacked by a group of Mormons led by John D. Lee. The murder of 120 men, women, and children is notorious to this day. Although 58 Mormon men participated in the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Lee was the only man tried for the crime. The involvement of Brigham Young is still debated almost 150 years later. Lee's autobiography, written when he was in prison awaiting execution by the United States government, was first published in 1877. This facsimile edition is the first reprint of the entire book since 1891. It provides not only the story of the massacre but an insider's account of the formative years of Mormonism. Active in the establishment of the church first in Missouri and later in Nauvoo, Illinois, Lee advanced in the church hierarchy to become one of the bodyguards of the prophet Joseph Smith and an “enforcer” for the secret terrorist organizations known as the Danites, Death Angels, and Blood Atoners. Mormonism Unveiled provides the best description of Brigham Young's elevation to the presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints after the assassination of Joseph Smith. It also reveals the origin of polygyny by revelation in the church and how the “sealing” of marriages facilitated this process. Lee describes in detail the beatings, robberies, castrations, assassinations, and Mormon wars with Gentiles in the Midwest that culminated in the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

This reissue includes the original publisher's preface and a preface and introduction by Lee's attorney, W. W. Bishop, as well as an account of Lee's arrest and execution, transcripts of his trial, names of the assassins and accessories, an appendix on the life of Brigham Young, and a personal account by a victim of Mormon polygyny.

This facsimile edition provides not only the story of the infamous 1857 massacre of the Arkansas immigrant wagon train, but an insider's account of the formative years of Mormonism.

2 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2006-07-27

While browsing the "reviews" of this book it was hard to ignore this one:

"I am a very devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints(mormons). I know that the formation of Utah was aided by god for my ancestors to settle there and this book is an exageration and a byest opinion".

First of all, anyone who claims to be a Latter-Day Saint wouldn't just blurt something like this in a book review forum. Secondly, I happen to know that "Mormons" know how to spell "biased".

Okay...okay...enough of the entertainment portion of my review. The two major aspects of this memoir/book by JD Lee are the following:

1 - JD Lee never said anything against the doctrine, gospel, or teachings of the Latter-Day Saints. He never even recanted his belief in the (then) prophet of the church, Brigham Young. With all of this loyalty towards his church and his leaders it is hard to take into account some of the things that were written in the book. We do know that it wasn't supervised by JD Lee during the publication of the book so there isn't any corroboration on the statements made in the book. His lawyer was pretty high-strung on the idea of hurting Mormons (like so many other people at that time), which makes it hard to swallow that he was the man responsible for publishing it.

2 - We still really don't know what happened that day in Mountain Meadows, Utah! Every instance of recounted "history" is still blurred with too much conjecture to make any sort of a conclusion. The Mormons were viciously attacked, murdered, and kicked out of every place they had been up until the early 1900's (even by the federal government), which makes a plausible scenerio of Mormon settlers quick to react to a situation. We also know that the Lee group from Arkansas were Baptist Christians and it's no secret that Baptists have taken a very stern stance against Mormons and have (to this day) expended much energy and money to the defamation of the Latter-Day Saints.

I've read the book and watched the documentaries, yet my mind is still as clear as mud on this issue. There are way too many contradictions of myth and (purported) events to make any kind of a conclusion.

It is a shame that an event like this actually happened and it pains my heart to know that families were torn apart that day in the desert. The Mormon people were treated like fourth-class citizens during that age in American history many of whom were brutally murdered (see: Hauns Mill Massacre; Joseph Smith; Extermination Act of Missouri by Governor Boggs; etc...), but it doesn't give anyone the right for revenge on a party of people not connected to any of the other grievances suffered by the LDS people. You can judge a tree by the fruit that it yields and to this day I can't find too much rotten fruit produced by the Mormon religion. If this event of the Mountain Meadows Massacre was indeed a barbaric act conducted by a band of southern Utah men then there is no excuse for them and I'm certain they will (or have already) receive their punishment by He whom they believe in, but at this juncture and with the information we have I, personally, cannot make a judgement on the matter.

