Download Description

CIA superagent Mitch Rapp is back in action in this high-velocity adventure from the master of the political thriller, Vince Flynn. SEPARATION OF POWER CIA director Thomas Stansfield is dead -- a fact many individuals in and around the nation's capital are pleased to hear. But their happiness proves to be short-lived once they learn that Stansfield's successor is the late director's close friend and protégé, Dr. Irene Kennedy. Her plan of action is to pursue the very goals Stansfield established -- something Stansfield's fiercest enemies don't want to hear. And something they refuse to accept. Meanwhile, Israel has discovered that Saddam Hussein is close to entering the nuclear arms race -- and they've vowed to stop the Iraqi madman before he can get his hands on the ultimate weapon. With the Middle East teetering on the precipice of chaos and devastation, the president of the United States is forced to act. The commander in chief's secret weapon? None other than the CIA's top counterterrorism operative, Mitch Rapp. But the window for action on this crucial mission is incredibly tight. Israel has given the United States only two weeks to take the nukes out. After that, they'll do whatever it takes to destroy the weapons themselves. With the haunting specter of World War III looming, Rapp races against time and impossible odds -- navigating the deadly alleys of Baghdad, tearing through the corruption-riddled streets of Washington, D.C., and taking drastic measures against anyone who gets in his way. With action that sizzles and true-to-life insider detail, Separation Of Power showcases New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn at his shell-shocking best.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner.......2007-05-06

If you liked Tom Clancy's books and the Jack Ryan series, you will love Vince Flynn. If you like "24" and Jack Bauer, Buy them all now. Don't make the mistake I did and buy just one. I had to wait for the others to arrive, after doing another order. Just buy what is available now, and be prepared for an exciting ride. Fighting terrorism the way it should be.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the last three.......2007-02-19

Having discovered Vince Flynn and his addictive writing style, I admit I'm hooked. I can't wait to get to the next book.

5 out of 5 stars The new king in town.......2007-01-22

I borrowed my first Vince Flynn book from the "library" at work. I was hooked. Vince Flynn writes about the same subjects as Clancy. I have liked Clancy from the start but he is often too nitpicky about the minutia of his subject matter, often to the detriment to the story. Whereas Flynn gives just enough detail to lend credibility to his writing.

Nobody doubts Clancy is an insider in the community and Flynn leaves no doubt he is one too.

His stories are fast paced and a VERY good read. I recommend ANY book by him. Clancy writes about the Russian cold war, Flynn writes about the war on terror. His main character, Mitch Rapp, is undeniably a complete Bad***, I loved the Jack Ryan character, but time to retire Jack, Mitch is in town.

3 out of 5 stars Vince Flynn meets Danielle Steele.......2007-01-10

Fortunately I had just finished this novel's predecessor The Third Option a week ago, so I didn't have long to wait to resolve the Option's unsatisfying ending. This book takes up where Option left off. Flynn skillfully seesaws the action between Iraq's nuke crisis and CIA operative Mitch Rapp's hunt for the person who tried to kill him in the previous book.

I realize this book was released shortly after 9/11, and now recent events have rendered irrelevant the book's main premise. Sadly, the wealth of intelligence described by the book and compiled by the NSA and the CIA pertaining to Saddam's nukes turned out horribly wrong in reality. Nevertheless, the book managed to hold my interest with crisp writing and interesting insider tidbits about the relationship between Israel and the USA.

Although some reviewers were dismayed by the rehashing, I read prodigiously and didn't mind having my memory jogged. I did mind the everlasting quibbles between Rapp and his girlfriend, and the emotional breast beating indulged in by both. My favorite character in the series is the unflappable Irene Kennedy, who provides a nice counterpoint to Rapp's hair-trigger temperament. Had the book centered less on Rapp's love life and more on the Iraq crisis, it might have earned 5 stars. Nevertheless, when Rapp and the female assassin wiped out the senator at the end, I wanted to stand up and applaud.

