I just finished this book and, like the first book, Million Dollar Baby, I inhaled it! I haven't had this much fun since I read the Nancy Drew Mysteries so many years ago. Meade has a gift you don't see much of. She engages you in every aspect of the romance, mystery, and the lives of everyone in Ridgebury, CT. I found myself speaking out loud throughout the entire book. As far as I'm concerned, Meade can't produce these books fast enough for me. I'm sold, hook, line and sinker with the life of Marjorie McClelland!! I would love it if Marjorie McClelland spent a summer on Long Island and just happened upon a body here!!! I can't wait to see the characters continue to develop, and I find myself anxiously awaiting Meade's next "case". Great Book!!

After reading "Million Dollar Baby" by Amy Patricia Meade, I thought it just can't get any better than this. Now after reading her second novel, "Ghost of Chance", it has!!!!! I just hope that there will be a third book in the very near future. Bravo to you, Ms Meade!!!!

A pleasant surprise with Ghost of a Chance.......2007-04-09

As a reader who thoroughly enjoyed Meade's first offerring, Million Dollar Baby, I was eagerly anticipating this latest novel. As many others I wanted not only another great historical mystery, but further expansion the relationships of the three main characters.
Well, I got it...in spades!
The development of Marjorie, Creighton, and Jameson takes these lighthearted combatants in love to human levels that make what was in MDB a flirty, romantic comedy, is now an intense emotional drama. Don't worry the humor and fun is still there but Meade makes her characters real in a modern sense yet retaining all the charm of the classic golden age movie stars.
Meade has set the stage with this novel to take what may have been a fun series with limited plot possiblities and enriched it with a depth of character that bodes well for the future of her series. Combine that with a first-class mystery, plenty of fun, and Marjorie and Creighton's barbed repartee, and you've got a very entertaining second offering from a promising new author. Ms. Meade I am a fan.

charming Depression Era amateur sleuth and police procedural mystery.......2007-03-24

In 1935 Ridgebury, Connecticut is holding its annual carnival sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church and one of the big attractions is the Ferris Wheel. When the seat holding the last person on the ride opens the man flops to the ground. At first they think he died of a heart attack but mystery writer and amateur sleuth Miss Marjorie McCelland finds a dart near the wheel. She and her friend, British aristocrat Creighton Ashcroft bring it to the medical examiner. Tests show the man died of curare poisoning and the dart contained blood that matched that of the victim.

Marjorie's fiancée, police detective Robert Jameson informs her that the victim's name is Alfred Nussbaun and his wife Josie identifies the body. She doesn't seem upset and it isn't too long before they find out he was a bigamist with a wife and two children in Boston. They also learn that Josie is also married to someone else and is running a scam to part Alfred from his money with her husband's approval. Suspects abound with motives aplenty but the identity of the killer will shock everyone even a clever mystery writer.

Amy Patricia Meade has written a very charming amateur sleuth and police procedural mystery. The author has a way of creating characters that make them seem like the neighbor next door and even the killer will elicit reader sympathy. The triangle that develops between Creighton, Marjorie and Robert is very well developed and adds an extra dimension to the plot. Romance readers will definitely like this Depression Era regional mystery partly due to state of forensic science and the relationship between Creighton and Marjorie.

This is the 1st book in the series I have read, and I will read another. However, although there is some mystery to this book, there is a lot of paranormal stuff too. I am not into seances and ghosts, but it is different, if you are looking for different. I will definitely give another book in this series a chance.

Disappointing........2007-02-20

I'm a big fan of paranormal romances, but this one fell flat. The main character, Emerald O'Brien, a single mother who owns a tea room and can see ghosts, SOUNDS interesting, but isn't. Her character is just too much single-Mom dealing with kids with growing pains, and not enough mystery-solving psychic. The other characters aren't well-developed or fully-formed, and I couldn't develop any real interest -- or belief -- in any of them. The Plot didn't hold my interest either. I think the author tried to do too many things in one story and, as a result, didn't do any of them very well.

More Paranormal Than Mystery.......2006-11-05

Not a bad story, but readers should know up front that this is a book primarily about the paranormal, and not a cozy mystery as the name of the book might lead one to believe.

