Black Belt Memory Yogger .......2007-03-09
The Black Belt Memory Yogger is a handy pocket guide for people involved with six sigma processes. I like the why use it and what does it do questions. Good quick review of basic statistics and tools.
Handy and Useful, but pricey.......2003-02-21
This book is a concise reference for use by practitioners and those on the shop floor. I use it daily in our one square mile manufacturing complex.
Our people understand the tools with help of the illustrations. The how to use the tools is clear. Sure some may be overwhelmed by the statistical detail; however, the graphs are useful in showing folks what we as a team are working towards.
At only 265 pages, this spiral book is pricey, but that's expected from the millionaires of the Six Sigma Academy. ASQ's entries into this segment pale in comparison. Overall, I use it in any public course offering I teach. Keep it simple!

An excellent handbook for quality managers, directors of quality control, and vice-presidents of quality management.

Memory Jogger II customer review.......2007-03-08
I had to get this for an MBA class I am currently taking. It provides summaries and examples of common business tools in a small package. It's a great reference guide. I didn't do a lot of searching, but for the little searching I did, Amazon had the lowest price.
Tools for excellence.......2006-06-30
This book is set up for anyone to have many tools for them to use at anytime. It has flowcharting, public speaking, many diagrams, and several team based exercises to help become better. In the front of the book it has a tool selector, and it takes some of the guess work out of tool selection. This is just one of many great books this company offers. Our copmany uses several of these in our professional training with our clients. This is a really good book for those looking for continuous improvement. The Memory Jogger Plus is an excellent book also and has many great tools and other goodies.
The guide for all.......2002-09-09
I first used this as a high school student then later at university doing engineering. It's so worn it's due for replacement. Handy size, useful tools, practical. Worth every cent.

Customer Reviews:
Worth the buy!.......2004-04-02
I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.
A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02
This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.
Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30
This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.
A matchless guide.......2003-08-03
While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.
Application Oriented.......2003-07-01
In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!

- Speaking the language of Six Sigma
- Knowing the roles and responsibilities
- Mastering the statistics skills and analytical methods

Six Sigma for Dummies.......2007-06-27
I think it is a great book. The subject is very complicated, but the writer tries to break it down into little pieces.
Good Perspective Broadener, Light on details.......2007-06-27
I purchased this book to get my toes wet after hearing about six sigma design for a long time. It's typical of the 4Dum stuff in format, self deprecating humor, and all that. I liked their intros to 'T' and 'F' statistics, and basic design of experiments, which I'd never had formal training in. After reading it, I had some idea of what they were good for and why you'd want to know that stuff. I was disappointed, if not surprised, that these sections had little depth past giving you a taste. Hey, it's a 4D book that you paid a little over 10 bucks for. What did you expect?
There are some issues with typos and formatting, especially in that some formulas are clearly missing, mis-formatted, or wrong (square root signs crossing over comma separators and such.
That said, I spent a few hours reading the book and felt like I knew a lot more about 6-sigma terms and ideas, enough to start looking for deeper books on the subject. For what it is, I thought it was good quick bang for the buck in learning about the area.
A very enlightening book........2007-02-16
Six Sigma is a very complicated process. This book is written in simple language, thus helping the reader understand it and enjoy it.
Good primer..........2007-01-24
This book is good for people asking "what is this six sigma thingy and could it be useful for work?" Gives the basics without going into any detail about how to implement for a given business. A decent read to start with in the Six Sigma world, however further book reading and real training would be required to get a grasp of Six Sigma overall.
Six Sigma style.......2006-07-11
Thank you for taking care of my order so quickly. You sent my Six Sigma book quickly and in perfect condition. You have kept your customer very happy. This is Six Sigma style. AAAA+.

Book Description
Improve quality and productivity in most any organization
Based on W. Edwards Deming's model, this guide offers an integrated approach to testing and improvement?one that is designed to deliver quick and substantial results. Using simple stories to illustrate core ideas, the authors?all active consultants?introduce a new, flexible model for improving quality and productivity in diverse settings. They draw from research conducted in a variety of areas?manufacturing, government, and schools?to present a practical tool kit of ideas, examples, and applications. What's more, they've included a Resource Guide to Change Concepts so even beginners can utilize the tested techniques of some of the world's most experienced practitioners.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful. One omission distresses me........2007-06-09
Clear, practical, and empowering. The authors are ambivalent on whether or not they will keep the focus on business operations; from the start they're keen to promote to a fully generic application, but the examples veer to and away from the business world, finally settling there a bit awkwardly.
The Change Concepts index near the end is a great idea, but the scope is confused along the lines I've already cited, and you might feel stuck in the QC department by the time you get through it. That's a bit of a shame, because one wonders if the challenges so elegantly met by the improvement model couldn't be cast in a more universal mode. (One also realizes one doesn't have the time to pursue this thought to fruition.) More pertinently, I'm trying to learn business process engineering, and it's easy to see a list dedicated to that discipline would be different. So despite the book's opening claims to a generic application, I felt stranded in one small tributary of the mighty River Improvement.
Nonetheless, I feel enabled by the book to succeed in my company where others have failed. It's so easy now to see how attempted improvements went wrong, through poor planning or inappropriate opening scope or simply through a failure to acknowledge real benefits when they happened. These pitfalls can be avoided, and the book shows how.
Now, I will mention an important omission. In my workplace I have to test and pilot and implement changes that are complex because a single change has no effect -- rather, two or more changes must be made at the same time, because they are mutually contingent. Management is not sure about A, nor about B. I would like to test A and get a decision, and I would like to treat B as a separate decision path. But they depend on each other, so things aren't so simple. (This is a point where Darwin's theory of cumulative biological mutation fails, if you care to know.) A mechanic troubleshooting your car's ignition system could give you concrete examples, but unfortunately, I couldn't find any in this book. My sense of empowerment has suffered correspondingly.
I just read the Philippy review..........2007-05-16
...and feel compelled to write in response. I must say it is hard to believe that Mr. Philippy and I are looking at the same book. I wrote an extensive review of this book already some time ago (it is listed below) and still feel the same way, even stronger. The Improvement Guide has continued to be, for me and my students/clients/mentees the "here's how" of Dr. W. Edwards Deming's philosophy. I am at a loss to find any hint of self-promotion of the authors in the book, save what one could reasonably infer about the competency and knowledge of the authors given the wealth of useful, in depth examples it contains. These could only come from deep knowledge of the theory and extensive successful experience in its practice. This book is as devoid of self-aggrandizement as any I have ever read.
I take considerable comfort from the fact that given the principles exemplified by the book, it is unlikely that the authors will over-react and over-adjust their professional aims in response to a single review, and will instead continue the fine work that has been done in this volume. My only question is, will there be a second edition? I would love to see it. In tenor and tone, I for one hope that it is exactly like this one....
David Wayne

