Book Description
Motor City baseball fans haven't rocked this hard since 1984, when the Detroit Tigers went wire to wire behind the talents of Kirk Gibson, Alan Trammell and a cantankerous, white-haired managed named Sparky. The cast of character has changed, with the likes of Pudge, Magglio and a new cantankerous managed leading the way, but Jim Leyland's Tigers have all but erased 20-plus years of mediocrity with this incredible 2006 season. The once downtridded franchise has taken the league by storm, setting its sights on a division title and perhaps even eyeing Motown's first baseball championship since the decade of big hair. Out of Nowhere chronicles the magical season that's been 2006. From spring traing to Opening Day, the Tigers' amazing climb to the top of the AL Central standings and their late-season pennant push, this lavishly illustrated commemorative book has everything a Detroit baseball fan could want. Written by longtime Detroit sports columnist George Cantor, Out of Nowhere details through words and photographs the best baseball season this city has experienced in more than two decades.

Tigers are still winners.......2006-10-28
Despite the fact that the Cardinals came in and defeated the Tigers in 5 World Series games, DO NOT be disappointed in the Detroit Tigers. Instead, be VERY proud of all the things they accomplished in 2006.
We're talking about a team that somehow managed to move past other excellent American League teams such as the Red Sox, White Sox, Twins, Yankees, Blue Jays, Angels and A's. The Tigers somehow were able to move past all seven of those amazing teams and make it to the World Series. That's VERY hard to do.
The fact that the Tigers defeated the Yankees in 3 games to advance to the American League Championship Series, and to sweep the A's in 4 straight games to advance to the World Series, is solid proof that the Tigers are definitely just as much winners as the Cardinals, in my opinion. I know if you're a Tigers fan you're probably disappointed they didn't win it all, but please, don't be- a magical season for them, indeed.
a nice souvenir.......2006-10-09
this book is a nice summation of the Detroit Tigers amazing 2006 comeback. The book contains info on the key players, and while there are no revelations or information not known to Tigers fans, it's nice to have some background detail. Most of the photos are nice; however, some of the "centerfold" shots (example: pages 32-33 of Joel Zumaya throwing a pitch) would have been better as smaller photos on a single page. The way this book is formatted, you have to almost break the binding to see the whole shot. Another gaffe is on pages 62-63: the man in the photo is not Curtis Granderson; it's Dmitri Young. All in all, not a bad book about a winning team.

Book Description
From the American Revolution to World War Two, the history of the military combat marksman is one of indifference, unpreparedness and cost cutting. Despite the proven effectiveness of the rifleman in battle, the sniper in the 20th century has been regarded as little more than a paid assassin, whose life if captured was forfeit. However, since the Vietnam War the undeniably effective use of such men in combat means that the value of the sniper has gradually become more appreciated by the military, and their prominence on the modern battlefield has increased significantly. In the 21st century they are now regarded as one of the most vital battlefield specialists.
Illustrated throughout with colour and black and white photographs, this is a chronological study of snipers, detailing their evolution, training, weaponry and actions. There are also unique contributions from the men and women whose skill and extraordinary courage have made them the most greatly feared specialist in warfare.
From the Foreword by Harry Furness, decorated Sniper-Sergeant, British Army Wold War II
We will always need to deploy our new age warrior, that highly trained specialist, the military sniper....
Factual books on snipers are few and far between, so I find it refreshing and timely that this new book has been published which will provide the reader with the true facts about these unique soldiers; and readers of this excellent, deeply researched book will now be more knowledgeable about a rarely discussed subject. You have to dig deep to bypass the many half truths in order to reach any conclusion as to why manking continues to wage wars that kill off the cream of our young society, but it might be said that if it is the fate of a soldier to die in battle, then a sniper's swift killing bullet must be preferable to dying from devastating wounds.
