Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Only Book Most Windows Vista Users Need.......2007-06-28

Windows Vista: The Definitive Guide is an excellent book. Every Windows Vista User should purchase this book to learn Windows Vista. The book covers everything most users want to know and should know about Windows Vista.

This book is clear and to the point with comprehensive coverage of Windows Vista. It covers all versions of Vista and the many included programs and utilities as well as new security features. It covers Internet Explorer 7 and how to make your own audio CDs and DVD movies. There is an extensive discussion on installation and advanced issues. At a hefty 921 pages it makes a thoroughly detailed reference.

Plus this book is written for easy reader understanding and for enjoyable reading. Great book if you really wish to learn Windows Vista. For administrators, I'd also recommend Stanek's Windows Vista Administrator's Pocket Consultant.

5 out of 5 stars 920 pages packed with excellence!.......2007-05-29

William Stanek's pocket consultants are excellent - I've been a reader for years. In looking for a large reference for home, I saw this one - the definitive guide and chose it over Vista Inside Out and Vista Missing Manual. Stanek has a better style, and he understands the software better.

He once again is able to take technical topics and infuse clarity and depth while staying clearly focused. I have been running Vista since beta one, and this book is an excellent reference for those of us already familiar with the Windows operating systems.

In my opinion, this is an excellent book for all skill levels. Beginners will appreciate Stanek's ability to clearly and concisely explain even the most complex topics. The fact the book jumps right into the most important topics for home and office users doesn't hurt either.

Advanced users will find this book makes it easy to quickly get up to speed and to learn the new topics fast. Plus he writes in a friendly easy to understand language, so that you don't get lost in computer jargon. At the same time, he has a very organized and clear style. His details are never off topic and that's refreshing. His sense of what's important and what's not makes it possible for you to actually read the whole book and get all of the useful information out of it.

Pro users will find this book to be an excellent reference and regular reference. This isn't a book for administration though. Stanek's Vista ADministrator's Pocket Consultant is the best one for that.

This is THE MUST HAVE VISTA manual for the home and office. Thank you William Stanek for helping me get the most out of Vista!

5 out of 5 stars Truly the definitive guide.......2007-05-25

Should be the #1 choice for all user levels from beginner to pro! Stanek's Windows Vista Administrator's Pocket Consultant is the book I use every day for admin work. When I'm wanting to play with Windows Vista's multimedia features or tweak the interface, this is the book I reach for. I have a copy at home too. At 900+ pages, it is the best all-around guide I've found.

4 out of 5 stars it truly is.......2007-05-14

Excellent book, full depth, informative and truly a bible on the subject.

Book Description

Gabriel Allon, art restorer and spy, has been widely acclaimed as one of the most fascinating characters in the genre and now he is about to face the greatest challenge of his life.

Allon is recovering from a grueling showdown with a Palestinian master terrorist, when a figure from his past arrives in Jerusalem. Monsignor Luigi Donati is the private secretary to His Holiness Pope Paul VII, and a man as ruthless as he is intelligent. Now, however, he has come to seek Allon's help. A young Swiss guard has been found dead in St. Peter's Basilica, and although Donati has allowed the official inquiry to determine that it is suicide, his instinct tells him that it is murder-and that his master is in grave danger. He has trusted Allon in the past, and he is the only man he trusts now.

Allon reluctantly agrees to get involved, but once he begins to investigate he concludes that Donati has every right to be concerned, as, following the trail from the heart of the Vatican to the valleys of Switzerland and beyond, he slowly unravels a conspiracy of lies and deception. An extraordinary enemy walks among them, with but one goal: the most spectacular assassination ever attempted.

Filled with remarkable characters and breathtaking double and triple turns of plot, The Messenger solidifies Silva's reputation as his generation's finest writer of international thrillers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Allon Novel!.......2007-06-12

I have now read all of Silva's works and enjoy them immensely. Silva is an exceptionally gifted writer. He is an intellectual writer with decisive actions and great character development. The "Messenger" was one of his most suspenseful novels, I couldn't put it down for the last 25% of the book.

