This is the "First Aid" for Step 2............2007-06-12
First thing first. I scored a 247 on Step 1. As many of you know that have taken the exam. The key is to know what to study for the exam since there is an infinite amount of information. Once you find the "tested" information you have to sit down and MEMORIZE. That is the key to these USMLE exams. For those that have trouble memorizing the necessary information, the best thing to do is to "do questions" so that way you can remember the key concepts. For Step 1 all you really need is First Aid for Step 1, Goljan audio, and Kaplan QBank + Qbook. That's it....
Now for Step 2 it is much different. First Aid is not as high yield as it is for Step 1. Even if you had First Aid for Step 2 in the exam room with unlimited time there will be information that is NOT IN THE BOOK. First Aid lives off of its Step 1 reputation.
For Step 2, I scored a 241. Which isn't spectacular BUT I studied for the exam during my interview season in January. I studied for 3 weeks. I memorized this book and did USMLE World questions. That is all you need. Most of the high yield information that is TESTED is not found in First Aid. Use your time wisely. My advice is to memorize this book, Step 2 Secrets, and do ALL of the questions (and read every answer explanation) in USMLE World. Keep in mind though there will still be questions that you have never seen but these will be fewer and far between if you use the "right" resources. Good Luck.
Highly recommended for Step 2.......2007-03-15
This book is an excellent adjunct to use in studying for Step 2 CK. By challenging you with a gut-reaction recall type format, you will actively learn and reinforce important topics and associations. It's best used for a quick review in the final days of Step 2 studying to refresh your memory of all the high yield associations.
Excellent Last Minute Step 2 Review Book.......2006-10-04
UCSD makes us take step 2 early on in the year and time is defintiely a limiting factor. If you are in the same boat, I would highly recommend this book. Even if you are not under a time crunch, you should still read this book to re-enforce facts you already know. The Q&A format is similar to that of Surgical Recall. I used a question bank and read this book to tie everything together before I took the exam. This book is very high yield, and works well as an adjuvant to a more cohesive detailed review source like usmle world q-bank.
After I took step 2, I passed the book onto a fellow panicked classmate going into derm and after reading the book, lets just say he didn't need an ativan or xanex hook-up before the exam. I read the book in 1.5 days (w/ several breaks) and my confidence defintely went way up afterwards. If you are worried about step 2, buy this book and you will realize that you know more from 3rd year than you think.
On radiology, my resident asked me what books I used for step 2 review. Being the slow person that I am, I didn't put two and two together. John Naheedy is now a radiology resident at UCSD and he is a nice guy. So besides donating to feed the "John Naheedy Foundation," your USMLE step 2 score will be higher than your step 1 score after Deja Review: USMLE STEP 2 Essesntials, guaranteed! Good luck on the exam! =)
Excellent book.......2006-08-25
"Deja Review" was the reason I aced my USMLE Step2. Aside from doing practice questions, this is the only other resource you need to conquer the boards. It is extremely high-yield and concise... perfect for many students like myself who only had 2 weeks to study for the step2. The question-answer format of the text helps the reader actively learn and more importantly remember the material. I wish I knew about DejaReview back when I was studying for Step1. I highly recommend it to all medical students.
VERY HELPFUL.......2006-04-17
I found this book to be extremely helpful along with doing questions. It has high yield facts and it's easy to read. However, unlike other reviewers I wouldn't use it as my only source. This book does not go into a lot of detail, so you have to start with a solid background.

This book is not all encompassing however it does bring back into mind high yield facts that you should know. I would recommend using this book in conjuction with the First Aid
Few typos but otherwise great.......2006-02-14
Just be careful when you go through this book, because there are quite a few typos. Usually it's nothing important, but once in a while it may confuse phase I and phase II, for example :). But again, it is not intended to be an ultimate resourse, so just be attentive not to confuse yourself.
Otherwise, this is a truly terrific book, and I still give it 5 stars because I certainly prefer to have it now, with the typos, rather then wait till all the little things are cleared. It helps me to structurize my studies so much, that I really cannot imagine what I'd be doing without it.