Chapter Heads The sniper in perspective. The rifleman emerges 1500-1854. The American Civil War and European wars 1854-1914. The First World War, the watershed 1914-16. The First World War, the fight back 1916-18. Russian sniping 1936-45. The German sniper and the war with Russia 1941-45. The war against Japan 1941-45. The war in Western Europe 1940-45. Limited wars 1945-85. Vietnam, America's nemesis. Into the 21st century.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting book.......2005-04-12
I'm about 3/4 done reading this book and can recommend it to anyone interested in military history. It is not at all a "how to" book, but more a history of how snipers have been used in war since the development of the rifled barrel.
There is a ton of detail about the rifles used and the scopes that were mounted on them. In a few places it gets a little tedious, but the author has obviously done his homework.
Not an exciting book by any stretch, but you do feel like you've learned something at the end.
Knowing more about sniper.......2005-02-01
Being involved in shooting, I have always been fascinated by these persons we call Sniper. Out of Nowhere is a very large book, full of photos of famous and other not so famous snipers and their personal histories. This is a great book if you want to know all about Sniper and Riflemen history.
This is not a "how to", but a great book about what is Sniping and it evolution through time.
I strongly recommend it.
A "Must Have" Book!.......2005-01-04
This book is amazing! I have other books by Pegler and have never been disappointed by his product. The topic of Military Snipers is a touchy one that has been maligned in the mainstream press for many years. Even the term "Sniper" is thought of with negative thoughts be it terrorist or criminal. Pegler discusses this a bit along with a complete history of the Sniper, their craft, and equipment. It makes for extremely interesting reading. Many historical facts are brought to light by the author and after reading this book one can better understand the need for this dark warrior, even more so in the 21st century.

A comprehensive introductory history of the sniper.......2005-01-02
This comprehensive history of the military sniper traces the development of the sniper from 1500, the American Civil War and European wars, WWI and WWII (in both the European and Pacific Wars), limited wars from 1945-85, the Vietnam Conflict, and the present. It is filled with anecdotes of snipers, B & W and color photos, and a brief description of the weapons used. What fascinated me the most were chapter 6 (Russian snipers from 1936 - 1945), chapter 7 (German Snipers in the Eastern front from 1941-45), chapter 8 (the American sniper in the War against Japan in WWII), and chapter 9 (the American sniper in the European front in WWII). In each of these chapters, the author describes the training, the rifles / ammunition used, and the combat performance of the snipers. What fascinated me was the development of the American sniper in WWII, since these American forces had to start completely from scratch in developing the skill of sniping. The author Martin Pegler does a great job of blending technical information with anecdotes and descriptions of the combat performance / training of the snipers. This is an excellent introduction of the history of the military sniper for any military historian or enthusiast.

Struggling to finish.......2006-10-31
This book is so long and drawn out, where the author just rambles on and on about background info that is so dull and obvious. There is gratuitous violence (including the bludgeoning of a dog) and bland, almost obligatory sex scenes. I'm trying to finish (less than 50 pages to go) but it's been rough. I do want to know how it turns out, but I know the end will be an utter disapointment, because that's how the entire book has been. I'm going to kick myself for investing this much time in it. I won't read anymore of her work, and was surprised to see she has more than this one book. Yuck!
Couldn't finish it........2004-03-12
After reading reviews of this book, I began reading with much anticipation. At first, I was not disappointed. This book had an excellent premise, and a very engrossing beginning. But approximately 100 pages into it, and it completely stalled and moved forward at a snail's pace. Essentially, nothing much happened during the next 100 pages. This author is far too wordy. She says in 5 pages what could be said in one. At first I appreciated the amount of detail, especially when describing the WITSEC program that Ricki went through. But after a while, I realized the author simply likes to go on and on about a subject, even when it's wiser to stop. I also found her writing pretty flat. I think it's very telling that the love scenes sparked not the slightest emotion in me. They were completely mechanical, which I think is this author's writing style. Instead of showing me how Max felt, the author told me. That just doesn't work with love scenes. Again, she provided detail where she should have provided evoked passion. I put this book down (and picked it back up again) at least 10 times in two days. I tried so hard to keep reading it, because I did want to know how the book ended, but it just couldn't keep my interest. Not sure if I'll bother with any other of this author's books. Perhaps there's not enough "wow" in her books for me.