If I have one complaint it is that Silva's books are pretty complex with much character development and good pace. Then the climax and aftermath are cliff notes activity. I like the highly charged atmosphere he creates but final aftermath could be elaborated on a bit more. A pretty minor complaint, however.

3 out of 5 stars 5-star writer, 3-star book.......2007-05-28

I had to wait quite a long time to write this, because I didn't want my disappointment with this book to over-influence my evaluation. So now I've read The Messenger for the second time, and I realize that it is an OK>good generic thriller. Of course, the best things about the Gabriel Allon series have been the earlier books' non-generic qualities.

OK, OK, what about The Messenger? Well, two bad things and two good things.

Gabriel Allon remains a fascinating character because he keeps evolving, as do the other long-running characters in this outstanding series. But in this novel, we get our first extended look at the action through the eyes of a character other than Gabriel. Enter Sarah Bancroft, an American with a background in art history. Sadly, Sarah constitutes another first for the series: a boring stereotype. The talented-and-beautiful-expert is a standard role for women in thrillers, and Sarah is an underwhelming specimen the type. I've always been glad that the gorgeous vanilla-scented Chiara plays so minor a role in the business side of the novels, avoiding just this egregious more-is-less collection of superlatives. If Silva is trying to give us a strong woman character in a major role, he would do better to let us see more of Dina Sarid. OK, she's not conventionally beautiful, but she's got more depth and credibility than a random American CIA-reject.

It would have been a risk for Silva to give us a sympathetic Muslim character in such a narrative, but to have Sarah spend a key chunk of the book in the company of an entirely mean/superficial/materialistic group of morally bankrupt semi-observant Muslims baddies makes the whole plot more than a bit simplistic. In many of his earlier books, Silva positively embraces moral ambiguity, so it was sad a surprise to see him go all black-hat here. Yes, the crimes are monstrous, but we recognize monsters because they are different from the ordinary people around them. Zizi's friends and family are all variations on the same us/them worldview, monsters in training, if you will. Some critics carp that the books are too pro-Israeli. That's absurd. The characters are Israeli, so of course that's the view we see. But the earlier books in this series rise above the nationalist dichotomies and deal with complex acts of complicated people.

That complexity is missing here.

On the other hand, we get yet more back-story for that delightful petal, Julian Isherwood, as well as more nuanced portraits of Uzi Navot, Eli Lavon and other Mossad agents we have met from time to time. Adrian Carter of the CIA is more involved than his usual elegant but marginal presence. (Although, as other reviewers note, some of his judgments on the American public are surprising from a sympathetic character by an American author; let's hope that Silva isn't training to be one of those pseudo-intellects who defines himself only in opposition to his own nationality.) The legendary Shamron is literally side-lined for most of the book, creating a breathing space for the other characters. While the Israelis are training Sarah in a house outside of London, we get the band-of-brothers family atmosphere than was so appealing in The Prince of Fire. They may not always be a happy family, but they do pull together for what is clearly framed as the common good.

Silva's plotting continues to give us a wonderful balance of the inevitable and the unexpected. Many authors narrow down to simple plots in a long-running series, but there seems to be no danger of that here as we move from Israel to Rome to London, Paris, the Caribbean, Switzerland. The settings offer all the grim glamour any reader could want, with nifty details keeping things real.

The sub-plot of the missing Van Gogh is wonderfully developed, just plausible enough to work, with lots of delicious biographical speculation. As always, the art/art history material is both fascinating and informative. Silva is less patronizing about the Roman Catholics than in earlier novels, but the almost obligatory visit to the back-stage world of the Vatican has a forced feel, as if the author is trying to out-outrage us into the knee-jerk moral judgments this book offers.

I don't know what I would have thought of the book had I not read all the others. Probably I wouldn't have kicked so hard against the simplistic morality. But I do expect more of Silva. Here's hoping that the next book is worthy of sitting on the shelf with The Kill Artist, The English Assassin, A Death in Vienna, and The Prince of Fire.