Also, while the author obviously wants to make points about how a divorced mother needs to approach dating, the misgivings that the protagonist has toward her suitor -- while furthering the understanding that the protagonist is a woman who always puts her kids first -- has the (I hope) unintended side effect of making the reader feel like the suitor is creepy. In a book where good and evil are so clearly delineated, it's unfortunate that one of the main characters comes off as ominous and naggingly "there's something not right about this guy."

Awesome series!.......2006-08-09

First in the Emerald O'Brian Chintz n China Mysteries and it grabs you from the beginning. If you like a little fright with your mystery, you will love this series. This book got me hooked and made me crave more Emerald adventures and a nice hot cup of tea!

A Working Single Mom Running a Successful Business, Solving Murders, and Battling Ghoulies.......2006-05-30

As if a main character named Emerald O'Brien isn't intriguing enough. Emerald O'Brien is a working single mom who's getting used to raising her two children without much support from their father (her ex-husband). She owns her own tea shop where she also provides warm meals and tarot readings. She also sees dead people, but she's okay with that. Until one night a woman appears to tell her that she'd been murdered by her husband. The next morning, Emerald reads that a local romance novelist died of natural causes. Emerald enlists the help of her children, her best friends, and a new (and of course single man) friend. They battle live murderers, paranormal ghoulies, and a busy Christmas shopping season in an entertaining and sometimes downright scary read. Think twice before reading this one in bed! A fun read. I'm looking forward to more Chintz & China Mysteries!

easy read, great beach book.......2004-08-08

I enjoy the easy, quick read or JAK. This book didn't disappoint me. I would suggest it to anyone who has enjoyed her books in the past.

You Should Give This One a Try - A 4.5 Star.......2003-06-20

This is definitely one of the writer's better written books. The story was about Anne Silver avenging her reporter brother's attempted murder by a bunch of thieves stealing valuables disguised as de-ghost experts. Since Anne was just an ordinary woman with no special investigative skills or training, she sought out Julian Aries' help in exposing these phonies. Julian was an FBI agent who promised to come back to her after he finished his then assignment. The problem was he never showed up, and as much as Anne hated him, she was left with no choice but to turn to him for advice and help. The story went on about how they set up the plan and trapped these cons in a haunted house and how they fell in each other's arm during the process.

All in all, it is page-turner with an intriguing plot. Both characters were well developed, and the twist at the end was a sure surprise. I also like it when the writer added in a touch of supernatural spirit to spice up the story. If it were not for the silly gibberish quarrel that the heroine picked up at the first few chapters and some occasional typos, this book would warrant a FIVE-star. Anyhow, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a fast-paced, suspenseful gothic with strong sexual tension blended in it.

Not bad at all.......2003-03-19

I enjoyed this novel a lot more than I have some of JAK's other shorter novels. The characters seemed to be adequately developed, there weren't any irrational jumps in emotion or plot, and the story didn't feel rushed or contrived. All in all I'd say it was worth reading, though I doubt I'd buy it.

Four stars for keeping me entertained and for keeping me from wanting to chuck it across the room in frustration.

It must have been the thigh-hugging breeches, billowing white shirt, and sexy eye patch that made Clara Fergussen lose all inhibition on the first night of her week-long stay in the quaint village of Magnolia Cove. No doubt, her dream lover's pirate regalia was simply the handiwork of her lusty imagination and lifelong fascination with swashbuckling rogues.

Her purpose for visiting Frenchman's Island, after all, was to research an article about her infamous ancestor, Captain Sullivan Fouquet: an historical figure who died two hundred years ago alongside his best friend and partner, Tyree St. James, following a duel of sorts.

Coming face-to-face with her phantom pirate the morning after, therefore, is a very unpleasant surprise for Clara. Most women, of course, would be thrilled to meet their fantasy lover in the flesh. Not so Clara. Handsome -- oh, all right -- devastatingly attractive as he is, the man is still delusional. A yardarm short of a sail, if you will.

He claims to be Tyree St. James, pirate and cursed soul. And while his knowledge of the times and Sullivan Fouquet is impressive enough, there isn't a ghost of a chance that he's a two hundred year old pirate waiting for a curse to be lifted and his soul to be freed.