Rare pleasure.......2002-10-08
It is unfortunately an uncommon experience to find a compelling and utterly suspensful thriller with a well defined and believable heroine. "Out of Nowhere" is just such a thriller. It has a fascinating heroine and a real sense of danger to her. Her circumstances seem highly believable and, in this age of paranoia and terrorism, her inability to trust actually seems relatable. I don't want to rehash the plot in this review, but I do very much recommend this novel. It's engrossing.
out of nowhere..........2000-09-04
*Out of Nowhere* is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I just re-read it a few days ago and it still kept me awake, wanting to finish just one more page. Amanda Maxwell/Erica Baird is the ultimate heroine, and Jake Fowler the perfect match for her. Doris Mortman obviously did her research before attempting to create this story what with the details of the witness protection program, money laundering, mobster, etc. She weaves an intricate tale that pulls you in, and has you on the edge of your seat while Max fights to get her life back. It has the perfect combination of suspense, romance and intrigue that keeps you reading til the last page when the villain is finally revealed as someone you least suspect.
great book!.......1999-12-07
This was my first time reading Doris Mortman's book and I must say it was great from page 1! I never guessed the ending, wich is unusual for me. I am now looking for her other books! A very believable story!

Out of Nowhere.......2006-12-12
I read Out of Nowhere for this book review. The author of this book is Oudia Sebestyen. Sebestyen is the author of six other books that have been awarded. It is a sad book but it is also funny. Sebestyen is a good writer.
The main character in Out of Nowhere is Harley. His parents abandoned him in the desert. Eventually he found May, an old women who took herself on a picnic. May took him in. Harley found a dog, named it Ish, and Ish jumped out of a truck. Eventually Harley manages to pay for an amputation and Ish is fine.
So the first half of the book is about family, But the second half is about family , Ish, money and other problems. I liked the book, but it was kind of slow. Again Oudia Sebestyen is a great writer. She has wonderful ideas. I would recommend this book for 11-12 year old boys and girls.
Really Disappointing........2004-03-16
When i picked up this book, i expected a heart-warming story about a boy that learns the value of life and realizes that he had a family all along. Well, That's not the case. In the beginning, A boy named Harley Nunn gets abandoned in the middle of the Arizona desert and witnesses a dog being left behind too. You'd think that the rest of the story would be about Harley finding a home and having a great life. But this idea is abandoned about 2 chapters into the book. He encounters an old woman that offers to take him back to where he came from. But, she takes him and the dog to her old house where a strange man is living. She kicks the man out and makes Harley clean her house for the rest of the book.
A place to belong.......2002-09-21
The story of a lost kid wanting a family is hardly a new one, but Ouida Sebestyen infuses it with new life and new insights in "Out of Nowhere." Her solemn, stark book is a good read for both the lonely, and those who realistically want a better life for themselves.
Harley Nunn leaves, fed up with his ever-shifting life with his promiscuous trailer-trash mom and her constant flow of boyfriends, in the middle of nowhere in Arizona. He soon acquires a travelling companion, a pit bull called Ish, who was abandoned as Harley feels he has been; soon after, the two are given a ride by an elderly woman named May, who is trying to forge a new life for herself after her husband left her. Though she doesn't want the responsibility of a boy and a dog, she allows Harley to come with her to her run-down little house.
There they find a relentlessly Pollyannaish girl, Singer, who tells them that a junk-collecting drifter called Bill has been living -- and collecting junk -- in the house. Bill and May clash when he returns from the hospital (after setting his bedpan on fire to create a diversion while he escaped), with her ordering him to leave and him refusing. Singer offers philosophical advice, while Harley struggles with his lack of roots and his longing for even the vestiges of a home. But it seems that the collection of lost souls will never be able to exist in peace. Only a tragedy can give them the true soul of a family.
Every sitcom has brought up the concept that family is defined more by love than by blood. Sebestyen adds extra dimensions to this by producing a group of misfits -- not all of them get along, and more often than not they don't. But neither do they despise one another. The paths of Bill and May make it difficult to accept Harley, and Harley's past makes him increasingly desperate for love.
