Book Description
What you see is not always what you get - and this true story of a man and his dog is no exception. Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheepdog - not terribly unlike how God's love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom. Allow yourself to see Biblical truth in this classic tale of what can happen when you yield to the Master.

Lessons from a Sheep Dog.......2007-04-28
The write ups were misleading. I bought this book for my grandson, only to find it contained Christian propaganda. "Obey the Master's voice" ??? please...
Engaging, light read - recommend for all.......2006-10-09
This book is warm story that shows the relationship of trust and loyalty built between an abused dog and his new owner. I highly recommend it to any and all.
Worthy of a re-read from time to time. Among other messages, a gentle reminder of the spirit of service we are all meant to demonstrate!
Great book for dog lovers.......2006-07-09
I gave this book to a friend for her birthday. She has a dog just like Lass and could relate very closely to the author's experiences. She loved the book. I am reading it now and agree completely. Great book for any dog lover.
Lessons from a Sheep Dog.......2006-03-20
Be sure to get this little book to go with "A shepherd looks at psalm 23". It will open you eyes to your relationship with our good shepherd and it may put you to shame as to how willing are you to follow His call.
Lovely Dogs.......2006-01-24
Did you know that not all things have to be taught by people? In Lessons from a Sheep Dog By Phillip Keller you will learn things from sheep dogs you thought could only be taught by people.
Lass, a non well trained sheep dog, teaches the farmer about discipline, trust, and love. Although Lass wasn't trained the farmer learned that he needs to show Lass who is in charge. Also he learns that if he doesn't trust Lass then Lass will just be stuck as a puppy forever. Then love because Lass was more then a sheep dog she was the farmers best friend. This story was told in the narrator point of view. The author kind of wrote in a creative way because he didn't straight up tell that Lass was teaching the farmer about life but you could still tell that that is what the author was trying to get through our brains. This story takes place on a farm. One connection I made was "I like this character because he knows how to show Lass who is boss."
This book was pretty good and I would recommend this novel to people who like dog books. This book was also exciting and loving.

Book Description
A poignant story of one woman's determination to start a life anew in idyllic Nova Scotia, far away from her jetsetting-New Yorker roots.
A working actress and divorced mother of two young boys takes off for the summer to the coast of Nova Scotia. She falls in love with the place; buys a house; ultimately buys an island because it is the view from her house and because she wants to save it from development. With the help of none other than the real-life assistant to the legendary vet James Herriot, she finds herself the owner of a flock of quasi-wild sheep on Blue Island, Nova Scotia. So begins Anne Barclay Priest's wonderful tale of her life between New York and Nova Scotia that extends over the next several decades. Her hilarious and heart-warming stories populated with evocative local characters and unforgettable animal friends recount the trials and tribulations of this urban actress/rural farmer life. It's the story of a woman who has dared to live the kind of independent and self-directed life that the rest of us only dream about.
Customer Reviews:
A character for sure.......2007-01-10
This is, indeed a story about a woman and her sheep, and it is certainly not a "tell-all" about Anne Barclay Priest, but after I read it I found myself wondering about her none the less. The sheep are great, but the woman is fascinating, as much for what she doesn't tell you as for what she does. This book gets well received in knitting circles, and it is worth the read for the stories about sheep, but it is really a memoir about a woman from another era who held her course and did well what she had to do and wanted to do. Overall it is a very good read and a book to make you think about how people's lives are changed by little things along the way.
Very good book.......2006-10-16
This book isn't exactly what you would expect. It's wonderful and full of great info and such an interesting story. However, the author doesn't get intimate in details truley. She does say things like "I was very close to so-and-so and it hurt me deeply when they passed" but never gets into the WHY's of some things that I wish she did. It is not "intimate" at all, but I loved it all the same. I always wondered what it was like to raise sheep and this gives you lots of good info about a day in the life. It is very much worth the read and to add to your library if your into sheep and weaving or spinning. It is not something anyone would ever make a movie intok, there is no climax, but it is a wonderful account of some of her life expereinces raising sheep.
Recommended for its creative and entertaining narrative of intriguing stories which are both funny and intimate.......2006-06-03
Trafficking In Sheep: A Memoir -- From Off-Broadway, New York, To Blue Island, Nova Scotia by Anne Barclay Priest is the engaging tale of a working class actress and divorced mother of two young boys as she vacations to a coastal region off of the coast of Nova Scotia. Readers will become enthralled in Trafficking In Sheep as it follows Pries through her increasing passion for Blue Island, leading to her purchase of a serene and beautiful house and the eventual buying of an island in view of her house in vain attempt to preserve her view. A highly recommended memoir that would grace any community library's Biography collection, Trafficking In Sheep is recommended for its creative and entertaining narrative of intriguing stories which are both funny and intimate.
Ignore Publisher's Weekly.......2006-05-16
The PW review that accompanies the listing for this book is off base in my opinion. This book is an interesting memoir of one woman's almost accidental involvement that becomes a life time experience of raising sheep. Since she only lives in Nova Scotia for the summer, some of the book touches on her life in NY State where she eventually sets up a sheep farm in NY. Anne Priest is incredibly talented and self sufficient. PW seemed to expect a book about life in Nova Scotia which this book is not. It is a book about Anne Priest's experience and worth reading, although it does wander just a tad.