4 out of 5 stars The reincarnation of Robert Ludlum.......2006-11-11

Vince Flynn has been writing thrillers like this one for a little while now, and this book, fourth that he's written, pretty much fits in with the formula. Flynn's main character, Mitch Rapp, is back, and he's on the trail of someone who tried to kill him in the last book. He travels the world searching for the killer, at the same time trying to work up the courage to propose to his girlfriend. Meanwhile, back in Washington, Rapp's alter ego, Irene Kennedy, is locked in a powerplay with shadowy figures whose identity she doesn't know. She's about to replace the just-deceased head of the CIA, if only she can discover who her enemies are and defeat them in short order, before she is raked over the coals in a Senate confirmation hearing that's likely to prove bloody.

Flynn's style of writing is mostly no-nonsense. He does occasionally run a bit overboard, and his ear for dialog is sometimes not as sharp as it might be, but generally he keeps things moving along quite nicely, which is of course essential in a thriller like this one. The ending sequence is quite fun, if a bit predictable, and I generally enjoyed the whole thing. One proviso: you definitely want to read these books in order. There are too many references to the previous books to properly enjoy this one without having done so.

    Book Description

The laws that legislatures adopt provide a crucial opportunity for elected politicians to define public policy. But the ways politicians use laws to shape policy vary considerably across polities. In some cases, legislatures adopt detailed and specific laws in an effort to micromanage policymaking processes. In others, they adopt general and vague laws that leave the executive and bureaucrats substantial discretion to fill in the policy details. What explains these differences across political systems, and how do they matter? The authors address these issues by developing and testing a comparative theory of how laws shape bureaucratic autonomy. Drawing on a range of evidence from advanced parliamentary democracies and the U.S. States, they argue that particular institutional forms--such as the nature of electoral laws, the structure of the legal system, and the professionalism of the legislature--have a systematic and predictable effect on how politicians use laws to shape the policymaking process.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Important Book.......2007-06-22

A great read explaining how the government has repeatedly gone beyond the law. The last section on the "Patriot" Act should be required reading for all Americans. Wake up before it is too late.

5 out of 5 stars Grim reading ...........2007-05-07

The writing stays well inside the boundaries of "well-read layman's vocabaulary" and rarely descends into cant. I could wish for a more scholarly presentation, but the book does a good job with its intended purpose and for its intended audience. If you've ever said,"There ought to be a law ..." this book will give you a lot to think about.

5 out of 5 stars A Well Done Nonfiction Thriller.......2007-03-07

Judge Napolitano has done a great job of researching, and clearly explaining, the major provisions of our Constitution that have been twisted or simply disregarded, and the specific actions by the Supreme Court, Congress, and past presidents that have brought this about. After devoting most of the book to this analysis, he suggests several relatively simple "fixes" to the language of the Constitution that would close the loopholes that initially enabled our great departure from the intent of the Founding Fathers, and boldly advocates a Constitutional Convention to bring these changes about.

All this is great in itself, but the icing on the cake (and what makes this a true scary thriller) is his incisive explanation of the Patriot Act and its true implications. This required considerable legal scholarship: many of the Act's provisions are effected through references and editorial changes to other laws. The only drawback is that this analysis is valid as of the publication date, and the Patriot Act has since been amended-- I'd like to see an updated analysis by the Judge!

All in all, considering the complexity and subtlety of the legal issues involved, this book is straightforward and easy to read. I strongly recommend it to anyone who sees, or would like to see, the US as the world's bastion of freedom.

5 out of 5 stars The Good Judge Calls It Like He Sees It........2007-01-15

An in-depth look at "the system".
....A look that resonates in a refreshing, and seemingly "non-partisan" light.

    5 out of 5 stars Educational & Depressing.......2007-01-10

Judge Napolitano taught me a lot about American and Constitutional history, and I don't like what I learned. Sometimes, I don't know why we bother having a Supreme Court.

I have written several articles about the unconstitutionality of our anti-male laws, and, because of Napolitano's book, I understand better the reasons why they exist: the USA's long, frightening pattern of totally disregarding the Constitution when passing, enforcing, and interpreting laws.