Chicago private investigator V.I. Warshawski returns in an exceptionally well-plotted thriller that focuses attention on V.I.'s longtime friend Lotty Herschel. In a handful of chapters that punctuate the contemporary narrative, the Austrian-born physician tells her own story. More than just a device to draw the many threads of this complex novel together, Lotty's history illuminates the depth and complexity of a character that readers of Sara Paretsky's many books-- like V.I. herself--only thought they knew.
At a conference on the recovery of Holocaust assets, a man named Paul Radbuka surfaces, claiming to be part of the past that Lotty left buried in war-torn Europe half a century ago. The aging Lotty is emotionally shattered. She has never talked to V.I. about those years following her escape from Austria--her youth as an orphaned teenager in England and the brilliant medical career that ultimately brought her to America. But Radbuka's claims have such a dramatic effect on her that V.I. feels compelled to investigate him. Radbuka's early life in a concentration camp has recently come back to him, aided by the ministrations of a recovered-memory therapist. Now he's demanding that Lotty and her friend Max, another émigré, acknowledge his connection to them, something neither is prepared to do. Is Radbuka really who he claims to be? And if he's the impostor Lotty says he is, why is she so terrified of him?
V.I.'s efforts to pin down Radbuka's identity dovetail with another case, that of a client with a beef against an insurance company that's trying to keep the state legislature from passing a Holocaust Asset Recovery Act. It's a little too tidy for coincidence, but since it gives Paretsky a chance to show off her knowledge of Chicago politics, the reader is delighted to accept it. While it's Lotty's voice that brings the dead to life and the past into the present, it's V.I.'s dogged perseverance and abiding affection for her friend that drive this powerful, brilliantly executed novel to a conclusion. This is one of Paretsky's strongest outings in years. --Jane Adams
Book Description
In Total Recall, Sara Paretsky brings together several disparate plots in one gripping story. This powerfully suspenseful novel confronts the machinations of a vast and corrupt industry that trades on the victims of Nazi terrorism; the strange and dubious phenomenon of "recovered memory;" and a personal story that brings V. I. Warshawski into the long-buried past of her dearest friend and mentor, Dr. Lotty Herschel.
Lotty was a child of nine when she came to England in 1939 as a refugee from Austria. Having lost her entire family to the Nazi terror, she grew up and completed her medical training in London - and there fell in love with a fellow refugee. She ended the affair when she discovered she was pregnant and bore the child in secrecy, giving it up for adoption. Now, that long-held secret may be exposed.
At a national conference in Chicago on Jews in Modern America, a man with recovered memories makes a dramatic appearance and claim - and his name brings consternation to Lotty. V.I. is retained to find out whether or not he is a surviving relative of Lotty's. It's a search that meshes stunningly with the pursuit of another case she is on - for what she uncovers, to her great peril, is brutal insurance fraud on an international scale.
Total Recall is Paretsky's most spectacular achievement to date, and takes V.I. to new heights of gusto, guts, passion for justice - and risk.
Download Description
The bestselling V.I. Warshawski novels have dazzled readers and earned the acclaim of critics everywhere. "V.I. Warshawski rules," writes Newsweek, crowning her "the most engaging woman in detective fiction." Of V.I.'s creator, the Chicago Tribune says "Sara Paretsky has no peer."
Now Paretsky brings her incomparable storytelling brilliance to her most powerful Warshawski novel yet. Total Recall follows the Chicago P.I. on a road that winds back more than fifty years -- and into an intricate maze of wartime lies, heartbreaking secrets, and harrowing retribution.
For V.I., the journey begins with a national conference in downtown Chicago, where angry protesters are calling for the recovery of Holocaust assets. Replayed on the evening news is the scene of a slight man who has stood up at the conference to tell an astonishing story of a childhood shattered by the Holocaust -- a story that has devastating consequences for V.I.'s cherished friend and mentor, Lotty Herschel.
Lotty was a girl of nine when she emigrated from Austria to England, one of a group of children wrenched from their parents and saved from the Nazi terror just before the war broke out. Now stunningly -- impossibly -- it appears that someone from that long-lost past may have returned. With the help of a recovered-memory therapist, Paul Radbuka has recently learned his true identity. But is he who he claims to be? Or is he a cunning impostor who has usurped someone else's history ... a history Lotty has tried to forget for over fifty years?