Then again, what does it matter? If she can just ignore his wild theories, and refuse to get involved with his investigation surrounding an arsonist, missing portraits, and two hundred year old journals, Clara is confident she'd enjoy a passionate fling with Tyree -- bygone buccaneer or loopy lothario.

Fun, sexy and suspenseful, GHOST OF A CHANCE is the perfect, guiltless time-out from reality (especially if one shares Clara's partiality for commanding men in thigh-high boots). The plot's ghostly elements require readers take a leap of faith, of course, while giving logic the old heave-ho; Nina Bruhns' piratical hero is the stuff of fantasy, however, and will cannily captivate one's oh-so susceptible imagination. (Just so long as readers remain open-minded, and refrain from delving too deeply into the limitations of Tyree's curse).

Fast-paced and wonderfully whimsical at times, GHOST OF A CHANCE is something of a departure for Ms. Bruhns, but still contains the author's trademark blend of humor, heart-tugging emotion, sizzling sensuality, and sly suspense. Alas, the story's dangling threads -- involving a secondary character -- beg a sequel, which has forced this reviewer to follow suit: More, please?

From the beginning - the telling of the curse on to Clara's reaction of Tyree - to the end you are swept into this story and won't have a Ghost of a Chance of putting this book down. This one is a definite keeper.

A pirate's curse..........2004-09-15

Tyree St. James had been cursed by his best friend, Sullivan Fouquet, after he accidentally killed both Sully and his ladylove Elizabeth. Tyree was doomed to spend the next 200 years wandering the earth, a soul caught between life and death, until he found a woman who was willing to die for him. Since Tyree didn't want another death on his hands, he didn't even try to find such a woman. Now, with only a week left to the curse, Tyree is sure that he will be dying and finally figure out if he's going to heaven or hell. Unfortunately, he finds Clara Ferguessen in his bed, and he finds that he doesn't want to die after all, but for him to live Clara must die...

Clara Ferguessen, a distant descendent of Sullivan Fouquet, was in Magnolia Cove to write an article about the pirate legend for an adventure magazine. She's shocked to see Tyree lounging in her bed, but he convinces her that he's just a figment of her imagination and they spend an incredible night together. The only problem is, the next morning she wakes up and realizes he's a flesh-and-blood man, even though he's talking crazily about being a 200 year old dead pirate. Still, despite believing Tyree has serious mental problems, Clara finds herself falling in love with him, but Tyree insists their affair will have to be shortlived. But as Tyree and Clara work together to find out who is setting fires to historical houses in the area, Clara realizes she doesn't want a short-term affair. She wants Tyree forever, and she'll do nearly anything to have him.

I'll admit it, I'm not usually a big fan of pirate romances. This one, however, was excellent and does much credit to the genre. Tyree was sinfully delicious, and Clara was a pretty good heroine, although she was very resistant towards believing that Tyree might actually be a ghost. Of course, if someone claimed that they were a ghost, I probably wouldn't believe him either! The love scenes were hot, and the tension between Clara and Tyree was amazing. Since the reader really knew that Tyree was a lost soul, the book was heart-wrenching at times as you wonder how this story could ever end happily.

My only complaint is that some of the story just wasn't developed well enough, and the ending didn't wrap up all of the loose ends. The fire-setting mystery was pretty anticlimactic, and I was wondering if it was thrown in the mix just so it could be classified as an Intimate Moments romance (which seems to be very open to paranormal stories, much more so than other lines of Harlequin). Still, this book was a great read, and I definitely see myself reading it again in the future.

Buried treasure and a sexy pirate with an eye patch! Magic!.......2004-09-09

Two hundred years ago - well actually one week short of two hundred years ago - on Frenchman's Island, Captain Sullivan Fouquet and Tyree St. James, pirates, end up in a fight. The woman they both loved, steps between then to keep St. James from killing Fouquet. Instead, she is wounded and dies. Fouquet fights with St. James, even though he tries to convince his friend it was an accident Elizabeth stepped in front of the bullet. Fouquet does not listen but attempts to kill St. James. He tries to avoid his friends murderous intent, but in the end, he is forced to defend himself. As Fouquet lies dying, he curses St. James to walk the earth for two hundred years - or until he finds a love so strong the lady is willing to die in his place, as Elizabeth did for Fouquet.

