Book Description
For Anne Olsen, new and improved is the only way to live. So how'd she fall for a secondhand man? Charlotte had the Malibu Barbie with a full wardrobe. Emily inherited a slightly used Barbie with two outfits and Anne was left with a one-armed, bald Barbie who enjoyed nudist colonies. It's little wonder that at twenty-nine, Anne drives a new car, eats only from freshly opened packages and thinks antique is a euphemism for moldy.
After growing up in the shadows of her older sisters -- one a swimsuit model, the other a pop-feminist -- Anne's personality is one part sibling rivalry and two parts VD (stands for Vague Dissatisfaction, and yes, it itches). Now she's the self-professed underachiever in the family, determined to find happiness on her own terms. But when her sister's ex-boyfriend -- seemingly perfect, potentially interested -- reenters her life, Anne's got to ask: Could she possibly fall in love with a hand-me-down man?
Customer Reviews:
Light, funny reading.......2006-07-23
Enjoyed this book for light, funny reading. Have handed it down to daughters who enjoyed it also.
Hand Me Down.......2006-05-07
I really enjoyed this book-the main character was great!!! I rooted for her grandiose plans.
A must read for younger sisters.......2006-01-28
As a younger sister of an overacheiver there were many parts of this book I could really relate to. It was funny quirky and delightfully silly. A keeper.
About sibbling rivalries, finding love.......2005-10-06
Lee Nichols's "Hand-Me-Down" centered around Anne, a twenty-nine year old who had been jumping from one job to another, one boyfriend to another, who always had a commitment problem. She was unable to stay focused or committed to one thing for long and had always been fascinated with the idea of "new" things. This was due to the fact that she had been using "hand-me-down" things from her two older sisters, beautiful Charlotte and brainy Emily. Anne constantly compared herself to her sisters, feeling inferior as she was not known for anything and had not achieved anything. In addition, she became attracted to Charlotte's ex-boyfriend Ian whom she believed still had a crush on her married sister.
This was an okay book for me as even though the book was fast-paced and at times fun, the main character Anne was a bit too whiny for me. Throughout the whole book, she was forever whining about how she was not good enough, how people overlooked her, etc etc. That being said, the book does has its funny moments which somewhat redeems itself. It's a light, and relaxing read. Not the best in this genre but just don't have high expectations.
Sometimes Hand-Me-Downs Fit Perfectly!.......2005-08-30
OK, so it might not be great literature, but Hand-Me-Down by Lee Nichols is so much fun, you won't mind that it's not. Please don't rush to judge the book by its main character's first misadventure, a silly scene involving mannequins, because what happens if you stick with the book is you'll fall a little bit in love with protagonist Anne Olsen yourself, as exasperating as she is, and you will come to appreciate Nichols' humor as well as her insight into what it can be like to be the youngest and most underachieving of three sisters-- this is my station in life, so I know!

Who Can Stand Against
the Son of the Dragon?
The Wyrmsmoke Mountains shook with the thunder of ten thousand screaming hobgoblin soldiers. From the phalanx emerged a single champion. One by one the tribes fell silent as the warlord rose up, red scales gleaming along his shoulders, horns swept back from his head. A hundred bright yellow banners stood beneath him, each marked with a great red hand. He stood upon a precipice and raised his arms. “I am Azarr Kul, Son of the Dragon!” the warlord bellowed. “Hear me! Tomorrow we march to war!”
Red Hand of Doom is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure designed for characters of levels 6—12. Confronted with the relentless advance of Azurr Kul’s horde, the characters must undertake vital missions to influence the outcome of the war. Can they shatter the armies of the enemy, or will Azarr Kul’s dreams rain destruction upon the human lands?

Red Hand of Doom.......2007-02-10
I haven't yet had a chance to run the adventure, though I look forward to doing so. I love the usage of Victory Points, and the rules are clear enough as put forward in the adventure to not require Heroes of Battle. I found the plot comprehensive and believable, the presentationw as excellent. All in all, I very much like the adventure, and I can't wait to run some PCs through it.
Very well done, but my players had some problems with it.......2006-12-15
I, as a DM, thought this adventure was amazing. Epic, well-done and well-put together, with a really interesting storyline and a good variety of monsters and battles. The climax and conclusion were amazing---they have such good mechanics for doing a battle for an entire town, and the concluding dungeon crawl was appropriately awesome for the high-level characters that have come out of this module by that time.