As a frightened V.I. watches her friend unravel, she sets out to help in the only way she can: by investigating Radbuka's past. Already working on a difficult case for a poor family cheated of their life insurance, she tries to balance Lotty's needs with her client's, only to find that both are spiraling into a whirlpool of international crime that stretches from Switzerland and Germany to Chicago's South Side.
As the atrocities of the past reach out to engulf the living, V.I. struggles to decide whose memories of a terrible war she can trust, and moves closer to a chilling realization of the truth -- a truth that almost destroys her oldest friend.
With fierce emotional power, Sara Paretsky has woven a gripping and morally complex novel of crime and punishment, memory and illusion. Destined to become a suspense classic, Total Recall proves once again the daring and compelling genius of Sara Paretsky.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely the best in the series so far.......2007-03-18
Sara Paretsky's tough-as-nails detective Victoria Iphigenia Warshawski (V I to us, and Vic to her friends) has been getting better and better with each entry in this series, and "Total Recall" keeps that ball rolling.
As a previous reviewer has made clear, this is a V I Warshawski novel, but it's really the story of her friend and mentor, Lotty Herschel MD. One of the two main threads of the story deals with Lotty's escape from Nazi Germany before things really went sour, and her life as a young woman in the England of that era. There is something in that past that is somehow related to the sudden appearance in the present day of a man named Paul Radbuka, who claims to have escaped from the Nazis in a manner similar to Lotty, and was supposedly raised by a man who may have been an escaped Nazi war criminal. Now he's searching for his past and for his real family, but it's rather obvious that the man is somewhat nuts, and it doesn't help matters that he's enlisted the help of a Dr Laura clone who makes the real one look normal by comparison.
That part of the story (Rabuka's claims) is never really resolved, but what's important is the memories and emotions they stir up in Lotty, and Vic's attempts to help her friend. Along the way we see just how deep the friendship is between these two women, and that each would do literally anything within the bounds of reason and (most times) the law to help the other.
The other main thread of the story deals with a new client named Isaiah Sommers, who hires Vic to find out how an insurance company paid out a death claim on his aunt years before she actually died. The case and Vic's progression on it progresses slowly and logically, although you won't believe for a minute how the two threads end up twining together - I literally screamed out "plot device!" when I realized what Paretsky was doing.
But that aside, this is still a well-written and excellent entry in a series that has only improved with time. I look forward to my next V I novel.
Torture.......2007-02-11
I have been attempting to read this book for two months. I refused to put it away without finishing it. But, the thought of reading it was torture. It is soooo slow paced and drawn out. I feel like the real story could have been told in half the time. Did I really need to hear about how she juggles her time in the car between time on the cell phone. How about her time at a diner while on the cell phone. I mean really? Why should my time be wasted on this?
Work will make you free.......2006-06-23
Lotty was in England right after the war. She had started her medical training. She went on an eight months leave, supposedly with tuberculosis. Work for her was salvation, a narcotic. The Germans had placed over the gates of Auschwitz the slogan that work will make you free. She boarded with a family in North London and studied hard to, perhaps, redeem her mother's life.
Shifting to the present, Lotty calls upon our heroine, V.I. Warshawski, to babysit for friend Max's five year old grandchild, Calia. (The relationship of the childless V.I. to the child is a good touch here.) V.I. has to tell a journalist that she doesn't think Lotty wants to talk with him. She has a client with an inquiry to Ajax Insurance Company. Ajax may be subject to claims from Holocaust survivors, too.
Next a television interview covers the subject of the recovered memory syndrome and an alleged Holocaust survivor. Lotty feels guilt at not respecting her Yiddish speaking paternal grandparents from Belarus. In England Lotty stayed with a relative, Minna, who made her feel ugly. When Lotty left Vienna to stay with Minna she didn't realize she wouldn't see her family again. She and her brother Hugo were part of the Kindertransport program.
The therapist V.I. and the others saw on television wants to write a book to show that memories are reliable. It seems an insurance payment was made earlier on V.I.'s client's case prior to the death of the insured through error, deception, or misappropriation. The issue of reparations for African-Americans for slavery and payment to Holocaust survivors intersect in the Ajax case.