We jump into the first one week short of that two hundred years, and St. James awakens in a woman's bedroom, well actually it's his cottage and his bedroom - or was - two hundred years ago. But now it belongs to a woman, at least it does for a week. And not just any woman, but Clara Fergussen. It's rather shocking for Clara to find St. James in her bed. He's gorgeous, dashing and claims to be the infamous Tyree St. James, a pirate who lived two hundred years ago. After spending a night in his arms, Clara little cares if he is a 200-year-old pirate or just one sexy man with a slight delusion.

Clara is on Frenchman's Island, doing research on the lost pirates treasure St. James and Fouquet had buried, and ends up staying in St. James' Rose Cottage. Clara has a mild obsession for pirates, and secretly harbored a fantasy of having a dashing pirate swept her off her feet and into a high seas adventure. So, she is more than ripe to fall for the sexy pirate with the eye patch.

Only, St. James is determined to keep Clara at arms length. He only has one more week to go before he is released from the curse. If he let's her into his heart, he knows the curse will claim her, for to love him means she is willing to give her life for his.

It's a delightfully whimsical tale that enchants the reader from beginning to end. Yo ho ho and a bottle of fun!

A Ghost of Former Greatness.......2006-01-06

Burroughs was a great writer; in many ways he was even revolutionary. However, by the time he got around to writing this VERY short novel, there was nothing new in his bag of tricks. Every sentence and situation feels like it's been pulled from the pages of one of his other books. He's said the same things before, and said them far more effectively. I finished this book because it's Burroughs and only 58 pages long, not because it was particularly compelling.

If you pay attention, this book could change your life........1999-07-08

There is nothing more exhilirating than discovering an author who disgusts the established academic community and thrills them at the same time. Not to mention the rest of us. Granted, this is one of Burroughs' minor efforts, but that may only be said due to its length. I found the 50-odd page a book to be read in one hour, or ten years, depending on what you were looking for. With his usual genius, Burroughs lets you get out of his prose EXACTLY what you are willing to put into it. Read this one slow... it pays.

one of my favorites.......1999-05-01

This book is excellent. It explores the nature of mankind and how it will one day wipe itsself out along with all of its fellow species. Definitly a recommended read

Nothing new here........1999-04-17

I read this book and found nothing in it that Burroughs didn't already write in previous novels. The only difference is that this one advocates a charity cause: the lemur. Burroughs really has written better. If you're a hard core Burroughs fan, go ahead and get it, but otherwise, there is plenty of other (much better) Burroughs to choose from.

Ecological anxiety in hallucinatory mode.......1999-04-07

This is the first book by Burroughs I've read, and one I found quite disturbing. If this is one of his minor efforts, I just wonder what effect the most respected thomes in the Burroughs canon would have on me.

"Ghost of Chance" deals with extinction, both of animal species due to human stupidity and of man by exotic plagues. And that's just a simplified description. Burroughs adds commentary on Christianity, language as an evolutionary evil and man's stuborness in trying to capture time.

This was a quick read, taking me under an hour to finish. Yet, it resisted being easily grasped: Starting with the story of Captain Mission, a pirate settled in Madagascar and obsessed with preserving the native lemurs, moving then to the hipocrisy of Jesus Christ as Savior, and ending with plagues scarier (and more surreal) than ebola, the book packs into a small bottle a big punch. So big, in fact, that I wasn't able to describe my reaction to it clearly enough to write this review. (I hope I didn't babble too much here!)

Burroughs shows a wicked sense of humor, specially in the Notes at the end. And with imagery as wild and scary as a bad trip, this is a good introduction to one of the most discussed authors of the last half of our century.

STV #7 Ghost of a Chance - An interesting premise!.......2003-12-06

"Ghost of a Chance" is the first of only two Star Trek novels by Mark Garland and the only one with Charles G. McGraw. While I found the premise of this story to be a very interesting one, the plot setup, execution and pacing to be somewhat troubling, detracting from the experience of the book. The saving grace for this novel is the authors' characterizations which were pretty good.