Book Description
Unlike most other large mammals, the Soay sheep population of Hirta in the St. Kilda archipelago show persistent oscillations, sometimes increasing or declining by more than 60% in a year. This study explores the causes of these oscillations and their consequences for selection on genetic and phenotypic variation within the population, drawing on studies over the past twenty years of the life-histories and reproductive careers of many sheep. It will be essential reading for vertebrate ecologists, demographers, evolutionary biologists and behavioral ecologists.

Lessons From a Sheepdog.......2004-07-05
"Now that you are starting a new life, I am going to give you a new name. How does Lass sound to you?" asked Phillip Keller, the new owner that Lass was introduced to through a personal ad. Although there was a need on both the sheepdog and new owners behalf, Lass escaped from Phillip as soon as the leash was removed. The pages of this book are enhanced by eloquent illustrations. The adventures and mishaps that Lass and Phillip have with one another and other animals are entertaining and suspensful. This is a book for every dog lover.
Outstanding.......2001-03-23
This is an outstanding book not only for children but for adults also. I have 4 children from ages 9-15 and they all greatly enjoyed and loved this book! Highly recommended!

Absolutely great---I am ready to move!.......1998-07-09
I have read both "Good-bye Boise, Hello Alaska and also "Dear Cora". Having made trips to Alaska and after each trip gaining the desire to move, these books only reforced my desire. It certainly took allot of courage for Cora to move not only herself, but also her sons. I am sure it was probably the best move, for all concerned, that she has and will ever make. I truly enjoyed every word.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, Bad Scanning errors.......2007-02-10
The three stars in my review are for *this edition* of the book. The book itself is great. If you love the Sherlock Holmes stories or books by Rider Haggard, you will love this book. Buchan tells a good tale, keeps the pace moving, and has a real love of place. His characters are not deep, but several of them are very likable, and you will care what happens to them. If you've been bored re-reading the same old books and you like adventure, by all means, get this book.
But not this edition. This Elibron books edition is *so badly done* that the authors should be tarred and feathered. It has been scanned in and then simply published as such. Totally cheap, with no human checking for scanning errors. They are egregious and distracting. The worst of all is the repeated phrase "the bland of Sheep" for "the Island of Sheep"--that being the title of the book! But there are many others, and sometimes they are so bad that you can't figure out what the original word was supposed to be. This makes it hard to sink into the story and lose yourself, as you're constantly being brought up short to ask yourself, "Is that a real word, or is it a scan-o?" The problem is made worse by two things: First, Buchan really does use an unusual vocabulary, including terms from hound tracking, Nordic words, terms from falconry and duck-hunting, and the like. So there are genuine additions to your vocabulary waiting here, and that makes it harder to pick out the scan-o's. Second, the scanning software they used apparently was linked to a dictionary and always fills in a real word instead of nonsense, where often if it just filled in nonsense, the original word would be easier to de-code. Example--it used "all" for "till" in one case. That took me a while of puzzling, and something like "tlll" would have been easier to figure out. "The" comes out as "me" several times. One of the funniest is "domes" for "clothes," which is repeated every time the word "clothes" should appear.
Buy this book, but buy it used and in some other edition. The editors at Elibron should be scolded and shouldn't sell another book until they can do some actual work to publish their books instead of scanning and selling without editing.