4 out of 5 stars Latest Gabriel Allon thriller shows the terror of going undercover.......2007-02-28

Daniel Silva's series of thrillers featuring Israeli assassin/world-class Renaissance painting restorer Gabriel Allon continues to amaze. Now into his sixth book, Allon is starting to leave behind more pedestrian thriller-heroes and join the ranks of the elite (such as Lee Child's fantastic anti-hero, Jack Reacher).

Allon, who at the behest of Golda Meir once killed six of the members of Black September who led the attack at the Munich Olympics, is aging. His mentor, Shamron, is sick. The Prime Minister wants to replace Shamron with Allon, which would mean that Allon's field days are over.

This is a logical step for Allon, who is indeed getting on in years. But since it would be the death of the series, Silva creates a meaningful reason for Allon to keep Allon in the field - a terrorist attack in the heart of the Vatican that nearly kills the Pope. Remember, this is a Pope whose life Allon has saved, and Allon is in the Vatican at the time of the attack. As a result, Allon gets personally involved in tracking down the terrorists responsible.

This leads to an in-depth examination of what Silva terms as "Jihad, Inc." One of Saudi Arabia's richest men heads a global empire of high finance and terrorism. With an army of lawyers and well-funded academics (not to mention soldiers), the Saudi billionaire Zizi funds terrorist operations as he and his family sail the seven seas in the finest luxury. Allon decides that he must get an agent inside Jihad, Inc.

To that end, he recruits Sarah, a perfect American candidate. Sarah's training is handled perfectly by Silva, as is the ruse Allon uses to insert her into Zizi's lair - the discovery of Vincent Van Gogh's last painting. Silva keeps the tension building, and building, and building, as Sarah enters Zizi's lair, with Allon always watching from a discreet distance. Sarah's problem is that this short distance gives Zizi enough time to have Sarah eliminated any time he wants, if he discovers the truth. In an novel with a pretty high body count, the reader knows that Zizi's discovery of Sarah is always just a slip of the lip away.

Silva is one of our finest thriller-writers today, and for the most part, "The Messenger" does not disappoint. The ending in the Vatican is a bit anti-climactic, given what has already gone on in the novel. But this four-star rating is probably more due to the heights Silva has reached in the other Gabriel Allon novels. This is a must-read for any fan of Silva or Gabriel Allon, and if you haven't read any of these novels yet, grab a copy of "The Kill Artist" and dive in.

4 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-02-21

I have read all in the series and this is one of the best. I enjoy his characters and the plot is always interesting. If you haven't read any in this series, start with the first one and then continue in order. It is worth it. This is a more intellectual character but there is enough action to keep one happy.
Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding thriller.......2007-02-14

Fantastic. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Silva brings depth to his characters, creating nail-biting suspense that becomes excruciating as the climax draws near.

Gabriel Allon is an outstanding protagonist, and I can't wait to read his further adventures.

Book Description

Thoroughly updated, the second edition of this best-seller presents a comprehensive engineering basis for photovoltaic (PV) system design and presents the 'what, why, and how' associated with electrical, mechanical, economic, and aesthetic aspects of PV system design. Using a modified top-down approach, the authors offer a presentation that provides a quick exposure to all of the building blocks of the PV system. They then provide detailed design examples from practical systems, explaining why certain PV designs are done in certain ways, including economic and environmental issues, and how to implement the design. Mastering the contents of this book gives readers the judgement needed to make intelligent decisions.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ok but I passed.......2007-05-16

This book only gives one a cursory look at designing systems but does not get into any practical depth. Most dissapointing was the complete lack of discussion as to the limitations of inverters in regard to their specific input voltage parameters and the matching of modules to inverters. It's a good overview for one who is serious about learning what PV systems are all about but is not detailed enough for practical design and implementation of a functional PV system.

