For generations, treasure hunters have tried to unlock the deadly puzzle known as the Water Pit: a labyrinth of shafts and tunnels that honeycombs the heart of a small island off the coast of Maine. Reputed to be the hiding place of pirate treasure, the Water Pit possesses an inexplicable ability to kill those who venture into it, from professionals to innocent explorers. But now one man has made a startling discovery: The Water Pit is actually a carefully designed fortress, conceived for pirates by a renowned seventeenth-century architect who hid his plans in code. Unlocking the code will break the curse of the Water Pit. Or will it? The most comprehensive, high-tech expedition ever assembled has come to Maine and to Dr. Malin Hatch, owner of the island. While the treasure hunters have their reasons for mounting this assault--$2 billion in gold--Hatch has his own motives to join them. For Hatch, whose brother died on Ragged Island thirty years before, the only escape from the curse is through the black swirling waters and bloodstained chambers of the Pit. With more computing power than a small university, the recovery team slowly chips away at the mystery. But as the seekers try to conquer the Pit, men begin to die. Hatch is confronted with his childhood memories of the tragedy even as he is drawn into a complex relationship with a beautiful French diver. All the while, the last, secret chamber of the Pit waits to unleash the most lethal mystery of all. . . .A thriller of the highest order, Riptide is an extraordinary novel of obsession, courage, and adventure. With each nerve-racking page we are swept into the mystery and the challenge of Ragged Island and forced to face the haunting question: Is the Water Pit a gateway to limitless treasure--or to hell itself?

5 out of 5 stars No Pendergast, but still a thriller!.......2007-06-28

I'm working my way through Preston and Child's novels with FBI Special Agent Pendergast as a main character, but I stopped along the way to read this standalone work. It's a another thriller, even without Pendergast.

The Water Pit is the fiendishly clever trap set by an 18th century architect to protect a pirate's treasure. Recovering the treasure has eluded - and killed - many over the centuries who thought they could crack the secret. Now, in the closing days of the 20th century, the treasure hunters of the Thalassa Holdings company believe they have the equipment and know-how to recover the treasure. They even have the coded journal of the architect of the Water Pit.

As you'll find out in Riptide, they don't know the half of it. Catastrophe follows catastrophe, leading up to the gut-wrenching climax. A couple of romantic subplots spices up the story, and in the end, it looks like the hero gets the girl. Which girl that is, however, well, you'll have to wait until the ending.

The only part of the plot that wasn't logical to me was that if the coded journal would be cracked "within a few days," why Thalassa didn't wait until they had the translation to begin operation at the Water Pit. But this helped the plot and contributed to the climax, so I see why the authors wrote it that way.

Now I'm on to another Pendergast story!

2 out of 5 stars A team of engineers attempts to recover the ultimate treasure cache.......2007-06-05

Riptide, the fourth thriller by Preston and Child, was composed after the authors had hit the New York Times best-sellers list but before they figured out that standalone thrillers isn't quite their thing, and the book is disappointing when compared with the (mostly) excellent Pendergast novels. Even so, the story offers plenty of excitement, an intriguing if not exactly original plot, and a thrilling climax.

The book has several factors working against it. For starters, the basic storyline is so familiar that it's difficult to connect with at times. The gist: a famous pirate buried his unimaginable treasure in a booby-trapped cave known as the "water pit." No one has been able to recover it, despite centuries of various attempts. Now a team of engineers has hit upon the perfect solution. Unfortunately for them, their technology, computers, determination, and greed are no match for the genius of the long-dead pirates. Can anyone count the number of novels that have been written about a search for buried treasure? Probably not.

A second problem is the plot's infeasibility. The idea that centuries-old engineering could outmatch modern technology is a bit hard to swallow. The many booby traps the treasure hunters encounter are reminiscent of Matt Reilly's 7 Deadly Wonders (though perhaps reminiscent isn't the right word, since this book was written years earlier). But where Reilly's blatantly cinematic thrill-ride intentionally relies solely on action and intrigue to overcome the reader's skepticism, Preston and Child have actually created a decent story to go along with their main plot gimmick. Perhaps the problem is that the background turns out to be more interesting that the main plot.

A third problem is characterization. Interestingly, Riptide is one of two books written by Preston and Child that doesn't contain any characters who show up later in other books. Previous standalones Thunderhead and The Ice Limit both had characters strong enough to make appearances in later books. Riptide does not. The hero is likeable enough, but his inability to move on after a childhood tragedy makes him too needy to identify with. And the tragic villain starts out well but by the end becomes so meaninglessly evil that he drifts into cartoonishness. The book's other villain is the pastor of a local church whose spiritual insanity displays the authors' apparent antipathy toward Christianity.