The cover art for this novel is pretty much the standard fare for when it was published, somewhat bland.

The premise:

While making an attempt to plus up the ships supply of deuterium, Voyager encounters a brown dwarf star, causing a great amount of damage. Chakotay starts having "visions" and believes they're linked to one of the planets in the Drenar system where they encountered the brown dwarf.

They soon discover that many of them are having visions and since the engines are in need of repair that will take several days, they decided to explore Drenar Four and discover a primitive civilization and their plight, severe volcanic stresses. The question of violating the Prime Directive comes immediately into play. An alien ship soon enters the picture, the Televek and they offer aid to both Voyager and the planets inhabitants but Captain Janeway finds their offer questionable and she soon finds herself in a quagmire...

While "Ghost of a Chance" isn't among the top Star Trek Voyager books available I would still recommend it as an interesting read in the series. {ssintrepid}

Good Read.......2003-10-31

For novels of the Star Trek shows, I have a bit of lowered expectations as they never seem to live up to the episodes.

However, for a Star Trek novel, this one is pretty good. Yeah, there are some little minor problems in it, but I don't think I've read a television series novel without any. The storyline kept my interest and I actually wanted to keep reading it to find out how everything worked out in the end (because we all know no main characters will die and everyone will generally be happily ever after).

So if you're looking for another Voyager novel to read, pick this one up.

A decent read, but nothing stellar........2002-03-12

This book had some very enjoyable moments. I really enjoyed the Janeway/Tuvok/Kim interaction. And it was nice to see the spiritual side of Chakotay again.

The aliens were interesting, and I got a kick out of the way Paris and Chakotay were almost unable to resist, but it was a bit overdone.

While I enjoyed some aspects of this book, it failed to really draw me in and capture my imagination.

I don't care if this gets posted or not--I just want to say, what is with that last (or first, I guess it would be) review???????? Someone reviews a Voyager book to tell us to go read a completely different book called "Dorella"?? WHY WAS THIS POSTED?? If you want to praise "Dorella," go right ahead--but not in the space for another book. HELLO, AMAZON?

Do you remember cafe society? Do you remember a time when celebrity was synonymous with personality and not just notoriety? When gossip was DE-licious rather than MA-licious? When you hear the names of Vanderbilt, Kennedy, Whitney, Harriman, etc., do you immediately conjure up visions in your mind of huge estates and bigger-than-life sporting heroes?

Now in his sixties, Peter Duchin's memoirs quite naturally include the great names and personalities of the thirties and forties, as that was when his famous father ruled the keyboards as America's premier dance pianist. His society-born mother died within a week of his birth, and young Peter himself was given only a 'ghost of a chance' at survival.

In a time when godparents had a viable position in life, Peter was therefore wealthier than most; Marie and Averill Harriman took on the raising of the young boy, while his father served meritoriously in the Army, and then toured with his band in order to support himself and his son.

There cannot be anyone of any degree of celebrity who is not mentioned kindly in these pages--with one exception, Pamela Churchill Hayward Harriman. Ms Harriman, later the U.S. Ambassador to France, married often and well, and was never a friend to Duchin or his loved ones.

A fun look at a very interesting life........1998-03-12

Peter Duchin provides the reader with a guided tour of his often confusing but privileged life. There are several marvelous anecdotes about his life as a society bandleader. His one chapter on his view from the stage reveals much about the upper crust of American culture. For those interested in tid bits on celebrities, Mr. Duchin does not disappoint. He has known many famous people - in fact he had an especially close friendship with Jackie Onassis - and he shares his thoughts and experiences in those circles. "Ghost Of A Chance" is a fun book.

What a marvelous read! Peter Duchin, son of the famous bandleader and a very distinguished musician and orchestra leader in his own right, has led an astonishingly interesting life, and has written about it gracefully, ruefully and with a becoming modesty. His mother died a few days after he was born, and of course his father was always on the road, so he was raised from infancy by his late mother's best friend, Marie Harriman, and her husband Averell, and knew many of the most influential Americans and Europeans of their generation. He went to Yale, chased skirts and immersed himself in music in late-50s Paris, and was present at the best parties in New York. Along the way he never lost his perspective; he is witty and engaging and never self-important. The politically aware will especially enjoy his accounts of life in the Harriman household and especially his no-holds-barred account of Averell's relationship with Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward (later Pamela Harriman), who made a name for herself raising money for Democratic candidates and was rewarded by President Clinton with the U.S. Ambassadorship to France. Pamela Harriman, it happens, is also the former stepmother of Duchin's wife Brooke Hayward, and neither Peter nor Brooke make any secret of their scorn for the courtesan who seduced Leland Hayward and Averell Harriman. I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir and recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in 20th century American cultural history.