5 out of 5 stars Unique book.......2005-09-01

As with the first edition, this update by Messenger and Ventre is very well suited for a one-semester upper division course in EE or Engineering Technology, or for self study if one knows basic electric (mainly DC) circuit theory. As the title suggests, it's an applications-oriented book, with semiconductor physics (appropriately) relegated to the last two chapters. There are very few derivatives or integrals in the text, and basic algebra is sufficient for the end-of-chapter exercises. Reading 20 pages per day and answering a dozen or so questions from the exercises will get the self-study student through the text in less than a month. PSE is also one of the few books recommended by the NABCEP for the Solar PV Installer Certification Exam. There are a number of excellent PV physics books available today, but this is the only complete and up-to-date systems engineering text I know of.

This book has a lot of good information on setting up a photovaltaic systems, I was forced to use it in his Photovaltaic course at FAU in FL. The book has lots of examples on different systems. The problems in the book are a bit to difficult and the answer could not be found in his book.

Book Description

London, 1931. The night before an exhibition of his artwork opens at a famed Mayfair gallery, the controversial artist Nick Bassington-Hope falls to his death. The police rule it an accident, but Nicks twin sister, Georgina, a wartime journalist and a infamous figure in her own right, isnt convinced. In Messenger of Truth, Maisie once again uncovers the perilous legacy of the Great War in a society struggling to recollect itself. But to solve the mystery of Nicks death, Maisie will have to keep her head as the forces behind the artists fall come out of the shadows to silence her. Following on the bestselling Pardonable Lies, Jacqueline Winspear delivers another vivid, thrilling, and utterly unique episode in the life of Maisie Dobbs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A dry watershed.......2007-06-24

This is Jacqueline Winspear's fourth novel about Maisie Dobbs, "psychologist and investigator." Fans of the series may be slightly disappointed, but should still enjoy it. First-time readers will wonder what all the fuss is about. For, as I suspected already in the third novel, PARDONABLE LIES, the narrative span is becoming difficult to sustain over four books.

But Winspear's sense of period seldom lets her down, and there are still many interesting things here: her view of the vibrant art scene between the wars or the heady night world of jazz clubs and cocktails, contrasted with the effect of the Depression on the out-of-work poor and the lamentable state of public health. And those parts of the story which have to do with the rags-to-riches rise of the heroine (housemaid, war nurse, Canbridge graduate, private investigator) are mercifully shorter -- though Maisie's emotional problems would mean very little to those who had not read the earlier books. But Winspear seems caught on a difficult watershed: on the one hand, continuing to write about the legacy of the First War, which no longer has the resonance that it had in her first books; on the other, exploring the life of a nation moving inexorably towards the Second. There are aspects of both here, but they do not blend easily. If she is to continue, the author needs to move forward rather than back -- and also develop the inner life of her heroine so as to make her interesting for who she is now, rather than as the product of previous books in the series.

Readers who want to read more about the role of artists in the first War -- an important element in this book -- might be interested in REGENERATION by Pat Barker. Although Barker's novel deals with poets (Sassoon and Owen among them) rather than painters, it tackles head-on the conflict between war's brutality and artistic sensitivity, which has been a persistent theme in Winspear's books, and a moving one.

2 out of 5 stars Unforgivably dull!.......2007-06-23

This is the fourth Maisie Dobbs book I've read, and while I really enjoyed the first three, this book was very boring. I couldn't wait for it to end. In fact, by the end, I didn't even care who murdered Nicholas! The whole story felt poorly conceived, with events and people sort of thrown together randomly - and then the ending popped out of nowhere. I just don't think it was well written.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2007-02-06

I just finished reading this book, and had to contribute my two cents. I loved this book! I think it is the best yet in a series that is head and shoulders above most mystery series. Maisie, already a complex character to begin with, becomes richer and deeper in this recent book. So many facets of the deepening worldwide depression are interwoven with the echoes of World War 1, even as faint echoes of the rise of fascism in Germany are making themselves felt, creating a many-layered mystery. In response to the reviewer who felt that Maisie was not as likeable in this book, I did not find that to be the case at all. I DID notice something of that transformation in the previous book in this series, Pardonable Lies, but then, Maisie was undergoing something of an emotional breakdown at that juncture, making it a somewhat darker book. In this book, Maisie seemed to be back on track, and beginning to open to new ideas and possibilities which perhaps the author will explore in later books. I can't wait for the next one!