The book contains some objectionable content, including a few sex scenes and some language, but nothing that seems overly inappropriate for this genre. The sexual descriptions here are tame compared with other books by these authors.

For me the bottom line was that after finishing the 415-page book, I wasn't left with any compelling reason for having read it at all. The best novels leave the reader with an enduring message of some kind or a character to hope to see again or at least a sense of having been thoroughly entertained. Riptide leaves the reader feeling like the time invested in reading the book would have been better spent elsewhere. For two authors with such an excellent track record, this book is a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars when are they making a movie of this?.......2007-05-24

I've read some of their other books and walked away indifferent, but I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a page turner that I have given to many friends as a gift and not one of them could put it down. Like Jurassic Park, this book is a tale of how modern technology can fail when pitted against the unknown, and how, man's greed can turn deadly.

The book starts off with a bang and smartly allows the ghost of that event to haunt the main character for a long time. The result of the first scene is revealed later in the book with devestating effect.

My only issue with the book is the ending seems a little hokey, but since I am along for the ride, I accept it and loved it. I've read it twice and would suggest it to anyone who has an interest in pirates, treasure, the actual "money pit" and adventure. You will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Lincoln & Child always deliver a great villian.......2007-05-18

Preston and Child create another spectacular villian in RipTide. The water pit defies every attempt to snatch its treasure for generations until a well-financed crew brings modern technology to bear. The authors weave an intruiging plot that offers exceptional twists and turns given that the primary villains in this story are inanimate (the water pit) or have been dead for hundred of years (the designer of the pit, the pirates, etc.).

The attack on the water pit offers the analytically focused reader something to chew on while he reads and holds his interest until the spectacular conclusion.

I highly recommend this for thriller fans.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, suspenseful, and intriguing! .......2007-05-02

Riptide, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is set off the coast of Maine on Ragged Island. A pirate by the name of Edward Ockham was said to have hid his treasure on this island in the amazing Water Pit. The treasure is worth over a billion dollars, not including the fabulous St. Michael's Sword. Many have tried to obtain the treasure, but none have succeeded. When the main character, Malin Hatch, is approached by Captain Neidelman for the right to dig on the island for the treasure, he doesn't know what to think. He has scarred memories in the past relating to the island, also involving his father and brother. Hatch agrees, and the dig for the treasure begins. Will greed and evil threaten the mission? Find out in Riptide.

In my opinion, this book was wonderful, and it makes me want to go look for some kind of a sequel. The other books by these two fabulous authors will have to do for now. This book was wonderful, however, it could have done better with painting a good visualization in your mind because it was hard to understand the setup of the Water Pit.

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes fiction mixed in with some historical fiction, and to anyone who likes treasure hunts.

Rebecca Matlock is in the thick of politics, enjoying her work as a speechwriter for the governor of New York, who's facing a reelection campaign. What she's not enjoying are the menacing phone calls from a stranger who refers to himself as "your boyfriend" and warns her that he will kill the governor if she doesn't stop sleeping with him. Although Becca has never had a sexual relationship with her boss, she is increasingly frightened by the phone calls. The police, who were initially sympathetic to her plight, make it clear that they regard her as a hysteric, even after the stalker murders an innocent bystander to convince her that he means business. Becca seeks refuge in Riptide, an isolated community on the Maine coast, but terror continues to dog her. The skeleton of a woman who may be the missing wife of a college friend is unearthed in the basement of her new house; the stalker tracks her to her chosen refuge; and she is sought by the police and the FBI following an assassination attempt on the governor.

With the appearance of Adam Carruthers, a stranger who says he's her guardian angel but doesn't tell her who sent him, the plot makes a dramatic right turn that requires a willing suspension of disbelief. It seems that Becca's father, a high-ranking intelligence officer, went underground when she was a baby in order to protect his family from reprisals by a Soviet agent whose wife he had accidentally killed. Now it's payback time, as Thomas Matlock calls in his own intelligence community to neutralize the threat on his daughter's life. All the attendant testosterone speeds up the action and propels it toward a shoot-'em-up conclusion, but it also sacrifices a clearer portrayal of Becca's feelings about her father's deception and abandonment. At the same time, the switch from a damsel-in-distress story to a high-velocity espionage thriller relegates the skeleton in Becca's basement to a secondary plot point that is resolved a bit too tidily. Catherine Coulter is short on character development and explication, but she weaves a suspenseful web of danger and intrigue, and for her many admirers, the fact that there seem to be two novels trying to coexist in one book may not be too much of a good thing. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Revenge and murder become entwined in this riveting new contemporary suspense novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Edge.