However, my players had a few issues that they brought up with me. First, they thought the free-form nature was too much. Let me explain... they felt that there definitely was a "right way to go," but that they were left on their own to find it, so they had to rely on NPC hooks and (in one player's words) "being led around by the nose by the DM." I strongly suggest giving the players a patron who directs their actions, making them more of a special task force than a bunch of adventurers who happen to wander into the middle of an invasion and just so happen to run off in the direction necessary to stop the invasion four or five times in a row.
And on that last note, you really have to integrate this adventure into your campaign, otherwise the players will not care about the vale that they're saving at all. One of them suggested just leaving and letting the goblins take over the vale; now, this isn't practical because then there would be a nation of bloodthirsty hobgoblins with demonic support ready to march on the _world_, but that is not clear at all from the first 2/3 of the adventure. Especially since the players really didn't care if this town fell or not, it was a bit of a problem.
A final problem is that goblins and all their associated monstrous foes just aren't very exciting enemies. You kill goblins at first level, so a goblin army---while certainly a problem---doesn't _feel_ like it should be a big deal for even 5th-level characters. Now replace them with aberrations with mind flayer leaders, or some kind of psionic threat, or perhaps an army of awakened constructs, or... then it might be cool. But the PCs really didn't get much out of taking on an army composed mainly of CR 1/3 baddies, and that seems quite understandable.
All this can be fixed with some work on the DMs part, and I do suggest doing that since the whole adventure is a really well-done framework. I am considering using this in an Eberron campaign I'm running now (a new group), with the following changes:
* The goblin threat is replaced by the Lord of Blades, who has achieved the ability to create a warforged army that is seeking to destroy all of human civilization and replace it with a warforged-supremacist state.
* The PCs are special agents of House Cannith, which understandably feels responsible.
* Dragons (who are the rare, high-level baddies of the horde to supplement the goblins) get replaced by abberations being summoned from Xoriat, or perhaps demons/high-level undead/a psionic threat like the quori.
* The war becomes part of an even larger context in which the Mark of Death is returning, with the Blood of Vol having forged an uneasy alliance of convenience with the Lord of Blades to use the warforged's kills as undead-creation material.
* Many of the characters' favorite locations are destroyed or seriously threatened---I'm thinking of starting the campaign out with a large, well-coordinated warforged terrorist attack on Sharn that leads to the imposition of martial law and concentration camps for warforged.
So with changes like these (adapt for Forgotten Realms or your own campaign setting) I think you can use the RHoD's very good core framework and plot sequence, while fixing the problems that my players had.
Good buy!.......2006-11-10
This is a good buy if you're looking for a long campagin/adventure. I hope they make more of these (rather than seemenly endless source books).
More of the same, but good........2006-11-02
In keeping with recent trends to publish multiple works-per-month, the Red Hand of Doom is a good product with fair-to-high content. The campaign is interesting and involved and of considerably higher quality than many soft back supplements released prior to it (some of the 3.0 handbooks for instance).
That being said, I would have liked an accompanying document that would mirror the content in the book but with the ability to be printed and edited, further allowing for customization and use of content liberally in individual campaigns. I would also have been more pleased with a larger book boasting even more content (similar to some of the newer handbooks Wizards has been releasing since 3.5) for a higher cost than a stand-alone campaign.
Awesome but not perfect.......2006-07-14
I think I'm the first reviewer not to give this adventure 5 stars, which is not to say I don't like it. Having read through it once, it's definitely got a gripping, awesome storyline. I can't wait to get my players up to 5th level so they can get into this adventure. I'm sure they'll enjoy it too.
However, I do have some complaints. As is typical with Wizards of the Coast products, Red Hand of Doom has many typos and inconsistencies. My biggest problem is with the scales on the maps. Distances calculated using the map scales quite often bear no relation to the distances as written in the text. For instance, one place is described as being 80 miles away from the starting point in the text, but on the map looks to be only about 20 miles away. Another place is described as being 'a hard day's march' away from another point, but on the map looks to maybe a half day's stroll away. This is by no means impossible to work around (I'd say go with the text over the maps), but it's nevertheless disappointing and annoying.
Still, this is a great adventure. I highly recommend getting it.
We need more adventures like this, Wizards!

Book Description
The first book to capture both the arms and family history of the old Irish Septs, and the newer 'settler' families from Scotland and England. Documented with Locations, Dates and Sources. The actual Color Coats of Arms and Blazons are included for many of the families, and many others are displayed in black and white exactly as they are found in the old works in the Irish Archives. Seats of power; forfeited arms; Extinct lines; Noble orders; Badges; and Peeresses are included, making this the most complete work of its kind.