4 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Sarra Borne.......2007-01-26

Another well plotted novel in the Maisie Dobbs series, Messenger of Truth begins with the death of controversial artist Nick Bassington. His twin sister and greatest fan, feminist wartime journalist Georgina Bassington-Hope, is convinced he was murdered despite the official verdict of accidental death and after much hesitation she calls on Maisie to investigate.

Georgina Bassington-Hope is a graduate of Maisie's alma mater, Girton College, and the two use this to their advantage by implying that Maisie is an old college friend, allowing Maisie to ask questions without arousing suspicion. Maisie soon discovers that there may be a connection between some missing artwork and the artist's death. She follows this trail which leads her to the beaches of Dungeness and a possible smuggling connection, and then into the seedy underbelly of London's art world.

Closer to home, Maisie must also deal with the tragedy of another family closer to her heart and she is torn between the demands of her personal life versus those of the professional.

While the plots of Jaqueline Winspear's novels focus on solving mysteries, the stories behind the crimes are rooted in the social changes created by the First World War. Some readers might wish that the whodunnit aspect take more of a center stage but fans of fine historical fiction will be most satisfied.

3 out of 5 stars Wanted to Like Her............2007-01-23

but in this book of the series Masie was not herself...or if this is her true self (disassociated and dismissive of others and their feelings) she is turning into someeone I do not like. The mystery was o.k, but not the best in the series.

I was so impressed by this book when I checked it out from the library I realized I had to have a copy of my own for those times when problems crop up that drive me toward the deep end. This book does what it claims. Though it won't answer all of your problems (what book would), it's easy to understand and can provide simple solutions to what seem like complex problems. It also gives the reader various references and free helpful programs on-line. I highly recommend it.

After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.

5 out of 5 stars PC Annoyances.......2006-02-28

This is not the usual boring computer book. Just the opposite.
I'm reading it the second time with a felt tip marker. After reading a chapter I go to my computer, explore, and make changes. I've learned more reading this book than any other computer book I've purchased. And it's written so the average computer user like me can understand.

5 out of 5 stars ....Wow..........2007-06-11

I picked up this book from my local bookstore expecting a thought-provoking, humorous, but potentially empty read. A mystery/thriller without much emotion-after all, what more can you expect from a novel you choose from a section that includes superficial books ranging from "the it girl" and "confessions of a boyfriend stealer...?"

Now, I'll admit the beginning didn't go against these expectations. There was humorous dialogue, much-too-human-to-be-believable characters, and, what else? A bank robbery that ended in the protagonist stopping the criminal.

But as the spine of the plot formed, the first card was delivered, I saw the story in new light. The man who raped his wife, the girl who ran barefoot-Zusak succeeds in taking numerous spiritually uplifting mini-stories and weaving them into his character's difficult path without losing the reader's interest amongst the cloud of uncertainty or his characters developing a not-so-human mind.

I admit I was disappointed at the ending-but it was just the sort of disappointment i brooded over after devouring Darren Shan's Sons of Destiny...an unexplained sadness at the fact that the life I indulged myself in for what was in this case less then two days was arranged to be so, and didn't fall so in fate as I thought it would. The truth is, we as readers take pleasure in believing these things could in fact happen to us, that fate could take us as it did our hero, our heroine.

But I don't blame Zusak for the ending, in fact, i applaud him for it. Throughout the chapters (which reminded me of prose, I feel the need to add) I half-expected this conclusion; Ed coming to a piece of sunlight and waiting in it blissfully for what life would bring him next.