It seems an English girl, Claire, befriended Lotty. The recovered memory individual, Paul Radbuka, crashes Max's party under a notion that Max and Lotty are members of his family. Max and another individual at the party, Carl, were part of a group with Lotty of Kindertransport persons connected to each other in England and now, many years later, in Chicago. They had developed a very close bond with each other.
In the end this is a convoluted tale of secrets, secrets about Lotty and others. Books by Sara Paretsky simply get better and better.
Mixed at best.......2005-11-22
I agree with those who didn't much like this book. Paretsky tries to bring together three threads -- a murder mystery around an insurance scam; a mystery as to whether a man who has been subjected to "recovered memory" therapy is who he thinks he is, and the story of a victim of the holocaust. The connections are at best coincidental, and the first teo stories are unconvincing and frequently dull. I did, however, really enjoy the third story (which makes up about 20% of the book) and found it very touching.
One other thing. I didn't read the book but listened to the audio tape. The narrator did a superb job, and I think made the hearing richer than reading would have been.
If I am not me, den who da hell am I?.......2005-04-20
If I could give this book no stars, I would. There is no Arnold, no Mars and no three-breasted alien women in this book and is totally undeserving of the name Total Recall. Avoid at all costs.

Total refers to more than memory techniques.......2006-01-08
The best testimonial I can give for this book is that I read it three years ago and attribute ideas and associations I make everyday, directly and indirectly, to the diversity of content. Okay, it's written by a PHD but don't let that dimenish what you can get out of the book without being an academic type. I'm now searching Amazon for other memory books, really to learn about more about memory tricks and techniques, but I'm sure I'll continue to hold this book as the standard by which to judge the other memory books. It's much much more than tricks and techniques as it attempts to provide, as much as possible, the real meaning of human memory.
So-So, Not the greatest but not the worst memory book.......2004-01-03
This book delves into different aspects of memory and has some good suggestions like how to study. It also covers why we forget and classifies the types of memory. It also (too) briefly covers the mnemonic memory systems.
However, if you want a good how-to on mnemonic memory systems I'd rather recommend Harry Lorayne's 'The Memory Book'
If you want a book examining why, I would recommend Kenneth Higbee's 'Your Memory'
Don't get me wrong, this book offers good advice and suggestions but it seems to be more of a jack-of-all-trades pulling in several different directions at once but not really being great at any one thing.

Customer Reviews:
Don't ignore the book just because of the movie..........2004-07-28
The book by Anthony Pier is different from the movie, the first half is relatively the same, but the second half seems almost like a different thing. The ending, although the outcome is the same, is executed differently. The ending is actually explained with some intelligence too, and entire sub-plots are in the book.
The short story by Philip K. Dick, "We'll remember it for you wholesale" was the inspiration for this book.
A good entertaining read, although it's hard to read the book without imagining Arnold Schwarzeneggar's blazing Austrian accent speaking the dialogue.
3 1/2 mars...er....stars.
Or you could just read the original..........2001-08-15
...short story by Phillip K. Dick, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", which is vastly superior to the dreadful film, and possibly even more superior to this hack novelization -- which at least, thank God, doesn't have any half-naked centaur chicks in it...
A Valuable read whether you liked the movie or not........1999-01-23
This is an excellent book for those who saw the movie and thought "This idea had potential." The Piers Anthony version of this story is superior to both the movie and the screen play. This book gives insight into the mind of a alien race and what it might expect from a species that considers itself mature enough for space travel. Mr. Anthony puts a relatively new face on the oft used concept of colonialism extended to interplanetary colonization. We see that the downtrodden are not always forgotten. We are also given the opportunity to wrestle with the question, of what makes a person themselves; is it ones actions(past, present, or future) or is it ones thoughts and ideas (remembered and forgotten). While the "Total Recall" story is taken from a short story entitled, "We can remember it for you wholesale." Piers Anthony offers a fresh look at the timeless concepts.

CHAMELEON by Doranna Durgin
Samantha Fredericks has a very rare talent. Unlike most people, who sometimes imagine that they are someone else-anyone else-Sam has the ability to actually make others believe that she is whatever persona she wishes to put on. Sam wants to be a gothic punk-rocker on a skateboard? Sam pictures it in her mind, and everyone who glances her will see that girl on a skateboard with the multiple piercings, black eyeliner, and constant sneer.