Customer Reviews:
Proven original arms and families from the 1700's onwards!.......2002-09-17
This book has salvaged original arms from works as early as the 1700s in Ireland, and ties many of the arms to specific individuals - seldom done in other works. Some originals were from the 1700's, it is no wonder that they are not 'perfectly' glossy. They are very real. Those unfamiliar with the printing process may not understand that ink will fade over the centuries. All the originals have been reproduced exactly as they appeared in the dusty, salvaged volumes in the Irish Archives. Many appear nowhere else in print. Some novices may like arms that have been redrawn by a modern 'artist' in modern colors- this book includes over a hundred of those, but also includes hundreds of orginals that are found in no other work today- which makes it very unique
In addition - genealogy notes which appear nowhere else in print appear in several hundred entries. They name the holder of the arms, the name of father or descendant, and the SOURCE from which the information is taken, i.e. the Peerage of Ireland, The Irish Compendium, etc...dating back to 1722 a.d.. It is, bar none, the largest collection of Irish arms with commentary.
In short, any serious student of Irish heraldry will appreciate this work and its historical context.
Home printing at its worst.......2001-10-18
If you are thinking of buying this book, save your money. Neither the research into this subject nor the quality of the printing is worth it. The book appears to be a cut-and-paste collection of images that appeared in antique books. The quality is so poor that many of the black-and-white images are blurry (low resolution on computer scanner?)and show black lines at the edges like a poor photocopy. Nor is the book comprehensive. All in all this book seems to have been published at home....
Really Good.......2001-08-17
This book taught me alot. Nothing else explains the old Irish and also the families that settled in Ireland from Scotland, England and Wales etc... It includes the Roll of Arms for Irish septs..circa 1690 and also 300 years of Arms issued in Ireland under the British. Lots more to read, genaology notes can run from one sentence to serveral detailed paragraphs. I recommend it!

Book Description
Natalie Lindstrom was once one of an elite group of investigators with the power to interview the dead victims of violent crime. But now Natalie has had enough. Enough of the violence. Enough of the darkness that has already gotten too close to her five-year-old daughter. Yet as she tries to build a new life and protect her child from the world she has left, Natalie still knows injustice when she sees it. And she knows that in a high-profile California trial, a young man is getting away with murder.
The case against Prescott Hyland Jr. is airtight–until a corrupt Violet delivers devastating testimony against another man. Now Natalie is being drawn back into her former career and a danger far worse than she can imagine. For while one killer is being tried in a courtroom, another has gone horribly free: to unleash a storm of vengeance–aimed straight for the heart of Natalie’s new life. Because, in the world of the Violets, sometimes your past can literally come back to haunt you. . . .

With Red Hands.......2006-11-04
I really loved this book. I had a very hard time putting it down.
Natalie Rocks!.......2006-08-18
This is the second installment of Natalie Lindstrom, a violet. Violets have violet eyes and have the ability to communicate with the dead. This is a cool way to catch killers until a corrupt violet finds a way to call up a false witness spirit. Will the real killer go free? Natalie also must face a crisis in her own life. To make matters worse, her daughter is also a violet and "The Corps" wants to recruit and train her to become an investigator, like her mother was. They are just waiting for a chance to nab Callie if Natalie lets her guard down.
Stephen Woodworth has devised an original premise with this series of novels. He has created characters who are believable. The events which take place in his books are not always happy. The hero doesn't always win and the ending isn't fairy tale-ish. I believe this adds to the appeal of his books. Woodworth's books are so easy to read. This is a great book and I highly recommend the whole series, which is up to book 3.
Praise for Stephen Woodworth!.......2006-02-19
Through Violet Eyes hooked me, With Red Hands pulled me back in, and In Golden Blood made me want only more. What makes these stories great is that such a fantastic idea of the Violets is possible! I never stopped myself in these stories to say "HOW can they do this?" in the context that it was impossible. Woodworth manages to duplicate his previous work with such real characters that even the bad guys have back stories and motives, much like real life. I highly recommend these stories to anybody who likes a good fiction story, and I cannot wait until From Black Rooms comes out.