Why are the other readers so upset that we are left without a proper conclusion? After all, now we can conjure up the rest of the story ourselves, i suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-06-11

I read this after The Book Thief, my friend and I swapped books by Zusak. I picked it up, and read it in a day. After reading both books, I have found it is the characters who get to you. I am the Messenger delivers people from every walk of life, and one man who loves them all. Each one found a place into my heart, and I realized I know people just like them. The ending was beautiful, one of those that makes you want to go out and make a difference in the world. Zusak has secured himself in my favorite author list for sure!

3 out of 5 stars Promising.......2007-06-02

This book has a clever-ish idea, some good dialogue, and really solid character development. People who read a lot will enjoy this book, and squirrel away the name of Markus Zusak knowing that all of the signs are there that he could one day pull off an all around 5-star job.

People who read at the pace of a book or two in as many months will probably feel a bit gipped, especially by the attempt at a "gotcha" ending that doesn't quite come off.

The book is not airtight, but it is still a real accomplishment and I look forward to Mr. Zusak's next title.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic Cards.......2007-05-23

I really enjoyed this genre because you think about what is going to happen next and who is he going to happen next. I love that each chapter lead to a new mystery. I would recommend this book to others because it is a great mystery to read and a story about helping others. I would love to read another book by this author because I love how the author writes his mysteries and the story behind the title.

5 out of 5 stars Read it.......2007-05-22

Very very good. It was thought provoking and serious but very funny. There was humor in serious things and beauty in sadness. Different from a lot of teen books out there. Totally recomend it.

Messenger by Lowry - Large Softback

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Exciting Book I Read.......2007-06-04

The book I read was Messenger. The author of this book is Lois Lowry. This book is about a young boy named Matty taking mail to people from forest. This story takes place in the past. Matty called himself a name. I am not going to tell you that name because I will ruin the story for you. The plot of this story is that this boy wandered into a forest and found something he did not know existed. The author did a good job showing how Matty helps people through forest. For example Matty helped seer's daughter go through forest.
I would recommend this to many middle schools. This book is a great book for a class to read. Over the last paragraph I told you some reasons I liked this book. Maybe if you read this book you will feel the same as me.

4 out of 5 stars The Madness of Matty the Messenger.......2007-06-04

I read the book Messenger by Lois Lowry. A young boy named Matty is living with an old man named Seer, in a utopian society, in our future. Everyone in this village is named by their gifts, or their powers. Some can see beyond like a man named leader, or some have other powers. The book is about a man named Mentor who wants to close the village to new comers. Seer's crippled daughter named Kira is living on the other side of a dark and fierce forest. She promised she would come live with them, but with the village closing so fast, she might not make it. Matty set out to go bring Kira home, and with their powers they are fighting the crewel forest to get back. The forest is trying to kill them both as it killed many others. They're going as fast as they can, but it might be too late.
I believe the theme of the story was that things may get hard or tough, your challenges may be unbearable, but in the end your friends, family, and people who care about you really matter, and everything is worth it in the end. I think people who like fiction and adventures should read this book because I wanted to keep turning the page. I really enjoyed the suspense. I believe that Messenger was an excellent book!

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2007-05-31

I read the novel Messenger by Lois Lowry. The main character is a young boy named Matty who has an unexplainable power. He escaped from his homeland community through Forest to Village. He lives with a blind man who is quite old named Seer. Everyone in Village, once they show wisdom, is given their true name. Matty is hoping his will be Messenger because he runs errands through Forest who has not shown him any warnings. Once a year a Trade Mart takes place. Many of the people have traded away their "innerself." Now people who have traded want to close Village to newcomers. Now, Matty must convince Seer's Daughter, Kira who is crippled, to go through Forest. Forest has become hostile. This makes it harder for Kira and Matty to get back to Village before it is closed to newcomers. The story takes place in a utopian society in the future. This community usually takes pride in welcoming newcomers. What has changed?
The theme of this novel is always welcome new ideas, but trust your conscience. Adventure seekers should read this book because it has a page-turning ending. It also has great morals. This is a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Go In Forest.......2007-05-23