With four back-to-back bestselling suspense thrillers to her credit, Catherine Coulter has earned an ever-growing following thanks to her original plots, vivid characters, unexpected twists, and satisfyingly unpredictable denouements. The Los Angeles Times found The Edge "full of surprises." Now Coulter delivers a novel predicated on a baffling threat, fueled by an animus dating back a generation.

Political speechwriter Jessie Matlock is at the top of her professional game, working for the re-election campaign of New York's popular governor, when she receives the first phone call: "Stop sleeping with the governor or I'll kill him." Though Jessie isn't sleeping with the governor, the menacing ultimatums persist. The police suddenly stop believing her, even after the stalker murders an innocent person to prove his point.

When the governor is shot in the neck, Jessie flees for the safety of coastal Maine, choosing to hide not only from the stalker but also from the authorities. For sanctuary, she goes to Riptide, the home of a college friend--but soon finds herself at even greater risk.

1 out of 5 stars Rotten Ripoff.......2007-06-28

Terrible character development, horrible writing/formatting/editing and repetitive, boring plots. This is my first and LAST Catherine Coulter book. The writing is elementary level and I find it very hard to believe this is a "New York Times Bestseller" author. Must not be hard to be on that list! Throughout the entire story, high level CIA and FBI agents are looking for the villain stalking our main character (Becca Matlock-for some unknown reason to her). Seems Becca could have done the job on her own for all the fumbling stooges they turned out to be! The story is very disjointed and the dialogue is hokey (the term "folk" is used over and over) and I found myself re-reading paragraphs to try to figure out what in fact they were making reference to. This book is very hard to follow and very predictable. The author is confident you won't guess the villain, because the villain is a character introduced at the end of the story. Lousy writing and lousy storyline - don't bother!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-05-03

I loved this book I have read and listened to it several times. The plot was thought out and just when you thought you figured out the ending you would be thrown for a loop.

The story is about 27 year old Rebecca Matlock, who was the senoir speech writer for the govenor of New York. She worked for him until she started recieving mysterioius calls from a man telling her to stop sleeping with the governor and only identified himself as her boyfriend. The only thing was she never did sleep with the govenor. Once her mother died and no help from the police she decides to move to Riptide, Maine a small picturesque town, for a safehaven. Though her hideout is soon discovered, by both friends and foes.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to follow.......2007-01-16

I had trouble following Riptide. It was a so so book.

2 out of 5 stars Just skip it.......2006-09-21

At the book's beginning the plot is fairly good. As you keep reading it starts to get heavy and dull, but the last 100 pages or so are really boring. The second plot is nonsense and you'll really know who is the bad guy almost as it starts. The main plot is thrilling just the few initial pages, then it gets dull and boring. At least you can skip the last 75 pages of the book or better said you can skip the whole book.

2 out of 5 stars Rip it apart!.......2006-04-23

I agree with the many reviewers. I bought three more Coulter books after reading Blow Out, which wasn't bad. Someone had given it to me and since the book was a bit beaten up, I thought maybe it was older. So I bought three more, 2 of which I read. Target was okay. Nice twists in it, but the dialogue was a little off. Riptide, which is after Target, was absolutely horrible in the dialogue area. I couldn't help but think that if this story line had been in Nora Roberts or Sandra Brown's hands it would have been hair on ends. But there are too many "so now" and "Now" in the dialogue. The dispatcher/assistant to the sherrif used horrible tactics in "calming" down the victim and the rest of the characters were just awful once they spoke. Even Savich and Sherlock sounded like morons at times. The dialogue made this book a terrible read, kept it from flowing, made the mystery so "blah" that I now dread reading the third book I bought from this author.

Book Description

The Miami Dade Crime Lab is called in to examine the body of a young woman who has washed ashore on an island in Florida Bay. Lieutenant Horatio Caine is quick to identify the probable murder weapon: a shark dart used by the navy as part of an experimental program to kill enemy divers. However, during the autopsy, Doctor Alexx Woods finds that the true cause of death was drowning; the dart was used postmortem.