Series continues to be fun........2006-01-18
Stephen Woodworth, With Red Hands (Dell, 2005)
The back cover of this book, and Woodworth's website, both prominently mention that he took first place in the Writers of the Future contest. (Isn't that sort of like a poet admitting he'd won the National Library of Poetry competition?) Well, in any case, worry not; despite the endorsement, you'll not find a hint of Scientology in Woodworth's fast-paced, fun thrillers.
Set in an alternate America where a subgroup of humanity known as "violets" can speak with the dead, With Red Hands (the second novel set in the violet world) continues the story of Natalie Lindstrom. It picks up six years after the end of Through Violet Eyes. Natalie now has a five-year-old daughter and a number of watchers from the Corps, which she left at the end of the first book. They not only want her back, they want to recruit her daughter as well. Natalie's having none of it. But her old friend Inez, an assistant district attorney, shows up with a case which she wants Natalie's help with on the sly; she believes the Corps' violet somehow faked testimony in an earlier trial, and will do so again this time. Despite the danger to herself and her child, Natalie finds herself compelled to help.
Woodworth's books are good, solid, quick reads that will keep you interested. They're not going to win any prestigious literary awards, but for brain candy, they're quite nicely done. The twists and turns of the plot are usually not visible until a few pages before they actually happen, the characters have above-average depth for books of this sort, and it's always wonderful to see an author bring fantasy/sci-fi/magic realism/whatever you'd like to call it out into the mainstream and have it be relatively successful.
If you're a fan of the mystery/thriller and haven't yet tried Woodworth, he's certainly worth a look. *** ½
Can't wait for Spring 2006!.......2005-12-02
I became interested in these stories last year. Since then I have had to read the others he has written. He has a way of writing that allows the reader to actually form a solid picture of the characters in your mind's eye. I am looking forward to Spring 2006 when the next in the series is released.

This volume features Constantine facing perhaps the most difficult task of his life: a dream of universal empathy that proves to be hell on Earth for Glasgow. He must gather up all the happy people he can and get them to Glasgow in order to stop a tsunami of bad vibes from overwhelming the world.
Book Description
A bestselling chronicler of the sea turns to a trio of his own ancestors to see what memory and the selective plundering of history has made of the truth in Northern Ireland.
The name “Lundy” is synonymous with traitor in Ulster. Derek Lundy’s first ancestral subject was the Protestant governor of Derry in 1688, just before it came under siege by the Catholic Irish army of James II. For reasons that remain ambiguous, Robert ordered the gates of the city opened in surrender. Protestant hard-liners staged a coup de ville and drove him away in disgrace, a traitor to the cause. But Robert is more memorable for his peace-seeking moderation than for the treachery the standard history attributes to him. William Steel Dickson’s legacy is a little different: a Presbyterian minister born in the late 18th century, he preached with famous eloquence in favour of using whatever means necessary to resist the tyranny of the English, including joining forces with the Catholics in armed rebellion. Finally, there is “Billy” Lundy, born in 1890, the antithesis of the ecumenical William, and the embodiment of what the Ulster Protestants had become by the beginning of World War I – a tribe united in their hostility to Catholics and to the project of an independent Ireland.
The lives of Robert Lundy, William Steel Dickson and Billy Lundy encapsulate many themes in the Ulster past. In telling their stories, Derek Lundy lays bare the harsh and murderous mythologies of Northern Ireland and gives us a revision of its history that seems particularly relevant in today’s world.
Excerpt from
The Bloody Red Hand:
The other thing I remember is the look the young man gave me, after he had taken the cash, put his pistol away and was standing with his hands in his jacket pockets. It wasn’t the expression of someone who was thinking of shooting me too; I never had that feeling. But the way he looked at me was so familiar – wary and calculating. Many people in Belfast had stared in the same way since I’d arrived for a visit. For a long time, I couldn’t understand what it meant. Eventually, I knew. They were trying to decide “what foot I kicked with” – what religion I was. There were supposed ways to tell, subtle indicators. Was I someone they should fear? Or was I one of them? That was what the armed robber was doing, too. He had just shot a man who knew him by his first name. But he was looking at me, the stranger, and trying to figure out whether I was a Prod or a Taig.

Customer Reviews:
Remember the days when Sonja and Conan fought side by side?.......2007-06-17
The Wildstorm/Dynamite crossover with Claw and Red Sonja is the best crossover published with the fiery red heroine so far. The story and plot are pretty basic and isn't all that complicated but it is the conflict and resolution that both warriors experience that makes this book hard to put down. This is the best Sonja story since Roy Thomas was writing Conan due its realistic elements and grim atmosphere. There aren't any B-movie moments Sonja was prone to during the 80's when Frank Thorne was handling the art for her Marvel run. And you won't definitley won't find Sonja teaming up with Conan anytime in the near future due to conflicting rights issues between the companies. This is the next best thing!