"He simply clawed at the earth, feeling the power in his hands enter, pulsating, into the ruined world. He became aware, suddenly, that he had been chosen for this". A most outstanding part of this book is when Matty sacrificed himself to save everything, because there was such vast detail. This book was tops because it has many detailed parts that can get you exploding like fireworks from suspense. I recommend this book because it is very adventurous and you feel like you are in the book sometimes, and it is good for peoples of all ages. When Matty walks into the forest when it is dark and gloomy there is a lot of hidden foreshadowing. This book was very hard to try to put down. It was very enjoyable to read, especially with the excellent style of writing. Anybody can pretty much enjoy reading this book because it has a little bit of everything for everyone. The excitement never stops, and it will make you want to stay up all night reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Messenger.......2007-04-18

The book I read is the Messenger by Lois Lowry, and it does not compare to the world I know. In my book it takes place in a Utopian Community were they welcome newcomers and the unwanted. When I was reading the book I have chosen, I didn't want to stop because every word was like a detail to the next.
The story is about a boy named Matty that is from a village. He carried and collected messages for his village and other villages. Then one day he wasn't working, he went to a place in the woods because he needed privacy for this thing he was discovering about himself: a place to test it in secret, to weigh his own fear for what it meant. The lesson the author was trying to teach me is to look inside and see what your all about. This book is a great book, I think you should read this book and I think you will enjoy it to.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Connections galore.......2007-06-21

I had read "The Giver" some time ago, but had never read the other books in the series. I always wondered what happened to Jonas. This clears things up for me. He came into the community on the sled and became the Seer. I really enjoyed putting the pieces of the puzzle together and realizing who was who in former books and what role they play in "The Messenger." The only thing is that I wondered what happened to Gabriel...could he be the teacher? They only mention one coming in on the sled, but at the end of "The Giver," there are actually two people on it.

5 out of 5 stars Giver.......2007-05-21

It's beautiful book for all family. I had a big pleasure when I red it.

5 out of 5 stars They should make movies!.......2007-01-31

They should make movies of this trilogy. I adored all three of these books, though at times, they left me with a few unanswered questions. "How does Kira change her world without being killed?" for example, in Gathering Blue. Who exactly is Trademaster in Messenger and where does he go in the end? I guess Lois Lowry wanted her readers to use their own creative gifts and answer these questions for themselves. I wonder where one reviewer got the idea that Leader in Messenger arrived in Village "with an older boy who didn't survive the journey." There is no mention of a dead boy in Messenger, and it is clear to me from the descriptions given who Leader is.

Buying these books in a box set and reading them in order gives a reader the chance to see the common theme they share of society gone bad or in the wrong hands (or both) and the desperate need for things like love, compassion and creativity. Buy this set; you won't regret it. And bring on the directors and screen writers!

5 out of 5 stars the best three books.......2007-01-04

I am a type of person who doesn't read. I read The Giver in class and loved it. After about four years that i knew it had sequels, I bought this set and fell in love. You got 2 buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!.......2006-11-06

I needed this set for a college class. I ordered it and recieved it in four days. I was shocked at how quick it got here. It is a lovely set that has good construction. Those of you that have had Lit. classes know how much we thumb through the books. These have been through the ringer and are holding up nicely. No pages have fallen out and the covers still look pretty new. I highly recommend this item.

Book Description

While dogs get more credit, cats have perennially proven themselves to be every bit the equal of their canine brethren as humankind's best friend. Angel Cats, inspired by a contest authors Allen and Linda Anderson ran to find the "Best Angel Cat" story, shows the often extraordinary ways in which these fascinating creatures have responded to human need. Stories feature Paprika, the kitten that may have saved a little Hungarian girl from Russian soldiers; the cat who helped a woman make friends in a hostile workplace; the cats who acted as "pacemakers" for a sleeping woman with undiagnosed heart problems; and many more. Interwoven with the stories are brief meditations as well as fun facts about cats, such as that cats purr at the same frequency that increases bone density and strengthens and heals fractures. An "Ask Cuddles" section answers frequently asked questions about the fabulous feline.

what a heart warming book with great stories in it.