Shallow and Pedantic.......2007-01-22
I should qualify this review by stating that I am not an expert on the subject of improvement. This book will not make you or even guide you to expertise. The only shining concept within the book, PDSA, is a great format for structuring improvement within a company, but could have been summed up successfully in 20 pages or less. BOOKS SHOULD NOT SPEND A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THEIR VOLUME ADVERTISING THEMSELVES!
The Improvement Guide.......2006-03-11
A very clear update of performance improvement process for business. Can be used as an introduction to the concept for newly trained staff and an everyday reference for those working on real projects.
A must read for all Black Belts.......2002-08-13
This is a very practical and powerful guide for improvement.
1. The first revelation this book brings is: improvement is a change. From this viewpoint, the fundamental questions faced by the improver (e.g. Green Belts and Black Belts) are:
(1) What are we trying to accomplish? (Define phase)
(2) How will we know if a change will result in an improvement? (What are the key Y's?)
(3) What changes can we make that will result in improvement?
(What are the key X's and their settings to affect Y's)
Appropriate tools from `6-sigma' tool sets can be used to seek answers to (2) and (3).
2. The Guide emphasizes testing a change in small scale before full implementation so we can learn and improve the proposed change using the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle. This significantly improves our typical `trial-and-error' approach.
3. The Guide classifies improvement into 3 categories:
(1) Eliminate Quality Problems (the aim of many `6-sigma' projects)
(2) Reduce Costs while maintaining or improving quality (the goal of many internally focused improvement efforts)
(3) Expanding Customer Expectations
Specific advises and examples are presented for each of these categories.
4. Best of all is a list of 70 Change Concepts categorized under 9 sessions, e.g. standardization under Manage Variation, Synchronize under Improve Work Flow.
Using these change concepts can significantly reduce the time to develop the specific changes.
This book is very easy to follow and contains a lot of examples. It is a must read for all improvement practitioners including Green Belts and Black Belts.

It is straightforward book. Each chapter has some case study, which is real application of Quality management. I would strongly recommend for students as well as managers to read this book. It has different point of views from various Philosophers like Dr. Deming, Dr. Juran, Crosby and other well-known persons.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book.......2007-06-16
I had been using David Allen's 'Getting Things Done' for about a year before picking up this book. I was struggling with a few facets of my "next action" lists, and this book was the answer. The daily task views prescribed by Linenberger now allow me to plan things far in advance and have the tasks "show up" only when I'm ready to work on them. His simple separation of Master Tasks and Daily Tasks was also helpful to me.
I now use a combination of GTD and Total Workday Control and it is perfect for me. I am more productive now, and lose track of almost nothing (only time is when I forget to write things down!). These two systems can be combined at some level for anyone's personal style for a mastery of productivity. Now it's just up to me to figure out what it is I want to do!
I recommend searching for a list of shortcut keys for Outlook. This greatly enhances the ability to create tasks to track everything. I can create a task with the subject, set the due date (or "do date", as Linenberger calls it), the priority, and the category (GTD uses task categories) all in about 5 seconds.
Total Workday Control.......2007-06-10
The best book I have read that integrates Outlook and the implementation of project management.
Total Warkday Control.......2007-05-14
Works great as a follow up for "Getting Things Done". Easy step by step methods of customizing Outlook tasks.
I'm definitely More Efficient.......2007-05-08
I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to use Outlook to make your workday more efficient. It provides a great foundation for other ides to grow from as well. Finding past e-mails is a breeze so I don't print as many for filing as I had in the past.
Handy Tips.......2007-03-19
Good overview, tips are useful without requiring a bunch of new software applications. You get instructions on configuring Outlook step by step.

Very tiny book.......2007-05-10
Very tiny book. I was not expecting such a small book. Very expensive item for its size.
Book arrived with a grease stain on the cover!
Handy Reference, Perfect for Training Seminar.......2007-01-13
If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thanks.
The Lean Manufacturing Handbook.......2007-01-09
I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.
Lean .......2006-08-28
Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.
Fantastic Little Book.......2006-06-13
This is a fantastic little book on lean manufacturing written by an experienced and knowledgeable industrial engineer. The author's in-depth knowledge on the subject enabled him to distill the critical and important elements of lean manufacturing and convey it in an easy to understand and follow format.
The book has clear definitions and explanations of concepts like JIT, lean manufacturing, waste (over-production, wait time, transportation, processing, inventory, motion and defect waste), value stream mapping, quality at source, cellular manufacturing, production leveling, Kanban and Kaizen, among other useful and interesting concepts.
The book is excellent value for money. It is recommended that one buys it for the whole company if involved in manufacturing operations.