When another mangled body of a woman is discovered, Caine begins to suspect the worst. The unusual and violent nature of the crimes bears all the hallmarks of an organized serial killer -- sexual predation, a great deal of preparation and a disturbingly distorted worldview. Now, the lieutenant and his team must race to piece together all the clues to stop the murderer before they can strike again.

4 out of 5 stars A fast-paced story.......2007-05-13

This is the first book of the CSI series that I have read. This story immediately hooked me in the first few paragraphs. While the character development of the CSI team and the suspects is really good, sometimes the details around the actual work of the investigators was very technical. However, the detailed aspects added to the whole story development. I recommend this book because it is a fun and fast mystery with great characters.

3 out of 5 stars lame writing, but good mystery.......2006-08-28

the mystery is about a wierd serial killer with an obsession with water, latex, and a cheesy old horror movie.

sounds wierd, and it is. but serial murderers aren't exactly normal. the mystery works. but writing it down ruins it.

as far as i can tell, all the flaws in the writing are because the book was trying to mimic a tv show. the author tries to make the dialogue into witty banter, but fails miserably, so everything anyone says just sounds very lame.

and the book is full of nauseatingly boring lectures. they find latex under a victim's fingernail, so we get treated to a huge speech about rubber and the proteins latex is made of. then we hear about latex again when a witness is allergic to it. i'm sick of latex. but that wasn't all they talked about. i had to skip way too many boring, useless lectures. now, i'm a big fan of csi. and i like learnning. but the information you get by watching csi isn't in fifteen minute long lectures about random topics like latex. it's about stuff that actually pertains to the case, and takes up about a couple sentences, not two pages.

but if you like reading bad novels and don't care whether the writing's good, then you'll like the mystery. it's not amazing, but it's good enough to keep you turning the pages. it was good enough to keep me reading, even through the terrible writing.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Page Turner I really Couldn't Put It Down!!.......2006-08-20

I really enjoyed the book. Some of the details left me not wanting to eat sometimes because the material was a little to grafic for my taste but then again that is what CSI is all about. However, the graffics not with standing I still enjoyed the book tremendously and honestly was very surprised at the end.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Ripping Read.......2005-10-10

This is a fine absorbing read. The Writer of this review has lived through the Blitz in England (the background to this novel) and it feels authentic. But really it is one of those books you would like to read at a sitting. An American (Cal) in England finds himself working with Walter Stilton (a working class Chief Inspector) who in their joint search for an American spy in Lodon, share many interesting and humorous cultural exchanges. Cal's introduction to English tea is one example. I frequently found myself laughing out loud. There is also a fast paced and humorous sexual thread. Sgt Troy of Scotland Yard, a central figure in earlier novels, makes a lower key appearance. The story is fast, the action believable, the comments on life during the blitz accurate and altogether this is the most enjoyable, moving and tense novel I have read for many a long time.

The Julesburg Mysteries Series - "Whirlpool, Riptide, and Undertow" by Lorena McCourtney were all exciting suspense stories that made it hard to put down the book before the last page.

    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2004-01-16

I enjoyed this book immensely and had to read it straight through. Set in the same town as the previous novel in the serious, McCourtney revisits some of the characters she's already introduced. The mystery keeps you guessing until the end leaving hints here and there for you to pick up. It's about two twins that decide to buy the old Nevermore (the theater in town). This building is surrounded by horrible "coincidences" where any person that becomes involved with it ends up dead, badly burned, or some other horrible tragedy. As you may have guessed it, that's what the two twins encounter as well. Filled with struggles towards Christianity and a well-written love story, Whirlpool is a great novel for mystery lovers, Christians, and romantics alike.

I've been collecting this author's works for some time now and this novel reaches the usual McCourtney standard. I'd even stretch this comment as far as being on a caliber up there with Dee Henderson (who I've read avidly). I recommend this novel as a good, quick read that keeps you on your toes.

3 out of 5 stars Powerful romantic suspense.......2003-07-10

Sisters Sarah McIntosh and Julie Armstrong only recently found one another before being tragically separated again by a catastrophic act of fate. They share a dream of renovating an abandoned theater called The Nevermore, hoping to create a mini-mall where they can display their artistic creations. They invite contractor Nick Nordahl to make a bid for the renovations. Their new found friendship leads to unexpected consequences, however, when a moment in time brings tragedy.

Julie falls asleep in the backseat of the car and Sarah gently covers her, leaving the car running while she runs into a convenience store for milk. Meanwhile, a masked man robs the store, killing the owner, before using Sarah's running car for his get away. He does not see the sleeping woman in the backseat, which profoundly escalates his situation. Subsequently, Sarah struggles with profound issues of grief, guilt and terror. While she believes in God, Sarah lacks the assurance of faith that sustains Nick, creating a terrible wall between them.