Or maybe Sam needs to get somewhere without anyone knowing there's another presence in the room. With her abilities to go unnoticed or even unseen, Sam can infiltrate any type of situation. The only time where her façade fails is in photographs-pictures don't lie, even for a woman who is every bit the master of disguise.
When Jethro Sheridan shows up not once but numerous times around a secret shelter for battered women, Sam uses her special abilities to warn him off. Not one to take the hint easily, Jeth becomes a thorn in Sam's side. As the stakes are raised to do a dirty mob boss intent on bringing his abused wife back home, Sam and Jeth find themselves in danger-from outside forces, and from the attraction that's brewing between them.
Romantic suspense with a paranormal twist, CHAMELEON is an engaging story with remarkable and memorable characters. Maybe if we all send Ms. Durgin an email, she'll write a follow-up story starring Sam I Am and her "Holy Batman" beau. One can always hope.
UPGRADE by Meredith Fletcher
In the year 2052, many things have changed in the way of technology and bioengineering, especially when it comes to advances made to the human body. For FBI Special Agent Christie Chace, advancement has brought change in the form of her special enhancements-vision, hearing, strength, adrenaline, speed. You name it, and Christie's probably had it enhanced-upgraded.
The enhancements help her do her job, but when a blackmailed scientist is murdered right before her eyes, Christie gets caught up in a dangerous game of hide and seek-and search and destroy-with a terrorist group known as Bronze Tigers. Thanks to the help of former Master Sergeant Dalton Geller, Christie escapes the set-up that claims the lives of several of her fellow agents. But now she's determined to bring down the Bronze Tigers, and she needs the ex-Ranger's help to do it.
But Dalton has his own problems, the least of which is his growing attraction to Grace. Ever since the death of his best friend, Mac Reynolds, was killed in battle, Dalton has made it his mission to protect Mac's widow, Dr. Grace Reynolds, and his son, Michael. Now that the Chinese Triad is after Grace and her research, and threatening her son to get it, Dalton has no choice but to work with Christie to protect everyone he loves.
Fast-paced action adventure with a strong romantic subplot, UPGRADE is the best of suspense, sci-fi, and medical thriller all in one. You won't go wrong with this strong, factually based story.
TOTAL RECALL by Vicki Hinze
Captain Darcy Clark, who works for the top-secret government agency known as S.A.S.S., has the unique abilities that require her to work alone. After a devastating fire in which she suffered a traumatic head injury, Darcy has the rare talent of total recall-everything she reads, hears, smells, tastes, or senses is immediately-and forever-imbedded into her brain.
When her commanding officer, Colonel Sally Drake, is ordered to put Darcy undercover as a customs agent alongside Agent Benjamin Kelly, things really start to get interesting. For Darcy, a self-imposed hermit since her accident, learns that she must not only work side by side with Ben, but at a very busy border crossing where she's bound to be inundated with an overload of sensory input, panic sets in. But Darcy is above all else a professional, and she sets out to do her job.
This job is beyond important, and failure is not an option. GRID-Group Resources for Individual Development-is a terrorist cell headed by Thomas Kunz. Kunz doesn't just hate Americans, he's made it his mission in life to destroy as many of them as he can. And when S.A.S.S. and its superiors learn of a plot to unleash radioactive bombs disguised as fireworks at the White House Fourth of July celebration, its up to Darcy and Ben to save the day.
For Ben, his attraction and admiration of Darcy is strong and immediate, but he knows as well as Darcy that the job must come first. Finding the traitor within their midst, stopping the delivery of the "dirty" bombs across the US border, was imperative. For the two of them, failure didn't just mean disappoint-it could well have lasting recriminations upon millions of United States citizens.
Tightly paced action and adventure along with two strong characters determined to overcome their own personal grievances make TOTAL RECALL a short story that you won't soon forget.
SMOKESCREEN is a book of three short stories in the Silhouette Bombshell tradition. You won't be disappointed with any of the three stories, and might, in fact, have only one complaint-that they had to end at all.
Always worth the read..........2006-11-04
Ok, this may not have been as great as some of what I've read of hers, but it was nonetheless enjoyable and worth every minute!