Harley is an unusually deep teenage character with a quietly likeable personality. Anyone who has felt alone or unloved -- or who HAS been alone or unloved -- will sympathize with his longing for someone to care about what happens to him. His outbursts as he realizes that nobody is going to keep him on are well-written, as are his feelings of guilt after Ish is injured. Singer is a little harder to care about, as Sebestyen seems to have tried a little too hard to make her relentlessly optimistic -- a few chinks in her armor would have made her seem more human and interesting. May is too similar to Harley for her own comfort, wounded by the loss of her lying husband and closed off emotionally, even to someone who needs her. Bill is the kindly curmudgeon, a cranky old guy who unconsciously becomes the paternal figure that Harley lacks. His almost comic stubbornness will win over most of the readers.
People who need continuous hijinks and action won't like this book -- the pace is gradual and attention is paid to the characters. Aside from a minor accident, it's all introspection drama, with a splash of comedy from time to time. Sebestyen's style is informative but kind of stark, with all the detail inside the characters' heads. She also does not lapse into the preachy "all you need is love to be a family" cliche, instead allowing the readers to draw their own conclusions from what happens to whom. As a result, the book's finale feels less like an end than like the climax of a very long beginning.
For a beautiful, carefully written story filled with likeably odd characters, readers can't do better than "Out of Nowhere." An excellent work of fiction for any age.
Interesting And Unique.......2001-06-26
OUT OF NOWHERE is quite different from most books that I've read over the past. It's not very well-known, but I went to my town's library one time and I saw this book on one of the racks and it caught my eye so I picked it up and decided to try it. Well, I did and it turned out to be very good. I never even realized I'd be interested in this kind of book, but as soon as I started to read it, I just couldn't put it down. I wanted to see what would happen at the end.
This book is full of emotions but with hardly any action. There are some humorous parts, but this is more like a serious book rather than comedy. Anyways, this book is about a 13-year-old boy named Harley who just got abandoned in an Arizona desert by his outgoing mother and her boyfriend. Soon, Harley comes across an abandoned dog, Ish, who he befriends. He also meets May, a woman in her late 40s, Singer, 16-year-old girl, and Bill, May's tenent. The five have their own problems they need to learn how to face.
This book was solidly written. If you're looking for a good book to read this summer, then go pick this one up. I highly recommend it for any teen.
A story of many emotions.......2000-10-30
The book Out of Nowhere, written by Ouida Stubestyen, is a very emotional book that consists of several outcasts trying to form a family. I think this book is very well written and the emotions are very realistic which makes them easy to relate to. My personal preference for a book is in an action or adventure novel though. This book does not match that criteria and as such it did not appeal to me. Even so, the characters May and Harley were very admireable people and their emotions made the novel interesting to read.

Great book.......2006-09-03
I loved Max and Annie! This book was fun and sexy with enough mystery and action that it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole book. Max is smart and tough but when a woman literally drops out of the sky right in front of him his world changes for ever. Annie (thats what Max calls her) has no memory of her past but knows she has a mission. Together She and Max fulfill her mission and recover her lost past. My only complaint is that I would have loved to know her real name.
fun fun read.......2004-10-29
How many years has Ruth Glick been writing as Rebecca York doing the 43 Light St. series for Harlequin Intrigue? They have been the backbone of the series and she just keeps them coming. This one is a nifty little, fun tale. Max Dakota has a murder investigation going and it's at a crucial point. Max is a bit weary, a spy-turned-detective, he's seen it all, heard every story. Until she came crashing into his life. The beautiful blond plunged into his world - literally - off a Florida bridge. He can blow his investigation, and hope for the best - the blonde knows how to do the dog paddle - or he can play knight in shining - well tarnished - armour and go fetch the dame. Naturally, Max rescues the woman. What else is a wise-cracking gumshoe supposed to do? There is a code about these things!
He dubs her "Annie" because when she comes around, she cannot recall who she is.