Once again author Lorena McCourtney pens a powerful romantic suspense. Profound questions of a spiritual nature lend the novel an emotional and psychological intensity, landing both Sarah and Nick in a riptide of feeling. Unfortunately, the nature of the Christian genre precludes the edgy suspense readers expect when the characters are analyzed from a perspective of good verses evil on a scale of spirituality. Nevertheless, the Nick's determination to save Sarah's life, even if he cannot save her soul, makes him a marvelous hero readers will treasure. With a skillful blend of romantic suspense and realistic spiritual challenges, RIPTIDE comes recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story w/ vivid illustrations.......2002-11-24

I picked up this book because we have a golden retriever, but I loved this book because of the memorable story & masterful illustrations. The pictures in this book are absolutely some of the best I have seen since Wesley Dennis. A must have for any family.

    4 out of 5 stars Riptide.......2000-04-11

I recently read this aloud to a group of 50 second graders who were easily mezmerized by the high quality writing of Ms Weller. She is vivid in her imagery and invocation of color. The story is about an heroic dog. His heroism comes about because he is determined to be who he is and be put off by the restrictions that others would impose on him. Some look down on him because he is a dog. Others want to hold him back out of concern for his welfare. Rip will be who is his. It is a great book with a great message. The kids got it and loved it.

    5 out of 5 stars Drive-In Seduction.......2001-10-27

To anyone suggesting that the Baddalach novels are breezy
and insufficient is to completely miss the point of Norman
    Partridge's work.
The two Jack Baddalach novels of Mr. Partridge represent
a very particular type of story for particular type people, namely
those people who love b-films, classic monster movies, surf music
and women in leather. Partridge uses the icons of the Atomic Age
to give SAGUARO RIPTIDE a resonance and power, and like any
highly-skilled, original writer, his references and in-jokes give
the learned, film-literate reader some of the best Drive-In Fiction
    since Joe Lansdale.
Both Baddalach novels, including the TEN-OUNCE SIESTA,
are fast-moving, unpretentious studies of criminals, killers, and
cult leaders, in a world of violence and death. Partridge funnels
his series character, boxer Baddalch, through a world of surreal
b-movie iconography, as anything can and does happen at any
moment; all the while, Partridge displays his absolute knowledge and
love for movies, monsters, and tough crime novels, compressed
into Partridge's distinct and completely original novels. When you
read Partridge, you read a lifetime of Partridge's most-cherished
icons all-starring their way through his fiction. Two excellent reads,
and a pure festival for anyone who dreams in Technicolor.

3 out of 5 stars Cutsey, but engaging........2001-01-09

Norman Partridge has an anoying tendancy to throw in long cutsey dicriptions, psudo-hip refrences, and brand names of products continuously through the book, but the characters had a lot of heart. And when the book was over, I did want more.

5 out of 5 stars He's one bad motha... SHUT YO' MOUTH!.......2000-07-21

With all the attitude of "Shaft" and the gusto of a Cohen brothers film, Partridge takes a quick, satisfying trip through the Southwest in this novel. His storyline is enticing to any adventurous reader, thrilling to those who love a wild ride. His character work is full and rich, much bolder and stronger than most authors writing popular fiction today. I'm sold on his work and will anxiously pick up his other novels. It's extremely refreshing to pick up a 'fun' summer read and find an author with a distinct voice and heart to share. Partridge is a truly promising novelist who, when he makes it big, may well put John Grisham to shame. He is certainly the more talented writer.

    3 out of 5 stars OK...i guess.......1998-04-02

At first, I liked the characters, but I was disappointed that the plot wasn't as strong or as interesting as Kate Benteen or Jack Baddalach. The plot could have been so much stronger.

4 out of 5 stars Comic noir caper in the Southwest desert........1997-08-12

Are you a fan of the breezy side of Elmore Leonard or Ross Thomas? Check out this original by newcomer Norman Partridge. Jack Baddalach is a decent fellow and professional boxer, who is asked to hang up his gloves and go to work for the local Vegas don. His first job? Track down a missing $2 million of the Mob's money. Jack's search leads him to a showdown at the Saquaro Riptide motel and its unlikely mix of ex-surfers, retired SEALS, crazy women (both straight and gay) and desert rats. Dark, macho and very, very funny