5 out of 5 stars A True Blessing.......2006-11-17

A friend gave me this book a week ago today. My wonderful cat (my companion of nearly 14 years), Trouble, died last week of kidney failure and my friend thought I could use a little comfort. I haven't read the entire book yet, but the last section on how animals say good-bye to us was truly touching to me and helped me to see that I'm not crazy for feeling so blue. Reading sections of this book allowed me to see that Trouble's desire to be held that last night he was with me was his way of saying good-bye and trying to let me know that he knew it was time and that he (and I) would be ok.

4 out of 5 stars Angel Cats: Divine Messengers of Comfort.......2006-09-06

This book has some great stories which are heart warming and meaningful for the soul. These stories are way for people to see that animals can truly love there human. I would give this book out for gift to people who are lonely and think that nobody can love them.

5 out of 5 stars COMFORT FOR THE CAT LOVER'S SOUL.......2006-08-14

In these uncertain and harrowing times, those of us who share life with cats have the advantage of being able to reach out and touch softness, comfort, unconditional love and loyalty whenever we stroke our cats. ANGEL CATS: DIVINE MESSENGERS OF COMFORT by Allen Anderson is a prosaic comforter and provides much-needed balm for the soul by illuminating stories of cats' singular love for their chosen humans, each other, and other living beings. I heartily recommend this book for all cat lovers, most especially those who wish to understand their relationships to their cats on a spiritual level, and for all who look forward to meeting beloved feline family members "at the Rainbow Bridge" and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Cats: Devine Messengers Of Comfort.......2005-09-13

I highly reccommend this book to animal lovers, and especially cat lovers. We are not in this world alone. God has blessed us with cats who can teach us patience, humor, compassion and unconditional love if you will let them. My cats have always been a comfort to me and a reflection of the eternal.

Book Description

With a well-earned reputation as man's — as well as woman's — best friend, dogs have an uncanny ability to sense exactly what their human friends need. Gathered from thousands of stories Allen and Linda Anderson have received, as well as their own experiences, Angel Dogs demonstrates that dogs are not only faithful companions but also spiritual guides. Stories include the four-legged speech therapist who helped a scared boy find his voice; the dog who came "special delivery" through the mail at just the right moment in a family's life; the dog who helped guard Air Force One; dogs from the canine corps; service dogs; and many others. The book also details new scientific findings on how dogs can save lives, sniff out cancerous tumors, and warn epileptics of impending seizures. Each story is followed by a short meditation that helps readers focus on the messages of love that dogs bring to their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-10-31

Talk about a warm, fuzzy, heart touching book, this is it. Authors Allen & Linda Anderson have touched on the very core of the existence of our beloved pet, the dog.
Taking accounts from numerous people they share with us stories of courage, love, loyalty, sacrifice and more that our four legged friends have bestowed on humans. After each story we have a short meditation that enhances the read.

I am a dog lover so for me this just re-enforced their need in our world and helped me appreciate them more. Are they indeed sent from our Maker as messengers of love? I believe that may well be true. If you love dogs, or even if you just want to understand their unique service to man; this book is for you.Written in a tender, honest, interesting and absorbing way; you will find it difficult to put this book down. I recommend "Angel Dogs" highly. Absolutely amazing insight!

4 out of 5 stars The special relationship between dogs and humans.......2005-10-12

Allen and Linda Anderson's "Angel Dogs" is a perfect present for all dog lovers. As the authors point out, the original meaning of angel is messenger. The individual true accounts that follow from a variety of writers show that dogs do indeed, have special messages for us, not the least of which is unconditional love and devotion. The authors' introduction touches briefly on the unique relationship between dogs and humans dating back to the Stone Age. It is followed by individual accounts of dogs who played a special role sometimes heroic, sometimes healing, and sometimes just being there in response to the emotional need of a member of their family.
It makes you wonder what early humans did to inspire such steadfast devotion from another species.