Not as good as the other recent 'Red Sonja' titles.......2007-04-15
If you are looking at this because you like the recent Conan titles published by Dark Horse, or the ongoing Red Sonja title published by Dynamite Entertainment, then unfortunately you are probably going to be somewhat disappointed by this, just like I was. Go for the recent Conan titles published by Dark Horse or the ongoing Red Sonja title published by Dynamite Entertainment instead.
Bloody good fun..........2007-03-08
Cheesecake (and beefcake) swords and sorcery. If you're a fan of the genre and your intellectual needs are modest, then this is a nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Ultra creepy!.......2006-05-26
The mystery genre is not one that I am fond of. I bought this book from the now defunct (sadly) Common Reader catalog because of the name and description. I'm so glad I ordered it because this is one of the very few mysteries I have ever liked. Joel Townsley Rogers was one talented writer! Some of his gooseflesh-raising descriptions have stayed in my mind for years. This book is not only mysterious and suspenseful but downright scary.
Rogers was a much better writer than some of today's authors who think that gore and perversion are the only way to scare readers, and that we can only handle one and a half page chapters or our puny little attention spans will collapse.
They should all have to read this book--so subtle, so creepy. I promise you will never forget the crazed little sawtooth killer--the hair on my arms is standing up as I type--if you buy this book you will not regret it!!!
This book is GOOD........2006-02-23
I forget how I was introduced to this book, but I eventually bought it from Amazon. All I can say about The Red Right Hand is it is one of the best thrillers I have ever read.
I will admit I had picked it up then put it down again because I wasn't in the right mood to read it; but once I picked it back up and finished it, I realized the ending alone was worth reading the somewhat slow beginning.
I won't even talk about the plot. To give any details to this book would be unjust to any person who will have the great pleasure of picking it up one day.
Just know you will be knocked over the head by Rogers' denouement.
Rod Serling Meets Hitchcock.......2006-02-12
A corpse with a missing hand, sightings of a twisted gnome driving a sleek convertible, the lone hitchhiker on a deserted highway comes straight from a nightmare's central casting. "The Red Right Hand", written in 1945, fresh and jolting in the 21st century, must have absolutely rocked the literary world of its day with this strangely creepy tale of young love gone impossibly wrong. Dr. Harry Riddle finds himself implicated in the murder of Innis St. Erme, a young New York businessman who had set off to New England to elope with his bride-to-be when a roadside picnic takes a terrible turn. Author Joel Townsley Rogers spins this bizarre and eerie tale tightly around a non-linear plot, leading the reader down a hallucinogenic trail of murder and mind games that is sure to confuse and delight - like you're kicking back on a lazy Saturday afternoon a pick up an early "Twilight Zone" episode mid-flight. But by the time its over, you're on the edge of your seat, yet still completely unprepared for the final twists and turns that would leave Hitchcock stuttering. Classic stuff - the best - don't miss this one.
Don't Think Twice-- Read It!.......2005-11-16
I read this years ago after one of my favorite authors (Donald E. Westlake) cited it as his favorite mystery novel. I loved it. The book is a constantly-shifting and mysterious narrative that repays a close read. Mystery fans: Find it and read it-- the designation of this book as a "classic" is completely justified!
Best suspense thriller ever...EVER!.......2003-07-18
I found this book by chance at a second hand book sale while on summer holiday about three years ago. The edition was printed in 1975 and by now (after reading over and over) looks rather shabby.
I had never heard of the author before and was merely looking for something to pass the time. It didn't pass much time, because once I started reading I couldn't put it down, and only took me one day to finish.
Joel Townsley Rogers puts you, neé, throws you right in the middle of a first-person account of this murder mystery that unfolds in one day. The story and subsequent mystery slowly unravels as he takes you back in time, revealing the characters and the events leading up to the day in which the story is told.
You start guessing and wondering, painting your own mental images of the characters and surroundings desribed with meticulous attention detail.
There are clues throughout the book, and careful reading is required. Read it again and again, and more clues are revealed.
As far as endings to any book are concerned, they're pretty imprtant, so I won't divulge any details. I will say this though...be prepared!
This is whodunnit to the very end, and even though the ending has never changed in the 7 times that I've read it...I'm reading it again for the 8th time right now.