I think the Mormon people have come a long way, however. They are now a very well respected group of people who, for the most part, live good and honorable lives with high standards and morals. It's hard to hate a people that try to live a better and more moral way of life. There are a handful of Mormons I know that haven't lived up to "Mormon standards", but on the whole they are still good guys with good hearts, just like any other god-fearing Christian.

I can't say that I recommend the book or don't recommend the book because there wasn't a reason to hate it and there isn't a reason to love it. It's not a clean, clear, crisp book by the way it was written, but I'm just one man.

5 out of 5 stars The Evil of mormonism Revealed.......2006-07-25

I first came across references to this book while reading Fawn Brodie's masterpiece, "No Man Knows My History," her brilliant biography of Joseph Smith, the lunatic charlatan who invented mormonism. I was quite surprised to find this book, Mormonism Unveiled, while browsing for something else to read. The fact that this book was written so long ago (1877) and was a first-hand account of the infamous Mountain Meadows Massacre by the only mormon convicted of participating in that heinous act of unadulterated human slaughter, only made the book that much more intriguing.

The author, John D. Lee was, like all mormons, a religious fanatic who ascribed godly characteristics to lecherous and vile human beings such as Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. He spent most of his life serving the evil cult of mormonism. This shocking autobiography, written as he was sitting in jail awaiting his execution as the mormon's scapegoat for the 40 or 50 other cult members who slaughtered more than 120 innocent souls, is filled with tales of the lawlessness of his evil religion. John D. Lee spares no expense in sharing his personal history in which he was an active polygamist (he had nineteen wives); exposes the death squad of the mormon Danites who would murder anyone upon the command of Smith, Young, and others; would castrate young men who refused to give up their girlfriends because some old geezer polygamist wanted to add these young ladies as yet another wife in their collection; and many, many other atrocities. Perhaps no other book documents what a filthy subhuman cretin Brigham Young really was.

While this book had been out of print for an extremely long time (perhaps 100 or more years), it has fortunately been republished so that the world can know that truth about the evil foundation that mormonism is built upon. John D. Lee was executed for his crimes - it's only a shame that all of the other cult members who took part in the slaughter did not meet a similar fate. Fortunately, one must assume that they are all now serving time where they belong - in Hell.

3 out of 5 stars Lee's words twisted..........2003-09-24

It is important to remember when reading this version of John D. Lee's writings that his words were manipulated by the editor to convey an anti-Mormon message. Lee NEVER turned his back on his religion, nor did he ever point the finger at Brigham Young for the massacre (whether Young ordered it or not.) He was angry with Young when he died - he felt betrayed and rightly so and he did speak and write angry words regarding Young. But Lee actually REFUSED an opportunity to go free if he would agree to implicate Young and speak out against the church. He refused and was executed. He was a faithful Mormon to the end. This book is availible in it's more pure form under the title "The Writings of John D. Lee." - His diaries were also recently republished under the title "A Mormon Chronicle" - read these books for a more complete picture. --------- I am a Lee descendant.

5 out of 5 stars An American Tragedy.......2003-09-17

The Mountain Meadows massacre is one of those events in history that is too large for partisanship. John Lee and what happened to him is no more, no less a matter worth understanding than Mountain Meadows. Here is a book that comes as nearly as any is likely to ever approach to help students of history and the human condition grasp how abysmal that condition can become. John Lee was a good man who found himself killing men, women and children in cold blood. Anything to help humans understand how he came to do this is worth the read. Certain similar massacres of Vietnamese civilians by US troops, the Cambodian killing fields, the Nazi concentration camps and Spanish Inquisition are a single facet of humanity painful to examine. But we all need to examine them. This book is a good place to begin.

    Book Description

1905. With numerous illustrations. Lewis writes in the Introduction: Almost a half century ago, being in 1857, John Doyle Lee, a chief among that red brotherhood, the Danites, was ordered by Brigham Young and the leading counselors of the Mormon Church to take his men and murder a party of emigrants then on their way through Utah to California. The Mormon orders were to kill all who can talk, and, in their carrying out, Lee and his Danites, with certain Indians whom he had recruited in the name of scalps and pillage, slaughtered over one hundred and twenty men, women and children and left their stripped bodies to the elements and the wolves. This wholesale murder was given the title of The Mountain Meadow Massacre. Twenty years later, in 1877, the belated justice of this Government seated Lee on his coffin, and shot him to death for his crimes. In addition to writing about his life, Lee also gives among other matters the story of the Church of Mormon from its inception, when Joseph Smith pretended, with the aid of Urim and Thummim, to translate the golden plates. Lewis then goes on to allege that in the name of Mormon safety, Brigham Young, by money and other agencies worked to have the book suppressed.