      Book Description

Over the course of the past decade, the behavioral analysis of decisions by the Supreme Court has turned to game theory to gain new insights into this important institution in American politics. Game theory highlights the role of strategic interactions between the Court and other institutions in the decisions the Court makes as well as in the relations among the justices as they make their decisions. Rather than assume that the justices' votes reveal their sincere preferences, students of law and politics have come to examine how the strategic concerns of the justices lead to "sophisticated" behavior as they seek to maximize achievement of their goals when faced with constraints on their ability to do so. In Institutional Games and the U.S. Supreme Court, James Rogers, Roy Flemming, and Jon Bond gather various essays that use game theory to explain the Supreme Court's interactions with Congress, the states, and the lower courts. Offering new ways of understanding the complexity and consequences of these interactions, the volume joins a growing body of work that considers these influential interactions among various branches of the U.S. government.

        Book Description

Nearly two decades after its initial publication, Louis Fisher's durable classic remains at the head of its class--a book that Congressional Quarterly called "as close to being indispensable as anything published in this field." This newly revised and updated edition emphatically reinforces that sterling reputation.

Fisher dissects the crucial constitutional disputes between the executive and legislative branches of government from the Constitutional Convention through the beginning of the Bush administration, venturing beyond traditional discussions of Supreme Court decisions to examine the day-to-day working relationships between the president and Congress.

By analyzing a mixture of judicial pronouncements, executive acts, and legislative debates, Fisher pinpoints the critical areas of legislative-executive tension: appointment powers, investigatory poers, legislative and executive vetoes, the budgetary process, and war powers. He then examines these areas of tension within a concrete political and historical context.

To scholars, this book offers a comprehensive examination of the institutions and issues of public law. For practitioners, general readers, and students of American government, it demonstrates how constitutional issues shape and define current events.

        Book Description

Politicians and pundits alike have complained that the divided governments of the last decades have led to legislative gridlock. Not so, argues Keith Krehbiel, who advances the provocative theory that divided government actually has little effect on legislative productivity. Gridlock is in fact the order of the day, occurring even when the same party controls the legislative and executive branches. Meticulously researched and anchored to real politics, Krehbiel argues that the pivotal vote on a piece of legislation is not the one that gives a bill a simple majority, but the vote that allows its supporters to override a possible presidential veto or to put a halt to a filibuster. This theory of pivots also explains why, when bills are passed, winning coalitions usually are bipartisan and supermajority sized. Offering an incisive account of when gridlock is overcome and showing that political parties are less important in legislative-executive politics than previously thought, Pivotal Politics remakes our understanding of American lawmaking.

I had very low expectations, to be sure. All said and done, however, this is a v. fine book, considering that my brother-in-law wrote it.

But, really now. Even as a total non-scientist I actually did find the book (o-k, the parts I read) interesting and informative. And even though I of necessity skipped right past the math and grids and charts and doodles and stuff, the substance made sense because of "the author's" down-to-earth narrative style. (I suppose it may also have helped that he explained the whole theory, or as much as he thought his brother and I could grasp, over beers one night. Be that as it may.) I, under no threats or inducements, sincerely recommend this book to anyone interested in looking beyond the common assumption that Party X in the White House and Party Y controlling Congress ("divided government" I recall to be the super-duper scientific term) is likely to result in the dreaded Gridlock. Or the gridded Dreadlocks. Music Up: "It Ain't Necessarily So...."

An excellent analysis of how the Justices of the Supreme Court decide whether or not a law (created by Congress or the States) is valid or not. More than just a compilation of majority, concurring and dissenting opinions, this book looks at why the decisions were made, not just what the decisions were. Well worth the money and a fine addition to the library of anyone interested in law or the legislative process.

              Book Description

Although the solution of Partial Differential Equations by numerical methods is the standard practice in industries, analytical methods are still important for the critical assessment of results derived from advanced computer simulations and the improvement of the underlying numerical techniques. Literature devoted to analytical methods, however, often focuses on theoretical and mathematical aspects and is therefore useless to most engineers. Analytical Methods for Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems addresses engineers and engineering students. It describes useful analytical methods by applying them to real-world problems rather than solving the usual over-simplified classroom problems. The book demonstrates the applicability of analytical methods even for complex problems and guides the reader to a more intuitive understanding of approaches and solutions.