Casper the Friendly Ghost...No Wait, it's Some Guy.......2006-12-29

Meredith is finally starting to make some headway with the cool croud in school- her boyfriend is a BMOC -when she finds out she's being sent to help out her kook of an aunt with a broken leg for the summer. Faster than she can say "Rebecca," she's at a dark seaside mansion with a mysterious past. And the ghost of a young man keeps showing up. And he's kinda cute.

Janet Quin-Harkin is one of the more prolific writers for "Sweet Dreams," and with due cause. This is one of the best of the series I have read so far, and its very entertaining, through each turn of the plot. Meredith leaves her cozy Chicago suburb for a small seaside town and does a little growing up along the way. Nary a wrong note hit.

Hi, this is my first time that I get really in touch with a book. What happened was that this book was very different to the ones I had read in the past. The way that touched my feelings, was that their was a senior named Mary O'Connor that believed that Mr.Morley was the only teacher who didn't blame her for what happened last summer. Then Mr.Morley knows that Mary cheated on her Social Studies Midterm, and he acts like he doesn't know nothing. That's when Mr.Morley gets Mary to do what he wants. She wants to get out but she's treat by Mr.Morley, he reveals that every thing he said to her was a lie.

Seniors Series- will they all die..well I hope to find out.......2001-03-02

I read this book for a credit in my school, FLC. I found the books to be interesting, though on a lower reading level for me. I found myself actually trying to figure out who would be the next senior to die or if one would die at all. If you like a book that will keep you interested but yet also not wrack your brain, then this R.L. Stine series is for you.

Pretty Good.......2000-10-01

This book was okay, it could have been better. In my opinion Mary is a bundle of nerves, although doing what she did did proved the girl has some guts! Sometimes the story was hard to follow, but I worked it out in the end. I wished that one of the seniors died in this book though, by book 5 only one senior is dead! (Not that I liked her anyway.) This is a good book, even though the main character is a nervous, worrying heap and the plot was a bit difficult to understand at times. 4 out of 5 this time.

very exciting and intriguing.......1999-12-10

Every since I was in fourth or fifth grade, I have loved R.L. Stine's books. I really get into his books. This book in paticular, is very detailed and that helps a lot getting to understand and what is going on. I think that this is one of his better books(if you ask me). 'Last Chance' kept me on my toes while reading. I didn't want to stop reading it! I also really enjoyed how it ended. It wasn't what I had expected it to be at all. I love how it is always twisted at these kinds of books, which makes you keep guessing at what is going to happen next and how the story is going to end. Out of all of the characters, I liked Rob the best. He added a type of suspense since he had a mysterious personality. My favorite part to this book was when Mary is in Mr. Morely's classroom at the very end of the story. It made me start to wonder what either character was going to do/say next. If you like books that are suspenseful, I definitely recommend that you read this well writen mystery book.

This book is one part of a series. It is about two brothers (Joe and Frank Hardy) who solve mysteries. In this book they are on a movie set in the mountains as extras. They also help the animal handlers (Lloyd and Gene) who are responsible for taking care of Omar the mountain lion, who is in the movie.

The movie is about Jumper Hermit, a local criminal, who was thought to be killed in an airplane accident. During the filming, someone tries to stop the movie from being made. The stunts that are planned are sabotaged.(...)

My favorite part of the book was all the mysterious happenings such as the sightings of Big Foot and ghosts. It was my favorite because it makes you keep guessing about what is going on and what is happening. The way it was written makes me think that those kinds of things were real.

I highly recommend this book to people who like to figure out things by themselves. Anyone who likes mysteries would like this book, also. I enjoyed the book because of all the mysteries in it.