I feel like I have visited Tuscany during my reading of this book. This second of his books is a wonderful appreciation of one's own world. Dario has the ability to see and hear the beauty and history and translate that to words. We should all open our eyes and ears a little more and take a moment to really feel our lives. I hope that I can. If you don't have time for a vacation this year, just read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Confessions as a devotional aid...beautiful!.......2007-04-23

Reverend P.J. Southam, an admitted "plain country preacher," has done a wonderful job in preparing this daily devotional which has a focus not only on Scripture but also on the Reformed Confessions espoused by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and other Reformed denominations.

Reverend Southam, who has previously compiled "A Scriptural Index to the Book of Confessions," has done an outstanding job in allowing the reader of this devotional to digest small nuggets of the "Book of Confessions" along side relevant supporting Scripture. If you are a lay person who has heard of the "Book of Confessions" but is totally unfamiliar with it, this is a wonderful book to introduce them to you. The daily devotions are designed to follow the Church calender and so are very relevant topically as the year moves along.

If you are a pastor flustered that your church elders and deacons can quote the "Book of Order" to you from memory, but has no idea what the "Book of Confessions" speak to, consider providing this book for your lay leaders. It could very well become an invaluable resource.

Each days reading takes approximately five to ten minutes to complete. Every day you will find a part of a confession; a piece of Scripture ; a paragraph showing the relevance of the two; and a prayer written by the author.

Many "enlightened" people make the mistake of believing that the ancient, historic Church has nothing to offer us today. By reading the confessions devotionally, a person will find that statement is completely out of line. There is much we can learn as 21st century Christians by reading the works of those who came before us. This book is a wonderful way for a person to introduce themselves to the wisdom and beauty of the past.

      Book Description

1904. This is the autobiographical account of Bill Hickman, Chief of the Destroying Angels, Head Danite, etc. After Mr. Beadle began to examine the history of the Mormon church; and while all the Mormon people spoke of Bill Hickman as a desperately bad man, and guilty of untold murders, he was struck by two curious and then unexplainable facts. The first was that while everybody, from Brigham Young down, united in calling Hickman a murderer, and while evidence could easily be collected of several of his crimes, not a single attempt has been made by priest or people to bring him to justice. The second point is that long after Hickman was known as a murderer, he was successively promoted to a number of offices; he was Sheriff and Representative of one county, Assessor and Collector of Taxes, and Marshal; and during all this time he was on terms of personal intimacy with Brigham Young.

5 out of 5 stars Britham's Destroying Angel: Being the Life, Confession and Startling Disclosure of the Notorious Bill Hickman, Danite Chief of U.......2007-01-12

Basically simply the story of Bill Hickman in his own words. There is a preface from his lawyer J.H. Beadle which is quite insightful. The issue is, was Mr. Hickman truthful in his account. I would recommend reading a companion book like Hiltons "Wild Bill" Hickman and the Mormon Frontier. It is good to get someone elses views based on their research. I am really glad to have been able to get a copy of this mans most important history in print. It is really a good read. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Living the real wild west.......2003-09-19

I really enjoyed reading this book though I did read it with a little grain of salt added. Seeing how Hickman wrote it himself I'm sure the truth and fact was sprinkled with a little sugar.

I was glad Beale didn't do much editing and left the manuscript mostly as Hickman wrote it. I could almost hear the screaming indians, hear the cries of wounded men, hear the horses being lead out of the coral...by thives. I could see the murdered men fall from the saddle, watch the hangings and sit in court watching justice....sort of being served.

If you enjoy non fiction western then this is the book to read, providing you can read a little between the lines.

There's no doubt living in those days of the untamed west was trying and difficult, all of the settlers and emigrants had to be a very tough and hardy bunch.