One thing Max quickly decides, despite his knight routine, she is no damsel fainting in distress. She picks locks, shoots guns and her hands are likely registered as a lethal weapon - though Max quickly decides "lethal" in more ways than one! Despite not trusting her any farther than he can throw her, he decides, name or no name, she gets under his skin and he wants the aggravating, sexy lass with a passion!
It's a fun read, showing York still has the magic.
Out oNowhere.......2004-06-11
Oh Yeah !
I anything remotely connected to 43 Light Street.
OUT OF NOWHERE is different--good different. I like Max-so macho, so patient. Annie is so heroic, so confused, so her own woman.
So-what is Annie's real name ? Which is irrelevant. Annie Oakland is her 'real' name.
Jill
Another World.......2004-06-01
I disagree with the other reviewers. I Love Harlequin
Intrigue books....however this one did nothing for me.
Title seems right on the nose. To bad this could have
been a good mystery !
I believe that is why there are so many differences
in our world today.
OUT OF NOWHERE grabs you and never lets go!.......2004-05-19
I couldn't put this book down. In Out Of Nowhere, Rebecca York interweaves romance and suspense with a mastery that is seamless. If you're looking for a story that will keep you turning the pages, a hero and heroine you want to succeed, and a romance that beats the odds, this one is sure to please. From the moment Annie, the heroine, falls from the sky, until the climactic finale, Out Of Nowhere will keep you hooked!

A Big Surprise!.......2002-01-31
I actually didn't read this book, I listened to it via Books on Tape. I wanted to purchase the book for my friends because I enjoyed it so much. When I pulled the book up on Amazon and saw that it is a Harlequin book, I was very surprised! I have never wanted to read a Harlequin Romance Novel because I find the books boring and very predictable. As far as I'm concerned, this book doesn't belong in a catagory of books that are mass written, boring, gushy, and predictable. I couldn't wait to get back into my car to listen to more! I was totally capitavated by the mystery of the book. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a love/mystery book. As hard as I tried, I could not figure out "who dun it" until I was told by the author. Great! Buy it - you'll love it!

Book Description
On Monday night, August 28, 1826, an avalanche in isolated Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, in the heart of the White Mountains, killed innkeeper Samuel Willey, his wife and five young children, and two hired men. The landslide carved a channel fifty feet deep and buried the family in a stream of earth, stones, and uprooted trees after they had fled their house, which, incredibly, was spared.
In Out of Nowhere, Eric Purchase examines the surprising connection of this disaster to the rise of tourism in America, investigating developments that ranged from land speculation to new interpretations of the meaning of nature and landscape. The Willey tragedy, widely recorded in literature, art, travel writing, newspapers, and scientific journals, was the first natural disaster in the United States to capture national attention. Nineteenth-century Americans were intrigued with nature's sheer perversity in destroying an entire family while leaving its house untouched. They marveled at such dramatic evidence of the natural world's vastness and power.
Suddenly the White Mountains became, in the public's imagination, a mythical place where nature was preserved in its original, potent state. Hundreds and then thousands of tourists, including artists, scientists, and writers such as Thomas Cole, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, and Charles Lyell, began traveling there every summer to take vacations amid the romantic landscape. The Willey's undamaged house became one of the area's most popular attractions -- fittingly, Purchase notes, since Samuel Willey was among the first entrepreneurs of White Mountain tourism. It was businessmen, after all, not artists or intellectuals, who were the first to exploit picturesque notions of untamed nature in remote landscapes to lure wealthy tourists to their inns. Ultimately, the fame of the Willeys' gruesome deaths only enhanced the tourist trade they had helped launch.
Customer Reviews:
interesting history of NH's White Mountain region.......2003-10-26
Author Eric Purchase makes the case that New Hampshire's tourism industry took off after an 1826 tragedy in which the entire Willey family, who ran an inn in the Crawford Notch area, was killed trying to outrun an avalanche that left their home untouched. Along the way, we also learn a lot about America of the early 19th century -- tourism, literature, commerce and science -- all are discussed in this interesting literary portrait of a time before nature became romantic.
Lots of b&w photographs and illustrations, notes, references and an index.
